Project Management Tools and Techniques for Success

Modern technologies and methodologies for project management have been considered. It is argued that project management is a complex process that encompasses various stages from initiation to completion and involves the use of diverse methodologies, tools, and approaches to achieve goals, effectively utilize resources, and ensure high-quality results. From the author's perspective, project management methodology should be viewed as a comprehensive approach that defines general principles, processes, rules, and standards to be followed in managing a project. A project management technique is a specific method or process used to accomplish a particular task or phase within the methodology. Techniques can be part of a methodology or applied separately. Project management tools are regarded as specific means or technologies used to support and automate project management processes. A comparative analysis of the main project management methodologies has been conducted, proposing to classify them into four groups: traditional (Waterfall model), agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban, Extreme Programming - XP), hybrid (Scrumban, Agile-Waterfall Hybrid), methodologies for managing large projects (PRINCE2 – Projects In Controlled Environments, PMI’s PMBOK – Project Management Body of Knowledge) and Lean methodologies (Lean Project Management). This division is arbitrary, but it allows us to systematize the main project management tools and techniques according to the complexity and content of the tasks performed. It is proven that each of the examined management methodologies has its own characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages, which should be taken into account when choosing an approach to project management. The methodology determines the approach to project implementation: planning work processes, interaction with stakeholders, risk management, relevant tools, and so on. The selection of a specific methodology and appropriate tools depends on the specifics and complexity of the project, the field of activity, stakeholder requirements, team size, and other factors.

Delays and disruption are a common issue in both community and personal building programs The problem exists all throughout the world, but it is particularly prevalent in Iraq, where millions of dollars are squandered each time as a outcome. Delays and interruptions may have serious consequences not just for Iraq's construction plans, but also for the country's economic and social status. While numerous studies have been conducted to investigate the factors driving delays and disruption in Iraqi construction projects, slight consideration has been given to by what means project management implements and approaches have affected the occurrence of project delays and disruption. After analyzing the crucial reasons for delays and instability in public and private construction projects in Iraq, this paper aims to improve the recording and recommendations using Project Supervision concepts. A thorough investigation was conducted to identify the critical factors that are causing delays and disruptions in construction projects in Iraq's public and private sectors and present project management application procedures in order to establish recommendations to successfully reduce work disruptions and instability in Iraq This paper identifies the top crucial factors contributing to construction project delays and disruptions in Iraq. It further identifies project management Tools and techniques that, when used appropriately, have the potential to address the major causes of delays and interruptions. Following that, a new set of guidelines for applying Project Management methodologies and strategies to address the identified delay and disruption issues is provided, with the objective of aiding practitioners in minimizing the possibility for construction delays and interruption in Iraqi projects.

The study investigates the importance of project management tools and techniques (PMTTs) in the success of information communication technology (ICT) projects in the Department of Social Development (DSD) in South Africa. It identifies the challenges of using PMTTs in ICT projects and suggests ways to effectively incorporate PMTTs in ICT project success. The non-probability purposive sampling method was used to identify 16 officials and stakeholders in ICT project management, whose responses to were thematically analysed. The study found that the most-used PMTTs for delivering ICT projects were the Agile project management methodology, collaboration tools like email systems and the Microsoft Teams platform, work breakdown structures, project dashboards, the Waterfall model, the Scrum framework, and cost-benefit analysis. Using PMTTs in project execution has many benefits, including increased project success probability, enhanced project predictability, boosted stakeholder confidence, heightened efficiency, improved communication, and the formalisation of the project methodology. The study identified a range of implementation challenges, including a lack of enforcement or inadequate implementation of the tools, a dearth of general expertise in the usage of specialised tools, misalignment of departmental and ICT strategies, lack of stakeholder participation, non-adherence to project governance, lack of continued training, inconsistencies with reporting, resource incapacitation, poor planning, and changes in scope by business users. To bolster PMTTs’ capacity to drive ICT projects in the DSD, the study recommends enforcing the use of all PMTTs, recruiting and retaining talent, involving all stakeholders, providing advanced training to all users (including management and not just ICT officials), and strengthening ICT governance.

Purpose Project management techniques for digital initiatives must shift with the transformation of content from analog to digital, from singular projects to mass-digitization and large-scale digital preservation. How are project management methods employed across digital practices, from digitization, to online access, to preservation? How can project management methods evolve to create a collaborative workflow across collection and service areas of librarianship, centered on digital stewardship? Methodology/approach Solutions for these questions are illustrated in an explanation of the workflows implemented at the University of Maryland, College Park Libraries and reflected upon in a case study of a recent digital initiative. Findings Centered on the efforts of two departments in the Libraries’ Digital Systems and Stewardship division, this chapter outlines the origins, techniques, and integration of digital project management with a focus on Waterfall and Agile project management. Furthermore, the integration and transition of project management methodologies and tools between groups is emphasized, mirroring the transformation of analog media to digital formats and the requisite shifts in thinking such projects require. Originality/value These case studies are based on research across the profession and implementation at the University of Maryland, College Park Libraries. The local application of two established project management techniques, Waterfall and Agile, are summarized and compared. Though regularly employed in application development, applying Agile project management in libraries is a relatively new practice and has not been widely documented in library literature.

Relationship Management and the Management of Projects is a guide to successfully building and managing relationships as a project manager and in the project business. Relationship management is a core skill for any project business to develop capabilities and manage the interface with projects, providing guidance to project managers as they negotiate with business partners and coordinate between business functions. Whatever the structures and procedures an organization has and whatever the project management tools and techniques, they are only as good as the hands they are in. Yet relationship management, though a well-established discipline, is rarely applied to the process-driven world of project management. This book is a much-needed guide to the process of enhancing these skills to boost firm performance, team performance and develop collaborative practices. Hedley Smyth guides you through the processes of relationship management examining the theory and practice. This book highlights the range of options available to further develop current practices to ensure a successful relationship management in all stages of a project’s lifecycle. Relationship Management and the Management of Projects is valuable reading for all students and specialists in project management, as well as project managers in business, management, the built environment, or indeed any industry.

Purpose The first part of the chapter discusses the premise that “wearing many hats” impedes a professional’s ability to get successful project results in a library setting. Offering their own experience as an example, the authors explore the issues that led to the implementation of project manager as a full-time position at Hesburgh Libraries. Part two of the chapter offers practical suggestions for incorporating a project management office (PMO) into a library setting. It includes the definition of the virtual PMO model, how this model fits into the organizational structure, and why this model might be preferred in a library environment. It includes descriptions of basic project management tools, techniques, and methods as well as graphic representation of division and overlap of responsibilities. Methodology/approach The methodology of this chapter is based on a review of the literature as well as a description of the authors’ experience with implementing project management at their institution. Findings Project management is a profession that requires dedicated personnel and resources. Actively involved project sponsors and dedicated project managers play a critical role in assuring project success. Basic project management tools, techniques, and approaches can be successfully implemented in libraries. Originality/value Full-time project management in libraries is still a novel concept. Readers will benefit from Hesburgh Libraries’ implementation of new methodology and learn about tools and approaches to introduce project management in their organizations.

Current practice in project management — an empirical study

The objective of this investigation was to harness and efficiently utilize the project management skills possessed by students having industry work experience. An innovative concept was introduced to the course project of the computer-aided engineering course taught at Wichita State University. As per this concept, those enrolled students that had prior project management skills from the industry were assigned as team leaders to different project teams. The idea behind this concept was to introduce industry standard project management skills and techniques to all the students. The project guidelines were laid out clearly and each team knew what was expected of them. The project was driven by the team leader in accordance with the project management techniques followed in the industry. A survey conducted after the completion of the course project points to evidence that 78% of the students benefitted from this innovative concept and 81% of the students reported that they learned something new from this concept. In other words, the students learned Project Management techniques as a result of this innovative concept. Encouraged by the results, it is intended to continue this initiative when teaching courses with term projects. It is also intended to continuously keep improving this process to make it more beneficial for the students both from an academic and industry perspective.

Earned readiness management for scheduling, monitoring and evaluating the development of complex product systems

Purpose The aim of this paper is to map and scope the relationship between the literature on project management and public management to progress closer engagement between the two fields. The paper develops a framework outlining a set of conceptual linkages between the two literatures and outlines a research agenda to further the contribution of future scholarship. Design/methodology/approach A scoping literature review was conducted encompassing papers informing the interplay between project management and public management, identifying a set of connection points between shared thematic areas. Findings Our findings include the identification of conceptual connectors, defined as correspondences between thematic areas in the two fields of project management and public management, whereby theories and notions drawn from one can be adapted and applied to the other field. We have identified the following thematic areas in the respective fields as connectors: project stakeholder management AND partnership collaboration and multi-agency working; Project management levels (portfolio, programme and project) AND public policy implementation; Project innovation AND public innovation; Project leadership AND public leadership. We also examine how the ways in which the notion of time is conceptualized in project management can inform analyses in public management as another key connector point. The paper also provides an overview of the relationships between these two fields of scholarly inquiry; it is noticed that, while there is a longstanding relationship between them, recent critical approaches provide increased traction to integrate project management and public management scholarship. Research limitations/implications The paper is theoretical-conceptual in nature, from which mainly derive its limitations and implications: the paper can guide, and it would benefit of, the development of empirical research on the use of project management logics and techniques in the field of public management. Practical implications The article can provide valuable guidance for public managers/managers of public services for deepening and bettering the awareness and use of project management logics and techniques for tackling complex public affairs problems. Social implications The article aims at discussing and fostering awareness about a social-anthropological understanding of project management in the field of public sector and public services management, by developing a set of interconnections between the two fields. Originality/value This article makes three main contributions. First, it identifies conceptual connections between the fields of project management and public management, thereby further informing the literature in public management on change management and reform. Second, the study provides a valuable addition to public management scholarship by identifying the importance of the critical project management school for furthering public management theory and research. Finally, the study assists scholarship by identifying three phases between the project management and public management literature: a first phase characterized by mutual misunderstanding; a second phase in which the development of critical project management has enabled selective application of project management concepts to the field of public management; and a third and current phase which sees closer engagement between the two fields. The phases indicate project management is not a static technical discipline, but one increasingly informed by critical theories. The conceptual connections between the fields of project management and public management identified in this paper, and the research agenda whose contours are outlined, can enable progressing knowledge in a range of thematic areas in public management.

The major concern in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry is time, cost, and quality. The design for industrial building project usually complex, particularly in a field of mechanical and piping process due to the large involvement of project stakeholders. The case company, which is the specialist supplier of industrial piping solution in Thailand, reported the issue of redesigns regarding to their poor project management of conceptual design process in construction project that effect to their work performance and customer satisfaction. Thus, the purpose of this study was to improve the process of conceptual design using project management concept to reduce the number of redesign in the conceptual design phase for storm drainage design projects. The new conceptual design process was introduced in 4 stages-Initialization, Identification, Translation, and Specification. These stages were clearly defined their input, process (with project management plans, tools and techniques such as checklist, tree diagram, 3D model system and expert judgment), and output.

This was validated with 30 pilot projects of storm drainage design in factories and warehouses. The results revealed that, the total number of redesign was reduced from 102 to 24 under the satisfied of company?s KPI. In addition, the total cost of redesign was decreased form THB 1,326,000 to THB 31,200. Furthermore, the total design time from the start to finish the specification output was reduced from 327 days to 212 days. Therefore, the proposed solution was proved to be practical and fully implemented by the company.

The application of Project Management (PM) tools and techniques in public sector is gradually becoming an important issue indeveloping economies, especially in a new development country like Latvia where projects of different size and structures are undertaken. The paper examined the application of the project management practice in public sector in Latvia. Public sector projectmanagement in Latvia become popular in recent years as there is different type of public funding sources available. The paperdescribes the public sector project management practice in Latvia. Study shows that public sector project maturity level is low andshould be improved. Research period covers the time period from January 2013 – March 2013.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are increasingly dealing with international projects and distributed (sometimes even virtual) teams. Consequently, they are looking for project management (PM) tools which fit their respective needs regarding communication and collaboration. Unfortunately, the majority of the PM software available in the market seems to be oversized for this purpose. Instead most project managers are requesting smart solutions that allow quick implementation without any significant organisational or technical change.
Within the research project InterComp SME 2.0 we combine theoretical research and real business to develop hands-on solutions for SMEs. This paper describes an effective approach for a â??PM Toolboxâ? that allows finding the right project tool for a specific project need. The toolbox has been developed in due consideration of user stories gained from business practice, a more detailed SME business survey, a theoretical PM meta model and a market of PM tools.
Since the business survey revealed that the readiness to use and test a â??toolboxâ? is highly dependent on the type of user and his or her technical background, we designed the system based on use cases and user typology. As a result, we suggest a framework of open, freely available, easy-to-install, single and multi purpose PM software tools which can be selected solely on a need basis. With this free platform we want to guide practitioners through the tool jungle with the potential to grow into a lively community.

This chapter reviews and provides examples of elements and techniques of project management. In the good old days, when conception to completion was a few months, the process of project management was relatively informal. However, with the increasing complexity and cost of projects, many routinely costing millions and some costing billions, the process has become more formalized. This chapter discusses the roles of the client, the sponsor, the leader, the manager and the team member. In addition, the three key parameters of project management, quality, cost and schedule, are defined and discussed. Finally, various project management methodologies and tools, such as work breakdown structures, Gantt charts and milestones, are presented.
