Prevention of Diabetes Using Data Mining Techniques

Education can be utilized as a tool to face many problems, overcome many hurdles in life. The knowledge obtained from education helps to enhance opportunities in one's employment development. To extract useful information from the knowledge obtained, Educational Data Mining is widely used. Educational data mining provides the process of applying different data mining tools and techniques to analyze and visualize the data of an institution (school) and can be used to discover a unique pattern of students' academic performance and behavior. The present work intends to enhance students' academic performance in secondary school using data mining techniques. Real data was collected using school reports and questionnaire method by the Portugal school which has been used in this paper. Naive Bayesian algorithm can be easily implemented to predict the students' academic performance and behavior. Classification of students into two classes, pass and fail, involves training phase and testing phase. In training phase, Naive Bayes classifier is built and in the testing phase, Naive Bayes classifier is used to make the prediction. The accuracy of the classifier is calculated using WEKA tool in which confusion matrix is generated. The accuracy of the classifier obtained is 87% which can be further improved by the selection of appropriate attributes. Developing the classification algorithms in this way helps to obtain a more efficient student performance predictor tool using other data mining algorithms and it also helps to improve the quality of education in an educational institution.

The thriving medical applications of data mining in the fields of medicine and public health has led to the popularity of its use in knowledge discovery in databases (KDD). Data mining has revealed novel biomedical and healthcare acquaintances for clinical decision making that has great potential to improve the treatment quality of hospitals and increase the survival rate of patients. Disease diagnosis is one of the applications where data mining tools are establishing the successful results. Data mining intends to endow with a systematic survey of current techniques of knowledge discovery in databases using data mining techniques that are in use in today’s medical research. Discussion is made to enable the disease diagnosis and the breakthrough of hidden healthcare patterns from related databases is offered. Also, the use of data mining to discover such relationships as those between health conditions and a disease is presented. It further discusses about the tools that can be used for the processing and classification of data. This paper summarizes various technical articles on medical diagnosis and prognosis. It has also been focused on current research being carried out using the data mining techniques to enhance the disease(s) forecasting process. This research paper provides future trends of current techniques of KDD, using data mining tools for healthcare. It also confers significant issues and challenges associated with data mining and healthcare in general. The research found a growing number of data mining applications, including analysis of health care centers for better health policy-making, detection of disease outbreaks and preventable hospital deaths. The root causes of all diseases get closer towards drugs i.e. the foremost risk factor of all hilarious diseases. Drug addiction using WEKA has been used that brings into light concerning majority of drug abusers started abusing drugs at age below 20yrs.It is to make aware the druggist about the various diseases that are caused with heavy or long term intake of drugs in their life. So, to make an expert system that will awake the youth about precarious use of drugs and also alert the affected person.

Recently, the capabilities of generating and collecting data have been increasing rapidly. Widespread use of bar codes for most commercial products, the computerization of many business, and the advance in data collection tools have provided us with huge amount of retail data. This explosive growth in data and databases has generated an urgent need for data mining techniques and tools that can extract implicit, previously unknown and potentially useful information from data in data storages. One of the most popular data mining approaches is "association rules", which is commonly applied to analyze market baskets to help managers to determine which items are frequently purchased together by customers. Affinity analysis is a data analysis and data mining technique that discovers co-occurrence relationships among activities performed by (or recorded about) specific individuals or groups. In general, this can be applied to any process where agents can be uniquely identified and information about their activities can be recorded. In retail, affinity analysis is used to perform market basket analysis, in which retailers seek to understand the purchase behavior of customers. This information can then be used for purposes of cross-selling and up-selling, in addition to influencing sales promotions, loyalty programs, store design, and discount plans.

Stock market prediction with high accuracy has always been an interesting subject for most investors and professional analysts. Data mining techniques are providing great aid to extract interesting and hidden knowledge from datasets. Financial data mining tools assist investors in their investment decisions, thereby reducing their investment risks. Associative classification rule mining is a promising approach in data mining that utilises the association rule discovery techniques to construct classification systems, also known as associative classifiers. This paper aims to develop an intelligent transaction system based on associative classification rule mining (ACR) and phenotypic artificial immune system (AIS) which discovers trading rules from numerical indicators. A new fitness function as a different measure of quality for quantitative association is suggested considering interestingness of rules. Based on the empirical studies on the top eight companies in the S&P 500 stocks, observed results demonstrate the superior prediction accuracy over the genetic algorithm based technique and the 'buy and hold' strategy.

Over the last decade data warehousing and data mining tools have evolved from research into a unique and popular applications, ranging from data warehousing and data mining for decision support to business intelligence and other kind of applications. The chapter presents and discusses data warehousing methodologies along with the main components of data mining tools and technologies and how they all could be integrated together for knowledge management in a broader sense. Knowledge management refers to the set of processes developed in an organization to create, extract, transfer, store and apply knowledge. The chapter also focuses on how data mining tools and technologies could be used in extracting knowledge from large databases or data warehouses. Knowledge management increases the ability of an organization to learn from its environment and to incorporate knowledge into the business processes by adapting to new tools and technologies. Knowledge management is also about the reusability of the knowledge that is being extracted and stored in the knowledge base. One way to improve the reusability is to use this knowledge base as front-ends to case-based reasoning (CBR) applications. The chapter further focuses on the reusability issues of knowledge management and presents an integrated framework for knowledge management by combining data mining (DM) tools and technologies with CBR methodologies. The purpose of the integrated framework is to discover, validate, retain, reuse and share knowledge in an organization with its internal users as well as its external users. The framework is independent of application domain and would be suitable for uses in areas, such as data mining and knowledge management in e-government.

Objective: Financial fraud has been a big concern for many organizations across industries; billions of dollars are lost yearly because of this fraud. So businesses employ data mining techniques to address this continued and growing problem. This paper aims to review research studies conducted to detect financial fraud using data mining tools within one decade and communicate the current trends to academic scholars and industry practitioners. Method: Various combinations of keywords were used to identify the pertinent articles. The majority of the articles retrieved from Science Direct but the search spanned other online databases (e.g., Emerald, Elsevier, World Scientific, IEEE, and Routledge - Taylor and Francis Group). Our search yielded a sample of 65 relevant articles (58 peer-reviewed journal articles with 7 conference papers). One-fifth of the articles was found in Expert Systems with Applications (ESA) while about one-tenth found in Decision Support Systems (DSS). Results: 41 data mining techniques were used to detect fraud across different financial applications such as health insurance and credit card. Logistic regression model appeared to be the leading data mining tool in detecting financial fraud with a 13% of usage.In general, supervised learning tool have been used more frequently than the unsupervised ones. Financial statement fraud and bank fraud are the two largest financial applications being investigated in this area – about 63%, which corresponds to 41 articles out of the 65 reviewed articles. Also, the two primary journal outlets for this topic are ESA and DSS. Conclusion: This review provides a fast and easy-to-use source for both researchers and professionals, classifies financial fraud applications into a high-level and detailed-level framework, shows the most significant data mining techniques in this domain, and reveals the most countries exposed to financial fraud.

Stray current interference causes severe electrochemical corrosion to buried pipelines and metal structure in DC mass transit systems. The corrosion current density is an important parameter that affecting the characteristic of stray current corrosion (SCC). A method combining electrochemical experiment with the data mining technique was utilized in this research to study the corrosion current density during stray current process. An improved PSO-NN model was proposed to predict the corrosion current density during the SCC process. In order to improve the forecasting performance, the improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) algorithm was used to optimize the updating of weights and biases in the neural network (NN). The data mining process was conducted based on the stray current corrosion database, which was recorded by electrochemical corrosion experiment. The data mining results show that the accuracy of IPSO-NN model is better than back-propagation neural network (BPNN) and PSO-NN model. In this way, an accurate mapping between input variables and corrosion current density is successfully established using IPSO-NN algorithm as a data mining tool. The presented model provides a new approach for the prediction and monitoring of the stray current corrosion in DC mass transit system.

Data mining techniques have been concentrated for malware detection in the recent decade. The battle between security analyzers and malware scholars is everlasting as innovation grows. The proposed methodologies are not adequate while evolutionary and complex nature of malware is changing quickly and therefore turn out to be harder to recognize. This paper presents a systematic and detailed survey of the malware detection mechanisms using data mining techniques. In addition, it classifies the malware detection approaches in two main categories including signature-based methods and behavior-based detection. The main contributions of this paper are: (1) providing a summary of the current challenges related to the malware detection approaches in data mining, (2) presenting a systematic and categorized overview of the current approaches to machine learning mechanisms, (3) exploring the structure of the significant methods in the malware detection approach and (4) discussing the important factors of classification malware approaches in the data mining. The detection approaches have been compared with each other according to their importance factors. The advantages and disadvantages of them were discussed in terms of data mining models, their evaluation method and their proficiency. This survey helps researchers to have a general comprehension of the malware detection field and for specialists to do consequent examinations.

Educational data mining (EDM) is an up-coming interdisciplinary research field, in which data mining (DM) techniques applying in educational data. Its objective is to better understand how students gain knowledge and recognize the settings in which they learn to improve educational outcomes. Educational systems can store a huge amount of data that coming from multiple sources in different formats. Each particular educational problem requires different types of the mining techniques because traditional DM techniques cannot be applied directly to these types of data and problems. There are many general data mining tools are available but these are not designed for deal with educational data and an educator cannot use these tools without knowledge of data mining concepts. To overcome from this problem many authors provided educational data mining tools with different data mining techniques for different purposes. This paper surveys the EDM Tools from 2001 to 2016 and presents the consolidated list of tools in one place to help the EDM researchers. Then categorizes the tools based on data mining methods and explains the usage of EDM Tools.

The trends of data mining on healthcare data for improving medical services have increased because of the electronic healthcare record(EHR) system, which collects a massive amount of data on a daily basis. In the current scenario, hospital maintains its EHR system and stores the detailed information of patients. Data mining for healthcare improvement requires the data from all the EHR systems located at a different location to be stored at the central data mining server. Collection of healthcare data at some untrusted central data mining server raises privacy threats. Healthcare data contains patients’ private information and sharing this information for data mining creates privacy issues. Most of the previous research either focused on k-anonymity technique which causes information loss and decreases data mining accuracy or privacy preserving data mining which is focused on only specific data mining technique. We adopt source anonymous technique as privacy preserving scheme and present a novel scheme for healthcare data collection and mining in this paper. Our scheme collects data from all EHR systems without any information loss and stores at a single central data mining server, also ensuring privacy is preserved. Central data mining server helps to analyze the collected data with different data mining techniques (Association rule mining, Classification, Clustering, etc.) without the involvement of EHR systems. Our scheme is collusion resilient against central data mining server and EHR systems. Theoretical and experimental analysis show the efficiency of our scheme in terms of computation and communication cost. The experimental results using Heart disease dataset show the advantage to EHR systems using the proposed approach in terms of disease prediction accuracy.

Car manufacturing sector represents a major focus in the development of the automotive industry. In this research paper, a proposed data mining application for the automotive manufacturing sector is explained and tested. The dataset was retrieved from the machine learning repository at the University of California, Irvine. This research paper aims to create a more reliable classifier for future object classification. Classification is an important technique in data mining. It is a supervised learning process that involves classifying an object into one of the predefined classes based on its attributes. In this paper, we use a large database containing 7 attributes and 1,728 instances. We compare the results of a simple classification technique (using the J48 decision tree inference algorithm and MONK) with results based on different parameters using WEKA (Waikato Environment Knowledge Analysis), a data mining tool. The results of the experiment show a comparison between three algorithms to see which is the best and least error-prone algorithm. The physical characteristics of a car viz . Engine location ,price, how many doors, stroke, city fuel consumption, and other factors determine a vehicle's performance. Therefore, developing such a classification, although a huge undertaking, is absolutely essential in the car industry. Machine learning techniques can help integrate computer-based systems to predict vehicle quality and improve system efficiency. Classification models were trained using 214 datasets. The predicted values of the classifiers were evaluated using 10-fold cross-validation, and the results were compared. Medical diagnosis is a most important problem in medical data mining. The possible errors of a physician can reduce with the help of data mining techniques. The goal of this chapter is to analyze and compare predictive data mining techniques in the medical diagnosis. To this purpose, various data mining techniques such as decision tree, neural networks, support vector machine, and lazy modelling are considered. Results show data mining techniques can considerably help a physician.

Association rules provide an important clue on how hidden knowledge and patterns can be extracted and the attributes extracted are associated when big data is mined by means of a particular data mining algorithm. The context of HEIs, where big data mining is uncommon, there is a need to know how association rules could be utilized to discover hidden knowledge and forecast student performance based on time-to-degree and cumulative grade point average (CGPA) and also make decisions. This research has demonstrated this by taking the example of the dataset of 337 graduated students of a university in Bahrain belonging to the Bachelor's degree in Accounting and Finance. Two types of data mining concepts were applied, regression and a priori algorithm. Regression results showed that there is a statistically substantial link between time-to-degree and course-difficulty and not CGPA. Similarly, association rules showed the link between time-to-degree, course-taking pattern, no. of courses and course-difficulty pattern but not CGPA. The association rules generated provided the basis to predict optimum time-to-degree by controlling the no. of courses, course-taking pattern, and course-taking difficulty. The findings of this research provide an important window of opportunity for HEIs to enhance student performance using data mining techniques. This investigation has contributed theoretically showing the application of data mining theory using apriori algorithm and regression, for HEI big data mining where student factors and organizational factors are said to be fairly different from that of the HEIs where research on big data is seen to be a well-known activity.

Pattern mining algorithms for data streams using itemset

Knowledge discovery in databases (KDD) and data mining represent very important tools for processing and analysing data in large databases. The combination of powerful KDD and data mining techniques and sophisticated resources of object-oriented database systems brings even more considerable results. These emerging tools and techniques require a powerful data mining query language serving as an interface between applications and data mining tools. This motivates us to design an object-oriented data mining query language for mining different kinds of knowledge from object-oriented databases.
