In this paper, a robust face recognition algorithm is proposed, which is based on the elastic graph matching (EGM) and discriminative feature analysis algorithm. We introduce a cost function for the EGM taking account of variations in face pose and facial expressions, and propose its optimization procedure. Our proposed cost function uses a set of Gabor-wavelet-based features, called robust jet, which are robust against the variations. The robust jet is defined in terms of discrete Fourier transform coefficients of Gabor coefficients. To cope with the difference between face poses of test face and reference faces, 2 x 2 warping matrix is incorporated in the proposed cost function. For the discriminative feature analysis, linear projection discriminant analysis and kernel-based projection discriminant analysis are introduced. These methods are motivated to solve the small-size problem of training samples. The basic idea of PDA is that a class is represented by a subspace spanned by some training samples of the class instead of using sample mean vector, that the distance from a pattern to a class is defined by using the error vector between the pattern and its projection to the subspace representing the class, and that an optimum feature selection rule is developed using the distance concept in a similar way as in the conventional linear discriminant analysis. In order to evaluate the performance of our face recognition algorithm, we carried out some experiments using the well-known FERET face database, and compared the performance with recently developed approaches. We observed that our algorithm outperformed the compared approaches.

A major and demanding issue in the telecommunications industry is the prediction of churn customers. Churn describes the customer who is attrite from one Telecom service provider to competitors searching for better services offers. Companies from the Telco sector frequently have customer relationship management offices it is the main objective in how to win back defecting clients because preserve long-term customers can be much more beneficial to a company than gain newly recruited customers. Researchers and practitioners are paying great attention and investing more in developing a robust customer churn prediction model, especially in the telecommunication business by proposed numerous machine learning approaches. Many approaches of Classification are established, but the most effective in recent times is a tree-based method. The main contribution of this research is to predict churners/non-churners in the Telecom sector based on project pursuit Random Forest (PPForest) that uses discriminant feature analysis as a novelty extension of the conventional Random Forest approach for learning oblique Project Pursuit tree (PPtree). The proposed methodology leverages the advantage of two discriminant analysis methods to calculate the project index used in the construction of PPtree. The first method used Support Vector Machines (SVM) as a classifier in the construction of PPForest to differentiate between churners and non-churners customers. The second method is a Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) to achieve linear splitting of variables node during oblique PPtree construction to produce individual classifiers that are robust and more diverse than classical Random Forest. It found that the proposed methods enjoy the best performance measurements e.g. Accuracy, hit rate, ROC curve, Gini coefficient, Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic and lift coefficient, H-measure, AUC. Moreover, PPForest based on direct applied of LDA on the raw data delivers an effective evaluator for the customer churn prediction model.

Research was conducted to investigate the use of optical, air-born acoustic and plasma charge signals for detecting defects in laser welds. Full penetration, partial penetration and gapped-full penetration butt-joint welds were made in 1.4mm cold-rolled steel sheet. A 3 kW CO2 laser was used to produce these three classes of welds while laser power, travel speed and joint fitup were varied to produce the various conditions. Visible light, audible sound and electrical charge near the plume were measured simultaneously in real-time using a silicon photodiode, a condensor microphone and a plasma charge sensing gas nozzle, respectively. The spectra of the sensor signals were analyzed by a statistical technique known as Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA). Stepwise LDA was used to identify the most important frequency bands and canonical discriminant analysis was employed to develop discriminant functions. Reliability analysis of the training samples revealed that this LDA method classified laser welds with reliability ranging from 85% to 96%, depending on the welds selected for inclusion in the training set. When the linear discriminant function was validated using new (untrained) samples, it distinguished the three different classes of laser welds with approximately 87% accuracy. Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and Multilinear Principal Component Analysis (MPCA) are leading subspace methods for achieving dimension reduction based on supervised learning. Both LDA and MPCA use class labels of data samples to calculate subspaces onto which these samples are projected. Furthermore, both methods have been successfully applied to face recognition. Although LDA and MPCA share common goals and methodologies, in previous research they have been applied separately and independently. In this paper, we propose an extension of LDA to multiple factor frameworks. Our proposed method, Multifactor Discriminant Analysis, aims to obtain multilinear projections that maximize the between-class scatter while minimizing the withinclass scatter, which is the same core fundamental objective of LDA. Moreover, Multifactor Discriminant Analysis (MDA), like MPCA, uses multifactor analysis and calculates subject parameters that represent the characteristics of subjects and are invariant to other changes, such as viewpoints or lighting conditions. In this way, our proposed MDA combines the best virtues of both LDA and MPCA for face recognition.

A computer vision system for automatic recognition and classification of five varieties of plant leaves under controlled laboratory imaging conditions, comprising: 1–Cydonia oblonga (quince), 2–Eucalyptus camaldulensis dehn (river red gum), 3–Malus pumila (apple), 4–Pistacia atlantica (mt. Atlas mastic tree) and 5–Prunus armeniaca (apricot), is proposed. 516 tree leaves images were taken and 285 features computed from each object including shape features, color features, texture features based on the gray level co-occurrence matrix, texture descriptors based on histogram and moment invariants. Seven discriminant features were selected and input for classification purposes using three classifiers: hybrid artificial neural network–ant bee colony (ANN–ABC), hybrid artificial neural network–biogeography based optimization (ANN–BBO) and Fisher linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Mean correct classification rates (CCR), resulted in 94.04%, 89.23%, and 93.99%, for hybrid ANN–ABC; hybrid ANN–BBO; and LDA classifiers, respectively. Best classifier mean area under curve (AUC), mean sensitivity, and mean specificity, were computed for the five tree varieties under study, resulting in: 1–Cydonia oblonga (quince) 0.991 (ANN–ABC), 95.89% (ANN–ABC), 95.91% (ANN–ABC); 2–Eucalyptus camaldulensis dehn (river red gum) 1.00 (LDA), 100% (LDA), 100% (LDA); 3–Malus pumila (apple) 0.996 (LDA), 96.63% (LDA), 94.99% (LDA); 4–Pistacia atlantica (mt. Atlas mastic tree) 0.979 (LDA), 91.71% (LDA), 82.57% (LDA); and 5–Prunus armeniaca (apricot) 0.994 (LDA), 88.67% (LDA), 94.65% (LDA), respectively.

Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is a classical method for discriminative dimensionality reduction. The original LDA may degrade in its performance for non-Gaussian data, and may be unable to extract sufficient features to satisfactorily explain the data when the number of classes is small. Two prominent extensions to address these problems are subclass discriminant analysis (SDA) and mixture subclass discriminant analysis (MSDA). They divide every class into subclasses and re-define the within-class and between-class scatter matrices on the basis of subclass. In this paper we study the issue of how to obtain subclasses more effectively in order to achieve higher class separation. We observe that there is significant overlap between models of the subclasses, which we hypothesise is undesirable. In order to reduce their overlap we propose an extension of LDA, separability oriented subclass discriminant analysis (SSDA), which employs hierarchical clustering to divide a class into subclasses using a separability oriented criterion, before applying LDA optimisation using re-defined scatter matrices. Extensive experiments have shown that SSDA has better performance than LDA, SDA and MSDA in most cases. Additional experiments have further shown that SSDA can project data into LDA space that has higher class separation than LDA, SDA and MSDA in most cases.

Boosting is a general method for improving the accuracy of any given learning algorithm. In this paper, we have proposed the boosting method for face recognition (FR) that improves the linear discriminant analysis (LDA)-based technique. The improvement is achieved by incorporating the regularized LDA (R-LDA) technique into the boosting framework. R-LDA is based on a new regularized Fisher’s discriminant criterion, which is particularly robust against the small sample size problem compared to the traditional one used in LDA. The AdaBoost technique is utilized within this framework to generalize a set of simple FR subproblems and their corresponding LDA solutions and combines the results from the multiple, relatively weak, LDA solutions to form a strong solution. The comparative experimental result on FERET database demonstrates that the proposed boosting method achieves more accurate results over the individual algorithms.

Pattern recognition of electromyography (EMG) signals can potentially improve the performance of myoelectric control for upper limb prostheses with respect to current clinical approaches based on direct control. However, the choice of features for classification is challenging and impacts long-term performance. Here, we propose the use of EMG raw signals as direct inputs to deep networks with intrinsic feature extraction capabilities recorded over multiple days. Seven able-bodied subjects performed six active motions (plus rest), and EMG signals were recorded for 15 consecutive days with two sessions per day using the MYO armband (MYB, a wearable EMG sensor). The classification was performed by a convolutional neural network (CNN) with raw bipolar EMG samples as the inputs, and the performance was compared with linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and stacked sparse autoencoders with features (SSAE-f) and raw samples (SSAE-r) as inputs. CNN outperformed (lower classification error) both LDA and SSAE-r in the within-session, between sessions on same day, between the pair of days, and leave-out one-day evaluation (p < 0.001) analyses. However, no significant difference was found between CNN and SSAE-f. These results demonstrated that CNN significantly improved performance and increased robustness over time compared with standard LDA with associated handcrafted features. This data-driven features extraction approach may overcome the problem of the feature calibration and selection in myoelectric control.

Evidence of preclinical interactions between the gut microbiome and brain health is accumulating. Studies of animal models and specific patient populations have suggested a relationship between gut microbiomes and brain volumes, but this association is understudied in apparently healthy humans. We conducted a population-based cross-sectional study of 623 Japanese men from the Shiga Epidemiological Study on Subclinical Atherosclerosis (SESSA). We performed 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing of stool samples collected during the follow-up stage (mean [SD] age, 68.0 [8.0] years; range, 46–83 years). All participants underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging and automated voxel-based morphometry. Principal coordinate analysis, linear discriminant, and multivariable linear regression analyses were performed. In multivariable linear regression analysis, after adjusting for age and total intracranial volume, only gray matter volume showed a positive association with alpha diversity (the Shannon index richness, q-value <0.01). However, no association was found after further adjustments for body mass index, physical activity, smoking, drinking, and hypertension. The weighted UniFrac distances (beta diversity) measured using principal coordinate analysis showed that lower and higher white and gray matter volumes formed distinct clusters (q < 0.01). In linear discriminant analysis and multivariable-adjusted linear regression analysis, several genera were significantly associated with gray and white matter volumes (q < 0.01); however, Lachnospiraceae, a butyrate-producing bacterium, was consistently related to a higher white matter volume in different statistical analysis models. Egarthellaceae, Bifidobacteraceae, and Selenomonadaceae showed a positive association with greater gray matter volume. Our findings support an association between gut microbiome diversity and brain volumes in middle-aged to older Japanese men. This study provides insight into the underlying effects of the gut microbiome on human brain volume.

Principle Component Analysis(PCA) and Linear Discriminant Analysis(LDA) are known as classical techniques used in face recognition. Both 2-D PCA, 2-D LDA are based on 2-D matrices as opposed to classical PCA and LDA which are based on 1-D vectors. In current work Discriminative Component Analysis(DCA) simultaneous projection of probe image into PCA and LDA face spaces for face recognition is proposed. Also Alternate DCA is proposed. The study is conducted on AT&T database (formerly ORL database) and study reports are encouraging as that of other analysis.

Many state-of-the-art i-vector based voice biometric systems use linear discriminant analysis (LDA) as a post-processing stage to increase the computational efficiency in the back-end via dimensionality reduction, as well as annihilate the undesired (noisy) directions in the total variability subspace. The traditional approach for computing the LDA transform uses parametric representations for both intra- and inter-class scatter matrices that are based on the Gaussian distribution assumption. However, it is known that the actual distribution of i-vectors may not necessarily be Gaussian, and in particular, in the presence of noise and channel distortions. In addition, the rank of the LDA projection (i.e., the maximum number of available discriminant bases) is limited to the number of classes minus 1. Accordingly, language recognition tasks on noisy data that involve only a few language classes receive limited or no benefit from the LDA post-processing. Motivated by this observation, we present an alternative non-parametric discriminant analysis (NDA) technique that measures both the within- and between-language variation on a local basis using the nearest neighbor rule. The effectiveness of the NDA method is evaluated in the context of noisy language recognition tasks using speech material from the DARPA Robust Automatic Transcription of Speech (RATS) program. Experimental results indicate that NDA is more effective than the traditional parametric LDA for language recognition under noisy and channel degraded conditions.
