Peppermint hard candy packaging design with Kansei engineering

<p><strong>A common problem often encountered in sanitary napkin packaging is inadequate product protection. Failure to open or reseal the packaging and the use of materials that cannot be reused are complaints from 97% of consumers regarding sanitary napkin products currently on the market. This research aims to analyze packaging design elements according to consumer preferences. In this research, the Kansei Engineering and Rough Set methods were used. Kansei Engineering has the advantage of being able to translate consumer emotions into design elements. The design element analysis process is carried out using the Rough Set method. The research results obtained consumer emotions in the form of 19 Kansei words and 29 packaging samples as design references. Analysis of sanitary napkin packaging design elements obtained recommendations in the form of cardboard material, folding cardboard packaging type, no additional features, box body, opening type with flap, medium size, feminine design, script typography, and image elements in the form of pictures and illustrations. This research succeeded in proving Kansei Engineering's ability to produce packaging designs according to consumer preferences through quantitative data analysis<em>.</em></strong></p><p><strong><em>Keywords</em></strong> - <em>Model Kano, Rough Set, Design Element, Packaging</em></p>

The purpose of this study was to produce a sago rice packaging design that suits consumer preferences using the Kansei Engineering method. This study employed a survey method and quantitative analysis. The Kansei words selected in this study included communicative, transparent, informative, practical, safe, brightly colored, attractive, innovative, size-appropriate, unique, strong, creative, distinctive, patterned, and protective of the product (15 words in total). The design elements and sub-elements identified from 10 samples of analog rice packaging were packaging materials (aluminum foil and plastic), labels (digital printing and stickers), packaging forms (standing pouches, side gusset pouches, and sachets), and colors (many colors (>3 colors), few colors (2-3 colors), and plain). The packaging design desired by consumers, based on conjoint analysis, reflected the Kansei words practical, attractive, innovative, unique, creative, distinctive, and patterned. Consumers preferred packaging made of aluminum foil, labeled with digital printing, in the form of a standing pouch, and featuring many colors (>3 colors).

The role of government health websites as a source of referrals and credible health information is very important, especially now that everything is digital. People use the internet and make health websites as the first step in finding health information, government policies related to health, and public health services. So it is very important to consider the user aspect in designing the appearance of an appropriate health website. This study utilizes the Kansei Engineering KEPack type 1 in analyzing various emotional factors related to the e-government website interface in the health sector. So that it can be found that the psychological emotional factors of users are important and become the main recommendations in the design of the website interface. We are focuses on user preferences for the e-government site interface of the Karawang District Health Office with the Kansei Engineering Type I approach. The Kansei Engineering study was conducted to analyze various emotional factors related to the user interface by comparing 5 specimens of e-Government sites in the health sector. A total of 20 kansei words were identified which were then processed using the multivariate statistical method Cronbach's Alpha (CA), Coefficient Correlation Analysis (CCA), Factor Analysis (FA). The result is that 4 kansei words have a high influence and successfully present a matrix of design element recommendations with 7 main elements and 45 sub-criteria for specific design elements.

Android-based devices have become devices for every student in communication activities and learning media, therefore the Introduction to Linguistics course requires learning media, so the alternative is to use an Android-based application. The purpose of this study was to analyze the emotional factor in designing the interface for Android-based Introductory Linguistics teaching materials with the Kansei Engineering approach; make recommendations for the interface design of Android-based Introduction to Linguistics teaching materials. The method used is Kansei Engineering Type I (KEPack). The application of Kansei Engineering in the design of the Android-based Learning Application interface produces interface design elements in designing Android-based Learning Applications consisting of 7 major parts, namely Page Body, Header, Top Menu, Left Menu, Main Menu, Right Menu and Footer. To detect users of research android-based learning applications using 18 Kansei Word Specimens consisting of 4 applications, participants were taken with the slovin approach which collected 190 students from 360 students, the process of analyzing the elements needed in designing the application interface design with the Kansei Engineering approach, using the Kansei Engineering method. multivariate calculations. The methods are Coefficient Correlation Analysis (CCA), Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Factor Analysis (FA) and Partial Least Square (PLS). It is very important to predict the reaction of customers to future products. Sample pictures and line sketches are commonly used for discovering consumers’ demands. However, these two agents are difficult to express the real product form clearly and comprehensively, which may affect the accuracy of consumer affection prediction. In this paper, a method based on Kansei engineering via virtual reality (VR) has been proposed to construct a mapping relationship between form elements and consumer affection from four dimensions of the overall, unit, interrelation, and detail (OUID), so as to provide references for product form design. The correlation between product form elements and the perceptual image was studied with multiple linear regression analysis and partial correlation analysis. The different effects of VR, sketches, and pictures on user affection prediction were compared in this paper as well. A hairdryer has been employed as an example to illustrate the proposed method. The results show that compared with sketch and picture, VR based-prediction model is more accurate and reliable in predicting users’ emotional preferences. In addition to the unit form, the overall features, interrelation, and details are also the key factors affecting consumer preference. Highlight Based on Kansei Engineering, this paper investigated the correlation between the form elements of the product and the user's affection via VR. The proposed approach can help designers to quickly and accurately capture the user's perceptual image and transform it into design elements. The different effects of VR, sketches, and pictures on customer affection prediction were compared. A decomposition model is proposed to analyse the product form elements on four dimensions (overall features, unit form, interrelation, and details).

Purpose This study aims to apply Kansei Engineering (KE) to modernize Batik Semarangan motifs, aligning them with the preferences of younger consumers. Design/methodology/approach A systematic approach is used to modernize Batik Semarangan through KE. Kansei words were collected and validated using the content validity index method. Exploratory factor analysis categorized these words into three emotional factors, guiding motif development. Quantification theory type I (QTTI) was applied to quantify emotional connections between design elements such as motifs, colors and patterns. Findings Three new designs incorporate contemporary esthetics, such as minimalist patterns and bold color contrasts, while maintaining Batik Semarangan’s traditional symbolism. Emotional factors like elegance, modernity and cultural pride were effectively captured, resonating with younger consumers. Research limitations/implications The study focuses on Batik Semarangan and its application within a specific cultural context. Findings may not be applicable to other batik styles or demographics outside the study’s geographical region. Practical implications This research provides a data-driven approach for designers and manufacturers to create batik designs that align with younger consumers’ preferences. Social implications By modernizing Batik Semarangan, this research promotes cultural pride and ensures the preservation of Indonesian heritage while adapting it to contemporary tastes, making it relevant in the globalized fashion market. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is original in applying KE to Batik Semarangan, offering a consumer-driven approach to modernizing motifs while preserving cultural authenticity. The integration of QTTI quantifies emotional responses to design elements, adding unique value to the field.

One of the most important contributors to foreign exchange is tourism, and one type of accommodation that can help the tourism industry is hotels. Currently, the website is one of the elements that helps visitors obtain information about the hotel and make reservations for available rooms. One technique for attracting hotel customers is to create an eye-catching website. The process of translating human emotions and feelings into a design–in this case, the design of a website interface–is known as Kansei Engineering. The main goal of this study is to select the most critical emotional factors for redesigning the website of the Ocean View Tulamben Bali Hotel. This study contributes to the knowledge in the field of website interface design based on emotional factors by applying the multivariate method and Kansei Engineering. The related users’ critical emotions were translated into Kansei words in this study. Seven Kansei words related to the website interface were used and six hotel websites were used as samples. The 33 respondents were employees of the Ocean View Tulamben Bali Hotel. Multivariate statistical analysis, including Cronbach’s alpha, coefficient correlation analysis, factor analysis, and partial least squares, were used to examine the respondents’ questionnaire responses. Recommendations for redesigning the hotel website interface were derived from the average of all questionnaires. The results showed that the Kansei word “futuristic” was the most important user emotion. China’s online retail sales growth rate of men’s plain color shirts had declined because they could not meet customers’ aesthetic value needs. This study aims to determine consumers’ aesthetic value preferences and corresponding design elements. Based on Kansei Engineering, a semantic differential scale questionnaire was conducted with seven crucial Kansei words and styling specimens. Then, researchers validated these Kansei words using principal component analysis. More significantly, this study used partial least squares to construct a relationship between crucial Kansei words and styling design elements. Furthermore, researchers obtained the matching colors corresponding to Kansei words in the color image scale. Thus, Kansei words, styling design elements, and corresponding colors made up the recommendation guidelines. Lastly, questionnaires and interviews were used to verify the effectiveness of these guidelines. These recommendation guidelines were the most important results of this study. Besides, this study also found that the recent popular oversized fit appeared in distinctive and casual styles, but the audience is relatively small. Purchasers preferred a one-button square cuff, and the separate left-side pocket is more popular than both-side pockets. Purchasers liked the wide-spread collar compared with the classical pointed collar because it appeared most frequently in recommendation guidelines. Classic fit was still the mainstream, but its popularity would decline. In addition, modern fit and slim fit would become increasingly popular. The SMEs industry in Indonesia keep growing significantly in the last 10 years, driven by digital channels such as e-commerce. One of Indonesia's popular food products is onion chili. However, the packaging design of the product is generic and may not be attractive or meet consumer expectations. This study aims to design the product packaging for onion chili using Kansei Engineering (KE) to increase its value. To aim for the objectives, this research was conducted in two stages, the first stage was to assess customer satisfaction and collected Kansei words that related to packaged onion chili. The satisfaction level was measured based on color, packaging durability, and packaging style. In the second stage, a questionnaire consisting of a packaged design checklist and Kansei words was developed. Then, the Kansei words were reduced using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and obtained 3 main factors which are convenience, durability, and hygiene & attractiveness. The result was then followed by determining the elements of the new design based on Partial Least Square Regression (PLSR) and followed by design requirement analysis. Three proposed bottle designs were developed based on those 3 main factors as an alternative design for SMEs who sell this kind of product

This research aimed to understand and determine customers’ preferences for the first ride-hailing application named Gojek. Product attributes were used as independent variables, and categorized into three indicators: product quality, product features, and product design attributes. Preferences were determined by measuring utilities and importance values using the conjoint analysis method. The population of this research comprised Gojek application users in Batam, with 160 respondents determined by using a rule of thumb specified for conjoint analysis. Data were collected through an online questionnaire and processed using SPSS 22. The research results indicated that among the three indicators of product attributes, product features dominated the respondents' preferences, as evidenced by having the highest importance value, with the GoPay payment feature level being the most preferred. In second place was product quality, with data security and privacy as the preferred attributes at that level. Product design was consequently ranked last with the lowest importance value, and ease of use was the most preferred attribute.

PurposeBelief in Mazu has a crucial cultural status in Taiwan and the coastal area of Fujian, China. The design and manufacture of apparel and accessories to be placed on statues of the deity are also considered a sacred and critical part of the religion’s cultural and artistic inheritance. The crown hat of Mazu is one of the most essential elements of the deity’s apparel. The paper aims to discuss these issues.Design/methodology/approachThis study explored the styles of Mazu crown hats using Kansei engineering (KE). People generally use adjectives words to provide aesthetic evaluations. Fuzzy theory is suitable for processing linguistic problems that include vagueness, thereby providing a reasonable method of quantifying such aesthetic evaluations. Therefore, this study first established a fuzzy positioning model (FPM) of word evaluations for analysis. Factor analysis was used to obtain representative image adjectives that represented Mazu’s image. Fuzzy analysis methods were then employed to rank the various image adjectives through evaluation words and to determine the differences between adjectives. Finally, on the basis of image analysis results and expert suggestions, the crown hat was redesigned and its suitability verified.FindingsFour results were obtained. First, four image adjectives appropriate for representing Mazu’s image were identified, of which “noble and kind” is the most suitable. Second, fuzzy analysis was found to successfully rank style images. Third, the crown hat style and design characteristics suitable for Mazu were acquired. Fourth, the verification demonstrated that the redesign effectively enhanced the perceived image of the crown hat design.Originality/valueThis study employed KE to improve the design of a Mazu crown hat. The proposed FPM can aid the development of cultural and creative design.

This paper illustrates the design methods of machine tools based on the theory of Kansei Engineering. General attitudes towards the machine tools are measured by the Semantic Differential Method, the mapping between the design elements and the cognitive image is established through the Orthogonal Experiments, and the specific element style that significantly results in a certain image as well as the order of contribution degree from design elements towards images are obtained. Finally, the effectiveness of this method is verified by designing practice of a pipe processing machine.

In order to improve the attractiveness of social robot serving health interventions in public workspace, we propose a product design method with the combination of Style-generative adversarial network (StyleGAN) model and particle swarm optimisation-support vector regression (PSO-SVR). This paper aims to explore the modelling generation method of social robots for health intervention based on artificial intelligence generated content (AIGC) and a mapping model between the shape characteristics and users’ visual perception based on Kansei Engineering (KE). Firstly, to address the defects of typical KE over-reliance on existing samples, we introduce the StyleGAN model in AIGC to learn and train existing robots’ shape samples and generate new robots’ shape sample images. Secondly, the morphological deconstruction method is used to deconstruct the shape features of the new robot sample. Factor analysis (FA) is also used to reduce dimension and cluster emotional words and establish a Likert scale between the shape features of robots and users’ emotional vocabulary. Finally, particle swarm optimisation-support vector regression (PSO-SVR) is used to establish a mapping model between the shape features of social robots and the emotional images of users, thus obtaining the most attractive shape combination scheme. The research results showed that the StyleGAN model in AIGC can be used to assist industrial designers in creative expression and provide rich sample sources for KE; and the PSO-SVR of machine learning can be used to build a mapping model among users’ visual feelings, emotional images and shape features. In the end, we designed an attractive social robot for public health intervention.

Oolong tea is one of the tea commodities that has a distinctive taste and high global market potential. However, in Indonesia, the appeal of Oolong tea is still low compared to black tea and green tea. This may be due to the lack of packaging that can represent the character of the product and the emotional preferences of consumers. This study aims to develop a packaging design concept for Oolong tea based on Kansei Engineering by translating aspects of functionality, usability, and pleasure. A total of 30 respondents were involved in this study to conduct interviews and surveys using video stimuli as well as digital and physical packaging. The results of this exploration were analyzed using the TF-IDF method, Hierarchical Agglomerative Clustering, and K-means Algorithm. The TF-IDF analysis yielded 25 Kansei words. These were then grouped using the HAC method into four main concepts: Exclusive, Modern, Practical, and Reusable. Based on the K-means Algorithm, the Exclusive concept had the highest silhouette value. This indicates consumer preference for packaging with a luxurious and elegant feel. Based on these analysis results, it is evident that the Kansei Engineering approach, supported by statistical methods, can generate more emotional and relevant packaging concepts that can serve as references in the domestic market.

Taking the videophone for example, this study developed a process and method of product form perception based on customer preferences. This study proposed the a process of product form perception evaluation scale which includes 17 appraisal words and 10 representative pictures by questionnaires, multidimensional scaling, and cluster analysis method. Then it established the relationship model between consumer preference and image words using multiple regression analysis and the relationship model between consumer preference and appearance design variables using conjoint analysis. These two models will support videophone product form designers during the design process and can also indicate other products designers with methods of meeting consumers' emotional demands.
