Prototype of an Arduino-Based 3D Scanner Printed Using 3D Printing

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the use of three‐dimensional (3D) scanning technologies for design and engineering courses. This paper will provide a comparative discussion of the current 3D scanning technologies; and then describes three experimental studies in engineering, transport design and fashion design. Using 3D scanner technology the experiments tested the transferral of a variety of different data from scanned organic 3D shapes to 3D CAD packages for learning and teaching in undergraduate education. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to describe how 3D printing and scanning technology was implemented by the Dalhousie University Libraries in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Insights will be outlined about the benefits of these technologies in terms of data visualization and archival practices, as well as the potential user base for library‐centered 3D printing and scanning services.Design/methodology/approachThis paper describes why the Dalhousie University Libraries purchased a 3D printer and scanner, the challenges of maintaining these technologies and instructing students in their use, and how Dalhousie faculty members and students have made use of these technologies for their own research purposes.Findings3D printing and scanning technologies can be of use to a much wider range of Faculties than have traditionally had access to them. The unique role libraries have on university campuses allows them to function as universal access points for these technologies. By offering 3D scanning technology, they can also use this technology internally for archival purposes.Originality/valueWhile much has been written on 3D printing and scanning technology, very little has been written about how these technologies could relate to academic libraries. This paper sets the groundwork for further exploration into how 3D technologies can improve and expand library services.

Replica artefacts are a well-established feature of Roman archaeology, particularly as used in experimental archaeology, by re-enactors, and in museum education. 3D scanning offers a new methodology for the accurate production of such artefacts, which can then be used both in scholarly research and in public engagement activities. This article describes methodologies for 3D scanning and 3D printing, together with appropriate craft techniques, in the creation of replica musical instruments from the collection of UCL's Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology in London. While there were some challenges in replica creation, discussed in further detail, 'functional replicas' were successfully made, that, we argue, replicate sufficiently accurately those features of the objects under investigation from a research perspective. These were the decibel levels (sound power levels), and, for some objects, frequency (pitch) ranges produced, and the variety of sounds that they could produce. This evidence makes an important contribution to our understanding of the contexts of use of the original instruments. Sound recordings virtually modelled in a likely use location, the courtyard of a typical house from Roman-period Egypt, were also produced and assist in our conceptualisation of the wider acoustic environment. Sound recordings and replicas were additionally used for public engagement purposes in a temporary exhibition at the Petrie Museum, and their contribution to museum education is assessed. 3D scanning and printing technology are demonstrated to be valuable techniques for the production of accurate replicas, which can be used successfully to contribute to scholarly research and museum education in new ways. Appendices include .stl files that may be downloaded and 3D printed, to make copies of the replicas for use in new research and education projects.

PurposeSkin cancer is the most common tumor in the population. There are different therapeutic modalities. Brachytherapy is one of the techniques used, in which it is necessary to build customized moulds for some patients. Currently, these moulds are made by hand using rudimentary techniques. We present a new procedure based on 3D printing and the analysis of the clinical workflow.Material and methodsMoulds can be made either by hand or by automated 3D printing. For making moulds by hand, a patient’s alginate negative is created and, from that, the gypsum cast and customized moulds are made by hand from the patient’s negative template. The new process is based on 3D printing. The first step is to take a 3D scan of the surface of the patient and then, 3D modelling software is used to obtain an accurate anatomical reconstruction of the treatment area. We present the clinical workflow using 3D scanning and printing technology, comparing its costs with the usual custom handmade mould protocol.ResultsThe time spent for the new process is 6.25 hours, in contrast to the time spent for the conventional process, which is 9.5 hours. We found a 34% reduction in time required to create a mould for brachytherapy treatment. The labor cost of the conventional process is 211.5 vs. 152.5 hours, so the reduction is 59 hours. There is also a 49.5% reduction in the financial costs, mostly due to lack of need of a computed tomography (CT) scan of the gypsum and the mould. 3D scanning and printing offers financial benefits and reduces the clinical workload.ConclusionsAs the present project demonstrates, through the application of 3D printing technologies, the costs and time spent during the process in the clinical workload in brachytherapy treatment are reduced. Overall, 3D printing is a promising technique for brachytherapy that might be well received in the community.

In recent years, the increasingly mature oral digital technology has opened a new era of implant treatment. Before implant treatment, digital information is collected from various aspects and virtual patients are constructed based on three-dimensional (3D) scanning technology, and this greatly optimizes the preoperative virtual tooth arrangement, esthetic design and implant treatment plan, and brings great clinical convenience to patients and doctors. In this review, the application and new progress of facial 3D scanning technology in the field of implantology will be described, and the opportunities and challenges brought by digitalization technology to clinicians will be deeply discussed, in order to provide a reference for implantologists to fully understand the application of digitalization in the field of implantology.

This study demonstrates the development and application of a novel workflow for designing and fabricating orthoses, using a combination of 3D scanning and 3D printing technologies. The workflow is applied to a clinically relevant translational case study in a patient with a neurological disorder and complex clinical needs. All traditional and commercial approaches to helping the patient’s cervical instability and resulting ‘head-drop’ had previously failed, with associated progressive deterioration in the patient’s clinical state and posture. The workflow was developed to design and fabricate a bespoke device for this patient with no viable alternative therapy. The workflow was developed to generate 3D printable geometry from obtained 3D scan data. The workflow includes algorithms to relax geometry, distribute material efficiently and for variational cutting of orthosis padding material. The 3D patient scan was validated against actual measurements to ensure accuracy of measurements. A total of four prototypes were produced with each iteration being improved based on patient and clinical feedback. There was a progressive improvement in subjective feedback through each iteration at sites of discomfort and overall comfort score. There was a marked improvement in the patient’s posture with correction at the cervical and lumbar spine with the 3D-printed padded collar being worn for 4 hour periods. This study has implications for the rapid production of personalised orthoses which can help reduce patient waiting time, improve patient compliance, reduce pain and reduce further deterioration. The workflow could form the basis for an integrated process, whereby a single hospital visit results in a bespoke orthosis optimised and personalised for each patient.

This study explores the combination of 3D scanning and 3D printing technology for automotive retrofitting in the design and create prototypes of automotive retrofitting components. Designs were conceptualized in CAD using 3D scans of the artifacts and 3D prints of accurate physical prototypes were produced. The precision of creating new automotive accessory components, on the other hand, is severely hampered by mistakes made in the early phases of the design process. Such discrepancies result in incorrect fitting, increased production costs, and delayed deliveries, reflecting the necessity of accurate and reliable design methodologies. The combination of highresolution 3D scanning data with advanced 3D printing techniques demonstrates a high-quality prototype parts production, showcasing an efficient workflow. A comprehensive methodology involving data acquisition via 3D scan, CAD model conversions for the purpose of 3D print, as well as prototypes fabrication is provided. Deviation analysis was performed to assess fitting accuracy and ensure the best match between prototype and carryover components. Result shows that by using the deviation analysis, the prototype produced match with the surfaces of the carryover part within the acceptable range of 0mm to 0.5mm. It shows a significant improvement in design accuracy, manufacturing speed, and overall prototyping speed as compared to traditional processes. How 3D scanning and 3D printing technologies can be integrated was found to be the key to accelerating the automotive components developing, realize faster iteration cycle and higher-quality results. It is expected that future work would further optimize this embedding to explore the process on complex vehicle parts and assemblies.

The use of 3D scanning technologies for surface scanning of objects is limited by environmental conditions and technology requirements based on their characteristics. Among the emerging fields is technical diagnostics in areas of hard-to-reach places with varying surface characteristics of objects of different materials, where the use of commercially available 3D scanning technologies is limited by space. Furthermore, in these areas it is not convenient to use external reference elements or to move the equipment during the digitization process. This paper presents a novel markerless 3D scanning system capable of digitizing objects in confined spaces without requiring external reference elements or repositioning the device relative to the object and aims to address this challenge by designing a 3D scanning technology using the Active Shape from Stereo technique utilizing laser vertical line projection. For this purpose, a testing and prototype design and a software solution using a unique method of calculating 3D surface coordinates have been proposed. In addition to hard-to-reach places, this solution can be used as a desktop 3D scanner and for other 3D digitizing applications for objects of different materials and surface characteristics. Furthermore, the device is well suited to inspecting 3D printed objects, enabling quick, markerless checks of surface geometry and dimensions during the process of 3D printing to ensure printing accuracy and quality.

Application of 3D scanning and 3D printing in forensic practices - A preliminary survey among forensic practitioners in India

Recent development of methodologies based on digital twins through 3D scanning and 3D printing has increased over the past decade, offering new possibilities in manufacturing, production and scaling of models’ applications. However, there are few examples of the application of model digitization technologies for the restoration of ceramic-built heritage by means of 3D modelling. That is why this research focuses on the application of these advanced methodologies to the recovery of architectural ceramic ornamental objects in heritage buildings. Deteriorated ceramic pieces are selected and scanned during field campaigns using 3D scanning technology in early 20th century heritage sites in Seville (Spain). The aim is to create accurate replicas of these damaged objects by 3D printing with clay using non-invasive techniques. The study stands out for its practical approach and its implications for the conservation of built cultural heritage. The results proved effective for replacing lost or damaged elements in a heritage context. Once the investment in the necessary equipment and technologies has been made, the use of clay as a material for 3D printing not only proves feasible but also offers advantages in terms of cost and time savings for repairs compared to traditional restoration techniques. In the present investigation the production time of similar pieces using 3D printing took 6.3–10.9 h while traditional methods take over a week. The application of these technologies represents an advancement in integrating modern methods into cultural heritage conservation, opening new possibilities for the preservation of history and art worldwide.

This research work presents a preliminary study for the assessment of lymphedema using low-cost 3D scanning and modelling technology. The aim is to develop a methodology to measure the anatomical key features of the upper limbs lymphedema using a 3D scanning technology and an ad-hoc developed application, named Lym 3DLab. The application is able to automatically measure both perimeters of cross sections and volumes of arm segments for medical evaluation and design of compression stockings using the upper limb polygonal mesh. The scanning procedure is based on a Microsoft Kinect v1 as scanner and the low-cost Skanect tool, which creates the polygonal mesh of the 3D acquisition. Lym 3DLab has been developed using open-source Software Development Kits, such as Qt and Visualization Toolkit. The acquired volumes have been compared with the water displacement method, which is considered the gold standard for measuring volumes of limbs affected by lymphedema. A preliminary test has been performed to compare volumes measured using the developed procedure with the gold standard. Five volunteers have been involved who are not affected by lymphedema. The arm volume measured with water displacement have been compared with the volume computed using 3D model of arm in Lym 3DLab. The range of differences is between −6,75 cm3 and 9,40 cm3. Reached results are the base for planning further test with a large number of patients affected by lymphedema in collaboration with a hospital.

The existing researchon coal gangue identification based on vibrationusually assumes that coal gangue particles are ideal shapes. To understandthe vibration response difference in hydraulic support caused by coaland gangue with real shapes, this paper uses a three-dimensional (3D)scanning technology to determine the real shape of coal particles.The process of coal and gangue impacting the tail beam at differentangles was simulated in the LS-DYNA software package, and the effectsof shape parameters, velocity, and coal strength on the differencein vibration signals caused by the two were analyzed statistically.The conclusions are as follows: the vibrational response of the tailbeam is concentrated mainly in the area between the ribs. The regularityof the velocity signal caused by gangue is better than the regularityof the velocity signal caused by coal, and the attenuation speed ofthe acceleration signal of gangue is slower than the attenuation speedof the acceleration signal of coal. The probability distributionsof the velocity and acceleration responses were analyzed statistically,and the results show that the results from coal can be well fittedby a logarithmic normal function, and the standard deviations of velocityand acceleration are 0.05591 and 489.8, respectively. The gangue resultsare fitted by the gamma function and the Weibull function, and thestandard deviations are 0.13531 and 737.9, respectively, showing thatthe fitting function has the potential to be used as the basis forcoal gangue identification. The change in coal strength has littleeffect on the vibration response of the tail beam. With increasinglyfalling velocity, the vibration signal intensity of the tail beamincreases, but the discrimination between coal and gangue weakens;therefore, measures should be taken to reduce the falling velocityof the rock mass. The research results of this paper can provide areference for further study of coal gangue identification methodsbased on vibration.
