Old Open Clusters as Tracers of Galactic Evolution

I present a literature search through 31 July 1997 of white dwarfs (WDs) in open and globular clusters. There are 36 single WDs and 5 WDs in binaries known among 13 open clusters, and 340 single WDs and 11 WDs in binaries known among 11 globular clusters. From these data I have calculated WD mass fractions for four open clusters (the Pleiades, NGC 2168, NGC 3532, and the Hyades) and one globular cluster (NGC 6121). I develop a simple model of cluster evolution that incorporates stellar evolution but not dynamical evolution to interpret the WD mass fractions. I augment the results of my simple model with N-body simulations incorporating stellar evolution (Terlevich 1987; de la Feunte Marcos 1996; Vesperini & Heggie 1997). I find that even though these clusters undergo moderate to strong kinematical evolution the WD mass fraction is relatively insensitive to kinematical evolution. By comparing the cluster mass functions to that of the Galactic disk, and incorporating plausibility arguments for the mass function of the Galactic halo, I estimate the WD mass fraction in these two populations. I assume the Galactic disk is ~10 Gyrs old (Winget et al. 1987; Liebert, Dahn, & Monet 1988; Oswalt et al. 1996) and that the Galactic halo is ~12 Gyrs old (Reid 1997b; Gratton et al. 1997; Chaboyer et al. 1998), although the WD mass fraction is insensitive to age in this range. I find that the Galactic halo should contain 8 to 9% (alpha = -2.35) or perhaps as much as 15 to 17% (alpha = -2.0) of its stellar mass in the form of WDs. The Galactic disk WD mass fraction should be 6 to 7% (alpha = -2.35), consistent with the empirical estimates of 3 to 7% (Liebert, Dahn, & Monet 1988; Oswalt et al. 1996). (abridged)

A widely supported formation scenario for the Galactic disc is that it formed inside-out from material accumulated via accretion events. The Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr dSph) is the best example of such an accretion, and its ongoing disruption has resulted in that its stars are being deposited in the Milky Way halo and outer disc. It is therefore appealing to search for possible signatures of the Sgr dSph contribution to the build-up of the Galactic disc. Interestingly, models of the Sgr dSph stream clearly indicate that the trailing tail passes through the outer Galactic disc, at the same Galactocentric distance as some anticentre old open star clusters. We investigate in this Letter the possibility that the two outermost old open clusters, Berkeley 29 and Saurer 1, could have formed inside the Sgr dSph and then left behind in the outer Galactic disc as a result of tidal interaction with the Milky Way. The actual location of these two star clusters, inside the Sgr dSph trailing tail, is compatible with this scenario, and their chemical and kinematical properties, together with our present understanding of the age–metallicity relationship in the Sgr dSph, lend further support to this possible association. Hence, we find it likely that the old open star clusters, Berkeley 29 and Saurer 1, have extragalactic origins.

Context. Open clusters exquisitely track the Galactic disc chemical properties and its time evolution; a substantial number of studies and large spectroscopic surveys focus mostly on the chemical content of relatively old clusters (age ≳ 1 Gyr). Interestingly, the less studied young counterpart populating the solar surrounding has been found to be solar (at most), with a notable surprising lack of young metal-rich objects. While there is wide consensus about the moderately above-solar composition of the Hyades cluster, the metallicity of Praesepe is still controversial. Recent studies suggest that these two clusters share identical chemical composition and age, but this conclusion is disputed. Aims. With the aim of reassessing the metallicity of Praesepe, and its difference (if any) with the Hyades cluster, we present in this paper a spectroscopic investigation of ten solar-type dwarf members. Methods. We exploited GIARPS at the TNG to acquire high-resolution, high-quality optical and near-IR spectra and derived stellar parameters, metallicity ([Fe/H]), light elements, α- and iron-peak elements, by using a strictly differential (line-by-line) approach. We also analysed in the very same way the solar spectrum and the Hyades solar analogue HD 28099. Results. Our findings suggest that Praesepe is more metal-rich than the Hyades, at the level of Δ[Fe/H] = +0.05 ± 0.01 dex, with a mean value of [Fe/H] = +0.21 ± 0.01 dex. All the other elements scale with iron, as expected. This result seems to reject the hypothesis of a common origin for these two open clusters. Most importantly, Praesepe is currently the most metal-rich, young open cluster living in the solar neighbourhood.

We present UBVRI and CT1T2 photometry for fifteen catalogued open clusters of relative high brightness and compact appearance. From these unprecedented photometric data sets, covering wavelengths from the blue up to the near-infrared, we performed a thorough assessment of their reality as stellar aggregates. We statistically assigned to each observed star within the object region a probability of being a fiducial feature of that field in terms of its local luminosity function, colour distribution and stellar density. Likewise, we used accurate parallaxes and proper motions measured by the Gaia satellite to help our decision on the open cluster reality. Ten catalogued aggregates did not show any hint of being real physical systems; three of them had been assumed to be open clusters in previous studies, though. On the other hand, we estimated reliable fundamental parameters for the remaining five studied objects, which were confirmed as real open clusters. They resulted to be clusters distributed in a wide age range, 8.0 < log(t yr-1) < 9.4, of solar metal content and placed between 2.0 and 5.5 kpc from the Sun. Their ages and metallicities are in agreement with the presently known picture of the spatial distribution of open clusters in the Galactic disc.

We present the Milky Way Star Clusters (MWSC) survey based on 470 million stars extracted from the all-sky catalogues PPMXL and 2mass. The target list comprises 3784 entries and includes all open and globular clusters, as well as all cluster candidates, known at present. By means of a combined photometric/astrometric pipeline process, we determine individual membership probabilities for cluster stars and provide fundamental cluster parameters such as cluster centre coordinates, mean proper motions, radial velocity, distance, reddening, age and tidal radius. This sample includes ~ 700 clusters with fundamental parameters based on optical data and offers a good opportunity for a comparison of the near-infrared (NIR) and optical cluster distance scales. We find that distances and reddening values obtained from the colour–magnitude diagrams (CMDs) in the NIR agree well with earlier distance estimates based on optical CMDs. These newly obtained homogeneous distances, together with the other cluster parameters, allow us to study the properties of the open cluster population in the Galactic disk.

<i>Context. <i/>Observations indicate that the fraction of potential binary star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds is about 10%. In contrast, it is widely accepted that the binary cluster frequency in the Galaxy disk is much lower.<i>Aims. <i/>Here we investigate the multiplicity of clusters in the Milky Way disk to either confirm or disprove this dearth of binaries.<i>Methods. <i/>We quantify the open cluster multiplicity using complete, volume-limited samples from WEBDA and NCOVOCC.<i>Results. <i/>At the Solar Circle, at least 12% of all open clusters appear to be experiencing some type of interaction with another cluster; i.e., are possible binaries. As in the Magellanic Clouds, the pair separation histogram hints at a bimodal distribution. Nearly 40% of identified pairs are probably primordial. Most of the remaining pairs could be undergoing some type of close encounter, perhaps as a result of orbital resonances. Confirming early theoretical predictions, the characteristic time scale for destruction of bound pairs in the disk is 200 Myr, or one galactic orbit.<i>Conclusions. <i/>Our results show that the fraction of possible binary clusters in the Galactic disk is comparable to that in the Magellanic Clouds.

Stars in an open cluster are assumed to have formed from a broadly homogeneous distribution of gas, implying that they should be chemically homogeneous. Quantifying the level to which open clusters are chemically homogeneous can therefore tell us about interstellar medium pollution and gas mixing in progenitor molecular clouds. Using Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)-V Milky Way Mapper and SDSS-IV Apache Point Observatory Galaxy Evolution Experiment DR17 abundances, we test this assumption by quantifying intrinsic chemical scatter in up to 20 different chemical abundances across 26 Milky Way open clusters. We find that we can place 3σ upper limits on open cluster homogeneity within 0.02 dex or less in the majority of elements, while for neutron capture elements, as well as those elements having weak lines, we place limits on their homogeneity within 0.2 dex. Finally, we find that giant stars in open clusters are ∼0.01 dex more homogeneous than a matched sample of field stars.

Context. Open clusters (OCs) are popular tracers of the structure and evolutionary history of the Galactic disc. The OC population is often considered to be complete within 1.8 kpc of the Sun. The recent Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) allows the latter claim to be challenged. Aims. We perform a systematic search for new OCs in the direction of Perseus using precise and accurate astrometry from Gaia DR2. Methods. We implemented a coarse-to-fine search method. First, we exploited spatial proximity using a fast density-aware partitioning of the sky via a k-d tree in the spatial domain of Galactic coordinates, (l, b). Secondly, we employed a Gaussian mixture model in the proper motion space to tag fields quickly around OC candidates. Thirdly, we applied an unsupervised membership assignment method, UPMASK, to scrutinise the candidates. We visually inspected colour-magnitude diagrams to validate the detected objects. Finally, we performed a diagnostic to quantify the significance of each identified over-density in proper motion and in parallax space. Results. We report the discovery of 41 new stellar clusters. This represents an increment of at least 20% of the previously known OC population in this volume of the Milky Way. We also report on the clear identification of NGC 886, an object previously considered an asterism. This study challenges the previous claim of a near-complete sample of OCs up to 1.8 kpc. Our results reveal that this claim requires revision, and a complete census of nearby OCs is yet to be found.

We have compiled two new open cluster catalogs. In the first one, there are 119 objects with ages, distances, and metallicities available, while in the second one, 144 objects have both absolute proper motion and radial velocity data, of which 45 clusters also have metallicity data available. Taking advantage of the large number of objects included in our sample, we present an iron radial gradient of about -0.063 ± 0.008 dex kpc-1 from the first sample, which is quite consistent with the most recent determination of the oxygen gradient from nebulae and young stars, about -0.07 dex kpc-1. By dividing clusters into age groups, we show that the iron gradient was steeper in the past, which is consistent with the recent result from Galactic planetary nebulae data, and also consistent with inside-out galactic disk formation scenarios. Based on the cluster sample, we also discuss the metallicity distribution, cluster kinematics, and space distribution. A disk age-metallicity relation could be implied by those properties, although we cannot give conclusive result from the age- metallicity diagram based on the current sample. More observations are needed for metal-poor clusters. From the second catalog, we have calculated the velocity components in cylindrical coordinates with respect to the Galactic standard of rest for 144 open clusters. The velocity dispersions of the older clusters are larger than those of young clusters, but they are all much smaller than that of the Galactic thick disk stars.

The latest Gaia Data Release 3 provides an opportunity to expand the census of Galactic open clusters harboring classical Cepheid variables, thereby bolstering the cosmic distance scale. A comprehensive analysis yielded a total of 50 classical Cepheids associated with 45 open clusters, of which 39 open cluster-classical Cepheid pairs are considered probable, with the remaining 11 pairs considered improbable but worth following up. Two previously identified clusters by us possibly host classical Cepheids (OC-0125/V1788 Cyg and OC-0675/OGLE-BLG-CEP-114). In addition, we identify 38 new open cluster candidates within the Galactic disk.

We identified blue straggler stars (BSSs) in 53 open clusters utilizing data from Gaia DR3. Most of these clusters are situated in the outer regions of the Galactic disk, encompassing structures such as the warp and the Outer arm. We analyzed their astrometric parameters and determined that 48 of them demonstrate high reliability in the radial density profile. Furthermore, through manual isochrone fitting and visual inspection, we confirmed 119 BSS candidates and identified 328 additional possible candidates within these clusters. Our results contribute to a 46% increase in the sample size of BSSs in open clusters for regions of the Galactic disk where R gc &gt; 12 kpc. We observed that the new samples are fainter compared to those identified in the past. Additionally, we investigated the maximum fractional mass excess (M e ) of the BSSs in open clusters, including previously published BSS samples. Our findings indicate a strong correlation between the capability to produce highest-M e BSSs and the mass of their host clusters. This observation appears to reinforce a fundamental principle whereby an increase in the mass of a star cluster correlates with a higher likelihood of stellar mergers. In contrast, we observe minimal correlation between maximum-M e and the cluster age. Among clusters containing BSSs, younger clusters (0.5–1 Gyr) display a scarcity of high-M e BSSs. This scarcity may be attributed to the absence of more massive clusters within this age range.

The currently accepted paradigm for star formation assumes that field stars are born in clusters. These are not formed in isolation but in stellar complexes born out of giant molecular clouds. In the Galactic disk, molecular clouds have distinctive orbits, which, as they disappear after star formation is complete, may seed the Galactic disk with families of young clusters. These families gradually disperse to become individual clusters and, eventually, field populations. We investigate the existence of dynamical families of open clusters in the solar neighborhood using both age- and volume-limited samples from WEBDA in the framework of scan statistics. Our analysis indicates that a significant number of known young clusters organize in groups when age, spatial distribution, and kinematics are taken into account simultaneously. We find compelling statistical evidence for the presence of at least five dynamical families of young open clusters in the Milky Way disk associated to the underlying spiral structure. The young cluster population seems to be dominated by families of 10-20 objects; they are short-lived and the likely progenitors of classical moving groups, and stellar streams. Available observational data suggests that 50%-80% of newly formed open clusters dissolve within 20 Myr of formation to become field population. The overall age distribution of open clusters shows a steep decline, -->dN/dτ τβ, with -->β = − 3.6 ± 0.5 for clusters younger than 100 Myr, although it could be dependent on the local conditions as it ranges from -->β = − 1.0 ± 0.2 in the direction of Puppis to -->β = − 2.8 ± 0.5 in Norma. Due to the high rate of destruction among young clusters, any cluster-related coherent substructure must be younger than about 30 Myr unless it is the result of dynamically induced corotation resonances within the Galactic disk or minor mergers. The characteristic timescale for stars to become part of the field stellar populations is 10-20 Myr.

Context: Open clusters are ideal test particles for studying the formation and evolution of the Galactic disk. However, the number of clusters with information about their radial velocities and chemical compositions remains largely insufficient. Aims: We attempt to increase the number of open clusters with determinations of radial velocities and metallicities from spectroscopy. Methods: We acquired medium-resolution spectra (R~8000) in the region of the infrared Ca II triplet lines (~8500\AA) for several stars in four open clusters with the long-slit spectrograph IDS at the 2.5m Isaac Newton Telescope, Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, Spain. Radial velocities were obtained by cross-correlating the observed spectra with those of two template stars. We used the relationships available in the literature between the strength of infrared Ca II lines and metallicities to derive the metal content of each cluster. Results: We provide the first spectroscopic determinations of radial velocities and metallicities for the open clusters Berkeley 26, Berkeley 70, NGC 1798, and NGC 2266. We obtain <V_r>=68$\pm$12, -15$\pm$7, 2$\pm$10, and -16$\pm$15 km s$^{-1}$ for Berkeley 26, Berkeley 70, NGC 1798, and NGC 2266, respectively. For Berkeley 26 we derive a metallicity of [Fe/H]=-0.35$\pm$0.17 dex. Berkeley 70 has a solar metallicity of [Fe/H]=-0.01$\pm$0.14 dex, while NGC 1798 has a slightly lower metal content of [Fe/H]=-0.12$\pm$0.07 dex. Finally, we derive a metallicity of [Fe/H]=-0.38$\pm$0.06 dex for NGC 2266.
