Privacy preserving rule-based classifier using modified artificial bee colony algorithm

Privacy preserving data mining is a substantial research area that aims at protecting the privacy of individuals while enabling to perform data mining techniques. In this study, we propose a secure protocol that fulfils the privacy restriction by combining homomorphic encryption with differential privacy and integrate this protocol into Holte’s One Rule which is a simple, but accurate and efficient classification algorithm. The proposed method allows a researcher to get the answers of his/her queries to build One Rule classifier by processing the encrypted training dataset under Paillier’s cryptosystem and also applies differential privacy to minimize the privacy leakage of individuals as much as possible in this training dataset. Therefore, both of security and privacy of the individuals in the training dataset for classification are provided thanks to our proposed method; since neither the parties, nor the researcher attain any information about the individuals in the database. Besides the One Rule classifier, we apply our proposed privacy preservation model to Naïve Bayes classification algorithm for the performance comparison, and show the efficiency of the proposed method through experiments on real data from UCI repository.

The trends of data mining on healthcare data for improving medical services have increased because of the electronic healthcare record(EHR) system, which collects a massive amount of data on a daily basis. In the current scenario, hospital maintains its EHR system and stores the detailed information of patients. Data mining for healthcare improvement requires the data from all the EHR systems located at a different location to be stored at the central data mining server. Collection of healthcare data at some untrusted central data mining server raises privacy threats. Healthcare data contains patients’ private information and sharing this information for data mining creates privacy issues. Most of the previous research either focused on k-anonymity technique which causes information loss and decreases data mining accuracy or privacy preserving data mining which is focused on only specific data mining technique. We adopt source anonymous technique as privacy preserving scheme and present a novel scheme for healthcare data collection and mining in this paper. Our scheme collects data from all EHR systems without any information loss and stores at a single central data mining server, also ensuring privacy is preserved. Central data mining server helps to analyze the collected data with different data mining techniques (Association rule mining, Classification, Clustering, etc.) without the involvement of EHR systems. Our scheme is collusion resilient against central data mining server and EHR systems. Theoretical and experimental analysis show the efficiency of our scheme in terms of computation and communication cost. The experimental results using Heart disease dataset show the advantage to EHR systems using the proposed approach in terms of disease prediction accuracy.

Swarm intelligence is briefly defined as the collective behavior of decentralized and self-organized swarms. Self-organization and labor division are the two key components of swarm intelligence. Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm is one of the most recent swarm intelligence-based algorithms. The behavior of bees in ABC algorithm satisfies the self-organization features, but there is no specific labor division mechanism in ABC algorithm. In this work, we propose an improved ABC algorithm called labor division artificial bee colony (LDABC) algorithm by incorporating the labor division mechanism into ABC algorithm, which is achieved by individual specialization and role plasticity. We specify three different search methods for employed bees, onlooker bees and scout bees to realize individual specialization, these search methods are related to food source quality, enable bees to maximize exploitation of food source. Role plasticity is achieved by combining with cellular automata, where the roles of bees are not static but vary with their surrounding environment, enable bees not to limit to one search method. The different search modes and the flexibility of the search behaviors make our algorithm achieve a better balance between exploration and exploitation. The experimental results tested on 13 benchmark functions and CEC-2013 test functions demonstrate a competitive performance.

The artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm is an important branch of evolutionary algorithms and has been shown to be competitive with other algorithms for solving optimisation problems. However, there are always some insufficiencies in ABC algorithm such as lower convergence speed and easily get trapped in the local optima. To increase depth search capabilities of onlooker bees and ensure scout bees do not discard the current optimal solution, we proposed a modified ABC algorithm (denoted as ORABC) based on the optimisation strategy and retained strategy of the best individual in this paper. Compared with ABC algorithm, ABC* (added retained strategy to ABC) and ORABC algorithm, experiments are conducted on a set of numerical benchmark functions. The numerical simulation results demonstrate that ORABC algorithm improves the convergence characteristics of ABC algorithm and provides very remarkable performance in solving complex numerical optimisation problems compared to original algorithm.

Digitalization of data has proven its competent edge in the present digital era, leading to aggregation of mass amounts of data. This segregated data is made expendable by discovering interesting patterns made possible by “Data Mining”. Setting apart its perks, it possesses a discernible intimidation of outpouring personal information of data owners to anonymous resources. As always privacy is a prime issue of concern, On the other hand trading absolute privacy for loss of certainty of a query may not produce efficient patterns like in in-depth analysis of the source data sets. To maintain a balance among the above mentioned areas of interest “Privacy Preserving Data Mining (PPDM) using various privacy techniques is employed. The proposed work potentiates the working of privacy protection technique namely differential privacy using privacy parameter ε with heterogeneous adaptable method. In addition, this framework provides a basis for working with the inverse laplacian data distortion for better privacy protection in an interactive query model.

A number of privacy preserving techniques have been proposed recently in data mining. In this paper, we provide a review of the state-of-the-art methods for privacy preserving data mining. and discuss methods for randomization, secure multipart computation, and so on. We also make a classification for the privacy preserving data mining technologies, and analyze some works in this field, such as data distortion method for achieving privacy preserving association rule mining. Detailed evaluation criteria of privacy preserving algorithm were illustrated, which include algorithm performance, data utility, and privacy protection degree. Finally, the development of privacy preserving data mining for further directions is given.

With the rapid development of computer technology and the popularity of the network, database scale, scope and depth of the constantly expanding, which has accumulated vast amounts of different forms of stored data. The use of data mining technology can access valuable information from a lot of data. Privacy preserving has been one of the greater concerns in data mining. Privacy preserving data mining has a rapid development in a short year. But it still faces many challenges in the future. A number of methods and techniques have been developed for privacy preserving data mining. This paper analyzed the representative techniques for privacy preservation. Finally the present problems and directions for future research are discussed.

Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm inspired by the complex search and foraging behaviors of real honey bees is one of the most promising implementations of the Swarm Intelligence- (SI-) based optimization algorithms. Due to its robust and phase-divided structure, the ABC algorithm has been successfully applied to different types of optimization problems. However, some assumptions that are made with the purpose of reducing implementation difficulties about the sophisticated behaviours of employed, onlooker, and scout bees still require changes with the more literal procedures. In this study, the ABC algorithm and its well-known variants are powered by adding a new control mechanism in which the decision-making process of the employed bees managing transitions to the dance area is modeled. Experimental studies with different types of problems and analysis about the parallelization showed that the newly proposed approach significantly improved the qualities of the final solutions and convergence characteristics compared to the standard implementations of the ABC algorithms.

This article describes how privacy preserving data mining has become one of the most important and interesting research directions in data mining. With the help of data mining techniques, people can extract hidden information and discover patterns and relationships between the data items. In most of the situations, the extracted knowledge contains sensitive information about individuals and organizations. Moreover, this sensitive information can be misused for various purposes which violate the individual's privacy. Association rules frequently predetermine significant target marketing information about a business. Significant association rules provide knowledge to the data miner as they effectively summarize the data, while uncovering any hidden relations among items that hold in the data. Association rule hiding techniques are used for protecting the knowledge extracted by the sensitive association rules during the process of association rule mining. Association rule hiding refers to the process of modifying the original database in such a way that certain sensitive association rules disappear without seriously affecting the data and the non-sensitive rules. In this article, two new hiding techniques are proposed namely hiding technique based on genetic algorithm (HGA) and dummy items creation (DIC) technique. Hiding technique based on genetic algorithm is used for hiding sensitive association rules and the dummy items creation technique hides the sensitive rules as well as it creates dummy items for the modified sensitive items. Experimental results show the performance of the proposed techniques.

Problem of finding frequent patterns has long been studied because it is very essential to data mining tasks such as association rule analysis, clustering, and classification analysis. Privacy preserving data mining is another important issue for this domain since most users do not want their private information to leak out. In this paper, we proposed an efficient approach for mining maximal frequent patterns from a large transactional database with privacy preserving capability. As for privacy preserving, we utilized prime number based data transformation method. We also developed a noble algorithm for mining maximal frequent patterns based on lattice structure. Extensive performance analysis shows the effectiveness of our approach.

The Economic Load Dispatch (ELD) is considered to minimize the only fuel cost in power system planning and operation. Due to environmental issues, the emission amount released by thermal power generation should be considered in minimizing the total cost generation as well. This make the power dispatch problem become multi-objective problem that called Economic and Emission Load Dispatch (EELD). This paper investigates the performances of Artificial Bee colony (ABC) algorithm for determining optimal solution for EELD problem. In this paper, the EELD problem is formulated as a single objective problem by taking minimization of total cost and emission level as separated objective. The cost characteristic of thermal generator considered the effect of opening and closing of the valve for practical application. The ABC algorithm has been tested on standard test systems which is 10-generating unit test system in order to validate the effectiveness of proposed ABC algorithm. The results obtained have been compared with reported result by other methods in literature. From the result, it found that ABC algorithm is better than other methods for minimizing fuel cost of thermal power generation and obtained comparative results in reducing the emission level.
