Abstract

Today, we can create beautiful deep-sky images without capturing a single photon of our own. Some professional observatories put their data online and allow people to access it for free. So all we need to do in order to create our own professional-quality deep-sky images is download this freely available data and then process it for ourselves. However, this puts us in a very difficult position. Why should we spend our hard-earned money and put in hundreds of hours of blood, sweat and tears to get our own imaging system together, if we can produce the pretty pictures without collecting the photons ourselves? After reading this chapter, a few people who had initially thought about building their own imaging system, will be able to bypass this step and simply use freely-available professional data. They would be showing a great deal more common sense than I have.
