Abstract

A series of bridge models (1:2.5 scale) will be tested in the European Laboratory for Structural Assessment (ELSA) of the Joint Research Centre of the Commission of the European Communities (CEC). This activity is part of a pre-normative research project in support of Eurocode n. 8 under the Human Capital Mobility Programme of the CEC aiming at the improvement of design procedures for bridges in seismic regions. The structures will be tested pseudo-dynamically using the substructuring technique; the piers are tested physically whereas the deck is simulated on-line analytically. Results from these tests will certainly provide useful data for the calibration of analytical models and consequently to assess and improve the current seismic design procedures for bridges. The study herein reported intends to contribute to the success of the programme focusing mainly on the influence of the connections between the piers and the superstructure (the interface between the physical and the analytical structural parts) on the seismic response. Moreover, results from dynamic non-linear analyses are compared with the results from the numerical pseudo-dynamic (PSD) test simulation. In addition, a short description of the substructure technique in PSD testing, as implemented in ELSA, is made.
