Properties of two unitary operator functions involving idempotents

Weakly closed, commutative, symmetric rings of operators on a Hilbert space are examined and their structure is ex ploited to characterize normal operators in terms of the rings they generate. In the first chapter, notation is established, and the less common theorems from Hilbert space theory not to be used in later sections are briefly reviewed. In Chapter II, the structure of weakly closed, commu tative, symmetric rings with a cyclic vector is specified. This theorem is then used in conjunction with a strucure called a canonical decomposition system to establish that every weakly closed, commutative, symmetric ring or opera tors acting on a separable space and containing the iden tity is spatially isomorphic to a "divect sum" of L rings of a certain type. In Chapter III, two sets of necessary and sufficient conditions are given for two normal operators on a separ able Hilbert space to be unitarily equivalent. The concept of a spectral class of a normal operator is introduced -a natural generalization of the concept of an eigen value. Each spectral class is assigned a multiplicity, and it is shown that two normal operators are unitarily equivalent iff they have the same spectral classes with the same respective multiplicities. A multiplicity is iv also defined for weakly continuous positive functionals o n the symmetric ring generated by a normal operator in the weak topology, and it is shown that this multiplicity function determines the operator. This multiplicity theory is compared w i t h a previous theory. v CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION We shall be concerned in this paper with rings of operators on a Hilbert space, in particular, weakly closed, commutative, symmetric rings. All Hilbert spaces to be considered will be complex Hilbert spaces. If H is a Hilbert space and x,y e H, then (x(y) will denote the inner product of x and y, and 1 Jxi| will denote the norm of x. We shall consider only bounded linear operators in this paper, and therefore we shall use the word "operator" solely to mean a bounded linear operator. The set of all operators on the Hilbert space H will be denoted by B(H). If A s B(H), then A* will denote the adjoint of A, We employ the usual concepts of isometric, unitary, hermitian, normal, and positive definite operators. Knowledge of the weak, strong, strongest, and norm topologies for B(H) is assumed. The norm topology is the strongest of the four; hence, any set of operators closed in one of the topologies is closed in the norm topology. By a ring of operators we shall mean a set of opera tors forming a ring in the usual algebraic sense which is also a vector space over the complex numbers. In this case, M is totally disconnected, and the closure of every open set is open. Thus, M contains many sets which are both open and closed, and such sets we call clopen. It is easy to see that projections in E correspond v i a the Gelfand transform to the characteristic functions of clopen sets. In this book, modeling and estimation problems of random processes are treated in a unified geometric framework. For this, we need some basic facts about the Hilbert space theory of stochastic vector processes that have finite second order moments and are stationary in the wide sense. Such a process \(\{y(t)\}_{t\in \mathbb{Z}}\) is a collection of real or complex-valued random variables \(y_{k}(t),k = 1,2,\ldots,m,t \in \mathbb{Z}\), which generate a Hilbert space H with inner product $$\displaystyle{\langle \xi,\eta \rangle =\mathop{ \mathrm{E}}\nolimits \{\xi \bar{\eta }\},}$$ where bar denotes conjugation. This Hilbert space is endowed with a shift, i.e., a unitary operator \(\mathcal{U}:\, \mathbf{H} \rightarrow \mathbf{H}\) with the property that $$\displaystyle{y_{k}(t + 1) = \mathcal{U}y_{k}(t),\quad k = 1,2,\ldots,t \in \mathbb{Z}.}$$ In this chapter we introduce some basic geometric facts for such Hilbert spaces. In this paper we study a possibility of a decomposition of a bounded operator in a Hilbert space H as a product of a J-unitary and a J-self-adjoint operators, where J is a conjugation (an antilinear involution). This decompo- sition shows an inner structure of a bounded operator in a Hilbert space. Some decompositions of J-unitary and unitary operators which generalize decompo- sitions in the finite-dimensional case are also obtained. Matrix representations for J-symmetric and J-skew-symmetric operators are studied. Simple basic properties of J-symmetric, J-skew-symmetric and J-isometric operators are obtained.

Tight frames are extremely useful in applications. A scalable frame was recently introduced as a frame with the property of generating a tight frame by rescaling its frame vectors. In this paper, we consider piecewise scalable frames. We obtain some characterizations for them, and demonstrate that scalability is stable under unitary operators and isomorphisms between two Hilbert spaces. We further obtain a relation between the piecewise scalable frames in Hilbert spaces, and their tensor product

Throughout this note, an operator will always mean a bounded linear operator acting on a Hilbert space X into itself, unless otherwise stated. The class Cρ (0 < ρ < ∞ ) of operators, considered by Sz.-Nagy and Foiaş [5], is defined as follows: An operator T is in Cρ if Tnx = pPUnx for all x ∊ X, n = 1, 2, . . . , where U is a unitary operator on some Hilbert space Y containing X as a subspace, and P is the orthogonal projection of Y onto X. In [2] Holbrook defined the operator radii wρ(·) (0 < ρ ≦ ∞ ) as the generalized Minkowski distance functionals on the Banach algebra of bounded linear operators on X, i.e.,and w∞(T) = r(T), the spectral radius of T [2, Theorem 5.1].

Classical linear transformations in coordinate-momentum phase space are mapped to unitary quantum-mechanical operators in Hilbert space to produce a generalization of squeeze operators. The classical to quantum transition is manifestly apparent in the derivation. The unitary operators are evaluated in the coherent-state representation using the ``integration within ordered products'' technique in the one- and two-mode cases. Application of these operators results in a new generalization of coherent states.

This paper establishes some universal decomposition equalities for operator matrices in a Hilbert space. It includes two basic universal operator matrix decompositions for two-by-two and four-by-four operator matrices, and two four-by-four universal operator matrix decompositions for a four-term linear combination $$x_0I + x_1P + x_2Q + x_3PQ$$ , where P and Q are two commutative involutory or two commutative idempotent operators, and $$x_0, \, x_1, \, x_2, \, x_3$$ are four complex scalars. Many consequences are also presented concerning disjoint decomposition equalities, inverses, generalized inverses, collections of involutory, idempotent and tripotent operators generated from these linear combinations, etc.

Extract Although examples drive this book, we first provide a whirlwind survey of the general concepts of operator theory. We do not expect the student to master these topics now since they are covered in future chapters. Schur’s theorem helps us determine which infinite matrices define bounded operators on ℓ2⁠. Many of the operators covered in this book, such as the Cesàro operator, the Volterra operator, weighted shifts, Toeplitz operators, and Hankel operators, have fascinating structured-matrix representations. An important class of operators is the compact operators. These are the A∈B(H) such that (Axn)n=1∞ has a convergent subsequence whenever (xn)n=1∞ is a bounded sequence in H⁠. Equivalently, an operator is compact if it takes each bounded set to one whose closure is compact. Each finite-rank operator is compact and every compact operator is the norm limit of finite-rank operators. The compact operators form a norm-closed, *-closed ideal within B(H)⁠. Some operators have a particularly close relationship with their adjoint. For example, the operator M on L2[0,1] defined by (Mf)(x)=xf(x) satisfies M*=M⁠. Such operators are selfadjoint. If µ is a positive finite compactly supported Borel measure on C⁠, then the operator N on L2(μ) defined by (Nf)(z)=zf(z) satisfies (N*f)(z)=z―f(z)⁠, and thus N*N=NN*⁠. Such operators are normal. The operator (Uf)(eiθ)=eiθf(eiθ) on L2(T) satisfies U*U=UU*=I⁠. Such operators are unitary. Unitary operators preserve the ambient structure of Hilbert spaces and can serve as a vehicle to relate A∈B(H) with B∈B(K)⁠. We say that A is unitarily equivalent to B if there is a unitary U∈B(H,K) such that UAU*=B⁠. Unitary equivalence is often used to identify seemingly complicated operators with relatively simple ones.

This study investigates controlled bidirectional transmission of two low-dimensional unknown single-particle quantum states through high-dimensional entangled channels. Initially, complete orthogonal non-symmetric bases in -dimensional Hilbert space and five-particle maximally entangled states in d-dimensional Hilbert space are constructed, with -dimensional non-symmetric bases and 3-dimensional 5-qutrit entangled states serving as specific instances. We then propose a controlled bidirectional teleportation (CBT) protocol wherein a 3-dimensional 5-qutrit maximally entangled channel enables simultaneous exchange of two 2-dimensional single-qubit states under supervisor authorization, implemented via non-symmetric basis measurements. Subsequent replacement of the maximally entangled channel with a 3-dimensional 5-qutrit non-maximally entangled state facilitates probabilistic reconstruction of the original states through auxiliary particle introduction and appropriate unitary operations, still under supervisory control. The success probabilities are analytically derived, demonstrating that the non-maximally entangled protocol generalizes the former scheme. Furthermore, these protocols admit dual extensions: (i) quantum channel dimensionality scalable from 3-dimensional to arbitrary d dimensions; (ii) transmitted state dimensionality extendable from 2-dimensional to arbitrary f-dimensional Hilbert space (f < d).

Let be a unitary operator on a Hubert space H. Then in particular, (i) is a contraction, i.e. || T 1; and (ii) The spectrum of is a subset of the unit circle, i.e. Sp (T)cC, where C denotes the set of complex numbers of absolute value one. Call an arbitrary operator a unimodular contraction if it satisfies conditions (i) and (ii) above. Then several questions immediately come to mind. Do there exist nonunitary unimodular contractions? If so, what is the nature of their spectra, e.g. what subsets of the unit circle arise as spectra of nonunitary unimodular contractions; when does the spectrum contain point, residual, or continuous spectrum? Under what conditions is a unimodular contraction unitary? What is the nature of operator algebras containing nonunitary unimodular contractions? In this paper examples are given of nonunitary unimodular contractions. It is shown (Theorem 2) that such exist with arbitrarily prescribed spectrum, which however can contain no residual spectrum. It is also shown (Theorem 1) that nonunitary unimodular contractions exist only in infinite von Neumann algebras. This result is applied to a mapping problem of operator algebras.

Within the quantum theory of measurements continuous in time, a photon detection theory was formulated by using quantum stochastic calculus; this is a purely quantum formulation, where the usual notions of quantum mechanics appear: the dynamics is given by unitary operators and the observables are represented by commuting self-adjoint operators. In this paper we show how this theory can be equivalently developed by means of classical stochastic differential equations for vectors in a Hilbert space and for trace-class operators. This second formulation is linked to Belavkin's equation for a posteriori states and to quantum trajectory theory. A great part of this paper is dedicated to proving this equivalence between the purely quantum formulation and the stochastic one. The theory of direct and heterodyne detection is developed, with emphasis on the fact that the theory of heterodyne detection can be obtained as a limiting case (strong local oscillator) from the theory of direct detection. We discuss also the connections between the quantum Monte Carlo wavefunction method and some of the stochastic equations which appear in the theory of direct detection.
