Preface

Mechanical and allied engineering have made significant contributions to technological advancement. Rapid development in technology can be achieved through continuous research. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET), Bangladesh successfully organized the 8th International Conference on Mechanical, Industrial and Energy Engineering (ICMIEE2024), continuing its biennial tradition, on 02–04 January 2025 in Khulna, the industrial city of Bangladesh. The main objective of ICMIEE 2024 was to create an effective platform for researchers and technical experts to share their recent ideas, innovations, and problem-solving techniques in the broad fields of Mechanical and allied Engineering. The conference provided a valuable opportunity for both researchers and industrial communities to meet, discuss, and exchange their research outcomes in the fields of Mechanical, Industrial, Energy, Leather, Textile, Mechatronics, and Chemical Engineering.

The Mechanical Engineering Cooperation Agency (BKS-TM Indonesia) has established the International Symposium on Advances and Innovation in Mechanical Engineering (ISAIME) as an annual scientific forum for academics, researchers, and practitioners in mechanical engineering. The 6 th ISAIME was convened on 9 October 2025, organized by the Mechanical Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Department, Universitas Andalas, Padang, Indonesia, with the theme “Artificial Intelligence and Sustainability in Mechanical Engineering: Smart Solution for a Greener Future.” This symposium served as a platform to present and discuss recent advances, research findings, and innovations across a wide range of topics, including mechanical application design, energy conversion, manufacturing processes, materials engineering, and mechanical engineering education. Distinguished experts delivered a total of two keynote lectures from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and the Université Laval, Canada, while 112 papers were presented and grouped into four thematic areas: mechanical application design, energy conversion, manufacturing processes, and materials engineering. These contributions reflect the growing role of mechanical engineering in advancing technological innovation, environmental sustainability, and human resource development within Industry 4.0. The Organizing Committee gratefully acknowledges the sponsorship and support of various companies and partner institutions, as well as the commitment of all speakers, authors, and participants who contributed to the success of this event. The knowledge and insights shared during the 6 th ISAIME are expected to foster academic collaboration, strengthen networks between academia and industry, and advance science and technology in mechanical engineering.

This article explains the need for the research in the field of engineering terminology, the process of teaching it in foreign languages, the comparative application of engineering terms in different languages and studying the development trends. Objective of the article is to describe the methodology of teaching mechanical engineering terminology on the basis of study research in the field of mechanical engineering as a complex of heavy equipment in industry that produces household appliances, as well as consumer electronics and products of defense importance. Methods of the investigation that enabled to: study and analyze mechanical engineering terms; develop methodology of teaching mechanical engineering terms; analyze selection and assessment criteria of case studies; analyze selection and assessment criteria of project-based teaching; organize pedagogical experiments and analyze their results. It is an integral part to investigate the sphere of machine-building and metalworking industries, the production of metal products, metal structures and the repair of machinery and equipment. Furthermore, the issues of teaching engineering terminology in order to form professional foreign language competence in technical students by means of using new pedagogical technologies are of high significance. Such as, typology of terms in the field of mechanical engineering, teaching terminology whereby case studies and projects, examples of case studies and study projects are given. It is also important to pay attention to the etymology and the sources of the formation of terms, their peculiarities and definitions in special contexts as a complex human speech and language activity. Results and discussion. The article discloses the processes of activating terminology for obtaining information, through cognitive activity. Research works in the field of mechanical engineering, the practical basis of teaching terms and its effectiveness are also analyzed. The terms, vocabulary related to the field of mechanical engineering, case studies and analysis of independent work assignments are taken into account in the organization and conducting the trainings defined in the pedagogical experiment. As a result of experimental research, it was proved by mathematical statistical methods that the efficiency was achieved by 15% in case studies and 17% in educational projects. It was found that the mean value of the scores in the experimental group was 17% higher than in the control group. Hence, the research conducted has proven to be effective. Conclusions. The difficulties that arise in the process of comparing terminological activities show not only the specificity of individual languages, but also the specific role of terms in the national language system. Comparing the terminology of the English and Uzbek languages in the field of mechanical engineering not only allows to determine the general and specific features of the terms of mechanical engineering in the two languages, but also provides an in-depth study of both terminological systems.

The article analyzes the main trends in the global market of mechanical engineering, in particular, in the branches of agricultural engineering, mechanical engineering for light industry, construction and road engineering, and energy engineering. It also addresses the structure and development trends of the mechanical engineering market by regions, changes in the business environment of the mechanical engineering industry, the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the state and development of the global mechanical engineering market, new rules and requirements for manufacturers of mechanical engineering products, and technological innovations and trends. Mechanical engineering companies today are at the epicenter of technological transformation. The mechanical engineering industry creates individual digital capabilities and intelligently combined products. Innovative processes such as related production, forecast service and innovative service models are increasingly used in mechanical engineering. The use of modern digital technologies in mechanical engineering is becoming a necessity that prevents the risks of losing relevance in the market of modern industry. Although the basic principles of mechanical engineering, such as thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and machine design, still remain in force, the latest technologies are contributing to the rapid development of composites, mechatronics and nanotechnology. These new subject areas, which are the result of modern achievements, have become a prerequisite for the development of new and promising industries, including artificial intelligence and biomechatronics. The growing demand for increased production efficiency while minimizing operating costs has led to demand for new and innovative technologies. Based on the study of the introduction of new technologies in mechanical engineering and global trends in the industry, the author substantiates the feasibility of accepting the need for globalization in mechanical engineering as a new norm, taking into account costs, tax consequences, quality and delivery in planning the existing geographical location, supply chains, strategic partnerships; reduction of the general supply cycle for better adaptation to the changing environment; optimization of existing production facilities, automation and attraction of advanced digital technologies for the establishment of work processes; implementation of advanced technologies in mechanical engineering, such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, nanoengineering, advanced data analytics, automation of robotic processes, blockchain, robotics, cloud computing augmented reality, 3D printing, drones, 5G, etc.; raising the qualification level of mechanical engineering workers.

Within the Italian academic system, the sector of Applied Mechanics (“Meccanica Applicata alle Macchine”) represents one of the engineering disciplines with the most significant historical background. It encompasses scientific, technological, and educational aspects related to the mechanics of machines, both from the perspective of their components and their operation as complex systems. The methodological approaches employed are varied: theoretical, numerical, and experimental. Regarding the educational aspects, the sector of Applied Mechanics is fundamental (characterizing) for Bachelor’s Degrees in Mechanical Engineering (L-9 class) and for Master’s Degrees in Mechanical Engineering (LM-33 class) and Automation Engineering (LM-25 class). Additionally, it is essential for the PhD Degree in Mechanical, Energy, and Management Engineering at the DIME Department of the University of Genova. The professors of the Applied Mechanics group at the University of Genova are actively engaged in research projects funded at the regional, national, European, and industrial levels. Collaborations are ongoing with Stellantis, Ansaldo Energia, Fincantieri, Leonardo, Hitachi, among others. In this context, the Applied Mechanics sector advances both innovative theoretical contributions and experimental studies aimed at practical applications and technology transfer. The research topics are highly interdisciplinary and include: - Modelling, design, prototyping, and control of innovative industrial robotic systems (two robotic lines developed in collaboration with Stellantis are currently operational in final car assembly); - Modelling, design, and prototyping of service robots for inspection, agriculture, and demining; - Modelling and analysis of micromechanical systems, including compliant mechanisms optimized through analytical and numerical approaches; - Dynamic analysis of systems characterized by vibrations, variable contacts and impacts (e.g., gear trains); - Numerical analysis techniques for mechanical and aeromechanical systems; - Definition and application of methodologies for dynamical analysis, model identification, diagnostics, and monitoring of structural integrity (a monitoring system for turbomachinery rotor blades, developed in collaboration with Ansaldo Energia, is currently in use in several plants).

It is very difficult to build a knowledge base in the mechanical engineering field. Because there is a great deal of complicated knowledge in mechanical engineering in comparison with other engineering fields. To build a large knowledge base, much research to connect Data Base System (DBS) and Knowledge Base System (KBS) systematically has been conducted. DBS is suitable for storing much knowledge but is not suitable for the representation of knowledge. Therefore, we believe it is possible in the mechanical engineering field to realize DBS characters in KBS by using an extended deamon function and extended system slot. If this system is realized, KBS will be suitable for managing and representing knowledge, and it will be easy to build a knowledge base in the mechanical engineering field. This paper describes the method of building a large knowledge base in mechanical engineering using an extended daemon function and an extended system slot, and "the realization of such a knowledge base."

The 2023 5th International Conference on Mechanical Automation and Materials Engineering (MAME 2023) was successfully held from 10th to 11th of June, 2023 in Hohhot, China. This conference provides a forum for scholars, researchers, postgraduate students, and practitioners in the fields of mechanical engineering, automation, control technology, materials engineering, and manufacturing engineering to share ideas, designs, and experiments. With the continuous progress of science and technology, the mechanical field is also constantly upgrading from traditional mechanical engineering to the mechatronics engineering and artificial intelligence (AI) is one of them. AI deals with a computer program that possesses own decision-making capability to solve a problem of interest with imitates the intelligent behavior of expertise which finally turns into higher productivity with better quality output. From the inception, various developments have been done on AI system which nowadays widely implemented in the mechanical and/or manufacturing industries with broaden area of application such as pattern recognition, automation, computer vision, virtual reality, diagnosis, image processing, nonlinear control, robotics, automated reasoning, data mining and process control systems. In this study, review attempt has been made for AI technologies used in various mechanical fields such as thermal, manufacturing, design, quality control and various connected fields of mechanical engineering. The study shows the blend mixed of AI technologies like deep convolutional neural network (DCNN), convolutional neural network (CNN), artificial neural network (ANN), fuzzy logic and many more to control the process parameters, process planning, machining, quality control and optimization in the mechanical era for smooth development of product or system. With the implementation of AI in mechanical engineering applications, the error, rejection of components can be minimized or eliminated and system optimization can be achieved effectively turn in economical better quality products.

The information about fixed assets is crucial for users to understand the operations of commercial organizations, as these assets play a vital role in their activities. The required information about fixed assets is incomplete in organizations’ financial statements. Commercial companies in the Russian mechanical engineering industry, in particular, rely heavily on fixed assets, making up over half of all property-related fixed assets. The study’s objective is to research information about fixed assets in non-financial reports of mechanical engineering organizations. The methodological base includes the theory of accounting and making accounting for financial and non-financial reporting in digitalization. The research focuses on the theoretical framework and methods involved in disclosing information about fixed assets in non-financial reports. The paper provides a comparative analysis of annual reports of organizations in the mechanical engineering industry: their structure, composition and content, classification of fixed assets. The authors proposed a grouping of indicators for evaluating fixed asset efficiency and compiled a list of the most relevant. This research contributes both theoretically and practically by presenting a recommended template for non-financial reporting on intangible assets specifically tailored to organizations in the mechanical engineering field. This will empower interested users to make effective choices in managing fixed assets. The study’s results are useful for mechanical engineering firms that prioritize transparently sharing non-financial information with interested audiences. This research offers valuable theoretical frameworks and practical recommendations for both academics and professionals working on the presentation of financial and non-financial information about fixed assets.

The engineering design is a very comprehensive term and required a number of different disciplines work together. There are many examples of engineering design studies and design of mechanisms is one of them. The design of mechanisms is one of the focused areas by mechanical engineering field and it includes kinematic synthesis, kinematic analysis, kinetics, dynamics, force and optimization of the mechanisms. The mechanisms can be complex; hence, additional help is needed in solution process. At that point, artificial intelligence (AI) of computer science is a really helpful for the mechanical engineers. Artificial intelligence field was found in 1956 and it is applicable to significant parts of the mechanism design. However, mechanical engineers cannot really apply artificial intelligence principles to mechanism design and as a result, design of mechanisms via AI became an interdisciplinary engineering studies between mechanical engineering and computer engineering. In this chapter of the book, mechanism design with artificial intelligence is focused and some sample applications are shown.

<p>This study examines the English language needs of mechanical engineers in Vietnam. A high demand for proficiency in English is increasing in ASEAN countries, including Vietnam. Vietnam in general and the important field of mechanical engineering, in particular, attracts many foreign investors and multinational organisations and this creates plurilingual and pluricultural workplaces where English is used as a lingua franca. Drawing on sociolinguistic theory, this pragmatic mixed method needs analysis study examines the English language communication needs of Vietnamese mechanical engineers at four workplaces in Vietnam. It investigates the kinds of real-world English skills required by Vietnamese mechanical engineers to function effectively in the workplace, the social factors that affect the use of English and the effects of breakdowns or other issues in communication in English. It draws on needs analysis models which have evolved from English for Specific Purposes, including those devised by Munby (1978) and more recently by The Common European Framework (CEF) Professional Profiles to establish key communicative events. To answer the study’s pragmatic questions about language use for practical purposes in the lingua franca, plurilingual and pluricultural workplace it also borrows from the theoretically eclectic model of the Wellington Workplace Project, a model grounded in the first language context (L1), and other more sociological studies of the relationship of language and power in international workplaces. The study employed questionnaire, semi-structured interview and observation for data collection. Questionnaires were completed by 22 managers of mechanical engineers and 71 professional mechanical engineers. Based on the initial questionnaire analysis, 12 participants from the two groups took part in the follow-up semi-structured interviews. Observations in four worksites provided rich data about the real-world use of English. The findings indicated a high frequency of English language use and the range of real-world English required by Vietnamese mechanical engineers for a range of communicative events including ordering spare parts, interpreting technical drawing and bidding for contracts. Mechanical engineers needed plurilingual and pluricultural competence to negotiate a range of accent, intonation and idiom in the lingua franca and plurilingual context. Minimal use of functional occupational language was sometimes sufficient for communication for the purpose of ‘getting things done’, but not always. Communication issues had financial consequences for the company, sometimes disastrous ones. Looking at the findings through the lens of arising communication issues helped to reveal some of the underlying power relationships in the workplace and some negative impacts on workplace solidarity. These findings demonstrate the urgency of the need for increased English language skills for mechanical engineers in Vietnam and for the wider economy of Vietnam. English was found to function as a source of ‘expert power’ and in a wider implication this revealed a hidden or ‘shadow’ power structure within the workplace affected by English language proficiency. People were empowered when they possessed a good level of English, which could help them save not only their own face but also the face of the company. More positively adaptive communicative strategies helped both mechanical engineers and their managers avoid communication issues. Adapting language for the purpose of ‘getting things done’ in turn interacted with low and high solidarity relationships. There was arguably an acceptance of a level of rudeness or abruptness in these workplace contexts. A high tolerance for the need to negotiate meaning in what could be described as not only a lingua franca but also a ‘poor English’ workplace context was sometimes observed. This tolerance sometimes but not always extended to the mobility of plurilingual repertoires such as code-switching, and some code-switching into Vietnamese was also observed on the part of long-term foreign managers. Humour also emerged as a dimension of high solidarity longer-term workplace relationships between Vietnamese mechanical engineers and foreign managers, even when all parties had limited English. The study argues that understanding why mechanical engineers needed specific types of English and the effect of the social dimensions of this language could help lessen issues in communication. The consequences of miscommunication should be addressed in the English-language training process. Students should be strategically prepared to meet the the high communication demands of the lingua franca and plurilingual workplace which requires both English for technical communication and English for social communication.</p>
