QRPp1-6: Adaptive Forward Error Correction for Interactive Streaming Over the Internet

This paper presents an effective packet loss recovery scheme for Internet Protocol (IP) based peer-to-pear (P2P) networks that deliver multimedia streaming contents. The proposed scheme consists of two key components, a packet forward error correction (FEC) scheme and a uniquely decodable coding (UDC) scheme. The FEC scheme is devised to recover network packet loss over the transport layer to improve link transmission reliability at the user-ends of the P2P networks. The UDC scheme is employed to allow multiple sources to transmit data streams simultaneously in such a way that the combined data streams can be separated uniquely without ambiguity at the user-ends. This simultaneous multiple sources data transmission increases the throughput at the user-ends. Theoretical analysis and computer simulations show that the proposed scheme can achieve the commonly acceptable of 10^{-6} end-to-end packet loss rate for input packet loss rate of up to 10%with a reasonably small bandwidth expansion factor, while maintains a high throughput at the user-ends.

In real-time video streaming, data packets are transported over the network from a transmitter to a receiver. The quality of the received video fluctuates as the network conditions change, and it can degrade substantially when there is considerable packet loss. Forward error correction (FEC) techniques can be used to recover lost packets by incorporating redundant data. Conventional FEC schemes do not work well when scalable video coding (SVC) is adopted. In this paper, we propose a novel FEC scheme that overcomes the drawbacks of these schemes by considering the reference picture structure of SVC and weighting the reference pictures more when FEC redundancy is applied. The experimental results show that the proposed FEC scheme outperforms conventional FEC schemes.

With the exponential growth of video traffic over wireless networked and embedded devices, mechanisms are needed to predict and control perceptual video quality to meet the quality of experience (QoE) requirements in an energy-efficient way. This paper proposes an energy-efficient QoE support framework for wireless video communications. It consists of two components: 1) a perceptual video quality model that allows the prediction of video quality in real-time and with low complexity, and 2) an application layer energy-efficient and content-aware forward error correction (FEC) scheme for preventing quality degradation caused by network packet losses. The perceptual video quality model characterizes factors related to video content as well as distortion caused by compression and transmission. Prediction of perceptual quality is achieved through a decision tree using a set of observable features from the compressed bitstream and the network. The proposed model can achieve prediction accuracy of 88.9% and 90.5% on two distinct testing sets. Based on the proposed quality model, a novel FEC scheme is introduced to protect video packets from losses during transmission. Given a user-defined perceptual quality requirement, the FEC scheme adjusts the level of protection for different components in a video stream to minimize network overhead. Simulation results show that the proposed FEC scheme can enhance the perceptual quality of videos. Compared to conventional FEC methods for video communications, the proposed FEC scheme can reduce network overhead by 41% on average.

Forward error correction (FEC) technique has been widely used in wireless communication and mass storage applications. In recent years, FEC has also become very important to optical communication because of its powerful error correcting ability. FEC codes provide performance gain by trading off coding gain with coding redundancy and decoding complexity. For transmission bit rate of 10 Gb/s or higher, coding redundancy of less than 25% is desired. Therefore, FEC schemes with moderate coding redundancy and tolerable decoding complexity are desirable and very important for high-speed long-haul optical systems. In this thesis, two FEC augmentation schemes, namely wavelength interleaving and errors-and-erasures decoding (E&ED), are proposed to improve the FEC performance of optical channels subjected to polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and chromatic dispersion (CD). Wavelength interleaving provides frequency diversity, hence reducing the effective error burst length and improving FEC performance without requiring more coding redundancy. In E&ED scheme, an erasure zone is used to collect highly unreliable received symbols called erasure symbols.

An FEC scheme combined with weighted scheduling to reduce multicast packet loss in IPTV over PON

In this chapter, we describe different forward error correction (FEC) schemes currently in use or suitable for use in optical communication systems. We start with the description of standard block codes. The state-of-the-art in optical communication systems standardized by the ITU employ concatenated Bose–Chaudhuri–Hocquenghem (BCH)/RS codes [1, 2]. The RS(255,239), in particular, has been used in a broad range of long-haul communication systems [1, 2], and it is commonly considered as the first-generation of FEC [3, 4]. The elementary FEC schemes (BCH, RS, or convolutional codes) may be combined to design more powerful FEC schemes, e.g., RS(255,239) + RS(255,233). Several classes of concatenation codes are listed in ITU-T G975.1. Different concatenation schemes, such as the concatenation of two RS codes or the concatenation of RS and convolutional codes, are commonly considered as second generation of FEC [3, 4].

This paper shows an important enhancement of TCP behavior over the IEEE 802.11b Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) if a combination of a Forward Error Correction (FEC) scheme and a Snoop agent is added to the idle Repeat reQuest (RQ) mechanism inherently used by such technology. The FEC scheme has been improved with some smart cross-layer optimizations, and its operation adapts to the channel conditions. Besides, the aim of the Snoop agent is to back up the FEC, overcoming the deficiencies of its adaptation, which are mainly due to the high variability of the channel inside a typical office environment. A complete experimental approach has been followed, and exhaustive measurement campaigns have been carried out over a real platform to derive a large number of performance parameters. Both methods have been implemented as modules belonging to a generic layer-two Performance Enhancing Proxy (PEP).

This paper studies TCP performance improvement in wireless and heterogeneous networks using Forward Error Correction (FEC) technique driven by TCP semantics. In the proposed scheme, called TCP-aware FEC, the amount of redundancy added to a packet at the sender node corresponds to the level of error protection and is computed as a function of TCP congestion window. The TCP-aware FEC becomes stronger for low congestion window values (experienced after a packet loss is detected), while the amount of added redundancy is reduced for the large window values approaching the capacity of the end-to-end link.

Online video transmissions over wireless networks are rising in popularity and have already become part of our daily life. In the meantime, it is necessary to address a number of challenges ranging from the scarce resources, time-varying, and high error rates, to the fluctuating bandwidth, unveiling the need for an adaptive mechanism to ensure a good video transmission. Adaptive Forward Error Correction (FEC) techniques with Quality of Experience (QoE) assurance are appropriate to deliver QoE-aware video data to wireless users in dynamic and high error rates networks. This paper proposes an adaptive Video-aware FEC and Fuzzy Logic-based mechanism to shield realtime video transmissions against packet loss in wireless networks, improving both user experience and the usage of resources. The benefits and drawbacks of the proposed mechanism compared with exiting work are demonstrated through simulations and assessed with QoE metrics.

This paper evaluates energy level performance of error control strategies in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). More precisely Forward Error Correcting (FEC) and Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) technique are studied for a square grid WSN. ARQ scheme is compared with FEC scheme in terms of Packet Error Rate (PER), energy efficiency and total energy spent to communicate packetized data. The impact of node spatial density and packet lengths on energy efficiency and energy expenditure is discussed. Further an optimum FEC scheme with the maximal energy efficiency for a given node spatial density and packet size is evaluated. The impact of node spatial density and packet length on optimal error correcting capability is indicated. Energy efficiency for several error correcting capabilities and packet length is also evaluated.

In this chapter, forward error correction (FEC) techniques for optical communications are described. In Sect. 17.1, the basic concepts of FEC and its terminology are explained. The various FECs developed to date for optical communications are classified as belonging to three generations. In Sect. 17.2, the first-generation FEC represented by RS(255,239) is described. The second-generation FECs are explained in Sect. 17.3, where recently developed concatenated codes are discussed. In Sect. 17.4, the third-generation FECs, which are more powerful FECs based on soft-decision decoding, are analyzed in detail. A block turbo code and low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes showing a record NCG of around 10 dB are discussed in detail. In Sect. 17.5, we compare each generation of FEC with the Shannon limit. The ultimate NCG is discussed as a function of code rate. FEC error count and its application are discussed in Sect. 17.6.

현재의 인터넷은 가변적인 대역폭과 패킷손실 그리고 지연으로 인하여 대화식 응용의 QoS 보장이 어렵다. 특히 최근에 정보의 기반구조로 중요성이 강조되고 있는 VOIP는 패킷손실률과 종점간지연이 클 때 통화품질이 크게 떨어지므로 네트웍 수준에서나 응용 수준에서 에러제어 기법이 요구된다. 인터넷 전화와 같은 대화식 응용을 위한 응용 수준의 에러 제어 기법으로 FEC(Forward Error Correction)가 가장 많이 사용되고 있는데, 이 기법은 주정보와 더불어 부가정보를 전송함으로서 패킷손실을 복구하는 방법으로 네트웍의 상태에 따라 적응적으로 부가정보의 양을 조절한다. 그러나 기존의 알고리즘들은 패킷손실률만을 고려하여 부가정보를 조절하였으며 부가 정보를 증가시킬 때 수반되는 종점간지연을 간과함으로써 통화품질을 떨어뜨리는 단점이 있다. 본 논문에서는 패킷손실률뿐만 아니라 종점간지연을 고려하는 FEC기반 에러제어 기법인 SCCRP (Selecting a Codec Combination using Reward and Penalty)를 제안한다. 실험 결과, SCCRP는 다른 알고리즘들에 비해 복구 후 패킷손실률은 물론 복구 후 종점간지연을 낮게 유지하였다. In the current Internet, the QoS of interactive applications is hardly guaranteed because of variable bandwidth, packet loss and delay. Moreover, VoIP which is becoming an important part of the information infra-structure in these days, is susceptible to network packet loss and end-to-end delay. Therefore, it needs error control mechanisms in network level or application level. The FEC-based error control mechanisms are used for interactive audio application such as VoIP. The FEC sends a main information along with redundant information to recover the lost packets and adjusts redundant information depending on network conditions to reduce the bandwidth overhead. However, because most of the error control mechanisms do not consider end-to-end delay but packet loss rate, their performances are poor. In this paper, we propose a new error control algorithm, SCCRP, considering packet loss rate as well as end-to-end delay. Through experiments, we confirm that the SCCRP has a lower packet loss rate and a lower end-to-end delay after reconstruction.

Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial second generation (DVB-T2) systems are increasingly deployed for high quality terrestrial broadcasting. However, low Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) conditions in urban and fringe coverage areas pose significant challenges, resulting in elevated Bit Error Rates (BER) and degraded service reliability. Forward Error Correction (FEC) techniques, particularly Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) and Bose Chaudhuri Hocquenghem (BCH) codes, play a crucial role in mitigating transmission errors and ensuring robust communication. This study investigates a systematic approach to optimizing LDPC and BCH FEC schemes to enhance transmission reliability and minimize BER under low-SNR conditions in DVB-T2 networks. Using simulation-based analyses, the study evaluates multiple LDPC code rates (e.g., 1/2, 2/3, 3/4) in combination with BCH codeword lengths and error-correcting capabilities. Results indicate that an optimized LDPC (64800, 32400) configuration combined with a BCH (255, 239) code significantly reduces BER, achieving approximately 10⁻⁵ at an SNR of 2 dB, compared to a BER of 10⁻³ using standard DVB-T2 FEC configurations. Additionally, iterative decoding algorithms for LDPC were fine-tuned to balance convergence speed and error correction performance, demonstrating a 25% reduction in decoding iterations without compromising reliability. The analysis also explores trade-offs between redundancy, throughput and latency, highlighting the practical considerations for real-world deployment. The findings underscore that strategic optimization of LDPC/BCH FEC parameters is critical for maintaining broadcast quality in low-SNR scenarios. By enhancing error resilience and reducing BER, the proposed approach improves signal integrity, supports consistent reception in fringe areas and maximizes spectrum efficiency. This work provides a foundation for adaptive FEC strategies in future DVB T2 systems, enabling broadcasters to deliver reliable high-definition content even under challenging channel conditions.

Cell rate moderation of VBR video under an FEC environment in ATM networks

In order to improve the data transmission reliability of mobile ad hoc network, a routing scheme called integrated forward error correction multipath routing protocol was proposed, which integrates the techniques of packet fragmenting and forward error correction encoding into multipath routing. The scheme works as follows: adding a certain redundancy into the original packets; fragmenting the resulting packets into exclusive blocks of the same size; encoding with the forward error correction technique, and then sending them to the destination node. When the receiving end receives a certain amount of information blocks, the original information will be recovered even with partial loss. The performance of the scheme was evaluated using OPNET modeler. The experimental results show that with the method the average transmission delay is decreased by 20% and the transmission reliability is increased by 30%.
