Range-Doppler Hand Gesture Recognition Using Deep Residual-3DCNN with Transformer Network

For hand gesture recognition (HGR) sensing based on frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar, it is challenging to cope with the ambiguity and variability of gesture motions performed by different peoples due to the private habits or position, which inevitably reduce the robustness of HGR sensing. To solve this problem, we propose a novel dual-flow fusion deformable residual network (DFDRN). More detailed gesture information, time frequency maps and spectrum map videos, are fed into DFDRN, which improves the generalization and motion modeling ability of HGR through the extensive feature space. To further improve the robustness of HGR sensing, the deformable block is exploited to replace the convolution. To focus on the important features of dual-flow fusion, the convolutional block attention module (CBAM) is embedded in the backbone of DFDRN. Experimental results show that the accuracy of DFDRN, which can reach 97.5%, is obviously better than the state-of-the-art HGR methods.

Hand gesture recognition is an important area of research in the field of Human Computer Interaction (HCI). The geometric attributes of the hand play an important role in hand shape reconstruction and gesture recognition. That said, fingertips are one of the important attributes for the detection of hand gestures and can provide valuable information from hand images. Many methods are available in scientific literature for fingertips detection with an open hand but very poor results are available for fingertips detection when the hand is closed. This paper presents a new method for the detection of fingertips in a closed hand using the corner detection method and an advanced edge detection algorithm. It is important to note that the skin color segmentation methodology did not work for fingertips detection in a closed hand. Thus the proposed method applied Gabor filter techniques for the detection of edges and then applied the corner detection algorithm for the detection of fingertips through the edges. To check the accuracy of the method, this method was tested on a vast number of images taken with a webcam. The method resulted in a higher accuracy rate of detections from the images. The method was further implemented on video for testing its validity on real time image capturing. These closed hand fingertips detection would help in controlling an electro-mechanical robotic hand via hand gesture in a natural way.

Hand gesture recognition aims to recognize the meaningful expressions of hand motion. It is widely used in information visualization, robotics, sign language understanding, medicine and healthcare. Some methods have been proposed for hand gesture recognition. But no single algorithm can handle all kinds of situations, because of the complex environment. In this study, we propose a hybrid method for hand gesture recognition, which extends our previous work on a gesture recognition method based on concept learning by the addition of an association learning process. We use association learning to reveal the frequent patterns in gesture sequences, and then use such patterns to help recognize incomplete gesture sequences. Experiments show the use of association learning does indeed improve recognition accuracy. Experiments also show the hybrid method is comparable to two state of the art methods (HMMs and DTW) for hand gesture recognition, but outperforms them in the larger datasets.

Human hand recognition plays an important role in a wide range of applications ranging from sign language translators, gesture recognition, augmented reality, surveillance and medical image processing to various Human Computer Interaction (HCI) domains. Human hand is a complex articulated object consisting of many connected parts and joints. Therefore, for applications that involve HCI one can find many challenges to establish a system with high detection and recognition accuracy for hand posture and/or gesture. Hand posture is defined as a static hand configuration without any movement involved. Meanwhile, hand gesture is a sequence of hand postures connected by continuous motions. During the past decades, many approaches have been presented for hand posture and/or gesture recognition. In this paper, we provide a survey on approaches which are based on Hidden Markov Models (HMM) for hand posture and gesture recognition for HCI applications.

The use of hand gestures provides a natural alternative to cumbersome interface devices for Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) systems. However, real-time recognition of dynamic micro hand gestures from video streams is challenging for in-vehicle scenarios since (i) the gestures should be performed naturally without distracting the driver, (ii) micro hand gestures occur within very short time intervals at spatially constrained areas, (iii) the performed gesture should be recognized only once, and (iv) the entire architecture should be designed lightweight as it will be deployed to an embedded system. In this work, we propose an HCI system for dynamic recognition of driver micro hand gestures, which can have a crucial impact in automotive sector especially for safety related issues. For this purpose, we initially collected a dataset named Driver Micro Hand Gestures (DriverMHG), which consists of RGB, depth and infrared modalities. The challenges for dynamic recognition of micro hand gestures have been addressed by proposing a lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) based architecture which operates online efficiently with a sliding window approach. For the CNN model, several 3-dimensional resource efficient networks are applied and their performances are analyzed. Online recognition of gestures has been performed with 3D-MobileNetV2, which provided the best offline accuracy among the applied networks with similar computational complexities. Hand gesture recognition methods play an important role in human-computer interaction. Among these methods are skeleton-based recognition techniques that seem to be promising. In literature, several methods have been proposed to recognize hand gestures with skeletons. One problem with these methods is that they consider little the connectivity between the joints of a skeleton, constructing simple graphs for skeleton connectivity. Observing this, we built a new model of hand skeletons by adding three types of edges in the graph to finely describe the linkage action of joints. Then, an end-to-end deep neural network, hand gesture graph convolutional network, is presented in which the convolution is conducted only on linked skeleton joints. Since the training dataset is relatively small, this work proposes expanding the coordinate dimensionality so as to let models learn more semantic features. Furthermore, relative coordinates are employed to help hand gesture graph convolutional network learn the feature representation independent of the random starting positions of actions. The proposed method is validated on two challenging datasets, and the experimental results show that it outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, it is relatively lightweight in practice for hand skeleton-based gesture recognition.

Hand gesture for communication has proven effective for humans, and active research is ongoing in replicating the same success in computer vision systems. Human–computer interaction can be significantly improved from advances in systems that are capable of recognizing different hand gestures. In contrast to many earlier works, which consider the recognition of significantly differentiable hand gestures, and therefore often selecting a few gestures from the American Sign Language (ASL) for recognition, we propose applying deep learning to the problem of hand gesture recognition for the whole 24 hand gestures obtained from the Thomas Moeslund’s gesture recognition database. We show that more biologically inspired and deep neural networks such as convolutional neural network and stacked denoising autoencoder are capable of learning the complex hand gesture classification task with lower error rates. The considered networks are trained and tested on data obtained from the above-mentioned public database; results comparison is then made against earlier works in which only small subsets of the ASL hand gestures are considered for recognition.

In this article, a novel method for continuous hand gesture detection and recognition is proposed based on a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar. Firstly, we adopt the 2-Dimensional Fast Fourier Transform (2D-FFT) to estimate the range and Doppler parameters of the hand gesture raw data, and construct the range-time map (RTM) and Doppler-time map (DTM). Meanwhile, we apply the Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) algorithm to calculate the angle and construct the angle-time map (ATM). Secondly, a hand gesture detection method is proposed to segment the continuous hand gestures using a decision threshold. Thirdly, the central time-frequency trajectory of each hand gesture spectrogram is clustered using the <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$k$ </tex-math></inline-formula> -means algorithm, and then the Fusion Dynamic Time Warping (FDTW) algorithm is presented to recognize the hand gestures. Finally, experiments show that the accuracy of the proposed hand gesture detection method can reach 96.17%. The hand gesture average recognition accuracy of the proposed FDTW algorithm is 95.83%, while its time complexity is reduced by more than 50%.

Hand gesture is one of the most popular communication methods in everyday life. In human-computer interaction applications, hand gesture recognition provides a natural way of communication between humans and computers. There are mainly two methods of hand gesture recognition: glove-based method and vision-based method. In this paper, we propose a vision-based hand gesture recognition method using Kinect. By using the depth information is efficient and robust to achieve the hand detection process. The finger labeling makes the system achieve pose classification according to the finger name and the relationship between each fingers. It also make the classification more effective and accutate. Two kinds of gesture sets can be recognized by our system. According to the experiment, the average accuracy of American Sign Language(ASL) number gesture set is 94.33%, and that of general gestures set is 95.01%. Since our system runs in real-time and has a high recognition rate, we can embed it into various applications.

The interaction between human and machine can be achieved by implementing human gesture applications which are known as human computer interaction (HCI). It has been developed several years ago, and now we can easily find it in many applications in real world e.g. in virtual reality, games, robotics, sign language recognition, etc. Gesture recognition has the potential to offer a natural way of communication between humans and machines. The most popular methods in human gesture application are hand gesture recognition. Several of hand gesture recognition methods still have the same problem when trying to recognize hand gesture accurately because of the existence of the uncontrolled environment problem, especially complex background. This study offered a method that can handle complex background in hand gesture recognition by analyzing pattern in spatio temporal domain. The system could reduce irregular noise in complex background significantly that affected to recognize the hand gesture. The experiment had been conducted using 180 videos with a total of 15 gestures. The result showed that the proposed method could recognize 15 hand gestures with accuracy of 98.33%.

We propose in this work a dynamic group sparsity (DGS) based time-frequency feature extraction method for dynamic hand gesture recognition (HGR) using millimeter-wave radar sensors. Micro-Doppler signatures of hand gestures show both sparse and structured characteristics in time-frequency domain, but previous study only focus on sparsity. We firstly introduce the structured prior when modeling the micro-Doppler signatures in this work to further enhance the features of hand gestures. The time-frequency distributions of dynamic hand gestures are first modeled using a dynamic group sparse model. A DGS-Subspace Pursuit (DGS-SP) algorithm is then utilized to extract the corresponding features. Finally, the support vector machine (SVM) classifier is employed to realize the dynamic HGR based on the extracted group sparse micro-Doppler features. The experiment shows that the proposed method achieved 3.3% recognition accuracy improvement over the sparsity-based method and has a better recognition accuracy than CNN based method in small dataset.

BISINDO is one of Indonesian sign language, which do not have many facilities to implement. Because it can cause deaf people have difficulty to live their daily life. Therefore, this research tries to offer an recognition or translation system of the BISINDO alphabet into a text. The system is expected to help deaf people to communicate in two directions. In this study the problems encountered is small datasets. Therefore this research will do the testing of hand gesture recognition, by comparing two model CNN algorithms, that is LeNet-5 and Alexnet. This test will look for which classification technique is better if the dataset conditions in an amount that does not reach 1000 images in each class. After testing, the results found that the CNN technique on the Alexnet architectural model is better to used, this is because when doing the testing process by using still-image and Alexnet model data which has been released in training process, Alexnet model data gives greater prediction results that is equal to 76%. While the LeNet model is only able to predict with the percentage of 19%. The aim of this study is to develop a new method for hand gesture recognition using Leap Motion via deterministic learning. Efficient and accurate extraction and representation of gesture features are achieved. The recognition approach consists of two stages: a training stage and a recognition stage. In the training stage, hand gesture features representing hand motion dynamics, including spatial position and direction of fingers, are derived from Leap Motion. Hand motion dynamics underlying motion patterns of different gestures which represent Arabic numbers (0-9) are locally accurately modeled and approximated by radial basis function (RBF) neural networks. The obtained knowledge of approximated hand motion dynamics is stored in constant RBF networks. In the recognition stage, a bank of dynamical estimators is constructed for all the training patterns. Prior knowledge of hand motion dynamics represented by the constant RBF networks is embedded in the estimators. By comparing the set of estimators with a test gesture pattern to be recognized, a set of recognition errors are generated. The average Li norms of the errors are taken as the recognition measure between the dynamics of the training gesture patterns and the dynamics of the test gesture pattern according to the smallest error principle. Finally, experiments are carried out to demonstrate the high recognition performance of the proposed method. By using the 2-fold and 10-fold cross-validation styles, the correct recognition rates are reported to be 94.2% and 95.1%, respectively.

Considerable effort has been put toward the development of intelligent and natural interfaces between users and computer systems. In line with this endeavor, several modes of information (e.g., visual, audio, and pen) that are used either individually or in combination have been proposed. The use of gestures to convey information is an important part of human communication. Hand gesture recognition is widely used in many applications, such as in computer games, machinery control (e.g., crane), and thorough mouse replacement. Computer recognition of hand gestures may provide a natural computer interface that allows people to point at or to rotate a computer-aided design model by rotating their hands. Hand gestures can be classified into two categories: static and dynamic. The use of hand gestures as a natural interface serves as a motivating force for research on gesture taxonomy, its representations, and recognition techniques. This paper summarizes the surveys carried out in human--computer interaction (HCI) studies and focuses on different application domains that use hand gestures for efficient interaction. This exploratory survey aims to provide a progress report on static and dynamic hand gesture recognition (i.e., gesture taxonomies, representations, and recognition techniques) in HCI and to identify future directions on this topic.
