Preface

The Annual Conference and International Conference of the Chinese Association of Micro-NanoTechnology is a comprehensive, cross-disciplinary, high-level academic conference that has been held annually since 1994 and has become an important academic event in the field of micro- and nanotechnology [...].

This paper attempts to highlight quantitatively the growth and development of Indian research in the field of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in terms of publication output as per Science Citation Index (1982-2008). The whole database contains 296072 records on the subject and among them USA topped the list with 84561 (28.56 per cent) followed by, China with 43393 (14.66 per cent) publications, Japan with 32431 (10.95 per cent) publications, Germany with 28065 (9.48 per cent) publications, France with 18141 (6.13 per cent) publications, and England with 13850 (4.68 per cent) publications. During 1982-2008, a total of 8326 (2.81 per cent) papers were published by the Indian scientists in the field. The yearly average number of documents published was 308.37. The highest numbers of publications (1890) were published in 2008. The premier Indian institutes engaged in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology research were: Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangaluru with 723 publications followed by IIT Kharagpur with 606 publications; National Chemical Laboratories (NCL), Pune with 589 publications; Indian Association for the Cultivation of science (IACS), Kolkata with 563 publications; and BARC, Mumbai with 434 publications. Major portion of the publications (96.36 per cent) were written in collaboration with more than one authors. India had collaboration with 67 other countries in the field. C.N.R. Rao, M. Sastry and S. Chaudhuri were the three leading researchers in the field. Researchers from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore had most number of collaborative publications. When collaboration among institutes situated in different Indian cities was taken into consideration, Bangaluru and Kolkata were found to have the highest number of collaborative publications. Karnataka and West Bengal, the parent states of these cities were the states with the most collaborative publications in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology research. USA, Germany, and Japan had more number of collaborative publications with India. The most preferred journals for publishing the articles by the scientists were: Journal of Applied Physics (293), Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (285), Applied Physics Letters (243), Materials Letters (232), Physical Review B (232), Nanotechnology (194), and Langmuir (182). The highly occurred keywords in SCI records were: Nanoparticles (1244); Particles (756); Films (589); Growth (513); Nanocrystals (501); Thin-Films (484); Nanostructures (427); Optical-Properties (410); Nanocomposites (401); etc. DOI: 10.14429/djlit.30.6

The University of Tokushima has signed International Cooperation Graduate School education program provided the Double Degree with 10 Universities in 5 Countries which are Harbin Institute of Technology, Tongii University, Xidian Jiaotong University, Dalian University of Technology and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications in China, University of Auckland (New Zealand) , Kyungpook National University and Korea Maritime University (Korea) , Florida Atlantic University (U.S.A.) and Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse (France) . In the International Cooperation Graduate School, the students could systematically take the Major and Minor curriculums and are able to study the subjects of the field other than their major fields. In this program, we dispatch and accept the students to/from the overseas universities. We educate the engineers that create the highly and interdisciplinary scientific skill, challenge to the new field of research boldly and are active with a good communication skill on the global stage. We intend also to enhance the internationalization and communization for the education of the graduate school′s level by dispatching/accepting the academic staffs mutually.

As an annual academic conference, ICPMS has been successfully held over the last 7 years in Shanghai, Hangzhou, Yichang and online platform, attracted delegates from more than 10 countries and regions including China, Thailand, Japan, the United States, South Korea. During May 23-25, 2024, the 7th International Conference on Physics, Mathematics and Statistics (ICPMS2024) was successfully held in Yichang, China and online platform! This conference included keynote speeches, invited speeches, oral and poster presentations, and featured multi-topic special sessions, including: Fusion and Plasma Physics, Gravitation and Cosmology, Non-localized quantum mechanics and quantum entanglement, Engineering Thermophysics, Electrical Materials and Applications. Prof. Lixing Zhou from Tsinghua University, Prof. Qiwei Zhan from Zhejiang University and Prof. Fang Wang from Beihang University attended the conference and delivered keynote speeches. In addition, experts and scholars from the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, Surgut State University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Harbin Institute of Technology, Northeastern University, and other universities and institutes shared more than 20 wonderful speeches. This conference proceedings included 22 accepted articles selected from 54 submissions, all the papers have been through rigorous review and process to meet the requirements of international publication standard. We would like to express our gratitude to the reviewers of these manuscripts, who provided constructive criticism and stimulated comments and suggestions to the authors. We are extremely grateful as organizers, technical program committee and editors and extend our most sincere thanks to all the authors for their excellent contribution and work. Previous work shows that Average Bit Error Probability (ABEP) of SM systems under Non Line of Sight (NLOS) scenario is lower than that under Line of Sight (LOS) scenario because of a lower spatial correlation with a given Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR). However, when transmit power is constrained as a constant, the SNR under LOS scenario is larger than that under NLOS scenario benefiting from the strong LOS ray. Spatial correlation and SNR are two contradictory factors which both impact the performance of SM systems. In order to analyze performances of SM systems with a constant power under LOS and NLOS indoor scenarios, 15150 complex MIMO channel matrices are measured in a typical building of Shenzhen Graduate School, Harbin Institute of Technology. Based on measured data and motivated by the Minimum Distance Lower Bound (MDLB) approach, Euclid distances between received symbols of SM systems, as a monotonic function of ABEP, is analyzed. It is found that the effect of the SNR is much more important than the spatial correlation in the indoor environment so that SM system under LOS scenario shows a better performance than NLOS when the transmitting power is a constant. Furthermore, it is observed that bottlenecks of ABEP under LOS and NLOS scenarios are different. Under the LOS scenario, the bottleneck of ABEP is the antenna index error. On the contrary, under the NLOS scenario, the bottleneck of ABEP is the joint error. Using two extreme cases, such phenomena is analytically explained in the paper.

Future directions for research and education

This paper deals with the bibliometric study of publication on Nanotechnology in India in the Web of Science database. The analysis period is from the year 2001 to September 2011. This paper finds out the individual author’s contribution, geographical distribution, year-wise research in nanotechnology in India. Citation of articles, ranking of Journals, h-index, g-index and gh-index. Histcite and Bibexcel tools are used for data analysis. Consequences of such studies are useful for research administrators, policy architects and endowment agencies.

Nanotechnology have huge potential in developing several drug delivery systems and also in various biomedical applications. Nanotechnology research is booming worldwide, having an impact on multiple sectors and with a general belief that medical and biological applications will form the greatest area of expansion over the next decade, driven by an attempt to bring radical solutions to areas of unmet medical needs. Applications of nanotechnology in medicine are especially promising, and areas such as disease diagnosis, drug targeting at specific sites in the body, and molecular imaging are being intensively investigated and some products are undergoing clinical trials. Different approaches like charged, gold and magnetic resonance nanoparticles show promise for drug delivery applications. Nanoparticulate drug delivery systems are extensively used to treat diseases of cardiovascular, lung, brain, cancer, etc.

A growing scientific interest in the fabrication of porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) films and their further applications for the fabrication of various devices, has given rise to many studies of porous alumina properties. Highly ordered porous alumina exhibits some unique physical and optical characteristics, especially in the visible spectrum. These properties are of technological importance for applications in the fields of micro and nanotechnology.

With their 19th Annual Conference, the Natural Health Products (NHP) Research Society of Canada celebrates 20 years of excellence in supporting research and evidence-based policy and product development in Canada and around the world. The general theme of the Conference is thus appropriately entitled “New Frontiers in NHP Research: Celebrating 20 Years of Innovation”. Indeed, it is in a forward-looking stance that the Conference showcases state-of-the art innovations in NHP research from the academic, industry and governmental perspectives, as is the tradition of the Society. Scientific sessions cover NHP applications in cancer, cardiometabolic disease, and aging as well as food derived NHPs and industry innovations. Panel discussions are another trademark of the Annual Conference and address inconsistencies in NHP lab testing, the role of Traditional Herbal Medicine in NHP research, and new developments in NHP analysis. Finally, government and industry representatives offer perspectives on national and international regulatory frameworks.

Summary form only give. Due to the growing research in nano technology, the requirement of numerical tools becomes demanding for accurate and fast design. The shrinking electronic or optical devices have brought intense computational burden than ever for the accuracy-concerned refined computational meshes. Based on the above reason, high performance computers are needed to achieve multiple design tasks. At present, there are couple electromagnetic simulators available for the design of nano or THz devices. However, the performance of different algorithms may differ a lot. In this work, the performance of open-source parallel Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) software on supercomputer Eos and Ranger and the performance of a Finite Element Method (FEM) package on a single workstation are compared for plasmonic waveguide mode coupling simulation (Fig. 1). It is shown that, for the difference of numerical algorithms and material boundary treatment between FDTD and FEM, FEM performs better than FDTD for our design problem. For FDTD, the dimension of the computational window is 15.5 × 10 (all physical parameters are normalized so no unit is described) and the total number of grids is 6,200,000. Due to the nature of FDTD, long-time iteration is required to achieve numerical stability and accuracy. Table I lists the wall clock time Eos took for each submitted job with different core number requested. Based on this statistics, the simulation time cannot be reduced further with more than 96 cores. On the other hand, for the same problem, the simulation widow for FEM is also 15.5 × 10. However, the number of unknown used here is only 159,512 (~1/40 of the number used in FDTD) to achieve required accuracy and stability and the computation time is less than 1 minute.

Chemical enhanced oil recovery is another strong growing technology with the potential of a step change innovation, which will help to secure future oil supply by turning resources into reserves. While Substantial amount of crude oil remains in the reservoir after primary and secondary production, conventional production methods give access to on average only one-third of original oil in place, the use of surfactants and polymers allows for recovery of up to another third of this oil. Chemical flooding is of increasing interest and importance due to high oil prices and the need to increase oil production. Research in nanotechnology in the petroleum industry is advancing rapidly and an enormous progress in the application of nanotechnology in this area is to be expected. Nanotechnology has the potential to profoundly change enhanced oil recovery and to improve mechanism of recovery. This paper, therefore, focuses on the reviews of the application of nano technology in chemical flooding process in oil recovery and reviews the application nano in the polymer and surfactant flooding on the interfacial tension process.

The 22nd Power and Energy Society Annual Conference was held on August 30 - September 1, 2011 at University of Fukui. The total number of technical papers was 346, and technical sessions were 43 (42 oral sessions and 1 poster session). An invited lecture, a panel discussion, technical exhibitions and two technical tours were organized. All events were very well attended and the final enrollment attained to 888 registrations. The conference was successfully closed by the great contribution of all participants. The outline of the conference is reported in this article.

This special issue of Advanced Materials presents an overview of nanoscience and nanotechnology research involving characterization, device, biology and medicine, which is being conducted at National Center for Nanoscience and Technology (NCNST) of China. Numerous scientific advances have been achieved in the past 15 years since the founding of NCNST, and partial results have been collected in this special issue. NCNST was co‐founded by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Ministry of Education. It was officially established on December 31, 2003. NCNST adopts an innovative system in that its director takes full responsibilities under the leadership of governing board. The founding director of NCNST was Prof. Chunli Bai, who is currently the president of CAS. The main objective of NCNST lies in basic and applied research of nanoscience and nanotechnology. The goal is to build a top‐level research center, a public platform for nanoresearch open to domestic and foreign countries, a window for international exchange in the field of nanotechnology, and a talent‐training base.
