On Stability of Gorenstein Categories

This paper investigates the structure of cyclically pure (or C-pure) projective modules. In particular, it is shown that a ring R is left Noetherian if and only if every C-pure projective left R-module is pure projective. Also, over a left hereditary Noetherian ring R, a left R-module M is C-pure projective if and only if M = N ⊕ P, where N is a direct sum of cyclic modules and P is a projective left R-module. The relationship C-purity with purity and RD-purity are also studied. It is shown that if R is a local duo-ring, then the C-pure projective left R-modules and the pure projective left R-modules coincide if and only if R is a principal ideal ring. If R is a left perfect duo-ring, then the C-pure projective left R-modules and the pure projective left R-modules coincide if and only if R is left Köthe (i.e., every left R-module is a direct sum of cyclic modules). Also, it is shown that for a ring R, if every C-pure projective left R-module is RD-projective, then R is left Noetherian, every p-injective left R-module is injective and every p-flat right R-module is flat. Finally, it is shown that if R is a left p.p-ring and every C-pure projective left R-module is RD-projective, then R is left Noetherian hereditary. The converse is also true when R is commutative, but it does not hold in the noncommutative case.

Given a complete hereditary cotorsion pair$(\mathcal{X}, \mathcal{Y})$, we introduce the concept of$(\mathcal{X}, \mathcal{X} \cap \mathcal{Y})$-Gorenstein projective modules and study its stability properties. As applications, we first get two model structures related to Gorenstein flat modules over a right coherent ring. Secondly, for any non-negative integern, we construct a cofibrantly generated model structure on Mod(R) in which the class of fibrant objects are the modules of Gorenstein injective dimension ≤nover a left Noetherian ringR. Similarly, ifRis a left coherent ring in which all flat leftR-modules have finite projective dimension, then there is a cofibrantly generated model structure on Mod(R) such that the cofibrant objects are the modules of Gorenstein projective dimension ≤n. These structures have their analogous in the category of chain complexes.

Let T be a weak torsion class of left R-modules and n a positive integer. A left R-module M is called (T, n)-injective if Ext (C, M) = 0 for each (T, n + 1)-presented left R-module C; a right R-module M is called (T, n)-flat if Tor (M, C) = 0 for each (T, n +1)-presented left R-module C; a left R-module M is called (T, n)-projective if Ext (M, N) = 0 for each (T, n)-injective left R-module N; the ring R is called strongly (T, n)-coherent if whenever 0 → K → P → C → 0 is exact, where C is (T, n + 1)-presented and P is finitely generated projective, then K is (T, n)-projective; the ring R is called (T, n)-semihereditary if whenever 0 → K → P → C → 0 is exact, where C is (T, n + 1)-presented and P is finitely generated projective, then pd(K) ⩽ n → 1. Using the concepts of (T, n)-injectivity and (T, n)-flatness of modules, we present some characterizations of strongly (T, n)-coherent rings, (T, n)-semihereditary rings and (T, n)-regular rings.

We characterize Ding modules and complexes over Ding-Chen rings. We show that, over a Ding-Chen ring $R$, the Ding projective (respectively, Ding injective, respectively, Ding flat) $R$-modules coincide with the Gorenstein projective (respectively, Gorenstein injective, respectively, Gorenstein flat) modules, which, in turn, are noth\-ing more than modules appearing as a cycle of an exact complex of projective (respectively, injective, respectively, flat) modules. We prove a similar characterization for chain complexes of $R$-modules: a complex~$X$ is Ding projective (respectively, Ding injective, respectively, Ding flat) if and only if each component $X_n$ is Ding projective (respectively, Ding injective, respectively, Ding flat). Along the way, we generalize some results of Stovicek and Bravo, Gillespie and Hovey to obtain other interesting corollaries. For example, we show that, over any Noetherian ring, any exact chain complex with Gorenstein injective components must have all cotorsion cycle modules, that is, $Ext ^1_R(F,Z_nI) = 0$ for any such complex $I$ and flat module $F$. On the other hand, over any coherent ring, the cycles of any exact complex $P$ with projective components must satisfy $Ext ^1_R(Z_nP,A) = 0$ for any absolutely pure module~$A$.

Let R be a left coherent ring, S a right coherent ring and RU a generalized tilting module, with S=End(RU) satisfying the condition that each finitely presented left R-module X with ExtRi(X,U)=0 for any i≥1 is U-torsionless. If M is a finitely presented left R-module such that ExtRi(M,U)=0 for any i≥0 with $i \neq n$ (where n is a nonnegative integer), then $\mathrm {Ext}_S^n( \mathrm {Ext}_R^n(M, U), U)\cong M$ and ExtSi(ExtRn(M,U),U)=0 for any i≥0 with $i\neq n$. A duality is thus induced between the category of finitely presented holonomic left R-modules and the category of finitely presented holonomic right S-modules.

A left R-module M is called strongly P-projective if Exti(M, P) = 0 for all projective left R-modules P and all i ≥ 1. In this article, we first discuss properties of strongly P-projective modules. Then we introduce and study the strongly P-projective dimensions of modules and rings. The relations between the strongly P-projective dimension and other homological dimensions are also investigated.

The main aim of this paper is to investigate rings over which all (finitely generated strongly) Gorenstein projective modules are projective.We consider this propriety under change of rings, and give various examples of rings with and without this propriety.

FI-injective and FI-flat modules

We introduce and investigate the notion of $\gc$-projective modules over (possibly non-noetherian) commutative rings, where $C$ is a semidualizing module. This extends Holm and J{\o}rgensen's notion of $C$-Gorenstein projective modules to the non-noetherian setting and generalizes projective and Gorenstein projective modules within this setting. We then study the resulting modules of finite $\gc$-projective dimension, showing in particular that they admit $\gc$-projective approximations, a generalization of the maximal Cohen-Macaulay approximations of Auslander and Buchweitz. Over a local (noetherian) ring, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a $G_C$-approximation to be minimal.

Let R be a ring and n be a positive integer. R is called left n-coherent, if every n-presented left R-module is $$(n+1)$$ -presented. A left R-module M is called (n, 0)-injective if Ext $$^1_R(V, M)=0$$ for every n-presented module V, a right R-module F is called (n, 0)-flat if Tor $$^R_1(F, V)=0$$ for every n-presented module V, a left R-module M is called (n, 0)-projective if $$\mathrm{Ext}^1_R(M, N)=0$$ for any (n, 0)-injective module N, and a right R-module M is called (n, 0)-cotorsion if $$\mathrm{Ext}^1_R(F, M)=0$$ for any (n, 0)-flat module F. We give some characterizations and properties of (n, 0)-projective modules and (n, 0)-cotorsion modules. n-coherent rings, n-hereditary rings and n-regular rings are characterized by (n, 0)-projective modules, (n, 0)-cotorsion modules, (n, 0)-injective modules and (n, 0)-flat modules.

We show that an iteration of the procedure used to define the Gorenstein projective modules over a commutative ring R yields exactly the Gorenstein projective modules. Specifically, given an exact sequence of Gorenstein projective R‐modules such that the complexes HomR(G, H) and HomR(H, G) are exact for each Gorenstein projective R‐module H, the module Coker is Gorenstein projective. The proof of this result hinges upon our analysis of Gorenstein subcategories of abelian categories.

Weak tilting modules

In this paper, we prove that any pure submodule of a strict Mittag-Leffler module is a locally split submodule. As applications, we discuss some relations between locally split monomorphisms and locally split epimorphisms and give a partial answer to the open problem whether Gorenstein projective modules are Ding projective.
