Drivers for Internet of Things (IoT) adoption in supply chains: Implications for sustainability in the post-pandemic era

High Performance Computing (HPC) is the ability to process data and perform complex calculations at extremely high speeds. Current HPC platforms can achieve calculations on the order of quadrillions of calculations per second with quintillions on the horizon. The past three decades witnessed a vast increase in the use of HPC across different scientific, engineering and business communities, for example, sequencing the genome, predicting climate changes, designing modern aerodynamics, or establishing customer preferences. Although HPC has been well incorporated into science curricula such as bioinformatics, the same cannot be said for most computing programs. This working group will explore how HPC can make inroads into computer science education, from the undergraduate to postgraduate levels. The group will address research questions designed to investigate topics such as identifying and handling barriers that inhibit the adoption of HPC in educational environments, how to incorporate HPC into various curricula, and how HPC can be leveraged to enhance applied critical thinking and problem solving skills. Four deliverables include: (1) a catalog of core HPC educational concepts, (2) HPC curricula for contemporary computing needs, such as in artificial intelligence, cyberanalytics, data science and engineering, or internet of things, (3) possible infrastructures for implementing HPC coursework, and (4) HPC-related feedback to the CC2020 project.

The transition towards net-zero emissions is inevitable for humanity’s future. Of all the sectors, electrical energy systems emit the most emissions. This urgently requires the witnessed accelerating technological landscape to transition towards an emission-free smart grid. It involves massive integration of intermittent wind and solar-powered resources into future power grids. Additionally, new paradigms such as large-scale integration of distributed resources into the grid, proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, and electrification of different sectors are envisioned as essential enablers for a net-zero future. However, these changes will lead to unprecedented size, complexity and data of the planning and operation problems of future grids. It is thus important to discuss and consider High Performance Computing (HPC), parallel computing, and cloud computing prospects in any future electrical energy studies. This article recounts the dawn of parallel computation in power system studies, providing a thorough history and paradigm background for the reader, leading to the most impactful recent contributions. The reviews are split into Central Processing Unit (CPU) based, Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) based, and Cloud-based studies and smart grid applications. The state-of-the-art is also discussed, highlighting the issue of standardization and the future of the field. The reviewed papers are predominantly focused on classical imperishable electrical system problems. This indicates the need for further research on parallel and HPC approaches applied to future smarter grid challenges, particularly to the integration of renewable energy into the smart grid.

A recent trend in Internet of Things (IoT) is to connect billions of ordinary objects to the Internet and allows these objects to exchange data for smarter services. As smartphones have widely spread in the world and generate various data, it will represent a large portion of heterogeneous interconnected IoT devices. This trend influence users to perceive that the usability of the smartphone mobile application represents the usability of the general IoT service. This article introduces a novel IoT middleware framework to improve the usability of a mobile application, and thereby improve the usability of the IoT service provided through the mobile application. The core idea of our self-adaptive IoT middleware framework is to monitor and analyze application user's behavior, identify symptoms reducing application usability, and autonomously improve the application's interface for users without any intervention from the application developer. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is shown through case studies comparing several different mobile applications from a same business domain.

OBJECTIVE: At present, Internet of things (IoT) technologies such as radio frequency identification devices (RFID) have been widely used. In such context, manufacturing industries of semiconductor integrated circuits have gradually realised that it is necessary to integrate IoT technologies such as RFID with other systems of technologies. The research provides a new idea for the deep integration of IoT technologies including RFID with new-generation information technologies (IT) such as big data and deep learning and drives IoT technologies to develop with multiple functions and diverse types. DESIGN, METHODOLOGY, and APPROACH: The research takes the manufacturing enterprises of semiconductor integrated circuits as the objects and integrates IoT technologies involving RFID and intelligent sensors with new-generation IT technologies such as big data, sensing database, deep learning, knowledge discovery, etc. On this basis, a process innovation mode based on the integration of IoT and sensing big data is established. Based on the characteristics of sensing big data of enterprises manufacturing semiconductor integrated circuits, the innovation mode is designed in three stages including: data integration and fusion, data optimisation and modelling, and data application. Moreover, the system architecture, key technologies, modelling process, and algorithm design are also analysed. FINDINGS: A process innovation mode of semiconductor integrated circuit products based on the integration of IoT and sensing big data is provided.

This chapter presents the field of hydroinformatics as a game-changer in the water sector business. It reflects on Mike Abbott's original ideas and evaluates their impact from the perspective of water business owners, water consultants, clients, and communities. Mike Abbott promoted a novel concept, combining theoretical and practical aspects of modelling, towards ‘industrial modelling systems’. The chapter traces the development of this concept, from its early adoption by government-funded research institutes engaged in scientific support to hydraulic engineering, through establishment of market for water-modelling software products, to its broad adoption by consultants. Mike Abbott also saw a significant opportunity for hydroinformatics in the developing world. New policies and businesses were easier to implement in countries without a mature market of ideas resisting a change. Many of his followers were eager to explore business paths, which were much faster and more agile than those in academic circles. Most large companies that are currently developing commercial applications and tools for water modelling matured during the so-called ‘third modelling generation’, when generic modelling tools started to be developed. Subsequently, the real growth was observed when the knowledge encapsulation and robustness of the applications expanded their use from specialists to a broad pool of water professionals and practitioners. The social impact of hydroinformatics was significant as it spread through a wide range of organisations impacting decision making, education, innovation and knowledge sharing. As modelling systems became a norm in the water business, the business itself has been transformed. Impacts of current technologies and new data sources on water modelling business are presented (such as the Cloud, High Performance Computing - HPC, virtualisation, internet of things - IoT, remote sensing, and others), and how they impact current needs of software producers and users. Diverse business models have emerged, which need to meet the future challenges of urban and environmental water management under challenges of climate change. With the large and continuously growing community of modelling experts and users, it can be argued that the Mike Abbott's vision of hydroinformatics has been well established.

This volume contains a unique collection of papers collected at 2nd International Conference on Electronic Information and Communication Engineering (EICE 2023), which took place in Guangzhou, China in January 13th to 15th, 2023 (virtual conference). Each paper recognizes the seminal contributions to Electronic Information and Communication Engineering made by every author, and acknowledges their impact on their own researches.The 60 scientific participants had many fruitful discussions and exchanges that contributed to the success of the Conference. Participants from more than 10 countries made the Conference truly international in scope.There were 3 plenary keynote speeches covering the different areas of the Conference: Prof. Yongjin Zhou (Shanghai University, China) talked on Plasmonic Metasensors based on New Physical Mechanisms, Assoc. Prof. Santhosh Krishna B V (New Horizon College of Engineering, India) on Industrial Automation Using Internet of Things (Iiot) – (Opportunities and Challenges), Dr. Md. Khaja Mohiddin (BIT Raipur, India) on An Overview of Mobility in Wireless Sensor Network. The speakers gave very illuminating lectures that drew many people’s full attention. These speeches, held on Saturday evening, were very accessible to a general audience. In addition, there were 3 oral reports on ongoing current research. These talks covered the full range of the Conference topics, which includes Wireless Networks and Information Systems, Digital Electronic Technology, GPS and Wireless Location, Communication Electronic Circuit, Electronic Science and Technology, Analog Electronics, etc..All in all, the 2nd International Conference on Electronic Information and Communication Engineering in Guangzhou was very successful. The plenary speeches and the progress and oral reports bridged the gap between the different fields of electronic science and technology, making it possible for non-experts in a given area to gain insight into new areas. Also, included among the speakers were several young scientists, who brought new perspectives to their fields.We would like to acknowledge the authors of the papers collected in the present volume, the members of the Technical Program Committee and Local Organizing Chair for their guidance and support, and the referees for their generous work. We are glad to introduce you that the 2020 International Symposium on Electronic Information Technology and Communication Engineering (ISEITCE 2020), supported by Myanmar Institute of Information Technology, Wuhan University of Technology, Changsha University of Science and Technology, was successfully held on June 19, 2020. In light of worldwide travel restriction and the impact of COVID-19, ISEITCE 2020 was carried out in the form of virtual conference to avoid personnel gatherings. Because most participants were still highly enthusiastic about participating in this conference, we chose to carry out ISEITCE 2020 via online platform according to the original schedule instead of postponing it. ISEITCE 2020 aimed to provide a flexible platform for experts and scholars in the field of Electronic Information Technology and Communication Engineering to disseminate the latest research achievements and advanced technologies, as well as to promote the cooperation between academics.We are greatly honored to have invited Prof. Prof. G R Sinha from Myanmar Institute of Information Technology to serve as our Conference Chair. The rest of the committee was composed of nearly twenty privileged scholars from different renowned universities and institutes around the globe.During the conference, the conference model was divided into three sessions, including oral presentations, keynote speeches, and online Q&A discussion. In the first part, some scholars, whose submissions were selected as the excellent papers, were given about 5-10 minutes to perform their oral presentations one by one. Then in the second part, keynote speakers were each allocated 30-45 minutes to hold their speeches. Our beloved Conference Chair, Prof. Sinha, was also invited to present his latest research. In addition, we had Prof. Rajveer S. Yaduvanshi, Professor and Director EQDC (S), AIACTR, Delhi, to present his talk on Rectangular DRA design and applications. In the last part of the conference, all participants were invited to join in a WeChat group to discuss and explore the academic issues after the presentations. The online discussion was lasted for about 30-60 minutes. The first two parts were conducted via online collaboration tool, Zoom, while the online discussion was carried out through instant communication tool, WeChat. The online platform enabled all participants to join this grand academic event from their own home.We are glad to share with you that we still received lots of submissions from the conference during this special period. Hence, we selected a bunch of high-quality papers and compiled them into the proceedings after rigorously reviewed them. These papers feature following topics but are not limited to: Electronic Information Technology, Communication Engineering, and other related topics. All the papers have been through rigorous review and process to meet the requirements of International publication standard.Lastly, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Chairman, the distinguished keynote speakers, as well as all the participants. PurposeThe present paper is an attempt to study Education 4.0 supported by Industry 4.0 tools and techniques. The main purpose of the study is to examine the acceptance and use of one of the internet of things (IoT)-based learning management systems, i.e. videoconferencing application (Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, GoToMeeting, WebEx), by academicians of higher education using the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model.Design/methodology/approachThe study comprises 218 responses of academicians associated with higher education in the Sultanate of Oman. Descriptive and factor analysis of the collected data are employed using SPSS-26. Further, using Amos-21, the fit and validity indices of the measurement model are computed. Various relationships of the UTAUT structural model along with moderation effects of gender and nationality are tested.FindingsThe results suggest that performance expectancy, effort expectancy and social influence significantly predict behavioral intention. In turn, behavioral intention and facilitating conditions also significantly predict the use behavior of academicians for videoconferencing in higher education. Finally, gender moderates two out of four UTAUT relations, but nationality does not moderate any of these relations.Originality/valueA lot of prior studies investigate several models to use technology-enabled pedagogy from educators' or students' perspectives. There are very limited studies that examine IoT-based learning tools within the UTAUT environment. Additionally, no study is available that considers UTAUT relations for the use of videoconferencing in higher education. Also, in the present study, one more moderator, i.e. nationality, is tested.

The purpose of the article is to describe a prototype system for managing energy security in small ports based on the use of IT technology. Additional evaluation of the usability of the described sytem will be carried out based on the main pillars of the Industrial Revolution 4.0, which include the integration of advanced information technology (IT), automation (OT), "Internet of Things" (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) systems. This affects IT systems, which are becoming more complex and sophisticated all the time. This causes an increase in dependencies - the more complex the information system, the more complex the security must be.In the described system there will be the use of a modular system of hybrid installation of renewable energy sources mainly from wind energy, photovoltaics and biogas, stored in an energy storage. Based on the use of energy storage and management of technology through a secure intelligent information network, the needs for storage and secure transmission of information and data, green electricity production, in accordance with the priorities of the European Union (green energy, green transformation European data strategy) will be described. The article also presents the types of renewable energy sources (RES) in relation to the use of systems supporting their management. The author will also try to answer the question whether such measures will significantly strengthen the energy security of a modern organization.

In the current era of Industry 4.0, the focus of academia and industry is to create a smarter and autonomous manufacturing system. In this regard, numerous modifications have been observed in the manufacturing systems from a mass to batch production system and then customized and personalized production. Adoption of several emerging technologies such as the High-Performance Computing, Internet of Things (IoT), Semantic Technology, Blockchain, Digital Twin, and Artificial Intelligence makes a difference between traditional manufacturing enterprises and fourth-generation factories. In this paper, a framework of the manufacturing system is delivered with an integration of the IoT and Semantic Technology to achieve the target of smart factories. Only a small portion of planned work is shown in this paper as an ontological model of Inclusive Manufacturing System with a simple example of Nut-Bolt manufacturing.

This chapter addresses a review and some relevant discussions about blind statistical computing in medical signal and image analysis for remote and pervasive medical systems through medical sensors in an internet of medical things (IoMT)-based intelligent healthcare platform. Blind computing as an outstanding keyword of this research is defined for IoT/IoMT nodes where statistical methods are investigated for making adaptive and high-performance blind computing. In addition, a taxonomy of different blind and non-blind computing techniques is illustrated with detailing various properties for IoMT applications. Then, a further discussion on statistical blind computing for adaptive data reconstruction is given to indicate power of statistical estimators to reach the high-performance blind computing. Digitization of societies changes the way we live, work, learn, communicate, and collaborate. In the age of digital transformation IT environments with a large number of rather small structures like Internet of Things (IoT), Microservices, or mobility systems are emerging to support flexible and agile digitized products and services. Adaptable ecosystems with service-oriented enterprise architectures are the foundation for self-optimizing, resilient run-time environments and distributed information systems. The resulting business disruptions affect almost all new information processes and systems in the context of digitization. Our aim are more flexible and agile transformations of both business and information technology domains with more flexible enterprise information systems through adaptation and evolution of digital enterprise architectures. The present research paper investigates mechanisms for decision-controlled digitization architectures for Internet of Things and Microservices by evolving enterprise architecture reference models and state of the art elements for architectural engineering for micro-granular systems.

Smart devices can be considered an essential element of the Internet-of-Things (IoT) revolution. Devices able to gather and process data to provide high-level information to other nodes will enable advanced and effective smart applications in the near future. To let IoT objects to become smarter and smarter, advanced embedded architecture must be considered. In this direction, this paper exploits the use of heterogeneous Asymmetric MultiProcessing (AMP) techniques in the IoT scenario by considering a smart device in which real-time acquisition and processing capabilities are necessary: a drone. In the paper an AMP-based drone system is first presented, considering a System-on-Chip (SoC) solution based on microprocessors and microcontrollers. Then time performance in navigation parameters acquisition and processing is presented, considering a real-time operating system running on the core delegated to such task. Presented results show the benefits of the proposed approach in which high real-time constraints are satisfied in calculating navigation parameters, while other demanding IoT tasks can be executed simultaneously. Along with the selected use case, the proposed approach can be used in a wide range of smart devices in which higher computational performance are required.
