Sparse matrix decompositions and graph characterizations
In this paper the concept of positive definite bilinear matrix moment functional, acting on the space of all the matrix valued continuous functions defined on a bounded interval [a,b] is introduced. The best approximation matrix problem with respect to such a functional is solved in terms of matrix Fourier series. Basic properties of matrix Fourier series such as the Riemann—Lebesgue, matrix property and the bessel—parseval matrix inequality are proved. The concept of total set with respect to a positive definite matrix functional is introduced, and the totallity of an orthonormal sequence of matrix polynomials with respect to the functional is established.

K-means on Positive Definite Matrices, and an Application to Clustering in Radar Image Sequences
We state theoretical properties for k-means clustering of Symmetric Positive Definite (SPD) matrices, in a non-Euclidean space, that provides a natural and favourable representation of these data. We then provide a novel application for this method, to time-series clustering of pixels in a sequence of Synthetic Aperture Radar images, via their finite-lag autocovariance matrices.

The use of regional covariance descriptors to generate feature data represented by Symmetric Positive Definite (SPD) matrices from images or videos has become increasingly common in machine learning. However, SPD data itself does not constitute a vector space, and dictionary learning involves a large number of linear operations, so dictionary learning cannot be performed directly on SPD data. For this reason, a more common method is to map the SPD data to the Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Space (RKHS). The so-called kernel learning is to find the most suitable RKHS for specific tasks. RKHS can be uniquely generated by a kernel function. Therefore, RKHS learning can also be considered as kernel learning. In this article, there are two main contributions. The first contribution is to propose a framework which based on Kernel Learning and Riemannian Metric (KLRM). Usually the learnable kernel function framework is to learn some parameters in the kernel function. The second contribution is dictionary learning by applying KLRM to SPD data. The SPD data is transformed into the RKHS generated by KLRM, and RKHS after training provides the most suitable working space for dictionary learning. Under the proposed framework, we design a positive definite kernel function, which is defined by the Log-Euclidean metric. This function can be transformed into a corresponding Riemannian kernel. The experimental results provided in this paper is compared with other state-of-the-art algorithms for SPD data dictionary learning and show that the proposed algorithm achieves better results.

Behaviour of mixed finite element and multipoint point flux approximations for flow with discontinuous coefficients
We study the numerical behaviour and the relationships between some numerical methods derived from the Mixed Finite Element (MFE) formulation and from the Control Volume formulation using the Multi-Point Flux Approximation (MPFA) of Aavatsmark et al. (1996). All methods are locally mass conservative and are well suited to solve the flow problem for both steady state (elliptic case) an transient (parabolic case) on a general irregular grid with anisotropic and heterogeneous discontinuous coefficients. Hybridization of the standard MFE method allows to obtain a symmetric positive definite system which is not, in general, an M-matrix. Moreover, the mixed hybrid finite element method uses more unknowns (one per edge or face) than the finite volume formulation (one per element). On the other hand, for a general element grid, the MPFA method does not give a symmetric matrix of coefficients and monotonicity issues are known to arise for high aspect ratios combined with skewed of computational grids. In this work, we propose two variants of the MFE method: (i) the lumped-MFE method, based on the equivalence between MHFE method and the P1-nonconforming Galerkin method for the Laplace equation and (ii) the multipoint-MFE method based on Multipoint finite volume discretization using the framework of the modified mixed finite element space. We discuss connections between the different approaches and perform numerical experiments for both steady state and transient cases to compare (number of unknowns, matrix properties, condition number) and study the numerical behaviour of these methods (unphysical oscillations, CPU time).

Birkhoff-James orthogonality in the trace norm, with applications to quantum resource theories
Numerous results are presented that characterize when a complex Hermitian matrix is Birkhoff-James orthogonal, in the trace norm, to a (Hermitian) positive semidefinite matrix or set of positive semidefinite matrices. For example, a simple-to-test criterion that determines which Hermitian matrices are Birkhoff-James orthogonal, in the trace norm, to the set of all positive semidefinite diagonal matrices is developed. Applications in the theory of quantum resources are explored. For example, the quantum states that have modified trace distance of coherence equal to $1$ (the maximal possible value) are characterized, and a connection between the modified trace distance of $2$-entanglement and the NPPT bound entanglement problem is established.

Given an undirected graph G=(V,E) with node set V=[1,n], a subset $S\subseteq V$, and a rational vector $a\in {\rm\bf Q}^{S\cup E}$, the positive semidefinite matrix completion problem consists of determining whether there exists a real symmetric n × n positive semidefinite matrix X=(xij) satisfying xii=ai ($i\in S$) and xij=aij ($ij\in E$). Similarly, the Euclidean distance matrix completion problem asks for the existence of a Euclidean distance matrix completing a partially defined given matrix. It is not known whether these problems belong to NP. We show here that they can be solved in polynomial time when restricted to the graphs having a fixed minimum fill-in, the minimum fill-in of graph G being the minimum number of edges needed to be added to G in order to obtain a chordal graph. A simple combinatorial algorithm permits us to construct a completion in polynomial time in the chordal case. We also show that the completion problem is polynomially solvable for a class of graphs including wheels of fixed length (assuming all diagonal entries are specified). The running time of our algorithms is polynomially bounded in terms of n and the bitlength of the input a. We also observe that the matrix completion problem can be solved in polynomial time in the real number model for the class of graphs containing no homeomorph K4.

Conservative perturbations of positive definite Hamiltonian matrices
We consider Hamiltonian matrices obtained by means of symmetric and positive definite matrices and analyse some perturbations that maintain the eigenvalues on the imaginary axis of the complex plane. To obtain this result we prove for such matrices the existence of a diagonal form or, alternatively by means of symplectic transformations, the existence of thesimplestcanonical form. Applications related to a pair of problems in the context of linear algebra and differential equations are also reported. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Read moreFast algorithm for optimal weight computation in linear array pattern synthesis having null constraints
A fast algorithm is given for computing the optimal weight vector in antenna array pattern synthesis having a set of null constraints. The algorithm requires only a UDUT decomposition of an m + 1 × m + 1 real positive definite matrix and the computation of the first row of the inverse of a triangular matrix of the same dimension, where m is the number of null constraints.
Read moreMultiple homoclinic orbits for a class of second order perturbed Hamiltonian systems
We look for homoclinic orbits of the system of differential equations $- dot(q) + L(t)q = V_q(t, q) + g(t)$ where $V : R \times R^N (\to) R$ is superquadratic and even in $q$ and $L(t)$ is a a symmetric, positive definite matrix. If $g(t) != 0$, in spite of the loss of symmetry a suitable perturbative method allows one to state the existence of infinitely many solutions of the problem.
Read moreThe -positive semidefinite matrices A such that are nonsingular
This work focuses on the class of L -positive semidefinite matrices A such that A A ( L ) ( † ) − A ( L ) ( † ) A is nonsingular, where A ( L ) ( † ) is the generalized Bott-Duffin inverse of A with respect to a subspace L . We give some equivalent characterizations for the nonsingularity of A A ( L ) ( † ) − A ( L ) ( † ) A , A A ( L ) ( † ) + A ( L ) ( † ) A and I n − A ( A ( L ) ( † ) ) 2 A mainly by rank equalities and subspace operations, among which relations are pointed out. Meanwhile we show the inverses of their general versions in a decomposition form. In addition, the continuity of this class of matrices is discussed based on the continuity of the generalized Bott–Duffin inverse.
