Promoting Critical Thinking Ability for High School Students through Debating Activities

This study aims to determine the distribution of higher-order mathematical thinking skills of students of state senior high schools in Tasikmalaya City in the academic year 2018/2019, to find out whether there is a relationship between mathematical critical thinking abilities with students' mathematical creative thinking skills High School in Tasikmalaya City 2018/2019 academic year. This research is a type of descriptive research using quantitative descriptive methods. The population in this study were all students of Tasikmalaya City Senior High School in class X, class XI, and class XII, ranging in age from 16-18 years. The sampling technique in this study uses a probability sampling technique that is Proportionate Stratified Random Sampling, by taking 2 classes each school. The research instrument used in this study was a matter of high-level mathematical thinking ability tests which are slices of the cognitive dimension of Bloom's Taxonomy with the 2013 Curriculum Dimension dimension consisting of questions of critical and creative thinking skills. The results showed that the distribution of mathematical thinking ability levels in high school students in the City of Tasikmalaya academic year 2018/2019 as follows: a) mathematical HOTS ability with a very good category was obtained by 2 Schools or 20% of all High School Schools in Tasikmalaya City, the ability Mathematical HOTS with the good category is obtained by 7 Schools or 70% of all High Schools in Tasikmalaya City, Mathematical HOTS ability with a pretty good category is obtained by 1 School, namely SMAN J or 10% of all Public High Schools in Tasikmalaya City. There is a significant relationship between students' mathematical critical thinking skills with the mathematical creative thinking abilities of high school students in the City of Tasikmalaya 2018/2019 academic year. with the degree of correlation obtained a correlation coefficient of 0.283 or are in a low category. The background of this research was that the mathematical critical thinking ability of the students is still low. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to find out the misconceptions or difficulties of students in each indicator of mathematical critical thinking ability of high school students that learned Brain Based Learning (BBL) with material in the Three Dimensions. This reseacrh used a qualitative approach with the descriptive method. The subjects in this study were the students of XII MIPA 5 class or first grade of senior high school in Subang Regency which was on a total of 32 students. The instrument of this study consisted of a test instrument of mathematical critical thinking ability and a non-test instrument in the form of an observation sheet. The results of this study shows that students almost have difficulty in carrying out tests of mathematical critical thinking skills based on the indicators tested. The indicators of critical thinking ability tested include providing simple clarification (elementary clarification), making conclusion (inference), determining strategies and tactics (strategies and tactics) to solve problems, and making further clarification (advances clarification).

Critical thinking and problem solving skills are very important for an individual to have in the current era. Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills can play a role in facing competition and challenges at the global level. The importance of critical thinking and problem solving skills means that an analysis of these ability profiles is needed. One of the chemical materials that is closely related to problems in everyday life and requires high-level thinking skills is solution chemistry. The aim of this research is to analyze the critical thinking and problem solving abilities of high school students in solution chemistry material. This research was conducted at three high school schools in Kudus involving 80 students. The instruments used are 10 essay tests for each of critical thinking and problem solving skills as well as interviews. The results of the analysis of critical thinking and problem solving skills in the three schools are on average in the poor category. It is hoped that this research can provide an overview for schools regarding the profile of students' critical thinking and problem solving abilities which can later be used as evaluation material for schools. The ability to think critically mathematically is one of the important abilities required in learning mathematics at the senior high school level in the independent curriculum. This ability is also one of the abilities demanded by the 21st century educational revolution. The importance of this ability is not in line with the mathematical critical thinking abilities of high school students, as was the problem of research in class X MIA at SMA Negeri 1 Natar Lampung Selatan. Given the importance of critical thinking skills, the purpose of this study was to determine the effect of using Everyone is a Teacher Here strategy on students' mathematical critical thinking abilities. This research is a quasi-experimental study with a population of all students of class X MIA even semester of SMA Negeri 1 Natar Lampung Selatan consisting of 8 classes with a total of 228 students, while 2 classes were taken, namely class X MIA 8 as the experimental class totaling 36, and class X MIA 7 as the control class, totaling 36. The sample was taken using a random sampling technique. Students' mathematical critical thinking ability is measured by a test in the form of a description of 5 questions which have previously been tested for validity and reliability. Testing the hypothesis in this study using the t test. From the results of hypothesis testing, it can be concluded that the use of the Everyone is a Teacher Here strategy can influence the mathematical critical thinking skills of class X MIA students at SMA Negeri 1 Natar Lampung.

This study aims to know mastery learning of students’ critical thinking ability with learning cycle 7E, determine whether the critical thinking ability of the students with learning cycle 7E is better than students’ critical thinking ability with expository model, and describe the students’ critical thinking phases based on the mathematical anxiety level. The method is mixed method with concurrent embedded. The population is VII grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Kebumen academic year 2016/2017. Subjects are determined by purposive sampling, selected two students from each level of mathematical anxiety. Data collection techniques include test, questionnaire, interview, and documentation. Quantitative data analysis techniques include mean test, proportion test, difference test of two means, difference test of two proportions and for qualitative data used Miles and Huberman model. The results show that: (1) students’ critical thinking ability with learning cycle 7E achieve mastery learning; (2) students’ critical thinking ability with learning cycle 7E is better than students’ critical thinking ability with expository model; (3) description of students’ critical thinking phases based on the mathematical anxiety level that is the lower the mathematical anxiety level, the subjects have been able to fulfil all of the indicators of clarification, assessment, inference, and strategies phases.

This research aimed to analyze student worksheet development based on Problem Based Learning model in topic of Probability for Senior High School students of grade X. The instruments which were used in this research were the validation sheet of student worksheet for math lecturer and teacher in order to fulfill the validity aspect, the student scoring sheet in order to fulfill the applicability aspect, and critical mathematic thinking ability test in order to fulfill the effectiveness aspect. The result of the research showed that the student worksheet which was based on Problem Based Learning model had fulfilled the requirements and appropriateness standard based on content, design, and language expert. The data analysis of t-test towards of critical thinking ability showed that the critical thinking ability of students with Problem Based Learning model worksheet was higher than the critical thinking ability of students without Problem Based Learning model worksheet.

Objective To investigate the current status of critical thinking ability and commu-nication ability of nursing students, therefore providing reference for teaching reform. Methods The Critical Thinking Scale translated and revised by Pro. Peng MeiZi of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Supportive Communication Scale (SCS) edited by Whetten and his colleague were used to investi-gate nursing students' levels of critical thinking and communication ability among 176 selected nursing students in our college, with method of Random Cluster Sampling. Descriptive analysis, single sample t-test, and two independent sample t-test were applied to the collected data with SPSS l7.0. Results ①The average score of critical thinking for the investigated college nursing students was (264.54±29.94). 72.73% of them got 210~280 points, in which three items: cognitive maturity (t=4.695, P=0.000), open mind (t=4.016, P=0.000), and intellectual curiosity (t=2.973, P=0.003) were greater than 40 points. And the differences were statistically significant; compared to different individual character-istics, being a student cadre (t=3.494, P=0.001) or not is of statistical significance. ②The total average score of communication ability (t=3.219, P=0.002) for college nursing students, as well as the score of providing effective negative feedback (t=6.790, P=0.000) and supportive communication (t=4.267, P=0.000) were significantly higher than median 3.00. And the differences were statistically significant. Conclusion In order to improve the critical thinking ability and interpersonal communication ability of nursing students, and educate the nursing students to adapt to society and complicated clinical nursing environment, it is necessary to reform the curriculum setting, curriculum design and teaching method. Research with the title Critical Thinking Ability of Class V Students in Social Science Learning at SD 2 BATUR. (Magdalena et al., 2021) This research aims to: Determine the critical thinking abilities of fifth grade students in learning science and science, identify factors that influence students' critical thinking abilities. and factors that influence the critical thinking abilities of class V students in science and science learning at SDN 2. This research will use a qualitative descriptive method. The subjects of this research are fifth grade students at SD 2 BATUR who are divided into three categories: High critical thinking ability, (Ilham & Hardiyanti, 2020) Medium critical thinking ability, Low critical thinking ability. Apart from these 3 categories, this research also uses Data collection techniques include observation, tests and interviews. The results of the research are 3 categories, including students with high critical thinking ability categories who can fulfill all critical thinking indicators. Students with moderate critical thinking ability categories are able to meet three indicators. Students with low critical thinking ability categories are only able to meet two indicators. This is also due to several factors that influence students' critical thinking ability, namely as follows: internal factors such as physical condition, anxiety, motivation, interaction and intellectual development and external factors related to outside individual in the form of a social environment.

This research is motivated by the existence of information related to the ability that students must possess today, namely collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creative thinking ability. The purpose of this study was to analyze in more detail the students' 4C abilities in solving science problems in terms of gender. This research includes quantitative research involving the first-semester of science students of FTK UIN Mataram who are taking introductory physics courses. The participants used in this study were 67 students, of which 32 were male students and 35 were female students. Collaboration and communication ability are measured during the lecture process using observation sheets. Critical thinking and creative thinking were measured using written test questions with a description of 10 questions each. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Rash modeling. The results showed that female students' collaboration and creative thinking abilities were better than male students. The results also showed that male students' communication and critical thinking ability were better than female students. In general, the 4C abilities possessed by female students and male students are not much different

Abstract: Math is able to train logical, analytical, systematic, critical, and creative thinking of students. Mathematical critical thinking ability is a capability that supports a variety of other mathematical thinking abilities. The students' critical thinking ability is also closely related to the personality or character of the student. Personality can affect how a person behaves, thinks, or interacts with around. The personality types discussed in this study are examined from four types of temperaments by the theories of Hippocrates and Galenus. This research includes the type of qualitative research that uses descriptive qualitative research methodology. This research will be conducted on the students of class XI MIA SMA Negeri 2 Kota Jambi. The thing described in this research is the students' mathematical critical thinking based on the dominant personality type on linear program solution. The results of personality tests of the instrument adapted from the patterns of personality by Lana Bateman found 40 dominant students that is the type of phlegmatic personality. Furthermore, based on sampling technique that is purposive sampling technique, 2 students are taken as research subjects ie phlegmatic students with the highest level of critical thinking ability called first phlegmatic students and phlegmatic students with the lowest level of critical thinking ability is called second phlegmatic student. From the results obtained can be concluded that the first phlegmatic students have the level of critical thinking skills are very critical and the second phlegmatic students have a critical level of critical thinking is not critical. This is inversely between the ability to think critically and the type of phlegmatic personality. The first phlegmatic student with enough phlegmatic category has critical critical mathematical thinking and the second phlegmatic student with very high / dominant phlegmatic category, critical critical thinking ability is not critical.Keywords: Mathematical Critical Thinking Ability, Four Temperament Types

Critical thinking ability is an important part of educational goals. It has higher complex processes, such as analyzing, synthesizing and evaluating, drawing conclusion and reflection. This study is aimed to know the critical thinking ability of students in learning static fluids of senior high school students. This research uses the descriptive method which its instruments based on the indicator of critical thinking ability developed according to Ennis. The population of this research is XIth grade science class Public Senior High School, SMA N 1, Sambungmacan, Sragen, Central Java. The static fluid teaching material is delivered using Problem Based Learning Model through class experiment. The results of this study shows that the average student of XIth science class have high critical thinking skills, particularly in the ability of providing simple explanation, build basic skill, and provide advanced explanation, but they do not have high enough in ability of drawing conclusion and strategic and tactical components of critical thinking ability in the study of static fluid teaching material. The average of students critical thinking ability is 72.94, with 27,94% of students are in a low category and 72,22% of students in the high category of critical thinking ability.

This reserach was conducted to improve conceptual understanding and critical thinking ability of fourth-semester students of the Science education study program, Bengkulu University by applying PBL. The research method used in this study is quasi experimental, which in its implementation uses single class or one group pretest-posttest design. The test question was the instrument used in this study. The findings showed that there was an improvement in students‘ conceptual understanding and critical thinking ability of students‘ since implementing problem-based learning models in environmental chemistry courses. This improvement can be seen from the results of the gain test for each class group on the test of conceptual understanding and critical thinking ability which are in the "medium" category, while the t-test results for concept understanding and critical thinking ability show a significant difference (0.000 <0.05). ), In other words, the implementation of the PBL learning influences the students‘ conceptual understanding and critical thinking ability. Further the implementation of the problem-based learning model in teaching and learning process presents problems with real conditions so that it can stimulate students to not only think and understand at the rote level but also interpret the problem. Quiet in-depth research on the implementation of problem-based learning models in learning is highly recommended to get more comprehensive results.

The ability to think critically is one of the highest levels of ability. Developing critical thinking skills in students is still considered important to be improved in schools so that students are able and accustomed to facing various problems around it. This study aims to analyze the critical thinking skills of junior high school students who are in excellent classes and regular classes. This research was conducted in Bandung Barat. In this study students are given a test in the form of questions with critical thinking skills, the problem is used to compare between the superior class and ordinary class. Assessment of the problem using several factors of critical ability include 1) students can not understand the problem correctly, 2) students rush in doing the problem, 3) the students cannot choose the problem-solving strategy correctly and 4) the students work on the problem systematically. Then the matter of critical thinking skills of mathematics is analyzed using quasi-experimental research method to analyze students' critical thinking ability that influence learning result. This study shows the differences in critical thinking ability of junior high school students who are in excellent class and ordinary class. This study shows that superior classes are better in mathematical critical thinking ability than a regular class. The results of this study can add knowledge about critical thinking mathematics junior high school students who are in the class and ordinary class and used to facilitate for educational practitioners in the development of critical mathematical thinking skills.

The purpose of this study is to compare the project-based learning model in the "Merdeka Belajar" curriculum and the inquiry learning model in terms of students' critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. The research question is whether there is a difference between these two learning models in terms of students' critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. The independent variable (X) is the project-based learning model (X1), while the dependent variables (Y) are critical thinking ability (Y1) and problem-solving ability (Y2). The research sample was taken from 10th-grade students at SMA Muhammadiyah 4 Surabaya, consisting of 4 classes with a total of 120 students. The research sample was selected from students who have a normal distribution, possess similar characteristics (homogeneous), and have the same average scores. Then, two groups (classes) of students were selected as samples, named as the experimental group and the control group. The analysis technique used was Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA). Based on Pillai's trace, Wilks' lambda, Hotelling's trace, and Roy's largest root, the value obtained was 0.000. As 0.000 < 0.05, the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. This indicates that there is a difference in critical thinking and problem-solving abilities between the project-based learning model and the inquiry learning model.

This research aims to determine the relationship between computational thinking ability and mathematical critical thinking ability of seventh-grade students at SMPN 49 Jakarta. Computational thinking ability is skills or processes in solving problems effectively, while mathematical critical thinking ability is a process of analyzing problems to make an accurate decision. This research used correlation research with research subjects consisting of 14 female students and 16 male students. The instrument in this study is a test in the form of a description, which is measured using indicators. This study used decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithm thinking as indicators of computational thinking ability. This study uses elementary clarification, essential support, inference, advanced clarification, strategy, and tactics as indicators of mathematical critical thinking. The outcome of this research showed a positive correlation between computational thinking ability and students’ mathematical critical thinking ability. The relationship analysis shows a simultaneous and significant relationship between computational thinking and essential mathematical thinking abilities. The correlation test results using Pearson Product Moment obtained a result of 0.897 with a coefficient of determination of 80.5%. The magnitude of the correlation indicates that the two abilities have a solid relationship. If computational thinking ability is high, then mathematical critical thinking ability is also high, and if computational thinking ability is low, then mathematical critical thinking ability is also low.
