Improved kernel principal component analysis for fault detection
Kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) has become a popular technique for process monitoring in recent years. However, the performance largely depends on kernel function, yet methods to choose an appropriate kernel function among infinite ones have only been sporadically touched in the research literatures. In this paper, a novel methodology to learn a data-dependent kernel function automatically from specific input data is proposed and the improved kernel principal component analysis is obtained through using the data-dependent kernel function in traditional KPCA. The learning procedure includes two parts: learning a kernel matrix and approximating a kernel function. The kernel matrix is learned via a manifold learning method named maximum variance unfolding (MVU) which considers underlying manifold structure to ensure that principal components are linear in kernel space. Then, a kernel function is approximated via generalized Nystrom formula. The effectiveness of the improved KPCA model is confirmed by a numerical simulation and the Tennessee Eastman (TE) process benchmark.

Composite fault detection and diagnosis for IGBT and current sensor in CRH2 through modified EEMD and KPCA methods
This study proposes a diagnosis method for IGBT open circuit fault and sensor drift fault in CRH2 through ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) and an improved kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) way. EEMD is modified to reduce noise in the current and voltage signals. Subsequently, an improved KPCA method using weight matrix to highlighting fault information is developed to detect and diagnose the composite fault. Then the three-phase current averaging method is applied to perform fault location. Numerical simulation results verify the validity and availability of the composite fault detection method.

An IKPCA-ELM-based intrusion detection method is developed to address the problem of the low accuracy and slow speed of intrusion detection caused by redundancies and high dimensions of data in the network. First, in order to reduce the effects of uneven sample distribution and sample attribute differences on the extraction of KPCA features, the sample attribute mean and mean square error are introduced into the Gaussian radial basis function and polynomial kernel function respectively, and the two improved kernel functions are combined to construct a hybrid kernel function. Second, an improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) algorithm is proposed to determine the optimal hybrid kernel function for improved kernel principal component analysis (IKPCA). Finally, IKPCA is conducted to complete feature extraction, and an extreme learning machine (ELM) is applied to classify common attack type detection. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the constructed hybrid kernel function. Compared with other intrusion detection methods, IKPCA-ELM not only ensures high accuracy rates, but also reduces the detection time and false alarm rate, especially reducing the false alarm rate of small sample attacks.
Read moreFault detection in a multivariate process based on kernel PCA and kernel density estimation
Kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) is a method for performing a nonlinear form of principal component analysis (PCA). It involves nonlinear mapping of the input data onto a high dimensional feature space and performing PCA there. Through KPCA, nonlinear relations in the input space are detected as linear relations in the feature space. Furthermore, explicit computation of the mapping is not necessary in KPCA. Only dot products of the mapped data items in the feature space are required which are obtained directly from the input data using a kernel function. Moreover, control limits of traditional statistical process monitoring indices are usually determined under assumption of normal (Gaussian) distribution. Although, it is recognized that this is inappropriate in nonlinear processes, the impact of using kernel density estimation (KDE), which is a nonparametric method, to determine control limits in KPCA-based process monitoring has not been reported. This paper seeks to bridge this gap. The KPCA with KDE approach is applied to the Tennessee Eastman process for the detection of faults. The results confirm that associating KPCA with kernel density estimated control limits provides better monitoring performance than using control limits based on the normal probability density function.
Read moreA New Scene Classification Method Based on Local Gabor Features
A new scene classification method is proposed based on the combination of local Gabor features with a spatial pyramid matching model. First, new local Gabor feature descriptors are extracted from dense sampling patches of scene images. These local feature descriptors are embedded into a bag-of-visual-words (BOVW) model, which is combined with a spatial pyramid matching framework. The new local Gabor feature descriptors have sufficient discrimination abilities for dense regions of scene images. Then the efficient feature vectors of scene images can be obtained byK-means clustering method and visual word statistics. Second, in order to decrease classification time and improve accuracy, an improved kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) method is applied to reduce the dimensionality of pyramid histogram of visual words (PHOW). The principal components with the bigger interclass separability are retained in feature vectors, which are used for scene classification by the linear support vector machine (SVM) method. The proposed method is evaluated on three commonly used scene datasets. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.
Read moreThe instrument fault detection and identification based on kernel principal component analysis and coupling analysis in process industry
This paper investigates the fault detection problem of instruments in process industry. Considering the difficulty of fault identification and the problems of multivariable and large computation complexity based on traditional kernel principal component analysis (KPCA), this paper presents a new method for fault detection and identification, which combines the coupling analysis with kernel principal component for multivariable fault detection and employed the local outlier factor (LOF) for multivariable fault identification. The new method consists of three parts. Firstly, according to nonlinear correlation of multivariable, coupling analysis and module division of variables based on detrended cross-correlation analysis (DCCA) are considered to reduce false alarm rate (FAR) and missed detection rate (MDR) in fault detection and identification. Secondly, KPCA is employed to detect fault in each sub-module of variables. Finally, for the sub-module which has the fault detected in second step, the LOF is adopted to calculate abnormal contribution of each variable in sub-modules to realize fault identification. To prove that the new method has the better capability of processing multivariable fault detection and the more accuracy rate on fault detection and identification than the conventional methods of KPCA, a case study on Tennessee process is carried out at the end.
Read moreFinancial Risk Early-Warning Model Based on Kernel Principal Component Analysis in Public Hospitals
Public hospitals are facing the dual pressure of coping with external medical market competition and performing public health duties. Due to the influence of various risk factors, public hospitals are facing increasing financial risks. How to effectively prevent and control financial risks and maintain the normal operation and sustainable development of the hospital is a very important topic that needs to be studied in the development of public hospitals. Because the traditional principal component analysis method only pays attention to the global structural features and ignores the local structural features, a financial risk early-warning model based on improved kernel principal component analysis in public hospitals is proposed to improve the ability of risk assessment. The core ideas of the method in this paper for financial risk forecasting are as follows: the nonlinear features of the financial data are firstly extracted under different conditions, and then the feature matrix and the optimal feature vector are calculated to construct the distance statistics so as to determines the threshold by kernel density estimation; finally the Fisher discriminant analysis is used for similarity measurement to identify the risk types. Through experiments on the financial data of a number of public hospitals and listed companies, the experimental results verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the method used in this paper for financial risk analysis. This further shows that this research has a certain display significance.
Read moreGabor-based kernel PCA with fractional power polynomial models for face recognition.
This paper presents a novel Gabor-based kernel Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method by integrating the Gabor wavelet representation of face images and the kernel PCA method for face recognition. Gabor wavelets first derive desirable facial features characterized by spatial frequency, spatial locality, and orientation selectivity to cope with the variations due to illumination and facial expression changes. The kernel PCA method is then extended to include fractional power polynomial models for enhanced face recognition performance. A fractional power polynomial, however, does not necessarily define a kernel function, as it might not define a positive semidefinite Gram matrix. Note that the sigmoid kernels, one of the three classes of widely used kernel functions (polynomial kernels, Gaussian kernels, and sigmoid kernels), do not actually define a positive semidefinite Gram matrix either. Nevertheless, the sigmoid kernels have been successfully used in practice, such as in building support vector machines. In order to derive real kernel PCA features, we apply only those kernel PCA eigenvectors that are associated with positive eigenvalues. The feasibility of the Gabor-based kernel PCA method with fractional power polynomial models has been successfully tested on both frontal and pose-angled face recognition, using two data sets from the FERET database and the CMU PIE database, respectively. The FERET data set contains 600 frontal face images of 200 subjects, while the PIE data set consists of 680 images across five poses (left and right profiles, left and right half profiles, and frontal view) with two different facial expressions (neutral and smiling) of 68 subjects. The effectiveness of the Gabor-based kernel PCA method with fractional power polynomial models is shown in terms of both absolute performance indices and comparative performance against the PCA method, the kernel PCA method with polynomial kernels, the kernel PCA method with fractional power polynomial models, the Gabor wavelet-based PCA method, and the Gabor wavelet-based kernel PCA method with polynomial kernels.
Read moreOn-Line Nonlinear Process Monitoring Using Kernel Principal Component Analysis and Neural Network
As a valid statistical tool, principal component analysis (PCA) has been widely used in industrial process monitoring. But due to its intrinsic linear character, it performs badly in nonlinear process monitoring. Kernel PCA (KPCA) can extract useful information in nonlinear data. However KPCA-based monitoring is not suitable for on-line monitoring because of large calculation and much memory occupation. The paper introduces an on-line monitoring method based on KPCA and neural network (NN), where KPCA is used to extract nonlinear principal components (PCs) and then NN approximates the relationship between process data and nonlinear PCs. We can obtain nonlinear PCs by NN to compute the monitoring indices and then achieve the on-line monitoring. The case study shows the validity of the method.KeywordsNeural NetworkKernel Principal Component AnalysisMonitoring IndexMemory OccupationComplex Industrial ProcessThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. Read moreOnline identification using radial basis function neural network coupled with KPCA
In this paper, we are going to propose an online radial basis function (RBF) neural network algorithm without any preprocessing step. Then a kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) is coupled with the proposed online RBF neural network algorithm. Indeed, the KPCA method is used as a preprocessing step to reduce the feature dimension which fed to the RBF neural network. Reducing memory requirements of the models makes RBF neural network training efficient and fast. These two proposed algorithms are applied, with success, for identification of a mobile robot position. The simulation results present that the used sigmoid function as a kernel, compared to other kernel functions, which gives an excellent model and a minimum mean square error.
Read moreA robust kernel PCA algorithm
This paper presents a novel algorithm - robust kernel principal component analysis (robust KPCA), on the basis of the research of kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) and robust principal component analysis (RPCA). First, this algorithm sets the radius of the images of the training samples in the feature space using kernel tricks, then determines whether the samples are outliers or not, and finally analyzes the training samples which have eliminated the outliers using KPCA algorithm. The improved KPCA algorithm not only retains the non-linearity property of KPCA algorithm but also gets better robustness. Because the effects of outliers are eliminated, robust KPCA algorithm gets higher accuracy than KPCA algorithm for data analysis. The simulation experiments show that the robust KPCA algorithm developed is better than the KPCA algorithm.

Process monitoring is an integral part of chemical process, required higher product quality and safety operation. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to ensure the suitable functioning and to improve the fault detection performance of conventional kernel Principal Components Analysis (KPCA). Thus, an online Reduced Rank KPCA (OnRR-KPCA) with adaptive model has been developed to monitor a dynamic nonlinear process. The developed method is proposed. Firstly, to extract the useful observations, from large amount of training data registered in normal operating conditions, in order to construct the reduced reference model. Secondly, to monitor the process online and update the reference model if a new useful observation is available and satisfies the condition of independencies between variables in feature space. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the OnRR-KPCA with adaptive model over the conventional KPCA and the RR-KPCA, the fault detection performances are illustrated through two examples: one using synthetic data, the second using a simulated Tennessee Eastman Process (TEP) data.

In this paper, the kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) is applied to perform the translation quality classification and evaluation of human-machine composite subject of scientific text. Firstly, four different translations are quantified by means of questionnaire survey according to the basic standards of Chinese-English translation. Then, the quantitative data is evaluated by Gaussian kernel function and polynomial kernel function. The results show that, on the one hand, the translation qualities of machine translation, professional translator and scientific researcher approximate to form an equilateral triangle in two-dimensional evaluation space, which indicates that the qualities of the above three translations is independent of each other in terms of evaluation space, and the translation quality of computer-aided scientific researcher is closest to the translation quality of professional translator; on the other hand, when the evaluation space dimension is reduced to one-dimensional, Gaussian kernel function can still get similar result, but polynomial kernel function gives different result when its order is greater than a certain threshold.

With the increasingly large-scale, continuous, and complicated chemical process, it is particularly important to ensure the stability and safety of the production process. However, in past studies, the accuracy of fault diagnosis and the degree of system visualization are still insufficient. Here, in order to solve these problems, a visual fault diagnosis system based on LabVIEW and Matlab is designed. First, the system uses LabVIEW interface design, applying Matlab to compile the algorithm program, which makes the system has a powerful data calculation and processing functions, as well as a clear visual interface, the system design also optimizes the communication interface. Second, the typical chemical production process TE (Tennessee Eastman) process is the subject of systematic testing. Additionally, because most of the industrial processes are non-linear, the fault diagnosis method based on Kernel Principal Component Analysis (KPCA) is used in the system design, and the implementation process of this method is elaborated. Finally, the system achieves the functions of TE process data acquisition, data preprocessing, and fault diagnosis lamps. A large number of simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The system has entered the stage of laboratory application and provides a good application platform for the research of fault diagnosis of complex systems such as chemical process control.
