Performance Analysis of Offloading in NOMA-HetNets using Imperfect CSI

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is considered as a multiple access technique for supporting massive number of devices with high spectral efficiency. Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is an efficient solution for fully autonomous and sustainable communication networks. In this paper, application of SWIPT in networks employing cooperative NOMA (CNOMA) is investigated with imperfect channel state information (CSI). Performance of the CNOMA network with SWIPT is investigated in a multi-tier downlink scenario with macro-base stations (MBSs) and femto-base stations (FBSs). The distribution of MBSs and FBSs follow Poisson point process model. Unlike solution in the existing literature, instead of using only the superimposed signal for energy harvesting (EH), in this work, the cooperating node/user employs EH using interference from the adjacent base stations. Expressions for outage probability and throughput are derived at the user pair (comprising a cell-center user and a cell-edge user) served using NOMA. Comparison of the proposed EH system with the existing solutions is highlighted. Monte Carlo simulations are carried out to validate the analytical results.

Rapid increase in number of cellular users and high demand for data has lead to the formation of multi-tier networks. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has proved to be an efficient method to cater to the paradigm shift from 4G to 5G. This paper employs NOMA in an heterogeneous cellular network consisting of a macro base station (MBS) tier underlaid with femto base station (FBS) tier and device-to-device (D2D) tier, where NOMA is employed in FBS and D2D tier only. The congestion at the MBS tier is relieved by offloading macro users (MU) to the FBS tier. The offloaded MU are further supported by the D2D tier when the FBS tier fails to find a corresponding pairing user for the incoming offloaded MU. Since, absence of pairing user means outage for offloaded MU, D2D cooperation is employed, which decreases the rate outage probability by $86.87\%$ for the MU offloaded as cell edge user (CEU) in comparison to no cooperation. Also, a three times increase in ergodic rate and four times increase in sum ergodic rate for MU offloaded as CEU is achieved using cooperation from D2D tier. Verification of the results is done using Monte Carlo simulations.

ABSTRACTFuture communications networks, including sixth‐generation (6G) and the internet of things (IoT), are expected to support higher capacity, quality of service, and user demands. However, serving a massive number of users in future networks poses the bandwidth limitation challenge. Non‐orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been proposed for the future IoT and 6G networks to address the mentioned problem by serving multiple users in one resource block. However, the practical approach for a multi‐cell network is to consider inter‐network interference and imperfect channel state information (CSI), which significantly deteriorates NOMA performance. This paper analyzes NOMA performance in terms of network outage probability, base station (BS) activity detection, and network sum rate under imperfect CSI and the presence of interference. In this regard, it proposes a method to improve the BS activity detection and network sum rate of NOMA networks, which exploits a lower computation complexity compared to similar research in the literature. The analytical and simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over conventional NOMA and orthogonal multiple access (OMA) schemes in terms of network sum rate and base station detection activity.

In this paper, a downlink single-cell non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network with uniformly deployed users is considered and an analytical framework to evaluate its performance is developed. Particularly, the performance of NOMA is studied by assuming two types of partial channel state information (CSI). For the first one, which is based on imperfect CSI , we present a simple closed-form approximation for the outage probability and the average sum rate, as well as their high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) expressions. For the second type of CSI, which is based on second order statistics (SOS) , we derive a closed-form expression for the outage probability and an approximate expression for the average sum rate for the special case two users. For the addressed scenario with the two types of partial CSI, the results demonstrate that NOMA can achieve superior performance compared to the traditional orthogonal multiple access (OMA). Moreover, SOS-based NOMA always achieves better performance than that with imperfect CSI, while it can achieve similar performance to the NOMA with perfect CSI at the low SNR region. The provided numerical results confirm that the derived expressions for the outage probability and the average sum rate match well with the Monte Carlo simulations.

The fifth generation (5G) of wireless communication accompanied by the advancement of mobile internet and the Internet of Things (IoT) will create stormy data traffic. The 5G challenges like higher spectral efficiency, massive connectivity, and low latency are addressed by the Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) in recent years. NOMA is proven to be a promising technique from its capability to accommodate a larger number of users in contrast to the conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) schemes. NOMA comprises two distinct techniques such as Power-Domain NOMA and Code-Domain NOMA. The non-orthogonal resource allocation in Power-Domain NOMA is practically realized by the Superposition Coding (SC) at the Base Station (BS) and an advanced Successive Interference Cancellation at the User Equipment (UE). In this manuscript, the basic concepts of NOMA, on comparing its channel gain with OMA are discussed first. Specifically, a comprehensive survey of various SIC techniques applied under perfect and imperfect Channel State Information (CSI) uncertainties are summarized in terms of outage probability, ergodic capacity, and system performance. In addition, the sophisticated SIC techniques, when NOMA is integrated with modern wireless communication technologies such as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO-NOMA) and Cooperative (C-NOMA) communications are investigated. Furthermore, the challenges to be solved with their corresponding opportunities and future research directions of NOMA are explored.

In this paper, we consider a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) based mixed free space optical–radio frequency (FSO-RF) system with imperfect channel state information (CSI) and evaluate the secrecy performance in terms of secrecy outage probability (SOP). Specifically, a source ( S ) first forwards an optical NOMA signal to a relay ( R ) via an FSO link, and then R performs an optical–electrical conversion and broadcasts the converted signal to users over the RF links. Both the FSO and RF links are incorporated with the NOMA technique, and the CSI imperfection in both links is considered. Assuming both users have multiple antennas, and adopting the maximal ratio combining diversity schemes, we derive the analytical and asymptotic expressions for SOP when the FSO link undergoes gamma–gamma fading with pointing error and the RF links are subject to Rayleigh fading. In addition, both decode-and-forward and amplify-and-forward protocols are taken into account and compared. Monte Carlo simulations are also used to verify the accuracy of the derived results.

SummaryIn this paper, we analyze the performance of maximum‐ratio combining (MRC) receivers for single‐input multiple‐output (SIMO) non‐orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system. We explore the aforesaid system performance in presence of impairments like imperfect channel state information (CSI) and successive interference cancellation (SIC) errors. In general, receive diversity provides diversity gain and helps to maintain quality of service (QoS), while the NOMA system achieves higher spectral efficiency compared to orthogonal multiple access (OMA). Power‐domain NOMA system transmits superimposed‐coded signal, which utilize SIC detection method at the receiving users. Here, we derive the closed‐form expression of the average bit error rate (BER) for the MRC‐based NOMA system. We also analyze the performance of the system in high signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) regime through derived asymptotic expression. Furthermore, the outage probability, diversity order, and sum rate comparison between NOMA and OMA system are also presented. Simulation results also validate the derived theoretical expressions and confirm the diversity gain achieved for the considered system.

In this paper, we explore the use of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based multiuser downlink communications, where a flying UAV serves multiple single antenna users through multiple RISs mounted on various buildings. More specifically, we consider the selection of RISs based on the outdated and imperfect channel state information (CSI) of the composite UAV-RIS-User channels at the UAV. After selection process, the UAV communicates to the user via the selected RISs and also with the direct link. Particularly, we derive an infinite series based expression for selection probability of RISs under both the outdated and imperfect CSI of composite channels based selection scheme. We also derive the statistical distribution of instantaneously received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) under outdated and imperfect CSI conditions of both the direct and composite links at the user. Next, using the derived statistics, we analyze the network’s performance in terms of the average coverage probability (ACP) and average bit error rate (ABER) over the complete UAV flight time. Moreover, we discuss the behavior of ACP and ABER for very small and very large values of UAV transmit power, respectively. It is depicted through numerical results that selecting more RISs from a group of small-sized RISs may not be as advantageous as selecting fewer RISs from a group of large-sized RISs. Moreover, we also demonstrate the effect of several system parameters such as number of RIS reflecting elements, number of selected RISs, the severity of UAV-RIS and RIS-User links, and the severity of imperfect and outdated CSI on the network’s performance. The analytical results are corroborated with Monte-Carlo simulations.

SummaryThe simultaneous wireless information and power transfer or energy harvesting (EH) can be combined in nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) as green applications towards 5G. This paper investigates a new cooperative EH‐NOMA protocol, where the intermediate relay has not equipped the fixed power source and acts as a wireless powered relay to help signal transmission to representative weak user and strong user in NOMA. However, impacts of imperfect channel estimation contribute to outage system performance evaluations. We formulate the power resource assignment paradigms as two schemes, namely, fixed power allocation and dynamic power allocation, by considering imperfect channel state information (CSI). To solve this problem, we derive the closed‐form expressions of outage probability under imperfect CSI and the power allocation constraints. The expected numerical results related to the derived expressions for the outage probability are examined that numerical and the Monte Carlo simulations are strictly matching lines.

We study whether using non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in the uplink of a mobile network can reduce the queueing delay compared to orthogonal multiple access (OMA) when the system requires communications at very low latency and high reliability. We first consider an ideal system model with perfect channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter and long codewords, where we determine the optimal decoding orders when the decoder uses successive interference cancellation (SIC) and derive closed-form expressions for the optimal rate when joint decoding is used. While joint decoding performs well even under tight delay constraints, NOMA with SIC decoding often performs worse than OMA. For low-latency systems, we must also consider the impact of finite-length channel coding, as well as rate adaptation based imperfect CSI. We derive closed-form approximations for the corresponding outage or error probabilities and find that those effects create a larger performance penalty for NOMA than for OMA. Thus, NOMA with SIC decoding may often be unsuitable for low-latency systems.

This paper investigates a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique by employing device-to-device (D2D) transmission in small-cell networks. More specifically, the D2D transmission combines the relay selection model from a group of macro base stations (MBS) with the D2D mode in in small-cell network to form a D2D-NOMA system. Such D2D transmission needs assistance from multiple MBS and the small-cell base station (SBS) using decode-and-forward (DF) techniques. In this context, full-duplex (FD) is adopted at intermediate nodes. Furthermore, there are two possible scenarios in practice including perfect channel state information (CSI) and imperfect CSI that need to be studied to examine performance degradation in such considered network. To evaluate system performance, we derive expressions of outage probability for D2D user. Our study results show that the proposed network with more MBSs selection can improve the outage performance compared to the conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) scheme. Finally, numerical results confirms the accuracy of the derived expressions.

The physical layer security (PLS) has become crucial in the fifth generation (5G) wireless technology where non-orthogonal multiple-access (NOMA) plays an essential role for sharing the spectrum among multiple users. Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-NOMA based cognitive radio network (CRN) enhances the spectral-efficiency at the cost of PLS. In this paper, a transmit-zero-forcing beamforming (ZFBF) technique with signal alignment is proposed to improve the PLS for MIMO-NOMA based CRN when perfect channel state information (CSI) is available at the base station (BS). In this study, a generalized cellular model with multi-cell is considered where each cluster is formed with a primary user (PU) and a secondary user (SU) to adopt the CRN. The locations of PU and SU are kept arbitrary within the cells. We also propose an eigen beamforming technique to improve the PLS for MIMO-NOMA based CRN when the imperfect CSI is available at the BS. For both beamforming techniques, optimum power allocation algorithms are developed for further enhancement of the PLS. Finally, a closed-form expression of the secrecy outage probability for the Nakagami-m fading channels is derived and compared with simulation results and other existing techniques.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) is an emerging technology that can improve the spectrum and energy efficiency of next-generation wireless networks. However, attaining accurate channel state information (CSI) for the cascaded RIS channel is particularly challenging. Imperfect CSI is a major bottleneck to achieving the spectral efficiency benefit of RIS-assisted networks. Rate splitting (RS), a promising multiple access technology, has been shown to be able to achieve an improved spectrum efficiency and be robust to channel uncertainties. This paper investigates the interplay between RIS and RS by considering a RIS-assisted RS beamforming problem. Active beamforming at the base station (BS) and passive beamforming at the RIS are jointly considered to maximize the minimum user rate under both the perfect CSI case and the imperfect CSI case. A block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm is developed to solve this non-convex problem. Compared with the conventional semi-definite relaxation (SDR) approach, the proposed method does not require that the covariance matrix of the common beamforming vector be rank-one. Moreover, we present theoretical results to help reveal the impact of the system parameters and explain the performance gain resulting from the integration of RIS and RS. Extensive simulation results are also provided to show that RIS-assisted RS can improve the max-min rate performance significantly compared with conventional multiple access technologies, such as non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and space division multiple access (SDMA) with/without RIS, especially in overloaded systems. With the proposed method, RS shows great potential in combating realistic CSI errors in RIS-assisted networks.

The integration of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications has recently shown great potential to improve traffic efficiency, control, and reliability of beyond 5G transportation systems. In V2X communications, it is vital to inspect imperfect channel state information (CSI) because the high mobility of vehicles leads to more channel estimation uncertainties. This paper proposes an energy-efficient power allocation scheme for the road-side unit (RSU) assisted NOMA multicasting in beyond 5G cellular V2X networks. In particular, the energy efficiency maximization problem is investigated under the outage probability of vehicles under imperfect CSI, quality of services (QoS), and power limit constraints. Since the problem is non-convex and difficult to solve directly, we first convert outage probability constraint to non-probabilistic constraint through approximation and adopt a low complexity gradient assisted binary search (GABS) method to obtain the efficient power allocation at RSUs. Then, a successive convex approximation (SCA) technique is exploited to transform the power allocation problem of vehicles associated with each RSU into a tractable concave-convex fractional programming (CCFP) problem. The optimal solution to the CCFP problem is achieved through Dinkelbach and the dual decomposition method. The global optimal power allocation through the GABS-Exhaustive scheme act as a benchmark, which has considerable computational complexity. Simulation results unveil that the proposed suboptimal scheme (GABS-Dinkelbach) can achieve near-optimal performance with very low complexity.

In this paper, we propose a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) relaying system, where a source node communicates simultaneously with multiple users via the assistance of the best amplify-and-forward (AF) relay. The best relay is selected among N relays which are capable of harvesting the energy from radio frequency (RF) signals. We analyze the performance of the proposed NOMA relaying system in the conditions of imperfect channel state information (CSI) and Rayleigh fading by deriving the exact expressions of the outage probability (OP) and the approximate expression of the ergodic capacities of each user and the whole system. We also determine the optimal energy harvesting duration which minimizes the OP. Numerical results show that, for the same parameter settings, the performance of the proposed NOMA relaying system, especially the ergodic capacity of the whole system, outperforms that of the orthogonal-multiple-access (OMA) relaying system. Monte-Carlo simulations are used to validate the correctness of the analytical results.
