We will define and examine the $(n,\varepsilon)$-pseudospectra and condition $(n,\varepsilon)$-pseudospectra of an element pencil in a unital complex Banach algebra. We characterize the $(n,\varepsilon)$-pseudospectra of an element pencil in a unital complex Banach algebra. Let \(\mathcal{A}\) be a complex unital Banach algebra. An element a ∈ \(\mathcal{A}\) is said to be Hermitian if ‖exp(ita)‖ = 1 for all t ∈ ℝ. LetA be a matrix over a complex commutative unital Banach algebra. We give necessary and sufficient conditions forA to have a generalized inverse. Moreover, if the Banach algebra has a symmetric involution, these are also necessary and sufficient conditions forA to admit the Moore-Penrose inverse.

For a matrix over a complex commutative unital Banach algebra, necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the existence of its group inverse, and more generally, its Drazin inverses. The conditions are easy to check and explicit formulas for the inverses are provided. Some properties of the inverses and an application to operator theory are discussed. This note is a continuation of an earlier work of the author.

Abstract. The necessary and sufficient conditions for stability of abstract difference schemes in Hilbert and Banach spaces are formulated. Contrary to known stability results we give stability conditions for schemes with non-self-adjoint operator coefficients in a Hilbert space and with strongly positive operator coefficients in a Banach space. It is shown that the parameters of the sectorial spectral domain play the crucial role. As an application we consider the Richardson iteration scheme for an operator equation in a Banach space, in particulary the Richardson iteration with precondition for a finite element scheme for a non-selfadjoint operator. The theoretical results are also the basis when using the regularization principle to construct stable difference schemes. For this aim we start from some simple scheme (even unstable) and derive stable schemes by perturbing the initial operator coefficients and by taking into account the stability conditions. Our approach is also valid for schemes with unbounded operator coefficients.

On constructing multiplications on Banach spaces

Let E be a complex Banach space and F be a complex Banach algebra. We will be interested in the subspace ℙ_f({}^n E,F) of P({}^n E,F) generated by the collection of functions \varphi^n(n\in ℕ, \varphi \in L(E,F)) where \varphi^n(x) = (\varphi (x))^n for each x\in E .

We show that a real Banach algebra $A$ such that $\Vert a^{2}\Vert =\Vert a\Vert^{2}$ for $a\in A$ is a subalgebra of the algebra $C_{\mathbb{H}}( X) $ of continuous quaternion-valued functions on a compact set $X$.

Semilinear operators on a complex Hilbert space are studied in a part of a program that aims to develop the theories of additive operators on complex and quaternionic Hilbert spaces for application to problems in mathematical physics. The more notable among the new results proved on the eigenvalue problem for semilinear operators are the following: (i) if α is an eigenvalue of a semilinear operator then so also is any complex number which has the same modulus as α; (ii) if a normal semilinear operator has two eigenvectors belonging to different eigenvalues, then either the two eigenvectors are orthogonal or two eigenvalues have the same moduli; and (iii) a normal semilinear operator has a complete set of eigenvectors if and only if it is self-adjoint. Further, it is shown that there exists a norm-preserving semilinear isomorphism between the spaces of bounded linear and semilinear operators on a complex Hilbert space. Finally it is demonstrated how the theory of semilinear operators can be exploited to solve the problems of finding three involutive mutually anticommuting self-adjoint two-by-two matrices and four four-by-four matrices with the same properties: the unusual and remarkably easy solution of this old familiar exercise establishes the relevance of the theory being developed here to physics.

Weakly closed, commutative, symmetric rings of operators on a Hilbert space are examined and their structure is ex ploited to characterize normal operators in terms of the rings they generate. In the first chapter, notation is established, and the less common theorems from Hilbert space theory not to be used in later sections are briefly reviewed. In Chapter II, the structure of weakly closed, commu tative, symmetric rings with a cyclic vector is specified. This theorem is then used in conjunction with a strucure called a canonical decomposition system to establish that every weakly closed, commutative, symmetric ring or opera tors acting on a separable space and containing the iden tity is spatially isomorphic to a "divect sum" of L rings of a certain type. In Chapter III, two sets of necessary and sufficient conditions are given for two normal operators on a separ able Hilbert space to be unitarily equivalent. The concept of a spectral class of a normal operator is introduced -a natural generalization of the concept of an eigen value. Each spectral class is assigned a multiplicity, and it is shown that two normal operators are unitarily equivalent iff they have the same spectral classes with the same respective multiplicities. A multiplicity is iv also defined for weakly continuous positive functionals o n the symmetric ring generated by a normal operator in the weak topology, and it is shown that this multiplicity function determines the operator. This multiplicity theory is compared w i t h a previous theory. v CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION We shall be concerned in this paper with rings of operators on a Hilbert space, in particular, weakly closed, commutative, symmetric rings. All Hilbert spaces to be considered will be complex Hilbert spaces. If H is a Hilbert space and x,y e H, then (x(y) will denote the inner product of x and y, and 1 Jxi| will denote the norm of x. We shall consider only bounded linear operators in this paper, and therefore we shall use the word "operator" solely to mean a bounded linear operator. In this case, M is totally disconnected, and the closure of every open set is open. Thus, M contains many sets which are both open and closed, and such sets we call clopen. It is easy to see that projections in E correspond v i a the Gelfand transform to the characteristic functions of clopen sets. This chapter develops the beginnings of abstract functional analysis, a subject designed to study properties of functions by treating the functions as the members of a space and formulating the properties as properties of the space. Section 1 defines Banach spaces as complete normed linear spaces and gives a number of examples of these. The space of bounded linear operators from one normed linear space to another is a normed linear space, and it is a Banach space if the range is a Banach space. Sections 2–3 concern Hilbert spaces. These are Banach spaces whose norms are induced by inner products. Section 2 shows that closed vector subspaces of such a space have orthogonal complements, and it shows the role of orthonormal bases for such a space. Section 3 concentrates on bounded linear operators from a Hilbert space to itself and constructs the adjoint of each such operator. Sections 4–6 prove the three main abstract theorems about the norm topology of general normed linear spaces—the Hahn–Banach Theorem, the Uniform Boundedness or Banach–Steinhaus Theorem, and the Interior Mapping Principle. A number of consequences of these theorems are given. The second and third of the theorems require some hypothesis of completeness. Let \{a_k\}_{k\geq0} be a sequence of complex numbers. We obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence of n^{-1}\sum_{k=0}^na_kT^kx for every contraction T on a Hilbert space H and every x \in H. It is shown that a natural strengthening of the conditions does not yield convergence for all weakly almost periodic operators in Banach spaces, and the relations between the conditions are exhibited. For a strictly increasing sequence of positive integers \{k_j\}, we study the problem of when n^{-1}\sum_{j=1}^nT^{k_j}x converges to a T-fixed point for every weakly almost periodic T or for every contraction in a Hilbert space and not for every weakly almost periodic operator.
