This study aimed to investigating the effect of teaching short stories for Sudanese EFL Learners' Achievement of English Language. The problem of the study was that, the researcher noticed that the aims of Sudan Practical Integrated National English Series (SPINE ) are not achieved since the students who finish the 6th textbooks of SPINE series can hardly write a paragraph or speak English freely, naturally and fluently, add to that the results of English Language Exams in Sudan Secondary Certificate are characterized by deterioration. This study adopted a quasi-empirical method. The sample of the study consisted of (68) male and female eighth basic students in Omdurman locality in the first term of the academic year 2016 / 2017.The population of the study was (204) students. The subjects of the study were distributed randomly into two groups in each one (34) (17 male and 17 female group as an experimental) and (17 male and 17 female as a control group). The experimental group was taught via student's text book plus short stories strategy while the control group was taught via student's textbook only. A pre/post-test was constructed to measure the students' level in Language skills before and after the experiment. The study used recent statistical package to analyze the data. The results indicated statistically significant differences in students' achievement in favour of the experimental group. Based on these results the researcher recommended that curricula designers, educators, and experts should adopt short stories or include at least short stories in syllabuses. There is an urgent need for training programs for teachers in the field of literature in general and short stories in particular. Simplified copies of short stories such as A Tale of Two Cities, the Black Tulip, Treasure Island, etc., are very much recommended as formal literary text.

In Lebanon, the methods of teaching employed are mostly conventional. Teachers spend a lot of time giving lessons and homework to students, as well as reading assignments and correcting exercises completed in class. Students usually play a passive role in the education process; they listen calmly, occasionally question what is presented, and copy texts and information dictated by the teacher. Textbooks are the major source of instruction, yet many Lebanese schools have partially introduced electronic devices, and have discreetly started to rely on them. Given the reported discrepancies between textbooks and tablets learning, it was essential to conduct a Lebanese study that compares both entities. To assess the influence of textbooks and tablets on cognition and attention, it was also necessary to consider the schooling age that is critical for understanding the human brain and cognition. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the association between of tablet vs. book learning on memory, attention, and learning abilities among Lebanese children. This cross-sectional study, conducted between January-May 2019, enrolled 566 students aged of 11–13 years. Two schools were chosen conveniently for this study, one of them uses the Tablet and text books for students’ learning whereas the second one uses text books exclusively. Students were randomly chosen from the list given by the school administration. Textbook learning was significantly associated with better episodic and visual memory, better attention, processing speed and mathematic skills compared to tablets and textbook learning. Learning is evolving to another level and forever changing. Many studies should be conducted in order to understand the importance of merging new and old techniques to ensure that the next generations are receiving what can positively affect their cognitive skills and their performance.

With the rapid aging of Japan's population, medical professionals who specialize in geriatric medicine are in unprecedented demand. At Ehime University School of Medicine, the Department of Geriatric Medicine was established on April 1,1997. To assess the status of geriatric medicine in undergraduate education, we surveyed the opinions of medical students on geriatric medicine. A questionnaire was sent to both fourth-year medical students before their classes on internal medicine and geriatric medicine had ended and to sixth-year medical students after their classes had already ended. Medical students of Ehime University School of Medicine had significantly more interest in geriatric medicine than students at other medical schools. From a clinical viewpoint of problems in old age, they considered that cerebrovascular disease, cardiovascular disorders, neurocognitive disorders and pulmonary disease were important. A total of 60% agreed that all medical schools should have classes in geriatric medicine, which is a higher rate than that of previous reports. To study the opinions of medical students on textbooks on geriatrics, we also conducted a questionnaire among medical students. Although 90% of students had their own textbooks of internal medicine and almost half (42%) had textbooks on physical examination, none had their own textbook of geriatric medicine. The most frequent reason was "hard to choose the best textbook". The present study indicates that to develop education in geriatric medicine, it is important to make a recommendable text book for medical students, which is easily understood with high quality and originality.

This paper presents an overview of the current trends in technical communication in English in India. The use of English language has undergone a great change and has largely become industry-specific. The prescribed text books for college students, which earlier had a mix of prose, poetry, drama and essays, have now been replaced by text books in Business English or Communciative English. This paper examines the effects of learning English purely for the purpose of professional communication.

States it is widely recognised that, despite excellent higher education research and training expertise, the UK is generally weak in transferring this knowledge into marketable products (House of Lords, 1997). In particular, there is serious under‐utilisation of science and technology graduates by the increasingly important small and medium enterprise (SME) sector. The aim of this paper is to explore the potential for absorbing the “know‐how” of science and technology graduates into the SME sector. Special consideration will be given to the attitudes of these graduates towards SME employment, while business start‐ups as alternative career options are also explored. The data are derived from a survey of 250 Manchester‐based science and technology students. The paper concludes with relevant policy recommendations.

Recent advancement in logging technology and data analytics enables measuring a comprehensive set of formation petrophysical properties and rock composition in cased-hole environments. Using state-of-art pulsed neutron logging technology and processing algorithms enables recording capture and inelastic elemental spectroscopy for rock elemental concentrations, including total organic carbon, detailed mineralogy and matrix properties, simultaneously to sigma and other neutron-based outputs. The integration of the interpreted lithology from cased-hole elemental spectroscopy data with electrofacies from high-resolution imaging tools recorded in the open-hole provides the characterization of heterogeneity challenges by building a synthetic core in old wells with limited data gathering from open-hole logging or absence of conventional coring. An effective way to incorporate those measurements has been developed and adapted to the use of cased-hole spectroscopy logs. The dry weight elemental fractions measured by the advanced pulse neutron technology are corrected for wellbore contribution and converted into dry weight mineralogical outputs. Using an automated processing workflow converts the capture and inelastic gamma-ray yields from the energy spectrum measured behind casing into the dry weight of elements and mineral fractions in the formation. The computed mineralogical outputs are then defined based on a standardized ternary diagram approach to developing dry-weight mineralogy-based lithofacies. This classification is then combined with the calibrated micro-resistivity image data collected during the open-hole logs evaluation to present a high-resolution rock typing (after Kumar & Kear). The resulting log is dry weight mineralogy-based high-resolution lithofacies that contain vital information to support geological and petrophysical reserves modeling adjustments during development and production. The paper demonstrates the applicability of the method to cased-hole environments in fields with mixed lithology and complex geological background. Once a robust lithofacies classification is achieved, this is applied for detailed stratigraphic analysis, well-to-well correlation, or refined static reservoir modeling. A standardized mineral-based facies scheme guides the selection of higher completion-quality intervals, otherwise difficult to define in old wells with limited original evaluation. Besides, thin beds that were previously bypassed can be detected and characterized for high-resolution net pay calculation leveraging the high-resolution lithofacies output from this approach. The lithofacies classification (synthetic core) provides important input to the study of reservoir connectivity in the development phase and production optimization. Moreover, a synthetic core description would be critical when reassessing mature fields and defining completion and production strategies where core data is not available. The approach and workflow can be implemented in various cases as a cost-effective solution in multiple scenarios and different formation types.

According to market prospects there is a demand for the bottled fresh sugarcane juice than any other fruit based beverages because of its nutritional and therapeutic properties. Sugarcane juice short shelf life and deterioration are linked to the existence of active enzymes like peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase as well as its microbial composition. The membrane assisted pulsed electric field technology (M-PEF) was used for this experiment in which the hollow spiral wound ultra-filter membrane for 10 kDa pore size at 1 bar pressure employed as a pretreatment to pulsed electric field processing for the treatment of sugarcane juice. The process parameters are 20, 30, and 40 kV/cm field strength for the pulse width of 100, 150, and 200 μs. The reduction of 92% in polyphenol oxidase and 80% in peroxidase enzyme activity was achieved due to Pulsed electric field at a field strength and pulse width of 30 kV/cm for 150μs respectively retaining the overall quality of the sugarcane juice and there was 85-95% reduction was observed in the protein and polysaccharide content of the sugarcane juice due to the membrane filtration pore size exclusion effect. Ascorbic acid content was retained in the M-PEF samples while increasing its antioxidant capacity. The experiment results showed that due to Pulsed electric field treatment there was 3 log reductions are observed on total plate count. This technology showed that, it can be used as novel technique for the preservation of the fresh juices.

Matrix acidizing can effectively stimulate carbonate reservoirs, often resulting in skin factors on the order of –3 to –4. Wormholes can effectively connect the well with the reservoir. However, if the carbonate reservoir is naturally fractured, it will be difficult to generate dominant wormholes using conventional matrix acidizing. Hence, an effective acidizing technique is crucial to handle such heterogeneous carbonate rock, especially if the permeability contrast is vast between the matrix and fracture. This paper exhibits a novel workflow developed by a multidomain team to reveal the true potential of the fractured carbonate reservoir in a heterogeneous complex basin in the Eastern Desert in Egypt called the GoS basin. The new logging program uses high-resolution wellbore imaging, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and casedhole pulsed neutron logging technology and processing algorithms to record capture and inelastic elemental spectroscopy for matrix parameters, detailed mineralogy, and oil saturation. The output of this characterization portrayed complex challenges that prevent having defined acid distribution between the flow zones of the natural fractures and the unfractured matrix due to the permeability contrast of 130:1. The key to success in dealing with such stimulation jobs is choosing the optimal chemical diversion, main acid treatment, pumping placement, and establishing a fit-for-purpose pumping schedule. Many experimental and laboratory tests were performed to prepare a viscous pill to be utilized as temporary isolation for the fracture or the fissures network prior to starting the full acid treatment. In addition to that, employing a passive diverter instead of an active acid-based diverter was a seamless technique to divert the acid away from each zone after pumping. The results of this novel workflow and the new acid technique indicate a sixfold increase in well productivity. The falloff analysis followed by the viscous pill reinforces the potency of the temporary isolation; this aids in treating the lower-permeability layers, which are the candidates for matrix acidizing. The applications of this novel workflow unlock the true potential of the lower-permeability reservoirs and maximize the estimated ultimate recovery. This paper showcases our experiences with the use of this unique recipe in fractured carbonate reservoirs, and in reservoir characterization and provides lessons learned to fill knowledge gaps in this area and provide a complete workflow that can be utilized everywhere worldwide.

In recent years, pulsed laser processing technology is widely used in MEMS device manufacturing, aerospace technology, precision instrument manufacturing and circuit board processing. According to the characteristics of nanosecond laser, this paper designs a novel nanosecond pulsed laser micromachining system with PMAC card as its core unit. The system can achieve automation control of laser parameters and movement pattern of motion system by software, which can easily realize automatic processing of point, line, and plane structure in micron scale. In this paper, several groups of experiments are taken to test the reliability and accuracy of the machining system and find the group to obtain the best processing result.

The main elements of teaching are included teachers, students, and textbooks. Many people argue that the students are the key success of the teaching. Thinking to against that many people belief, many studies pointed the view that textbooks are the key of learning. It based on the assumption that both teacher and students are depend on the book in learning process. Therefore, great care and attention to the quality of text-book itself has to be taken in selecting the most appropriate textbook that fit to some factors as teacher’s interests, teaching objectives and finally students’ needs as well. Textbook evaluation checklist by Daoud and Celce-Murcia (1979) is used in this study because it is most appropriate for evaluating this current textbook. In this current study, the researcher evaluated K-13 English text book used by XII grade students of MAN 1 Bojonegoro as instructional material in the teaching and learning. Some aspects to be evaluated based on Textbook evaluation checklist by Daoud and Celce-Murcia (1979) including subject matter, vocabulary and structures, exercises, illustration, and physical make-up. This study is important as it hope will find out the strength as well as the weaknesses areas of the course book. This current study has been developed in order to analyze an available specialized course book for the second grade students. The results of the current study have important implications both for language teachers and the improvement of the course book

ABSTRACTThe last decade has witnessed a significant rise in scholarly and policy attention paid to the migration and career decisions of international (post)graduate research students, particularly those in science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines. Considered by many governments as important contributors to national science and innovation agendas, as well as potential members of an educated labour force, several states have implemented strategic regulatory changes to encourage foreign (post)graduate students in these fields to remain after their studies. However, these policies tend to frame such students as free agents able to respond to easing work permit or residency conditions in line with their individual career or lifestyle preferences. This paper advances theorisations of post‐graduation decision making among international students by illustrating the extent to which diverse transnational social ties and personal concerns are highly influential in shaping migration and career strategies. Drawing on in‐depth interviews with foreign students completing science and engineering (post)graduate degrees in London, UK and Toronto, Canada, the paper demonstrates that relationship considerations, such as care for ageing parents, managing dual careers, and future childcare and work‐life balance concerns, are tightly intermingled with graduates' different employment and settlement considerations at this transitional life‐stage. These findings carry wider implications for our understanding of the multiple geographic directions in which students feel pulled upon graduation – challenging traditional push‐pull or stay‐or‐return portrayals. They also underscore the importance of accommodating social reproduction concerns for the production and circulation of a scientific labour force. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The aim of this study is to examine the representation of foreign and Indonesian cultural content in three English textbooks of 9th-grade junior high school students in Indonesia. This is descriptive qualitative research and uses a multicultural perspective approach. The data was taken from three English texts books, Think Globally Act Locally, English in Focus and Bright An English. The content analysis of this textbook was carried out using four aspects of the cultural dimension; product, practice, perspective, and person. The data was analyzed, from two perspectives; the perspective of cultural components and the perspective of cultural presentation levels. Based on the data analysis, it has been discovered that Indonesian culture is overrepresented in the three English textbooks, resulting in a poor presentation of foreign cultural elements. Product dimension is the most prevalent in textbooks, followed by person dimension, practice dimension, and perspective dimension based on percentage distribution. The cultural content of the English textbooks reveals an unbalance between foreign and Indonesian cultures. Most of the English-language textbooks contain Indonesian cultures, while only a few include other cultures. In comparison to Indonesian cultures, there are fewer foreign cultural representations in the English textbooks. It is recommended that English textbooks should include more materials from the cultures of English-speaking countries.

During the past 15 years, the science of hydrology has developed to that stage where there is general agreement on the basic facts and principles. The time is ripe and the needs call for the issuance of a new text book on hydrology, its fundamentals and its application in engineering and agriculture. It would be a textbook for teachers and students in colleges of engineering and agriculture. This book should have the simplicity and condensed strength of its predecessors; the works of Adolph F. Meyer and Daniel W. Mead.

High Hydrostatic Pressure (HHP) processing is a comparatively newer technique that has attracted attention of food scientists in the past few decades. The main advantage of HHP processing is instant and homogenous transmittance of pressure in the food product, leading to inactivation of microorganisms and shelf-life extension of food products. The use of HHP for food processing is growing within the food industry. There are a number of foodstuffs to which HHP has been successfully applied, such as oysters, avocado puree, fruit juices, sliced jam, etc. Starch is an essential biopolymers extensively used in the food industry. A study on legume batters showed that HHP processing provokes variation on the rheology of hydrated samples, mainly in softer batters, causing an increased solidity/stiffness. The effects of HHP on microbial inactivation will depend on a number of factors like kind of microorganism, temperature, magnitude, time of the HHP treatment, and composition of suspension media or food.

In the latest report of the College Placement Council it was noted that a recovery of sorts may be underway for recent graduates in science, engineering, or technology. Based on a survey of 185 placement offices at 160 colleges and universities, the College Placement Survey concluded in its April 1983 report that only one half as many job offers in science, engineering, and technology fields were reported this year, compared with the same time last year. However, although fewer offers were made, more jobs were filled.Petroleum engineering graduates have commanded the highest beginning salaries of all fields this spring. The average salary offered to petroleum engineers in the class of 1983 is $31,044 per year, almost a 2% increase over last year's starting salary for the same discipline. In second place are chemical engineering graduates who are being offered average starting salaries of $27,336 per year, about 1% higher than last year's figure.
