PathZip: A lightweight scheme for tracing packet path in wireless sensor networks

In the last few years, interest in wireless sensor networks has increased considerably. These networks can be useful for a large number of applications, including habitat monitoring, structural health monitoring, pipeline monitoring, transportation, precision agriculture, supply chain management, and many more. Typically, a wireless sensor network consists of a large number of simple nodes which operate with exhaustible batteries, unattended. Manual replacement or recharging the batteries is not an easy or desirable task. Hence, how energy is utilized by the various hardware subsystems of individual nodes directly affects the scope and usefulness of the entire network. This paper provides a comprehensive assessment of state-of-the-art of dynamic power management (DPM) in wireless sensor networks. It investigates aspects of power dissipation in a node and analyses the strength and limitations of selective switching, dynamic frequency, and voltage scaling.

Wireless ad hoc sensor networks have the advantage of spanning a large geographical region and being able to collaboratively detect and track non-local spatio-temporal events. This paper presents a dual-space approach to event tracking and sensor resource management in sensor networks. The dual-space transformation maps a non-local phenomenon, e.g., the edge of a half-plane shadow, to a single point in the dual space, and maps locations of distributed sensor nodes to a set of lines that partitions the dual space. The detection problem becomes finding and tracking the cell that contains the point in the arrangement defined by these lines. This mechanism can be effectively used for power management of the sensor network - nodes that will not be immediately visited by an event can be turned off to save energy required for sensing, processing, and communication. The approach has been successfully demonstrated on a laboratory testbed built using the UC Berkeley motes sensors. An implemented application of detecting and tracking light shadow edges moving over a sensor field is described.

Autonomously configuring and self-healing a large-scale wireless sensor network requires a light-weight maintenance protocol that is scalable. Further, in a battery powered wireless sensor network duty-cycling a node's radio can reduce the power consumption of a device and extend the lifetime of a network. With duty-cycled nodes the power consumption of a node's radio depends on the amount of communication it must perform and by reducing the communication the power consumption can also be reduced. Multi-parent hierarchies can be used to reduce the communication cost when constructing a recursive area clustering hierarchy when compared to single-parent solutions that utilize inefficient communication methods such as flooding and information propagation via single-hop broadcasts. The multi-parent hierarchies remain scalable and provide a level of redundancy for the hierarchy.

Various communication services have been provided. They include environmental monitoring and/or control, ad-hoc communication between mobile nodes, and inter-vehicle communication in intelligent transport systems. As a means of facilitating the above advanced communication services, autonomous decentralized networks, such as wireless sensor networks (Akyildiz et al., 2002; Rajagopalan & Varshney, 2006), mobile ad-hoc networks (Perkins & Royer, 1999; Johnson et al., 2003; Clausen & Jaquet, 2003; Ogier et al., 2003), and wireless mesh networks (Yamamoto et al., 2009), have been intensively researched with great interests. Especially, a wireless sensor network, which is a key network to construct ubiquitous information environments, has great potential as a means of realizing a wide range of applications, such as natural environmental monitoring, environmental control in residential spaces or plants, object tracking, and precision agriculture (Akyildiz et al., 2002). Recently, there is growing expectation for a new network service by a wireless sensor network consisting of a lot of static sensor nodes arranged in a service area and a few mobile robots as a result of the strong desire for the development of advanced systems that can flexibly function in dynamically changing environments (Matsumoto et al., 2009). In this chapter, a large scale and dense wireless sensor network made up of many static sensor nodes with global positioning system, which is a representative network to actualize the above-mentioned sensor applications, is assumed. In a large scale and dense wireless sensor network, generally, hundreds or thousands of static sensor nodes limited resources, which are compact and inexpensive, are placed in a service area, and sensing data of each node is gathered to a sink node by inter-node wireless multi-hop communication. Each sensor node consists of a sensing function to measure the status (temperature, humidity, motion, etc.) of an observation point or object, a limited function of information processing, and a simplified wireless communication function, and it generally operates on a resource with a limited power-supply capacity such as a battery. Therefore, a data gathering scheme and/or a routing protocol capable of meeting the following requirements is mainly needed to prolong the lifetime of a large scale and dense wireless sensor network composed of hundreds or thousands of static sensor nodes limited resources. 1. Efficiency of data gathering 2. Balance of communication load among sensor nodes 3. Adaptability to network topology changes

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is a promising approach to simplify the management of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Many SDN frameworks for WSNs have been proposed, while real-world testbeds to accelerate the development of SDN-based WSN applications are still rare. In this work, we propose SDNWisebed: an SDN-empowered WSN testbed management system that enhances the WSN management functions with a stateful Software-Defined Networking solution. This testbed was designed to evaluate various types of SDN-based WSN applications and enhance their performance, such as WSN routing protocols and network applications, before deploying them in real-world infrastructures. To validate its efficiency, we conducted both functional and performance evaluation. Real-world experiment results show that the speed of integration of new SDN applications can be improved thanks to the stateful feature awareness of SDNWisebed.

Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is one of the active research topics in the field of computer network since it provides three types of basic services: sensing, processing, and disseminating. Ad-hoc and multi-hop WSNs are commonly used in many applications; therefore, maintaining stability of WSN is an essential issue in present days. However, node failures are not exceptions in WSN. Many factors may cause sensor nodes to fail, such as energy exhaustion, out of communication range, or node module damage. These damages are usual incidents in practical WSN applications. Except node module damages that we are unable to look after, we propose an energy-efficient routing algorithm to prolong the lifetime of nodes in WSN. Another feature of the proposed algorithm is that each node routes network packets independently throughout the entire WSN. It makes that algorithm to provide autonomic management of the links in WSN.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are widely deployed in many fields nowadays. However, the limited energy storage ability of sensor nodes causes great detrimental effect on the performance of the WSNs. Energy harvesting has been proved as one of the promising ways to replenish the energy constrained sensors for prolonging WSNs lifetime. Another exacerbated problem introduced by non-uniform energy distribution and nonoptimal energy management in WSNs also causes great challenge to WSNs. For realizing the efficient energy utilization and improving the performance of energy harvesting enabled WSNs, two transmission management schemes, Markov decision based packets aggregation allocation (MDPA) and partial Kalman filter with best-match aggregation (PKBPA), are proposed respectively in this paper. MDPA focuses on the node's own energy capabilities to decide the packets number for aggregation, while PKBPA decides the number of packets to be aggregated and transmitted based on the estimated energy state information of the node and its next hop. Simulation results show that the PKBPA scheme outperforms other schemes, especially when the energy is insufficient for the packets transmission.

Wireless sensor network(WSN) authentication schemes are the basic necessary security tool for protecting the communication authenticity and integrity in the network. In this paper we propose general authentication schemes from linear error-correcting codes and rational functions. There are very many different random code and function based authentication schemes with the same security functionality and cost. When these different and random code and function based authentication schemes are used for various parts of one large scale wireless sensor network, the resulted WSN authentication schemes constructed in this paper can resist the compromising of large number of sensor nodes for this large scale wireless sensor network with moderate communication and storage cost. The verification per node in our novel WSN authentication schemes is very fast. Thus WSN authentication schemes based on codes and rational functions can be used to resist the pollution and DoS attacks from the adversary.

With hardware support and software optimization, Public Key Cryptography (PKC) has been announced feasible on micro sensors recently [1][2][22][23]. A number of experiments proved that the Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) is more suitable for resource constraint motes compared with RSA [2][3]. But even ECC based protocols still cost too much energy. In this paper, we propose C4W, an identity-based public key infrastructure specially designed for wireless sensor networks (WSNs), in which all nodes can generate others' ECC public keys directly from their identities. Without certificates, no energy will be consumed for certificates communication and verification, which makes C4W especially energy efficient. C4W uses a protocol without certificates to realize mutual authentication and key agreement. Compared with a simplified SSL (SSSL) protocol using an abbreviated certificate, C4W consumes lower than 35% energy, and the communication consumption of C4W is only 28.5% of that consumed by SSSL. Furthermore, the energy analysis of C4W illuminates that the expensive public key computational cost is almost neglectable compared with the heavy communication consumption in a large-scale WSNs, which gives the asymmetric key management in WSNs a bright future.

Wireless sensor networks have garnered considerable attention recently. Networks typically have many sensor nodes, and are used in commercial, medical, scientific, and military applications for sensing and monitoring the physical world. Many researchers have attempted to improve wireless sensor network management efficiency. A Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)-based sensor network management system was developed that is a convenient and effective way for managers to monitor and control sensor network operations. This paper proposes a novel WSNManagement system that can show the connections stated of relationships among sensor nodes and can be used for monitoring, collecting, and analyzing information obtained by wireless sensor networks. The proposed network management system uses collected information for system configuration. The function of performance analysis facilitates convenient management of sensors. Experimental results show that the proposed method enhances the alive rate of an overall sensor node system, reduces the packet lost rate by roughly 5%, and reduces delay time by roughly 0.2 seconds. Performance analysis demonstrates that the proposed system is effective for wireless sensor network management.

Characteristics of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) make their management different from traditional networks. With service oriented concepts having been implemented in WSNs, this paper investigates service oriented management of heterogeneous WSNs. A services oriented management architecture for heterogeneous WSNs is proposed in order to make better use of network management business processes from the point of view of WSNs managers/users. Within the proposed management architecture, entities and common management services are specified with heterogeneity of WSNs hidden by loose-coupling service oriented Web Services technologies. Functional architectures of entities and key issues for implementing the prototype system are presented.

Since there is no fixed infrastructure or centralized management in wireless sensor networks, a connected dominating set (CDS) has been proposed to serve as a virtual backbone. The CDS of a graph representing a network has a significant impact on the efficient design of routing protocols in wireless sensor networks. This problem has been studied extensively, in which all nodes have the same transmission ranges and the size of the dominating sets are considered. In this paper, by the method of constructing the steiner tree, we model a network as an undirected graph and present the CDS which has smaller size. The performance ratio of these algorithms is constant. Furthermore, we show a size relationship between a maximal independent set and a CDS as well as a bound of the maximum number of independent neighbors of a node. The theoretical analysis and simulation results are also presented to verify our approaches.

Mobile wireless sensor networks play a vital role in today’s real world applications in which the sensor nodes are related to the mobile network. Mobile wireless sensor networks are much added in resourceful than stagnant wireless sensor networks as the sensor nodes there in can be organize in any situation and deal with rapid topology changes. Secure power management is effective during an inside attack or other malicious attacks. It then efficiently turns the wireless sensor network nodes into inactive mode when they are unused and stir them up when required. To providing robust secure power management in wireless sensor networks. We proposed Efficient Secure Management Technique (ESMT) in mobile wireless sensor network. This scheme sends data efficiently across the network using routing strategy along with efficient security management.

In this paper we extend our previously designed trust model in wireless sensor networks to include both; communication trust and data trust. Trust management in wireless sensor networks is predominantly based on routing messages; whether the communication has happened or not (successful and unsuccessful transactions). The uniqueness of sensing data in wireless sensor networks introduces new challenges in calculating trust between nodes (data trust). If the overall trust is based on just the communication trust, it might mislead the network, that is; untrustworthy nodes in terms of sensed data can be classified as trusted nodes due to their communication capabilities. Hence we need to develop new trust models to address the issue of the actual sensed data. Here we are comparing the two trust models and proving that one model by itself is not enough to decide on the trustworthiness of a node, so new techniques are required to combine both data trust and communication trust.

Developments in last decade in the field of electronics & communication, computer science and information technology field have resulted in the new technology paradigm, Wireless Sensor Networks. WSN is becoming increasingly popular due to their wide range of applications. For successful adaption of WSN in real field applications, there are certain issues which need to be addressed particularly the issue of energy consumption associated with sensor nodes. This limitation combined with node deployment has added many challenges to design and management of wireless sensor networks. The WSNs are involved in applications such as remote environment monitoring, event tracking in areas where providing electrical energy is very difficult. Moreover, the battery fed sensor nodes have very small energy associated with them, so preserving that energy and maximizing the usage of that energy is most critical issue in WSNs. Here, we present a survey of various energy optimization and lifetime enhancement techniques in wireless sensor networks and makes the reader aware about various energy saving techniques in WSN. They are analyzed from various points of view: Device hardware, Transmission, MAC protocols and Routing protocols.
