Performance Analysis and Comparison Among Different Task Scheduling Algorithms in Cloud Computing

Cloud computing is becoming very common in recent years and is growing rapidly due to its attractive benefits and features such as resource pooling, accessibility, availability, scalability, reliability, cost saving, security, flexibility, on-demand services, pay-per-use services, use from anywhere, quality of service, resilience, etc. With this rapid growth of cloud computing, there may exist too many users that require services or need to execute their tasks simultaneously by resources provided by service providers. To get these services with the best performance, and minimum cost, response time, makespan, effective use of resources, etc. an intelligent and efficient task scheduling technique is required and considered as one of the main and essential issues in the cloud computing environment. It is necessary for allocating tasks to the proper cloud resources and optimizing the overall system performance. To this end, researchers put huge efforts to develop several classes of scheduling algorithms to be suitable for the various computing environments and to satisfy the needs of the various types of individuals and organizations. This research article provides a classification of proposed scheduling strategies and developed algorithms in cloud computing environment along with the evaluation of their performance. A comparison of the performance of these algorithms with existing ones is also given. Additionally, the future research work in the reviewed articles (if available) is also pointed out. This research work includes a review of 88 task scheduling algorithms in cloud computing environment distributed over the seven scheduling classes suggested in this study. Each article deals with a novel scheduling technique and the performance improvement it introduces compared with previously existing task scheduling algorithms. Cloud computing has spread fast because of its high performance distributed computing. It offers services and access to shared resources to internet users through service providers. Efficient performance of task scheduling in clouds is one of the most important research issues which needs to be focused on. Various task scheduling algorithms for cloud based on metaheuristic techniques have been examined and showed high performance in reasonable time such as scheduling algorithms based on Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), Genetic Algorithm (GA), and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). In this paper, we propose a new task-scheduling algorithm based on Lion Optimization Algorithm (LOA), for cloud computing. LOA is a nature-inspired population-based algorithm for obtaining global optimization over a search space. It was proposed by Maziar Yazdani and Fariborz Jolai in 2015. It is a metaheuristic algorithm inspired by the special lifestyle of lions and their cooperative characteristics. The proposed task scheduling algorithm is compared with scheduling algorithms based on Genetic Algorithm and Particle Swarm Optimization. The results demonstrate the high performance of the proposed algorithm, when compared with the other algorithms.

With the changes in the era of science and technology, the emergence of 5G technology makes a communication speed leap, and the delay is also getting shorter and shorter. At present, the computing power of computing equipment is also steadily improving. As one of its key technologies, mobile edge computing (MEC) is becoming more and more important. Here, we introduce MEC task scheduling and device collaboration algorithms based on deep learning. Aiming at the multi-task joint optimization scheduling strategy microtearing mode to minimize the total service cost of multiple tasks, we establish a theoretical optimization model of multi-task joint scheduling and use the model to design a multi-task cloud collaborative optimization scheduling algorithm based on Livepeer Token rules. We propose a deep-learning device collaboration algorithm based on alternating direction multiplier. The sub differential algorithm and the improved conjugate gradient method are designed to solve the sub problem respectively. This paper simulates the proposed deep-learning task scheduling algorithm and device collaboration algorithm. The simulation results show that, in the task scheduling algorithm, the proposed algorithm reduces the cost of completing the task, but in the total task time, this algorithm has a certain gap compared with other algorithms. In the equipment collaboration algorithm, with the increase of the n value, the algorithm converges in a certain iteration increment; in terms of algorithm convergence, the algorithm needs 142 iterations at most to achieve convergence, and the fastest speed only needs 17 iterations. In the experiment based on real data sets, the proposed algorithm is also better than the other two algorithms. From these results, we can see that the proposed algorithm has good convergence, stability, and scalability, and it has excellent performance in task scheduling and device collaboration of MEC.

Cloud computing provides computing resources like software and hardware as a service by the network for several users. Task scheduling is one of the main problems to attain cost-effective execution. The main purpose of task scheduling is to allocate tasks to resources so that it can optimize one or more criteria. Since the problem of task scheduling is one of the Nondeterministic Polynomial-time (NP)-hard problems, meta-heuristic algorithms have been widely employed for solving task scheduling problems. One of the new bio-inspired meta-algorithms is Seagull Optimization Algorithm (SOA). In this paper, we proposed an energy-aware and cost-efficient SOA-based Task Scheduling (SOATS) algorithm. The aims of proposed algorithm to make a trade-off between five objectives (i.e., energy consumption, makespan, cost, waiting time, and load balancing) using a fewer number of iterations. The experiment results by comparing with several meta-heuristic algorithms (i.e., Genetic Algorithm (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), and Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA)) prove that the proposed technique performs better in solving task scheduling problem. Moreover, we compared the proposed algorithm with well-known scheduling methods: Cost-based Job Scheduling (CJS), Moth Search Algorithm based Differential Evolution (MSDE), and Fuzzy-GA (FUGE). In the heavily loaded environment, the SOATS algorithm improved energy consumption and cost saving by 10 and 25%, respectively.

Cloud computing and big data: Technologies and applications

Priority in task scheduling and resource allocation for cloud computing has attracted significant attention from the research community. However, traditional scheduling algorithms often lack the ability to differentiate between tasks with varying levels of importance. This limitation presents a challenge when cloud servers must handle diverse tasks with distinct priority classes and strict quality of service requirements. To address these challenges in cloud computing environments, particularly within the infrastructure of service models, we propose a novel, self-adaptive, multiclass priority algorithm with VM clustering for resource allocation. This algorithm implements a four-tiered prioritization system to optimize key objectives, including makespan and energy consumption, while simultaneously optimizing resource utilization, degree of imbalance, and waiting time. Additionally, we propose a resource prioritization and load-balancing model based on the clustering technique. The proposed work was validated through multiple simulations using the CloudSim simulator, comparing its performance against well-known task scheduling algorithms. The simulation results and analysis demonstrate that the proposed algorithm effectively optimizes makespan and energy consumption. Specifically, our work achieved percentage improvements ranging from +0.97% to +26.80% in makespan and +3.68% to +49.49% in energy consumption while also improving other performance metrics, including throughput, resource utilization, and load balancing. This novel model demonstrably enhances task scheduling and resource allocation efficiency, particularly in complex scenarios with tight deadlines and multiclass priorities.

Objectives: Current state-of-the-art task scheduling algorithms were mainly focused on deadline, load and energy factors in centralized cloud context. So, the proposed research objective focuses on dynamic and decentralized context. Methods/Statistical Analysis: Multi-objective task scheduling has become an important criterion for the dynamic and decentralized nature of cloud environment. Moreover, existing research works assumes that the resource load, energy and task execution time are known due its homogeneous nature. In order to improve the cloud consumer’s satisfaction, a novel Locality-Load-Prediction Aware Multi-objective Task Scheduling (LLPAMTS) algorithm is proposed to eventually distribute the tasks according to dynamic nature of cloud virtual machines. Findings: Proposed LLPAMTS algorithm will effectively schedule the tasks in an optimized manner by VM Scheduler component. This scheduling algorithm exploits the various monitoring parameters like locality, load and prediction parameters. It outperforms the existing deadline, load and energy aware scheduling algorithms in terms of task transfer time, task waiting time, task execution time, and task completion time. Applications/Improvements: The proposed LLPAMTS algorithm provides an average of 5 to 10% less task completion time compared to the existing deadline, load and energy aware scheduling algorithms. Task scheduling is a well-known NP-complete problem. It is one of the research areas in parallel computing. Task scheduling consists of an application program and a set of processors for allocating the various tasks. An application program is represented using a directed acyclic graph(DAG) and a set of processors that are homogenous and fully connected. In this paper, we study different task duplication-based (TDB) scheduling algorithms and their priority attributes and time complexity. Also, we will discuss different types of performance metrics in task scheduling algorithms. These performance metrics help to analyze different task scheduling algorithms.

This paper proposes to solve the task scheduling problem in cloud computing by using a load balance aware genetic algorithm LAGA with Min-min and Max-min methods. Task scheduling problems are of great importance in cloud computing, and become especially challenging when taking load balance into account. Our proposed LAGA algorithm has several advantages when solving this kind of problems. Firstly, by introducing the time load balance TLB model to help establish the fitness function with makespan, the algorithm benefits from the ability to find the solution that performs best on load balance among a set of solutions with the same makespan. More importantly, the interaction between makespan and TLB helps the algorithm to minimize makespan in the same time. Secondly, Min-min and Max-min methods are used to produce promising individuals at the beginning of evolution, leading to noticeable improvement of evolution efficiency. We evaluated LAGA on several task scheduling problems and compared with a Min-min, Max-min improved version of genetic algorithm MMGA, which does not use the TLB strategy. The results show that LAGA can obtain very competitive results with good load balancing properties, and outperform MMGA in both makespan and TLB objectives.

In Cloud Computing (CC) environment, load balancing refers to the process of optimizing resources of virtual machines. Load balancing in the CC environment is one of the analytical approaches utilized to ensure indistinguishable workload distribution and effective utilization of resources. This is because only by ensuring effective balance of dynamic workload results in higher user satisfaction and optimal allocation of resource, therefore improve cloud application performance. Moreover, a paramount objective of load balancing is task scheduling because surges in the number of clients utilizing cloud lead to inappropriate job scheduling. Hence, issues encircling task scheduling has to be addressed. In this work a method called, Ford Fulkerson and Newey West Regression-based Dynamic Load Balancing (FF-NWRDLB) in CC environment is proposed. The FF-NWRDLB method is split into two sections, namely, task scheduling and dynamic load balancing. First, Ford Fulkerson-based Task Scheduling is applied to the cloud user requested tasks obtained from Personal Cloud Dataset. Here, employing Ford Fulkerson function based on the flow of tasks, energy-efficient task scheduling is ensured. The execution of asymmetrical scientific applications can be smoothly influenced by an unbalanced workload distribution between computing resources. In this context load balancing signifies as one of the most significant solution to enhance utilization of resources. However, selecting the best accomplishing load balancing technique is not an insignificant piece of work. For example, selecting a load balancing model does not work in circumstances with dynamic behavior. In this context, a machine learning technique called, Newey West Regression-based dynamic load balancer is designed to balance the load in a dynamic manner at run time, therefore ensuring accurate data communication. The FF-NWRDLB method has been compared to recent algorithms that use the markov optimization and the prediction scheme to achieve load balancing. Our experimental results show that our proposed FF-NWRDLB method outperforms other state of the art schemes in terms of energy consumption, throughput, delay, bandwidth and task scheduling efficiency in CC environment.

The flexibility of cloud computing to provide a dynamic and adaptable infrastructure in the context of information technology and service quality has made it one of the most challenging issues in the computer industry. Task scheduling is a major challenge in cloud computing. Scheduling tasks so that they may be processed by the most effective cloud network resources has been identified as a critical challenge for maximizing cloud computing’s performance. Due to the complexity of the issue and the size of the search space, random search techniques are often used to find a solution. Several algorithms have been offered as possible solutions to this issue. In this study, we employ a combination of the genetic algorithm (GA) and the gravitational emulation local search (GELS) algorithm to overcome the task scheduling issue in cloud computing. GA and the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms are compared to the suggested algorithm to demonstrate its efficacy. The suggested algorithm outperforms the GA and PSO, as shown by the experiments.

Cloud computing proposals a novel service to the users to permitting for consume the distant resources due to some faults faced in smart devices. This causes to the emergence of the newest computing model known as mobile cloud computing. It supports to the user that the mobile devices not require to execute the application in user device as a replacement of some jobs will be execute in distant cloud/cloudlet is named as offloading jobs which is the nearby to the device. At the similar time job scheduling is more critical commonly at both the mobile devices and the mobile cloud. To solving the task scheduling problem, we propose an EBCO-TS algorithm for priority based task scheduling with load balancing model. The proposed EBCO-TS consume the power only 85% compared to the existing methods and it shows better load balancing when the number of request increases in the cloudlet.

Improvement of tasks scheduling algorithm based on load balancing candidate method under cloud computing environment

SAAS parallel task scheduling based on cloud service flow load algorithm

Task scheduling is a difficult non-deterministic polynomial problem. Optimization of the scheduling algorithm is the key to improve the efficiency of cloud computing. The traditional meta-heuristic algorithm has slow convergence rate and is easy to fall into local optimal value. This paper proposes a new scheduling method based on a coral reefs algorithm. Firstly, the task scheduling model is formally described. The objective function is proposed to calculate load balancing rate, resource utilization and load balancing stability. Then the representation method of coral reef and the coding scheme of polyps are designed. Matrix random mapping method is applied to improve the variation effect of polyps. Finally, Ant Colony Optimization(ACO), the Genetic Algorithm(GA) andRound Robin(RR) algorithms are compared in terms of completion time, convergence effect and resource load. The simulation results show that the coral reef algorithm has reduced the completion time by 6.4%, 25.1%, 51.3%, and increased resource utilization by 10.0%, 15.2% and 51.3% when it is compared with the other three algorithms. It shows that the coral reef algorithm is suitable for task scheduling in the cloud environment.
