Parental role population statistic

Aims: Numerous studies indicate that stressors associated with parenthood can adversely affect parental well-being and children's psychosocial development. The aim of the study was to analyze sociodemographic differences in parental role strain in the general parental population. Methods: The study is based on a national postal survey of a random sample of 605 Icelandic mothers and fathers of children under 18. Results: Parental role strain was related to young parental age at first birth, female gender, non-married status, age of youngest child, age range of children, number of children in the household, and the parent's own chronic illness. Furthermore, chronic illness or disability of a child was markedly related to higher parental role strain, although the relationship was partly reduced with parental employment. Conclusions: Parental role strain is unevenly distributed in the parental population and varies by sociodemographic and health statuses of parents and children. Understanding and addressing parental role strain could improve parental mental health and help create a family environment that enhances the psychosocial development of children.

The aim of the study was to analyse sociodemographic differences in specific and overall parental role strains in the general population of parents of children under 18. The study is based on a subsample of 872 Icelandic parents of children under 18, derived from a national postal health survey of Icelandic adults (response rate 69%). The study found that parents age 25-54, parents with more children living at home, employed parents, and mothers, especially single mothers and mothers in lower income families, were more exposed than other parents to specific and overall strains associated with the parental role. Parental role strains were unevenly distributed in the parental population. Describing and explaining the distribution of parental role strains contributes to the wider understanding of adult population mental health.

The process of adaptation and acceptance of a child's diagnosis of cerebral palsy requires from parents to process the trauma caused by this knowledge cognitively and emotionally. Parents who manage to come to terms with their children's condition are labeled as resolved. As opposed to them, unresolved parents do not accept the reality of their children's condition and fail to overcome the crisis caused by knowledge of the child's diagnosis. Unresolved status has negative implications for the child, the parents and their relationship. Two case reports of mothers whose children have been diagnosed to have cerebral palsy are given. The first case shows a resolved mother who managed to overcome the initial shock and started to feel a sense of relief from the period when she found out the child's diagnosis. In contrast, another case shows an unresolved mother with no significant changes in thoughts and feelings from the time since she learned the child's diagnosis. She was preoccupied with anger and attempted to minimize the child's problem. Interviews on reaction to diagnosis and reaction to diagnosis classification system allow identification of mothers' resolution of their children's diagnosis of cerebral palsy. The characteristics of resolved and unresolved maternal status are discussed. Parental resolution of diagnosis is essential for the successful adaptation to raising children with disabilities, as well as meeting the requirements of the parental role. It is important to recognize parental cognitions and feelings regarding the child's condition in order to direct psychotherapeutic interventions towards vulnerable population of parents.

Introduction: Since, executive functions can be interpreted as a universal set of cognitive capacities which promote purposeful behaviors, investigating the role of executive functions of parents, especially the important role of mothers in daily parent-child interaction and finally, fostering children's resilience is an important step.As a result, the purpose of this research was to determine the mediating role of parents' reflective capacity in the relationship between mothers' working memory weakness and their children's resilience. Materials and Methods:The present study was a descriptive cross -sectional study. The statistical population of this research included 200 mothers who had children between 6 and 11 years old, and lived in Tehran in 2023.They were selected by available sampling method.Data collection tools were parental reflective functioning questionnaires, cognitive abilities and the revised version of children's resilience.Data analysis was conducted by Pearson correlation test and path analysis using SPSS v.26 software. Results:The results indicated that weakness in working memory had a direct, negative and significant relationship with the child's resilience (=-0.23,p<0.01).Also, weakness in working memory had a direct and positive impact on prementalizing (=0.30) and a direct and negative effect on certainty in recognizing mental states (=-0.23)and on interest and curiosity about mental states (=-0.20)(p<0.001).Finally, prementalizing had a significant negative effect (=-0.30), and certainty in recognizing mental states (=0.31) and curiosity and interest about mental states (=0.24) had a significant positive effect on child resilience (p<0.001). Conclusion:The results of this research supported the mediating role of the components of parental reflective functioning in the relationship between maternal working memory and the child's resilience and revealed that strengthening the components of parental reflective functioning and the mother's working memory can be a useful intervention for improving children's resilience.

The present study was conducted with the aim of examining the impact of parental role modeling and harmonization on children's critical thinking skills, within the statistical population of families with elementary school children in Tehran. This research was carried out using a survey method, and a sample of 726 families was selected through multistage cluster random sampling. Data collection was conducted in schools across 11 districts of Tehran. To measure the variables, a researcher-made questionnaire with acceptable validity and reliability was utilized. The data were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis, partial correlation coefficients, and multivariate regression with SPSS version 24. The results, based on beta coefficients, indicated that children’s critical thinking was influenced by the variable of parental role modeling with a coefficient of 0.326 and by parental harmonization with a coefficient of 0.209. Additionally, 21.2% of the variance in children's critical thinking was explained by the variables of parental role modeling and harmonization (Adj. R² = .212). The relationships among the variables were statistically significant (Sig. = .000). Accordingly, parents can significantly contribute to the development of their children's personalities as rational, open-minded individuals capable of making choices and decisions based on critical thinking, by enhancing their own personality traits and engaging in logical interactions with each other.
