Quark Matter 2008—the 20th International Conference on Ultra-Relativistic Nucleus–Nucleus Collisions was held in Jaipur, the Pink City of India, from 4–10 February, 2008. Organizing Quark Matter 2008 in India itself indicates the international recognition of the Indian contribution to the field of heavy-ion physics, which was initiated and nurtured by Bikash Sinha, Chair of the conference.The conference was inaugurated by the Honourable Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Smt. Vasundhara Raje followed by the key note address by Professor Carlo Rubbia. The scientific programme started with the theoretical overview, `SPS to RHIC and onwards to LHC' by Larry McLerran followed by several theoretical and experimental overview talks on the ongoing experiments at SPS and RHIC. The future experiments at the LHC, FAIR and J-PARC, along with the theoretical predictions, were discussed in great depth. Lattice QCD predictions on the nature of the phase transition and critical point were vigorously debated during several plenary and parallel session presentations.The conference was enriched by the presence of an unprecedented number of participants; about 600 participants representing 31 countries across the globe. This issue contains papers based on plenary talks and oral presentations presented at the conference. Besides invited and contributed talks, there were also a large number of poster presentations.Members of the International Advisory Committee played a pivotal role in the selection of speakers, both for plenary and parallel session talks. The contributions of the Organizing Committee in all aspects, from helping to prepare the academic programme down to arranging local hospitality, were much appreciated. Background/Aim: Congresses, scientific fairs on an academic platform, are held in numerous disciplines all over the world and bring physicians together. Through these congresses, the physicians can follow the latest developments in their profession and present their work. Many researchers first present their work in a congress, then update their work in the light of the feedbacks and publish them in a peer-reviewed journal. Although many oral and poster presentations are made in scientific congresses, a small portion are finally published in a peer-reviewed journal. This may be because the effort spent in preparing an abstract is much less than that spent during the preparation of an entire manuscript. However, the publication of a presentation in a peer-reviewed journal is a gold standard factor showing the quality of research and that it is worthy of publication. More detailed congress abstract evaluation criteria and their proximity to the procedures involved during the journal acceptance stage will likely enhance the publication rate. The purpose of this study was to perform a detailed evaluation of presentations at congresses held by the European Society of Trauma and Emergency Surgery (ESTES) in 2013, 2014, 2015 and determine their rates of publication in peer-reviewed journals. Methods: The booklets for three consecutive annual ESTES congresses (2013, 2014, 2015) containing presented papers were accessed online. All oral and poster presentations were analyzed, and published studies in peer-reviewed journals that are indexed in Google Scholar database until 2019 were identified. These published studies were then analyzed and used to determine the Publication Factor for Congress (PFC) for these congresses. Results: The total number of presentations at ESTES congresses in 2013-2015 was 1746, of which 878 were oral (50.2%) and 868 (49.8%) were in poster form. 450 (25.7%) of these were subsequently published in peer-reviewed journals that are indexed in Google Scholar database. 148 of the published papers (32.9%) were based on poster presentations, and 302 (67.1%) were from oral presentations. Conclusion: The publication rate of oral and poster presentations presented at the 2013-2015 ESTES congresses from the date of the congress to 2019 was 25.7%. Oral presentations were published more than poster presentations. It suggests that the papers with high publication potential have a high tendency to be presented as oral presentations by the authors. Determination of publication rates and publication factor for a congress at specific intervals may increase the motivation of authors at the participation and submission stages and strengthen the brand value.

Medical conferences provide a forum for the rapid dissemination of research directly to health professionals and academics. However, the published record of poster and oral presentations from these meetings is usually limited to abstracts. We aimed to assess how many wound studies presented as conference abstracts were eventually published in journals and to identify the factors that predicted publication. The study was a retrospective review. We identified abstracts relating to oral and poster presentation from two large wound conferences. Following data extraction from the abstracts, a systematic search was conducted to examine if the research was subsequently published as a journal article. A time-to-event analysis was conducted to assess predictive associations between features of the research reported in the conference abstracts and time to full publication. In total, 492 abstracts from two European wound care conferences were identified (467 after exclusions). Of the abstracts included, 60% (279) were for posters and 40% (188) were for oral presentations. Over half of the abstracts (53%) reported results from case studies or case series design. In total, only 57 (12%) of the abstracts included resulted in a related publication. Analysis suggested that those studies reporting positive findings were significantly more likely to be published (hazard ratio 1.79, P= 0.001, 95% CIs 1.26-2.55). Few studies presented as conference abstracts at these two wounds conferences were subsequently published. This may be because of the low methodological quality of studies accepted for poster or oral presentation.

The 27th edition of the European Fuel Cell Forum with a focus on Low Temperature Electrolyzers, Fuel Cells, and H2 Processing saw the return to the normal in-person conference modus. With the hitherto highest number of participants of the low-temperature conference branch, an excellent line-up of oral and poster presentations, and an overall positive vibe in conversations, the conference asserted the standing of the EFCF as the prime forum for scientific-technical exchanges on electrochemical hydrogen technologies in Europe. The drive towards hydrogen as the currency of a sustainable global economy is as dynamic as ever. Yet, enabling the epochal energy transition through market-ready water electrolysis and fuel cell technologies remains an ambitious undertaking, especially when facing the immediacy of rapidly transforming climate and ecological systems. It needs unprecedented alignment of efforts from scientists, technology developers, and system integrators, driven by a high awareness of socioeconomic and environmental needs and relying on unwavering government support. ‘Integration’, the motto of the EFCF2023 conference, refers to the realization that any challenge related to the performance or stability of fuel cell or electrolyzer technologies, even if it originates deep at the materials level, will not be solved in isolation. It necessitates integration from an early stage, to be achieved scale-to-scale, component-to-component, and lab-to-lab, and combining modeling and characterization in meaningful ways. Challenged by the socioeconomic and political landscape and aligning with this motto, EFCF2023 kept its focus on fundamental understanding of electrocatalyst materials and reaction kinetics, as well as progresses and current issues for fuel cell and electrolyzer systems and their integration across the different physical levels. Furthermore, contributions related to advanced modelling and diagnostics, as well as engineering, system integration, and demonstration of real-world devices. In total 172 papers were presented at EFCF2023, of which 108 have been presented orally. Several poster presentations also prepared as an MP4 record presentation accessible to conference participants through EFCF's website also after the conference, similar to the recorded oral presentations. Finally, a limited number of scientific papers have been selected to become part of this Special Issue. Alongside EFCF2023, the 5th International Microbial/Enzymatic Electrochemistry Platform Symposium (MEEP2023) was held. This event sparked lively discussions on the use of microbial cells and enzymes as ‘catalysts’ in various electrochemical systems, ranging from electricity generation in microbial fuel cells to the conversion of carbon dioxide into chemicals and fuels in microbial electrosynthesis systems. To bring these technologies to industrial scale, it is essential to explore both fundamental and applied engineering aspects—a focus reflected in the MEEP2023 program. The symposium covered topics such as microbial biofilm functions, electron transfer mechanisms, novel materials and biohybrids, multiscale mass transport, and scale-up challenges. MEEP2023 featured a total of 59 contributions, with 37 delivered as oral presentations. Letter: Addressing Barriers to Student Participation in Neurosurgical Conferences: Experiences From the Inaugural Early Career Neuroscience Virtual Research Symposium.

Objective:The aim of this study was to investigate the scientific publication performance of the abstracts presented at the annual Turkish National Cardiology Congress (TNCC) between 2011 and 2015 and to analyze the variables associated with publication.Methods:The accepted abstracts of five congresses (2011-2015) were screened using the title and names of all authors in English via PubMed and Google Scholar databases. The parameters recorded included presentation type, publication rate, time to publication, affiliated institution, journal name and average impact factor, and average citation number per year for each publication.Results:A total of 2897 abstracts (966 oral presentations and 1931 poster presentations) were accepted in five meetings and 23.4% (n=680) of these were published in national or international peer-reviewed journals. Of the published articles, 32.6% (n=222) were oral presentations and 67.4% (n=458) were poster presentations. The mean time to publication of oral and poster presentations were similar [9 (0-58) vs. 8 (0-62) months, p = 0.150]. According to the type of institution, university hospitals had the highest ratio of publication (58.6%) (p<0.001). All publications were published in 148 journals from 37 different countries. The average citation number of publications was significantly higher than the average impact factor of the journals [1.4 (0-30.1) vs. 1.29 (0.11-19.8), p<0.001].Conclusion:Compared with other national-based literature in other medical fields, the overall publication rate was found to be similar while the time to publication was shorter. The significant difference between citation number and impact factor may be interpreted as positive indicator in terms of high level scientific value for cardiology publications presented in the TNCC.

The Third International Genomic Medicine Conference (3rd IGMC) was organised by the Centre of Excellence in Genomic Medicine Research (CEGMR) at the King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). This conference is a continuation of a series of meetings, which began with the first International Genomic Medicine Conference (1st IGMC, 2011) followed by the second International Genomic Medicine Conference (2nd IGMC, 2013). The 3rd IGMC meeting presented as a timely opportunity to bring scientists from across the world to gather, discuss, and exchange recent advances in the field of genomics and genetics in general as well as practical information on using these new technologies in different basic and clinical applications. The meeting undoubtedly inspired young male and female Saudi researchers, who attended the conference in large numbers, as evidenced by the oversubscribed oral and poster presentations. The conference also witnessed the launch of the first content for npj Genomic Medicine, a high quality new journal was established in partnership by CEGMR with Springer Nature and published as part of the Nature Partner Journal series. Here, we present a brief summary report of the 2-day meeting including highlights from the oral presentations, poster presentations, workshops, poster prize-winners and comments from the distinguished scientists.

In consultation with the technical program committee of AVFOP 2007, we have scheduled a technical program for MWP 2007 that will provide flexibility to the attendees and the guest attendees of both conferences. MWP 2007 will begin with a workshop on photonic integration as enabler of economically-scalable applications of microwave photonics, and proceed with two days of oral and poster sessions. Of the 96 papers, including 11 invited talks, submitted to this year's conference through the website, the committee accepted a total of 65 papers for either oral or poster presentation. The oral presentations have been grouped into sessions that will focus on topics of interest to the microwave photonics community, namely, advances in devices for analog links, radio-over-fiber technology and systems, microwave photonics signal processing, oscillators, optoelectronic integration, microwave photonic techniques for antennas and imaging, and techniques for coherent link and broadband transmission. The poster presentations are also grouped along these topics.

Devendra Lal was an Indian nuclear physicist who began his career studying particle physics while a student at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Bombay, using tracks in nuclear emulsions to study cosmic ray particles and their interactions. He soon moved on to the search for radionuclides produced in the atmosphere by cosmic ray bombardment, independently (with colleagues) discovering radioisotopes of Be, P and Si and using them as geophysical tracers for atmospheric, meteorological and oceanographic processes. His career revolved principally around multiple aspects of cosmic rays, employing theory and experiment to examine their flux, chemical composition and energy spectrum, both at present and in the past through (for example) studies of particle tracks in the minerals of meteorites and lunar samples. He played a major role in developing approaches for the use of terrestrial cosmic-ray-produced isotopes as dating tools and tracers for a wide range of Earth processes, from biological cycles in the ocean to landscape evolution and ice ablation in the Antarctic. At various stages of his career Lal was professor at TIFR and led the geophysics group there, was professor and director of the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad, India, and was professor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego. He was elected fellow of numerous scientific organizations and academies internationally, and was the recipient of many scientific awards and prizes.

The present issue of physica status solidi contains the papers presented at the 37th International Symposium on Compound Semiconductors (ISCS 2010). The symposium was held in Takamatsu, Kagawa, Japan, May 31–June 4, 2010. This symposium was one in an annual series that is held throughout North America, Europe and Asia. The last three conferences were held in Santa Barbara, USA (2009), Rust, Germany (2008) and Kyoto, Japan (2007).The symposium, which began in 1966 under the name “International Symposium on GaAs and Related Compounds” has a long standing tradition in science, technology, and applications of compound semiconductors. At the 2010 conference, 11 subcommittees (Growth and Nanostructure Formation; Electron Devices; Photonic Devices; New Properties and Physics; Spintronics; Nanocharacterization and Nanodevices; GaN and Related Semiconductors; Oxide Semiconductors; Carbon Related Materials; Organic Semiconductors and Other Soft Materials; Solar Cells) covered the entire spectrum of III–V compound semiconductors as well as II–VI, oxide semiconductors, and carbon related materials.The symposium was first collocated with the International Conference on Indium Phosphide and Related Materials (IPRM 2010) as “Compound Semiconductor Week 2010”. The ISCS and IPRM conferences attracted about 670 participants in total and the ISCS 2010 attended by 462 registered participants from more than 22 countries all over the world. Over the course of the symposium, 3 general plenary talks (conducted with IPRM), 3 plenary talks, 41 invited papers, 22 late news papers as well as 368 contributed papers were given as oral or poster presentations. The ISCS 2010 highlighted emerging wide‐band gap and oxide semiconductor materials and devices as well as high‐speed electronics, next generation photonics, and physics studies based on traditional compound semiconductors. The importance of the green application of compound semiconductors was also well addressed.The symposium is also the venue for the attribution of three prestigious scientific awards, the Welker Award, the Quantum Device Award and the Young Scientist Award.The Proceedings contains many of the papers presented at the symposium.We would like to thank all the participants of the ISCS 2010 for contributing to the success of the symposium and acknowledge the diligent work of the committee members and referees of the manuscripts.We would also like to thank Prof. Hiroshi Itoh and other members of Kagawa University for their excellent local organization. Presentations of research are important in the dissemination of new knowledge, but they do not reach the same audience as research published in journals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the proportion of presentations at recent major primary care research conferences that have become published. Oral and poster presentations for completed and work-in-progress projects from the 2007 and 2008 North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG) and Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) annual conferences were included in the analysis. The first presenter for each presentation was searched on PubMed, and titles and abstracts for presentations were compared for content to titles and abstracts of potential matches found on PubMed. We analyzed the proportion of presentations that were published in peer-reviewed journals, mean time to publication, and the proportions of the type of journal in which the article appeared (family medicine vs other) were analyzed. There were 1,329 presentations included in the study. Overall, 34.4% of projects presented were also published. More oral presentations (42.9%) were published than were poster presentations (25.3%) (P <.001). Mean time to publication was 15.4 months. Oral presentations were published more quickly (13.7 months) than poster presentations (18.6 months) (P <.001). Published reports appeared in 192 different journals. Family medicine journals accounted for 36.5% of published. More than one-third of all presentations at STFM and NAPCRG conferences were published in journals indexed in PubMed. Time to publication was comparable to that of other specialties. Fewer than 2 of every 5 reports were published are in a family medicine journal, suggesting vast breadth in family medicine research. Family medicine academicians need to refocus efforts on transforming presentations into published articles in peer-reviewed journals for broader dissemination of research findings.

This special issue of SERRA is devoted to selected and revised papers presented at the fourth edition of the International Workshop on Spatio-Temporal Modelling (METMA4) that was held in Alghero, Italy, on 24–26 September, 2008. In recent years, spatiotemporal modelling has become one of the most interesting and, at the same time, challenging research areas of natural sciences. The relevant literature is growing fast and along directions that range from theoretical works to methodological developments to real world applications. Spatiotemporal systems modelling involves the synthesis of a rich interdisciplinary body of knowledge for which it is necessary to establish a solid theoretical foundation and a science-based methodology with both researchers and practitioners in mind. The purpose of this workshop was to promote the development and application of spatial, temporal, and mainly spatiotemporal statistical methods to different fields related to the environment. The workshop is organized every 2 years to bring together practitioners and researchers of different countries all over the world. The scientific program is characterized by having special invited sessions covering topics on the latest in theory, methods, and applications, as well as contributed papers and posters. There were finally 15 invited speakers, and delegates from more than 15 different countries, 85 participants in total. The scientific committee was of a great help to organize the program selecting papers for oral and/or poster presentations. The oral presentations were mainly given by invited speakers, although there were also some space in the program for contributed papers. We also had a very interesting poster session. We would like to express our gratitude to all the members of the local organizing and scientific committee. We also would like to thank all of the participants for their contributions to the spatiotemporal field in a wide sense: geostatistics, point processes, and lattice data. The workshop achieved the objectives of the organizing committee. There were no parallel sessions and this allowed nice discussions in the sessions, all of them well attended. The interaction among participants was high, and we hope that this will promote future collaborations. In light of the above considerations, the articles of this special issue have been carefully selected to present a variety of conceptual frameworks, powerful methods and comprehensive techniques that address a number of interesting problems in environmental, health, social and medical sciences. Mortality forecasts are nowadays widely used to create and modify retirement pension schemes, disability insurance systems and other social security programmes. During the 20th century, huge increases in life expectancy have followed medical and scientific breakthroughs. Forecasting mortality usually serves practical purposes, as improvements therein could have enormous social and financial implications. Dynamic tables analyze mortality data corresponding to a series of consecutive years. This approach allows to study the calendar effect’s influence on mortality. The representation of the evolution of mortality via dynamic models is an important and timely issue, widely extended over actuaries, statisticians or demographers. On November 8, 2013, the Leaders in Medicine (LIM) program hosted the 5th Annual Research Symposium. Dr. Jerrold Ellner, Chief of the Infectious Diseases section at Boston Medical Centre and Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine, was the keynote speaker and presented his lecture entitled “Tuberculosis – Past, Present and Future”. The LIM symposium gives a forum for LIM as well as non-LIM medical students to present their research work as either an oral or poster presentation. There were a total of 53 abstracts presented and five oral presentations. The present volume of the IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Sciences participates in the 1st 2022 International Conference on Sustainable Environment, Development, and Energy (CONSER 2022) to be held in Sanur, Denpasar City, Bali, Indonesia on December 5 - 6, 2022. The conference with the theme of “Energy and Sustainable Environment” was organized by the Institut Teknologi Nasional Yogyakarta (ITNY), Indonesia and in cooperation with Naresuan University, Thailand and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Perak Branch, Malaysia as co-organizers.The CONSER 2022 is the first series of conferences that brings together researchers from all over the world to present and discuss the latest research, contribute to sustainable environment, technology and sustainable development and energy resources, and encourage more research cooperation. The will of the authorities, together with the important role of scientists in creating various opportunities is to strengthen the research culture and downstream research outputs, ultimately solving problems in industry and society.The conference technical program includes five keynote speakers, invited speakers, oral, and poster presentations. Session tracks included Urban Studies and Sustainable Environment, Climate Change and Geosciences, Technology and Development, Material Science and Energy. The conference was attended by over 100 scientists and engineers from 20 countries with diverse backgrounds from academia, government, and industry in Asia, Africa, Europe and America. Oral presentations in hybrid format (offline and online) include 84 full papers, 15 abstracts, and 9 posters. All papers presented formed the core of the conference, focusing on the conference theme and providing many opportunities for discussion, ultimately leading to a sustainable environment and energy. Distinguished plenary speakers from five leading experts presented their outstanding research achievements in various areas of Environment and Sustainable Energy. This public lecture was held on the morning of the first day after the opening ceremony. Presentations cover a wide range of conference topics, from disaster management to new materials for energy. The keynote speeches and progress reports on their research build bridges between different subject areas in energy, climate change, economics, and urban development, and provide insight into new areas for non-experts. In addition to the main conference, awards have been given for the best paper, best presenter, and best poster.Papers for this conference have been selected following a rigorous peer review process. All papers were all reviewed by international and national peer reviewers, and a minimum of three reviewers were required to review each full paper. On this occasion, we would like to thank the organizing committee, authors, reviewers, and volunteers for their professionalism, and for always working hard to make the conference a success. Contributions and presentations also make this event a very exciting forum, adding value to learning, discussion and exchange of ideas, and to all speakers and authors meeting and interacting with old and new people from different countries.
