On sets of elements in Rickart rings induced by partial orders
Let A be a Rickart *-ring and let ≤*,≤♯,≤⊕, and ≤⊕ denote the star, the sharp, the core, and the dual core partial orders in A, respectively. The sets of all b∈A such that a≤b, along with the sets of all b∈A such that b≤a, are characterized, where a∈A is given and where ≤ is one of the partial orders: ≤*, or ≤♯, or ≤⊕, or ≤⊕. Such sets of elements that are above or below a given element under the minus partial order ≤− in a Rickart ring A are also studied. Some recent results of Cvetković-Ilić et al. on partial orders in B(H), the algebra of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space H, are thus generalized.

Minus partial order in regular modules
The minus partial order is already known for sets of matrices over a field and bounded linear operators on arbitrary Hilbert spaces. Recently, this partial order has been studied on Rickart rings. In this paper, we extend the concept of the minus relation to the module theoretic setting and prove that this relation is a partial order when the module is regular. Moreover, various characterizations of the minus partial order in regular modules are presented and some well-known results are also generalized.

Let H+n(R) be the cone of all positive semidefinite n x n real matrices. Two of the best known partial orders that were mostly studied on subsets of square complex matrices are the L?wner and the minus partial orders. Motivated by applications in statistics we study these partial orders on H+n(R). We describe the form of all surjective maps on H+ n (R), n > 1, that preserve the L?wner partial order in both directions. We present an equivalent definition of the minus partial order on H+n(R) and also characterize all surjective, additive maps on H+ n (R), n ? 3, that preserve the minus partial order in both directions.

On the basis of Löwner partial order and core partial order, we introduce a new partial order: LC partial order. By applying matrix decomposition, core inverse, core partial order, and Löwner partial order, we give some characteristics of LC partial order, study the relationship between LC partial order and Löwner partial order under constraint conditions, and illustrate its differences with some classical partial orders, such as minus, CL, and GL partial orders.

On the star and minus orders on Hilbert space operators
We study the star and minus partial orders on the set B(H,K) of all bounded operators acting from a Hilbert space H to a Hilbert space K. We extend and strengthen some results from matrix case to the case of general operators, which may not possess generalized inverses. By means of some norm inequalities, we give necessary and sufficient condition under which two operators have orthogonal ranges, and thus, we give a characterization of the star partial order. When A = PB for some projection P, we prove the equivalence of A<∗B with f(AA∗)A<∗f(BB∗)B for a wide class of continuous functions f. Also, we prove that A<∗B if and only if A<−B and A2<−B2 when A is a weak EP operator and B is a self-adjoint operator. Finally, we consider the Moore–Penrose invertibility and the ordinary invertibility of a linear combination of operators when they are related with one of these two orders.

Abstract. The minus partial order linear algebraic methods have proven to be useful in the study of complex matrices. This paper extends study of minus partial orders to general rings. It is shown that the condition a < b, where < is the minus partial order, defines two triples of orthogonal idempotents, and thus, a decomposition of a ring into a direct sum of abelian groups. Hence, several well-known results concerning minus partial order on real and complex matrices are generalized. Analogous decompositions for rectangular matrices over a ring and for Banach space operators are obtained. The equivalent conditions for the invariance of ab(1)a under the choices of b(1) are also obtained. An original inspiration for this work came from the study of minus partial order on complex matrices and from linear algebra methods.

Let $S=End(M)$ be the ring of endomorphisms of a right $R$-module M. In this paper we define the minus parital order for the endomorphism ring of modules. Also, we extend study of minus partial order to the endomorphism ring of a (Rickart) module. Thus several well-known results concerning minus partial order are generalized.

Rings with involution as partially ordered abelian groups
Let (S, *) be a ring with involution *. The involution is positive definite if, for all finite subsets {r,-} of S, £ w * = 0 implies all the r{ are zero. Then the set of self-adjoint elements of S, denoted S, possesses a natural partial ordering, with positive cone consisting of elements of the form Z l w * ; with this ordering, S is a directed partially ordered abelian group. Let Sb denote the set of bounded elements, that is, the set of elements s such that ss* is less than an integral multiple of 1 in this ordering. Then Sb is a *-subalgebra of S whenever S is an algebra over the rationals. We will be studying the objects Sb9 S , and (Sb) , from the point of view of their ordered structures. For instance, suppose S is a field, and * is the identity. Then S is formally real, and Sb must be Prufer domain, all of whose residue fields are themselves formally real (and in fact, are embeddable in the reals). Viewing Sb as a partially ordered abelian group with order unit 1 (indeed, Sb is the convex subgroup of S generated by 1), Sb has the Riesz decomposition property, and its normalized extremal states are precisely the ring homomorphisms into the reals. There is a natural mapping from the collection of total orderings of S to the set of extremal states of Sb9 and this in turn maps to Spec Sb (the prime ideal space of Sb); when S is even a real algebra much more can be said. If either S is a field and * is not the identity, or S is a quaternionic division algebra with the natural involution, essentially the same properties hold, with the appropriate modifications. A useful tool here is an involutory version of the Artin Schreier Theorem, about the existence of sufficiently many total orderings finer than the natural ordering. Studies are made of several specific bounded subrings. For instance, if S is the rational function field in one variable over the reals, then Sb is a Dedekind domain with class group of order 2, with spectrum the unit circle (in the point-open topology), and all of its maximal ideals are not principal. Expanding the scope of S somewhat, we next allow S to be a division

Lattice properties of partial orders for complex matrices via orthogonal projectors
This paper deals with left star, star, and core partial orders for complex matrices. For each partial order, we present an order-isomorphism between the down-set of a fixed matrix B and a certain set (depending on the partial order) of orthogonal projectors whose matrix sizes can be considerably smaller than that of the matrix B. We study the lattice structure and we give properties of the down-sets. We prove that the down-set of B ordered by the core partial order and by the star partial order are sublattices of the down-set ordered by the left star partial order. We analize the existence of supremum and infimum of two given matrices and we give characterizations of these operations (whenever they exist). Some of the results given in the paper are already known in the literature but we present a different proof based on the previously established order-isomorphism.

In the present paper, we study strongly minimal partial orderings in the signature containing only the symbol of binary relation of partial order. We use for partial orderings such characteristics as the height of a structure that is the supremum of lengths of ordered chains, and the width of a structure that is the supremum of lengths of antichains, where an antichain is a set of pairwise incomparable elements. We also differ trivial width and non-trivial width. Recently, B.Sh. Kulpeshov, In.I. Pavlyuk and S.V. Sudoplatov described strongly minimal partial orderings having a finite non-trivial width. Here we study strongly minimal partial orderings having an infinite non-trivial width. The main result of the paper is a criterion for strong minimality of an infinite partial ordering of height two having an infinite non-trivial width.
Read moreGroups of Divisibility: A Unifying Concept for Integral Domains and Partially Ordered Groups
The theory of divisibility and factorization in an integral domain is essentially the study of a partially ordered abelian group. This is because if D is an integral domain with identity, K a field containing D, and K* the set of nonzero elements of K, then the divisibility relation (a divides b for a,b∈K* if and only if b/a∈D) determines a partial order on K* modulo the units of D. To be sure, the divisibility relation is reflexive and transitive on K* and so determines a preordering compatible with the group structure of K* (if a divides b, then ac divides bc for all c∈K*).
