CHAPTER TEN - ROOTS OF POLYNOMIALS
We let Z denote the ring of rational integers, Q the field of rational numbers, R the field of real numbers, and C the field of complex numbers. For elements e and f of a Lie algebra, [e,f] denotes the bracket of e and f. A generalized Cartan matrix C = (cij) is a square matrix of integers satisfying cii = 2, cij ≦ 0 if i ≠ j, cij = 0 if and only if cji = 0. For any generalized Cartan matrix C = (cij) of size l × l and for any field F of characteristic zero, denotes the Lie algebra over F generated by 3l generators e1, …, el, h1, …, hl, f1, …, fl with the defining relationsfor all i, j,for distinct i, j.

Discrete Symmetries and Clifford Algebras
An algebraic description of basic discrete symmetries (space reversal P, time reversal T, and their combination PT) is studied. Discrete subgroups of orthogonal groups of multidimensional spaces over the fields of real and complex numbers are considered in terms of fundamental automorphisms of Clifford algebras. In accordance with a division ring structure, a complete classification of automorphism groups is established for the Clifford algebras over the field of real numbers. The correspondence between eight double coverings (Dąbrowski groups) of the orthogonal group and eight types of the real Clifford algebras is defined with the use of isomorphisms between the automorphism groups and finite groups. Over the field of complex numbers there is a correspondence between two nonisomorphic double coverings of the complex orthogonal group and two types of complex Clifford algebras. It is shown that these correspondences associate with a well-known Atiyah–Bott–Shapiro periodicity. Generalized Brauer–Wall groups are introduced on the extended sets of the Clifford algebras. The structure of the inequality between the two Clifford–Lipschitz groups with mutually opposite signatures is elucidated. The physically important case of the two different double coverings of the Lorentz groups is considered in details.
Read moreJacobi forms over totally real number fields
We define Jacobi forms over a totally real algebraic number field K and construct examples by first embedding the group and the space into the symplectic group and the symplectic upper half space respectively. Then symplectic modular forms are created and Jacobi forms arise by taking the appropriate Fourier coefficients. Also some known relations of Jacobi forms to vector valued modular forms over rational numbers are extended to totally real fields.
Read moreAnalyzing students’ difficulties in understanding real numbers
This article reports on a study of high-school and of technologist students (prospective engineers and economists) understanding of real numbers. Our study was based on written response to a properly designed questionnaire and on interviews taken from students. The quantitative results of our experiment showed an almost complete failure of the technologist students to deal with processes connected to geometric constructions of incommensurable magnitudes. However, this didn’t prevent them in answering satisfactorily the other questions. The superiority of their correct answers with respect to those of high-school students, although the majority of them correspond to mediocre graduates of the secondary education, was evident in most cases. This is a strong indication that the age and the width of mathematical knowledge of the individual play an important role for the better understanding of the real numbers. The results of our experiment suggest also that the ability to transfer in comfort among several representations of real numbers helps students in obtaining a better understanding of them. A theoretical explanation about this is obtained through the adoption of the conceptual framework of dimensions of knowledge, introduced by Tirosh et al. (1998) for studying the comprehension of rational numbers. Following in part the idea of generic decomposition of the APOS analysis (Weller et al. 2009) we suggest a possible order for development of understanding the real numbers by students when teaching them at school. Some questions open to further research are also mentioned at the end of the paper. Keywords: Real, rational, irrational, algebraic and transcendental numbers, fractions, decimals, representations of real numbers.

On fault-tolerant polynomial residue number systems
Fault-tolerant convolution techniques have been described for polynomials defined over the fields of complex and real numbers. Fault-tolerant convolution schemes are derived for polynomials defined over finite integer rings. A new algorithm for simultaneous single fault correction and multiple fault detection is derived that is valid for all cases.

Orthogonal bi-invariant complex structures on metric Lie algebras
This paper studies how many orthogonal bi-invariant complex structures exist on a metric Lie algebra over the real numbers. Recently, it was shown that irreducible Lie algebras which are additionally 2-step nilpotent admit at most one orthogonal bi-invariant complex structure up to sign. The main result generalizes this statement to metric Lie algebras with any number of irreducible factors and which are not necessarily 2-step nilpotent. It states that there are either 0 or $$2^k$$ such complex structures, with k the number of irreducible factors of the metric Lie algebra. The motivation for this problem comes from differential geometry, for instance to construct non-parallel Killing-Yano 2-forms on nilmanifolds or to describe the compact Chern-flat quasi-Kahler manifolds. The main tool we develop is the unique orthogonal decomposition into irreducible factors for metric Lie algebras with no non-trivial abelian factor. This is a generalization of a recent result which only deals with nilpotent Lie algebras over the real numbers. Not only do we apply this fact to describe the orthogonal bi-invariant complex structures on a given metric Lie algebra, but it also gives us a method to study different inner products on a given Lie algebra, computing the number of irreducible factors and orthogonal bi-invariant complex structures for varying inner products.
Read moreAnomaly cancellation for a U(1) factor
A bstract We use methods of arithmetic geometry to find solutions to the abelian local anomaly cancellation equations for a four-dimensional gauge theory whose Lie algebra has a single $${\mathfrak{u}}_{1}$$ summand, assuming that a non-trivial solution exists. The resulting polynomial equations in the integer $${\mathfrak{u}}_{1}$$ charges define a projective cubic hypersurface over the field of rational numbers. Generically, such a hypersurface is (by a theorem of Kollár) unirational, making it possible to find a finitely-many-to-one parameterization of infinitely many solutions using secant and tangent constructions. As an example, for the Standard Model Lie algebra with its three generations of quarks and leptons (or even with just a single generation and two $${\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{u}}_{3}\oplus {\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{u}}_{2}$$ singlet right-handed neutrinos), it follows that there are infinitely many anomaly-free possibilities for the $${\mathfrak{u}}_{1}$$ hypercharges. We also discuss whether it is possible to find all solutions in this way.
