The research and development of metaheuristic methods are critical issues in computer science. In the past decade, metaheuristic algorithms have been used in many engineering applications such as optimization of engineering problems, telecommunications, information security, and image processing. Many metaheuristic algorithms such as particle swarm optimization (PSO), ant colony optimization (ACO), and genetic algorithm (GA) are recently becoming very popular.There are many studies conducted in the literature on the comparison of PSO with other metaheuristic algorithms. In this chapter, various studies carried out between the years of 2010 and 2020 about the comparison of PSO with the other metaheuristic algorithms will be examined. The metaheuristic algorithms to be considered are simulated annealing (SA), genetic algorithm (GA), differential evolution (DE), ant colony optimization (ACO), artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm, particle swarm optimization (PSO), tabu search (TS), harmony search (HS), firefly algorithm (FF), cuckoo search (CS), bat-inspired algorithm (BA), water wave optimization (WWO), clonal selection algorithm (CLONALG), chemical reaction optimization (CRO), sine cosine algorithm (SCA), glowworm swarm optimization (GSO), and grey wolf optimizer (GWO). This study aims to evaluate and analyze the covered papers according to several criteria such as (a) rates of studies according to publishing years, (b) the metaheuristic algorithms that are compared to PSO, (c) performance evaluation of compared algorithms, (d) the metaheuristic algorithms with their inspirational approaches and their initial proposed studies and years, (e) the field of subjects where the algorithms are applied in the reviewed studies, and (f) used databases in the examined studies.This study is a comprehensive literature review of the comparison of PSO with the most popular metaheuristic algorithms. The intention of this review is to be useful for researchers who want to conduct a survey on this area of the subject as this chapter will cover the essential and helpful analysis of the related research.

Each university has different regulations in making lecture schedule according to the conditions of respective institution. In this study, regulation on lecture scheduling used the maximum limit of credits of lecturer in a day, in which if exceeds the maximum limit, then the schedule of course will be moved on another day. This study attempts to optimize the schedule preparation in each semester by considering the maximum limit of credits of a lecturer in a day. Lecture scheduling is a combination of space, time, and resources. It is categorized into combinatorial optimization group. There are two methods for solving the combinatorial optimization problems, i.e. exact and approximation method. The approximation method consists of two types, heuristics and metaheuristics. The algorithm metaheuristics categories include genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), ant colony optimization (ACO), bee colony optimization (BCO), simulated annealing, and so on. This paper employed metaheuristics approach. Research on the preparation of lecture scheduling using ACO algorithm has been conducted and proven to be able to prepare the lecture scheduling. The ACO algorithm has numbers of parameters that in solving issues, one must manually set a number of parameters by using the Design of Experiments (DoE) tool, which takes time to solve the optimization problem. Hence, to solve the issue, an automated parameter optimization is required. PSO algorithm has fewer parameters compared to the ACO. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is a hybrid between PSO and ACO in preparing lecture scheduling.

<p><strong>Context and relevance.</strong>The traveling salesman problem (TSP) is one of the key NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems with wide applications in logistics, transportation planning, and other fields. Exact methods for solving TSP become inefficient as the problem dimension increases, making the use of metaheuristic methods such as simulated annealing (SA), ant colony optimization (ACO), and particle swarm optimization (PSO) relevant. <strong>Objective. </strong>To conduct a comparative analysis of the effectiveness of SA, ACO and PSO for solving the traveling salesman problem with 100 points, to evaluate their convergence and to identify the optimal parameters. <strong>Hypothesis. </strong>The ant algorithm, due to the pheromone trail mechanism, will provide higher accuracy of solutions compared to SA and PSO, but will require more computational resources. <strong>Methods and materials. </strong>The study conducted computational experiments with varying parameters of each algorithm. For SA, the initial temperature and cooling coefficient were analyzed, for ACO, the influence of pheromones and distances, for PSO, the cognitive and social coefficients. <strong>Results. </strong>ACO showed the best results, finding a route with a length of 9.23, demonstrating high efficiency for medium-sized problems. PSO took an intermediate position with a route length of 32.64, making it suitable for moderately complex problems. SA was the least effective, with a route length of 45.2, which limits its use for complex routing networks. <strong>Conclusions. </strong>The ant algorithm demonstrated the greatest efficiency due to the balance between exploring the solution space and exploiting the found routes, which is especially important for maritime Arctic logistics, where sustainable route optimization is required under high uncertainty. PSO showed good convergence, but it is inferior to ACO in terms of accuracy. SA, despite its simplicity, is less effective for high-dimensional problems. The obtained results are of particular practical value for route optimization in the Arctic region, where traditional methods often prove to be ineffective.</p>

Detecting high-order single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) interactions is of great importance for the discovery of pathogenic causes of human complex diseases. However, a considerable computing challenge exists in analyzing each SNP combination at a genome-wide scale. Swarm intelligence search (SIS) is an effective and efficient method for solving NP-hard problems and has been extensively researched for detecting high-order SNP interactions. In this review, we first analyze the strengths and limitations of existing methods such as exhaustive search using cluster computing and parallel computing, stochastic search and high-performance computing. Then, SIS algorithms for the detection of high-order SNP interactions are introduced in detail. The algorithms discussed are the genetic algorithm (GA), ant colony optimization (ACO), harmony search (HS), particle swarm optimization (PSO), differential evolution (DE), cuckoo search (CS), fish swarm (FS) and artificial bee colony (ABC). Finally, we discuss the characteristics and limitations of the involved methods and provide several suggestions for improving SIS algorithms to detect high-order SNP interactions.

Design-driven harmony search (DDHS) in steel frame optimization

Genetic Algorithms (GA), Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Artificial Bee Colonies (ABC) are some vital nature inspired computing (NIC) techniques. These approaches have been used in early prophecy of various diseases. This article analyzes the efficacy of various NIC techniques in diagnosing diverse critical human disorders. It is observed that GA, ACO, PSO and ABC have been successfully used in early diagnosis of different diseases. As compared to ACO, PSO and ABC algorithms, GA has been extensively used in diagnosis of ecology, cardiology and endocrinologist. In addition, from the last six years of research, it has been observed that the accuracy accomplished using GA, ACO, PSO and ABC in the early diagnosis of cancer, diabetes and cardio problems lies between 73.5%-99.7%, 70%-99.2%, 80%-98% and 76.4% to 99.98% respectively. Furthermore, ACO, PSO and ABC are found to be best suited in diagnosing lung, prostate and breast cancer respectively. Moreover, the hybrid use of NIC techniques produces better results as compared to their individual use.

Cuckoo search optimization (CSO) algorithm, a recently proposed metaheuristic, has shown promising results in various problem domains. Results from recent studies show that engineering and tuning discrete cuckoo search optimization’ parameters is a daunting task. In this paper, an attempt to enhance the performance of the CSO algorithm in solving discrete combinatorial optimization problems is presented. Performance of the discrete modified CSO algorithm is compared with genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), hybrid of GA/PSO, and simulated annealing. In addition, a memetic algorithm (MA) that combines discrete modified CSO and tabu search is proposed. Results show that the proposed improvements help in enhancing the performance of the original algorithm. As a test case, the NP-hard problem of buffer minimization in CMOL (CMOS[Formula: see text]+[Formula: see text]nanowire[Formula: see text]+[Formula: see text]MOLecules) circuits is addressed. The performance of the proposed implementation of CSO algorithm is compared with other heuristics.

Evolutionary techniques in optimizing machining parameters: Review and recent applications (2007–2011)

Weapon-Target Assignment (WTA) problems are to find a proper assignment of weapons to targets with the objective of minimizing the expected damage of own-force asset. In this paper, a novel hybrid algorithm of ant colony optimization (ACO) and genetic algorithm is proposed to solve WTA problems. The proposed algorithm is to enhance the search performance of genetic algorithms by embedded ACO so as to have locally optimal offspring. This algorithm is successfully applied to WTA problems. From our simulations for those tested problems, the proposed algorithm has the best performance when compared to other existing search algorithms.

Inspired by the behavior of ants seeking the shortest path between their nest and a food source, ant colony optimization (ACO) is the most popular technique to effectively solve combinatorial optimization problems. Combinatorial optimization is a branch of optimization which is concerned with the optimization of functions with discrete decision variables. Finding optimum size of a PV/wind/battery hybrid system belongs to combinatorial optimization problems with the aim of determining three discrete decision variables, namely, number of PV panels, wind turbines and batteries. This paper proposes ACO to optimally size a PV/wind/battery hybrid system for having a reliable system. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, ACO performance is compared with that of two other well-known metaheuristic algorithms, namely, harmony search (HS) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). It is observed that ACO yields more promising results than the other studied methodologies

The persistent growth of nonlinear loads connected to the power systems has resulted in numerous power quality problems. One of the main problems is the generated current harmonics, which distort the sinusoidal source current waveform. Over the years, these harmonics have been mitigated using passive power filters, active power filter, and hybrid filters. Many active filters configurations have been utilized including the switched capacitor filters, which are less bulky, less expensive and use lower switching frequency than other active filters. In this paper, the switched capacitor filter is employed to alleviate the total harmonic distortion of the source current using Nature-inspired Metaheuristic Algorithms; Ant Colony Optimization, Genetic Algorithm and particle swarm optimization, to obtain the optimum performance.

The excellent feature set or feature combination of cotton foreign fibers is great significant to improve the performance of machine-vision-based recognition system of cotton foreign fibers. To find the excellent feature sets of foreign fibers, in this paper presents three metaheuristic-based feature selection approaches for cotton foreign fibers recognition, which are particle swarm optimization, ant colony optimization and genetic algorithm, respectively. The k-nearest neighbor classifier and support vector machine classifier with k-fold cross validation are used to evaluate the quality of feature subset and identify the cotton foreign fibers. The results show that the metaheuristic-based feature selection methods can efficiently find the optimal feature sets consisting of a few features. It is highly significant to improve the performance of recognition system for cotton foreign fibers.
