8 - THE SYSTEM OF RATIONAL NUMBERS
It is known that there exists a multiple-unicast network which has a rate 1 linear network coding solution if and only if the characteristic of the finite field belongs to a given finite or co-finite set of primes. In this paper, we present a generalization of this result for a linear network coding solution of any rate. Specifically, we show that for any non-zero positive rational number k/n, there exists a multiple-unicast network which has a rate k/n fractional linear network coding solution if and only if the characteristic of the finite field belongs to a given finite or co-finite set of primes.

Courbes de Fermat et principe de Hasse
Let p≥3 be a prime number. A Fermat curve over Q of exponent p is defined by an equation of the form axp+byp+czp=0, where a, b, c are non-zero rational numbers. We prove in this article that there exist infinitely many Fermat curves defined over Q, of exponent p, pairwise non Q-isomorphic, contradicting the Hasse principle.

On the Degrees-of-Freedom of the K-user Gaussian interference channel
The degrees-of-freedom of a K-user Gaussian interference channel (GIFC) has been defined to be the multiple of (1/2) log 2 P at which the maximum sum of achievable rates grows with increasing P. In this paper, we establish that the degrees-of-freedom of three or more user, real, scalar GIFCs, viewed as a function of the channel coefficients, is discontinuous at points where all of the coefficients are non-zero rational numbers. More specifically, for all K > 2, we find a class of K-user GIFCs that is dense in the GIFC parameter space for which K/2 degrees-of-freedom are exactly achievable, and we show that the degrees-of-freedom for any GIFC with non-zero rational coefficients is strictly smaller than K/2. These results are proved using new connections with number theory and additive combinatorics.

We treat two different equations involving powers of singular moduli. On the one hand, we show that, with two possible (explicitly specified) exceptions, two distinct singular moduli [Formula: see text] such that the numbers [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] are linearly dependent over [Formula: see text] for some positive integers [Formula: see text], must be of degree at most [Formula: see text]. This partially generalizes a result of Allombert, Bilu and Pizarro-Madariaga, who studied CM-points belonging to straight lines in [Formula: see text] defined over [Formula: see text]. On the other hand, we show that, with obvious exceptions, the product of any two powers of singular moduli cannot be a non-zero rational number. This generalizes a result of Bilu, Luca and Pizarro-Madariaga, who studied CM-points belonging to a hyperbola [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text].
Read moreQuantization of the multifold Kepler system
For over a century, the Kepler problem and the harmonic oscillator have been known as the only central force dynamical systems, all of whose bounded motions are periodic. Two of the authors (T. I. and N. K.) have found an infinite number of dynamical systems possessing such a periodicity property, which have been called multi-fold Kepler systems or ν-fold Kepler systems, with ν a positive rational number. If ν is allowed to take the real positive numbers, say ν=α, then for the α-fold Kepler system, all the bounded motions become periodic or not, according to whether the parameter α is a rational number or not. A purpose of this paper is to quantize the α-fold Kepler system and thereby to figure out a quantum analog of the closed orbit property of the α-fold Kepler system. It will turn out that the quantized α-fold Kepler system admits accidental degeneracy in energy levels or not, according to whether α is a rational number or not.

A nonzero rational number is called a {\it cube sum} if it is of the form $a^3+b^3$ with $a,b\in{\Bbb Q}^\times$. In this paper, we prove that for any odd integer $k\geq 1$, there exist infinitely many cube-free odd integers $n$ with exactly $k$ distinct prime factors such that $2n$ is a cube sum (resp. not a cube sum). We present also a general construction of Heegner points and obtain an explicit Gross-Zagier formula which is used to prove the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for certain elliptic curves related to the cube sum problem.

It is established that there exists an absolute constant $c>0$ such that for any finite set $A$ of positive real numbers $$|AA+A| \gg |A|^{\frac{3}{2}+c}.$$ On the other hand, we give an explicit construction of a finite set $A \subset \mathbb R$ such that $|AA+A|=o(|A|^2)$, disproving a conjecture of Balog.

SummaryTwo very new questions about the cardinality of groupoids reduce to very old questions concerning the ancient Egyptians’ method for writing fractions. First, the question of whether any positive real number is the groupoid cardinality of some groupoid reduces to the question of whether any positive rational number has an Egyptian fraction decomposition. Second, the question of how many nonequivalent groupoids have a given cardinality can be answered via the number of distinct Egyptian fraction decompositions.

In this paper, we investigate some basic properties of fractional powers. In this regard, we show that for any non-bipartite graph $G$ and positive rational numbers ${2r+1\over 2s+1} < {2p+1\over 2q+1}$, we have $G^{2r+1\over 2s+1} < G^{2p+1\over 2q+1}$. Next, we study the power thickness of $G$, that is, the supremum of rational numbers ${2r+1\over 2s+1}$ such that $G$ and $G^{2r+1\over 2s+1}$ have the same chromatic number. We prove that the power thickness of any non-complete circular complete graph is greater than one. This provides a sufficient condition for the equality of the chromatic number and the circular chromatic number of graphs. Finally, we introduce an equivalent definition for the circular chromatic number of graphs in terms of fractional powers. Also, we show that for any non-bipartite graph $G$ if $0 < {{2r+1}\over {2s+1}} \leq {{\chi(G)}\over{3(\chi(G)-2)}}$, then $\chi(G^{{2r+1}\over {2s+1}})=3$. Moreover, $\chi(G)\neq\chi_c(G)$ if and only if there exists a rational number ${{2r+1}\over {2s+1}}>{{\chi(G)}\over{3(\chi(G)-2)}}$ for which $\chi(G^{{2r+1}\over {2s+1}})= 3$.

Given a multiplicative group of nonzero rational numbers and a positive integer m m , we consider the problem of determining the density of the set of primes p p for which the order of the reduction modulo p p of the group is divisible by m m . In the case when the group is finitely generated the density is explicitly computed. Some examples of groups with infinite rank are considered.

A commentary on Freudenthal’s didactic phenomenology of the mathematical structures associated with the notion of measurement
This paper discusses Freudenthal's didactical phenomenology for the mathematical structures related to measurement. Freudenthal starts with the set G of all objects having the attribute of weight, an attribute that is to be measured. He proposes two operations, the first one among the measurements themselves, called “addition". Addition is interpreted in terms of the mental actions associated with measurement and, in the case of weights, it consists on the process of placing weights on one of the two dishes of a balance in order to balance them with a predetermined gauge, its fractions or multiples thereof, which are placed on the other. Their total weight is obtained by comparison with a predetermined gauge. The second operation, between weights and positive integers, allow weights to be amplified (by adding as many times as desired their weight measure). A related operation to amplification is that of contraction (by dividing the weight into as many equal parts as desired.) Freudenthal then extends his definitions in order to assign a meaning to the multiplication of a measure by, first, any positive rational number, and, second, by completeness, to any real number. Freudenthal's didactical phenomenology is based on the historical phenomenology of measurement, fractions, decimals and percentages. It is a central tenet of Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) that didactical phenomenologies of mathematical structures constitute proposals from which to make cognitively advantageous teaching sequences for the relevant mathematical structures. We discuss how Freudenthal's phenomenology of the mathematical structures for measurement gets translated into the mathematical models associated with the rational numbers. Finally, we make reference to a paradigmatic teaching unit which incorporates coherently Freudenthal's didactical phenomenology.
