How to predict social relationships — Physics-inspired approach to link prediction
Link prediction in social networks has a long history in complex network research area. The formation of links in networks has been approached by scientists from different backgrounds, ranging from physics to computer science. To predict the formation of new links, we consider measures which originate from network science and use them in the place of mass and distance within the formalism of Newton’s Gravitational Law. The attraction force calculated in this way is treated as a proxy for the likelihood of link formation. In particular, we use three different measures of vertex centrality as mass, and 13 dissimilarity measures including shortest path and inverse Katz score in place of distance, leading to over 50 combinations that we evaluate empirically. Combining these through gravitational law allows us to couple popularity with similarity, two important characteristics for link prediction in social networks. Performance of our predictors is evaluated using Area Under the Precision–Recall Curve (AUC) for seven different real-world network datasets. The experiments demonstrate that this approach tends to outperform the setting in which vertex similarity measures like Katz are used on their own. Our approach also gives us the opportunity to combine network’s global and local properties for predicting future or missing links. Our study shows that the use of the physical law which combines node importance with measures quantifying how distant the nodes are, is a promising research direction in social link prediction.

The capabilities of smart meters and the potential vulnerabilities they introduce make the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) a critical components of the Smart Grid. A virus propagating among meters and massively issuing remote disconnect commands could have catastrophic consequences. To understand and assess the risk posed by a given set of meter devices getting compromised, we introduce a novel modeling approach based on fuzzy Markov chain. Markov modeling is one of the main approaches used to analyze the reliability of critical systems. Markov models are usually analyzed using mathematical approaches or Monte-Carlo Simulation. For large and complex systems, traditional Markov models suffer from the state explosion problem and quickly become intractable. The key idea of our approach to solve this issue in the context of the smart grid is to leverage the hierarchical topology of AMI to build a high-level model where components represent Neighborhood Area Networks (NAN) instead of individual meters. The fuzzy Markov formalism enables our solution to take into account gradual component degradation. We propose a Fuzzy Markov Model (FMM) for reliability analysis of a Smart Grid. The reliability of each NAN is represented by a number in [0, 1] which denotes the state of that component in the FMM.We define the transition probabilities between states of the fuzzy Markov model based on the fuzzy time-to-failure value for each NAN. We utilize the Fuzzy Monte Carlo Simulation (FMCS) approach to calculate the fuzzy time-to-failure value of each NAN. Our proposed method enables us to assess the reliability of the entire AMI at the meter level while keeping the model manageable.

Basic properties of multi-granularity fuzzy soft rough approximations are presented and showed by some illustrative examples. In addition, new types of fuzzy soft sets such as jointly full fuzzy soft set, jointly intersection complete fuzzy soft set and jointly union complete fuzzy soft set are defined. Finally, some new multi-granularity fuzzy soft W-rough relations are given.
Read moreSimilarity-based link prediction in social networks using latent relationships between the users
Social network analysis has recently attracted lots of attention among researchers due to its wide applicability in capturing social interactions. Link prediction, related to the likelihood of having a link between two nodes of the network that are not connected, is a key problem in social network analysis. Many methods have been proposed to solve the problem. Among these methods, similarity-based methods exhibit good efficiency by considering the network structure and using as a fundamental criterion the number of common neighbours between two nodes to establish structural similarity. High structural similarity may suggest that a link between two nodes is likely to appear. However, as shown in the paper, the number of common neighbours may not be always sufficient to provide comprehensive information about structural similarity between a pair of nodes. To address this, a neighbourhood vector is first specified for each node. Then, a novel measure is proposed to determine the similarity of each pair of nodes based on the number of common neighbours and correlation between the neighbourhood vectors of the nodes Experimental results, on a range of different real-world networks, suggest that the proposed method results in higher accuracy than other state-of-the-art similarity-based methods for link prediction.

An adjustable approach to fuzzy soft set based decision making
A multi-criteria approach to decision-making using a hybrid $ \mathfrak{M} $-polar 3-spherical $ \mathcal{Q} $-fuzzy soft sets model
In this paper, we proposed a hybrid $ \mathfrak{M} $-polar 3-spherical $ \mathcal{Q} $-fuzzy soft set model by integrating $ \mathfrak{M} $-polar, 3-spherical, and $ \mathcal{Q} $-fuzzy soft sets. The model handles three-dimensional, $ \mathfrak{M} $-polar parametrized data. Fundamental operations such as union, intersection, complement, maximum, minimum, direct sum, direct product, and a weighted geometric aggregation operator were defined within the proposed $ \mathfrak{M} $-polar 3-spherical $ \mathcal{Q} $-fuzzy soft set framework. The new model enhanced flexibility and effectiveness in managing vagueness and uncertainty in complex decision-making problems. An application to artificial intelligence (AI) model selection and multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) demonstrated the advantages of the proposed framework.
Read moreLink prediction in social networks using hierarchical community detection
Social network analysis is an approach to the study of social structures. One of the important fields in social networks analyses is link prediction. Link prediction tries to reach an appropriate answer to this question: what kinds of interaction among members of a network would possible form in future, given a snapshot of the network in current time. The main purpose of this paper is to boost the performance of similarity based link prediction methods by using community information. This information is derived from the structure of the graph, based on the number of community levels that two vertices have in common, in a hierarchical representation of communities. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, four datasets are used as benchmark. The results suggest that the information of communities often increases the efficiency and accuracy of link prediction.

This paper investigates the diversified multi-attribute group decision-making problem which means that the different decision-makers have different evaluation attribute sets for all candidate alternatives. We analyze the diversified multi-attribute group decision-making problem from the perspective of granular computing models and creatively combine soft sets with multigranulation fuzzy rough sets to construct the multigranulation soft fuzzy rough set model. Subsequently, we define the optimistic upper and lower approximations and pessimistic upper and lower approximations with respect to multigranulation soft fuzzy rough set model. Meanwhile, we discuss some important mathematical conclusions and properties based on the established model. Then, we propose a novel approach to the diversified multi-attribute group decision-making problem based on multigranulation soft fuzzy rough set and TODIM method, which fully consider the reference dependence and loss aversion of decision-makers in the decision-making process. Finally, we use a numerical example of evaluation for the policy selection group decision-making problem to describe and explain the calculation principle and process and compare the results with existing related work, and our approach has great stability and rationality. And the contributions of this paper include the following two points: (1) construct the multigranulation soft fuzzy rough set model; (2) combine the established model with TODIM method to provide a novel perspective to solve the diversified multi-attribute group decision-making problem.

In 1999, Molodtsov introduced the concept of soft set theory as a general mathematical tool for dealing with uncertainty. By combining the multi-fuzzy set and soft set models, Y. Yang, X. Tan and C. Meng introduced the concept of multi-fuzzy soft sets and studied some of its operations, such as complement, “AND”, “OR”, Union and Intersection. They also gave an algorithm to analyze a decision problem using multi-fuzzy soft set. In this paper, we introduce the concept of multi-interval-valued fuzzy soft set (M-IVFSS). We also define its basic operations, namely complement, union, intersection, AND and OR. Finally, we give an application of this concept in decision-making problem.

The increasing pollution of river systems poses a significant challenge to water quality management and public health. This study was conducted to evaluate the water quality of the Gomati River in India, focusing on the impact of anthropogenic activities on pollution levels across different seasons. The primary objective was to develop a comprehensive assessment model using an effective weighted fuzzy soft expert system (WFSES) to derive a weighted water pollution score (WWP-score) for rating water pollution levels based on various water quality parameters. To achieve this, we employed a fuzzy soft set (FSS) methodology integrated with a weighted fuzzy soft set (WFSS) model to analyze water quality indices at six sampling stations along the Gomati River, the largest river in Tripura, India. Originating from the Raima and Sarma streams, the river flows westward through key regions, providing 249.39 million cubic meters of water annually, essential for drinking, agriculture, fishing, and transportation. The study utilized crisp data summaries of key water quality parameters, including pH, total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, electrical conductivity, biochemical oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen, total hardness, chloride, total alkalinity, and total coliform, across the pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon seasons from May 2022 to April 2023, guided by the distribution of waste discharge points. Fuzzy membership functions were defined for these parameters, and the root mean square (RMSQR) operation was used to combine multiple FSSs. The results revealed that the WWP-scores, a measure of water quality, ranged from 0.744 to 0.872 across the sampling stations, with Srimantapur exhibiting the highest level of pollution and Udaipur showing comparatively better quality. These scores indicate that water quality at all sites falls into the poor category, with Srimantapur experiencing the most severe contamination due to high levels of coliform bacteria and organic pollutants. The analysis highlights the impact of domestic wastewater and agricultural runoff on the river's health. This research offers a novel application of FSS and WFSS theory in environmental management, providing a robust framework for evaluating and ranking water quality across multiple parameters. The findings are valuable to the scientific community as they offer detailed insights into the pollution dynamics of the Gomati River and propose a methodological approach for assessing water quality in other river systems facing similar challenges. The study's results underscore the need for targeted pollution control measures and continuous monitoring to safeguard water resources and public health.

The research of incomplete fuzzy soft sets is of paramount importance in fuzzy soft sets, where the combination of incomplete fuzzy soft set and decision-making problem is of great significance. Incomplete information in fuzzy soft sets leads to more uncertainty and ambiguity in decision-making. The focus of this paper to propose an algorithm of fuzzy soft set based decision-making problems under incomplete information. On the basis of the weighted function, we introduce the notions of weighted incomplete soft sets and weighted incomplete fuzzy soft sets, and show an approach to weighted incomplete fuzzy soft sets for dealing with decision-making. Considering the missing weight function, the concept of incomplete weighted fuzzy soft sets is presented. Meanwhile, we apply the incomplete weighted fuzzy soft sets to solve the decision-making problem. As modal-style operators for fuzzy soft sets have a precise description of attributes possessed by objects, we apply modal-style operator for incomplete fuzzy soft set to deal with decision-making and propose a new algorithm to make it more accurate and simple.
