On Almost Projective Modules

The direct sum behaviour of its projective modules is a fundamental property of any ring. Hereditary Noetherian prime rings are perhaps the only noncommutative Noetherian rings for which this direct sum behaviour (for both finitely and infinitely generated projective modules) is well-understood, yet highly nontrivial . This book surveys material previously available only in the research literature. It provides a re-worked and simplified account, with improved clarity, fresh insights and many original results about finite length modules, injective modules and projective modules. It culminates in the authors' surprisingly complete structure theorem for projective modules which involves two independent additive invariants: genus and Steinitz class. Several applications demonstrate its utility. The theory, extending the well-known module theory of commutative Dedekind domains and of hereditary orders, develops via a detailed study of simple modules. This relies upon the substantial account of idealiser subrings which forms the first part of the book and provides a useful general construction tool for interesting examples. The book assumes some knowledge of noncommutative Noetherian rings, including Goldie's theorem. Beyond that, it is largely self-contained, thanks to the appendix which provides succinct accounts of Artinian serial rings and, for arbitrary rings, results about lifting direct sum decompositions from finite length images of projective modules. The appendix also describes some open problems.

Let N be a normal subgroup of a group G. An N-module Q is called G-stable provided that Q is equivalent to the twist Q g of Q by g, for every g ∈ G. If the action of N on Q extends to an action of G on Q, then Q is obviously G-stable, but the converse need not hold. A famous conjecture in the modular representation theory of reductive algebraic groups G asserts that the (obviously G-stable) projective indecomposable modules (PIMs) Q for the Frobenius kernels G r (r ≥ 1) of G have a G-module structure. It is sometimes just as useful (for a general module Q) to know that a finite direct sum Q ⊕ n of Q has a compatible G-module structure. In this paper, this property is called numerical stability. In recent work (Parshall and Scott, Adv Math 226:2065–2088, 2011), the authors established numerical stability in the special case of PIMs. We provide in this paper a more general context for that result, working in the context of k-group schemes and a suitable version of G-stability, called strong G-stability. Among our results here is the determination of necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a compatible G-module structure on a strongly G-stable N-module, in the form of a cohomological obstruction which must be trivial precisely when the G-module structure exists. Our main result is achieved by giving an approach to killing the obstruction by tensoring with certain finite dimensional G/N-modules.

In this paper, we introduce and study the properties of chain conditions on M-cyclic submodules defined as M-Noetherian and M-Artinian modules and rings. We prove that the property of being iso-M-Noetherian (iso-M-Artinian) is inherited by submodules, quotient modules, and finite sums as well as finite direct sums. Finally, we prove the Hilbert basis theorem for iso-M-Noetherian (iso-M-Artinian) and verify that the property of modules of being M-Noetherian (M-Artinian) and iso-M-Noetherian (iso-M-Artinian) are Morita invariant.

A module [Formula: see text] is called coseparable ([Formula: see text]-coseparable) if for every submodule [Formula: see text] of [Formula: see text] such that [Formula: see text] is finitely generated ([Formula: see text] is simple), there exists a direct summand [Formula: see text] of [Formula: see text] such that [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] is finitely generated. In this paper, we show that free modules are coseparable. We also investigate whether or not the ([Formula: see text]-)coseparability is stable under taking submodules, factor modules, direct summands, direct sums and direct products. We show that a finite direct sum of coseparable modules is not, in general, coseparable. But the class of [Formula: see text]-coseparable modules is closed under finite direct sums. Moreover, it is shown that the class of coseparable modules over noetherian rings is closed under finite direct sums. A characterization of coseparable modules over noetherian rings is provided. It is also shown that every lifting (H-supplemented) module is coseparable ([Formula: see text]-coseparable).

A module M is called dual automorphism invariant if whenever X1 and X2 are small submodules of M, then each epimorphism f : M/X1 → M/X2 lifts to an endomorphism g of M. A module M is said to be d-square free (dual square free) if whenever some factor module of M is isomorphic to N2 for a module N then N = 0. We show that each dual automorphism invariant module over a semiperfect ring which is a small epimorphic image of a projective lifting module is a direct sum of cyclic indecomposable d-square free modules. Moreover, we prove that for each module M over a semiperfect ring which is a small epimorphic image of a projective lifting module (e.g., M is a finitely generated module), M is dual automorphism invariant iff M is pseudoprojective. Also, we give the necessary and sufficient conditions for a dual automorphism invariant module over a right perfect ring to be quasiprojective.

In this research, the concepts injective and projective semi modules have been generalized to generalized-injective(projective) and essentially-injective semimodules, also the relationship of these concepts with almost-injective(projective) semimodules have been discussed. The semiring having the properties that every quasi- injective semimodule is injective and every almost self-injective semimodule is injective have been defined. Some results between these concepts have been obtained like, every almost-injective is generalized-injective semimodule, the definitions, where a semi module is indecomposable have been discussed. Dually for almost-projective semimodule. Also obtained that, the direct sum of two quasi-injective Ȑ-semimodule is quasi-injective when Ȑ is QI-semiring, this fact has been expanded to AQI-semiring.
 Conclusion: In this paper, several generalization of injective and projective semi modules have been defined and some concepts with related to almost injective(projective)semimodules have been presented, also the concepts QI-semiring, AQI-semiring defined, some relationship between these concepts and almost injective(projective) semimodules discussed.

Let G be a finite group with a Sylow 2-subgroup P which is either quaternion or semi-dihedral. Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2. We prove the existence of exotic endotrivial kG -modules, whose restrictions to P are isomorphic to the direct sum of the known exotic endotrivial kP -modules and some projective modules. This provides a description of the group T (G) of endotrivial kG -modules.

We prove that each almost local-global semihereditary ring R has the stacked bases property and is almost Bézout. More precisely, if M is a finitely presented module, its torsion part tM is a direct sum of cyclic modules where the family of annihilators is an ascending chain of invertible ideals. These ideals are invariants of M. Moreover, M/tM is a projective module which is isomorphic to a direct sum of finitely generated ideals. These ideals allow us to define a finitely generated ideal whose isomorphism class is an invariant of M. The idempotents and the positive integers defined by the rank of M/tM are invariants of M too. It follows that each semihereditary ring of Krull-dimension one or of finite character, in particular each hereditary ring, has the stacked base property. These results were already proved for Prüfer domains by Brewer, Katz, Klinger, Levy, and Ullery. It is also shown that every semihereditary Bézout ring of countable character is an elementary divisor ring.

Kaplansky [2] proved that if P is a projective module, then every f.g. submodule of P is contained in a finitely generated direct summand iff P is the direct sum of f.g. projectives. We show that in order that all injectives have the dual property to the above statement,, for ach pair of simples (S1, S2), Hom(Ŝ1,Ŝ2) must be an Artinian and Noet. i.ian End(Ŝ1) module where i. is the injective hull of Ŝi. This leads to a study of universally cotorsionless modules.

For a ring R, there are classical facts that R is right Noetherian if and only if every direct sum of injective right R-modules is injective, and R is right Noetherian if and only if every essential extension of a direct sum of injective hulls of simple right R-modules is a direct sum of injective right R-modules. In this paper, we prove that R is right Noetherian if and only if every essential extension of a direct sum of injective hulls of simple right R-modules is a direct sum of either injective right R-modules or projective right R-modules.

This paper investigates the structure of cyclically pure (or C-pure) projective modules. In particular, it is shown that a ring R is left Noetherian if and only if every C-pure projective left R-module is pure projective. Also, over a left hereditary Noetherian ring R, a left R-module M is C-pure projective if and only if M = N ⊕ P, where N is a direct sum of cyclic modules and P is a projective left R-module. The relationship C-purity with purity and RD-purity are also studied. It is shown that if R is a local duo-ring, then the C-pure projective left R-modules and the pure projective left R-modules coincide if and only if R is a principal ideal ring. If R is a left perfect duo-ring, then the C-pure projective left R-modules and the pure projective left R-modules coincide if and only if R is left Köthe (i.e., every left R-module is a direct sum of cyclic modules). Also, it is shown that for a ring R, if every C-pure projective left R-module is RD-projective, then R is left Noetherian, every p-injective left R-module is injective and every p-flat right R-module is flat. Finally, it is shown that if R is a left p.p-ring and every C-pure projective left R-module is RD-projective, then R is left Noetherian hereditary. The converse is also true when R is commutative, but it does not hold in the noncommutative case.

Continuing an earlier examination of the codominant dimension of rings and modules, a categorical characterization is given for rings of equivalent dominant and codominant dimensions. Specifically, the question is reduced to when R R and the left minimal injective cogenerator R can be used as test modules respectively for the dominant dimension of the projective modules and the codominant dimension of the injective modules. These conditions are in turn characterized by when the injective projective modules are Z-injective. Also, a new and shortened version is given for the proof that the codominant dimension of the injective modules is equal to the dominant dimension of the projective modules. Throughout, R is an associative ring with unity and all modules considered are unital. We denote a minimal injective cogenerator for R)R by R such being isomorphic to an injective hull of a direct sum of a complete representative class of simple left R-modules. For a left perfect ring R and a left R-module RM we define the codominant dimension of RM, denoted codom dim RM, to be greater than or equal to n if for a minimal projective resolution . P* P M 0, Pi is injective for i = 1, 29, . . ., n. The left codominant dimesnion of R is defined to be codom dim RU. The dominant dimension of RM is defined in a dual manner, and the left dominant dimension of R is dom dimRR. Further, for R left perfect, we define codom dimR9 to be infIcodom dim RE: RE injectivel. Similarly, dom dim Ris given by inf dom dimRP: RP projectivel. Finally, we say that RE (nRP) is a test module for RI (RT) provided codom dim RE= codom dimRI (dom dimR P = dom dimRY). Non-finitely generated projective modules over generalized Weyl algebras

A well-known theorem of Kaplansky states that any projective module is a direct sum of countably generated modules. In this paper, we prove the w-version of this theorem, where w is a hereditary torsion theory for modules over a commutative ring.Communicated by Silvana Bazzoni
