(Re)call and Response: Organizing with Community-University Talks

In the current era, the development of the mining industry is in direct confrontation with members of the community, who first live near the site, which will be mined. In this case, unlike in the New Order era, in the current era, local members have the freedom to oppose development around where they live. It is also experienced by the company who want to open gold mining, in the mountains Tumpang Pitu, Pesanggaran, Banyuwangi. The company's efforts are opposed by members of the local community. Gaining opposition from local community members, the mining company responded by running corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs. However, in response to the offer of CSR programs of the company, the community members responded in the form of a fight over to gain agree among themselves, ie between CSR refusers and CSR recipients. The CSR refusalists wish that members of society who receive CSR abandon their choice of attitude and move on in their footsteps. Meanwhile, the CSR recipients wish that CSR's refusers will allow themselves to determine their will. Therefore, this thesis focuses on finding the answers to the following questions: "how are the strategies of be agree operated by each party of the community members, ie between CSR refusers and CSR recipients, in response to CSR programs of mining companies". This research uses qualitative method. The research scope is Pancer sub-village and Silirbaru sub-village, Sumber Agung village, which is the area where the mining company was founded. The unit of analysis of this research is the language used by members of local communities, both who refuse CSR or recaive CSR in both sub-villages. Methods of collecting data in this study using in-depth interview techniques. Methods of data processing, using restory techniques. And, method of data analysis using thick description. The results of the field findings indicate that in a battle with each other, each party, members of the community use certain discourses. The CSR refusers use the "pro-contra mining" discourse in operating the strategy of be agree to the recipients of the CSR, while the latter uses the discourse of "national people-counter people" and "economic responsibility" in operating behind the strategy of be agree to the party First of all. In operating the strategy of be agree itself, the CSR refusers applies the panopticon technique, ie, total oversight of the CSR recipients. In addition, applying total control, the CSR refusers also uses interpellation techniques. In this case, the CSR refusers operates a total interpellation to the CSR recipients. The effect of the panopticon technique makes CSR recipients experience a self-control situation. To that end, when the position has been pressed, CSR recipients interpellate CSR refusers with the discourse of "national people-counter people" and the discourse of "economic responsibility". The result, they run coexistently.

Background: Although breast cancer mortality rates have been steadily decreasing over time, Black and Latina women continue to have the highest death rate and shortest survival of any racial and ethnic groups in the United States for breast cancers. Most scholars agree, however, that the major cause of this disparity is more likely to be diagnosed with late (vs. early) stage breast cancers that are less responsive to treatment. This disparity in cancer-stage-at-diagnosis reflects Black and Latina women's lower prevalence of breast cancer screening that could detect cancers at earlier, curable stages. Pitt and Edgecombe Counties, located in a rural disadvantaged part of Eastern North Carolina (ENC), maintain breast cancer disparities among its minority women as compared to their white counterparts. Breast cancer incidence among minority women is lower compared to white women for both counties, however the mortality rate for minority women is twice as high compared to their white counterparts (42.4 vs. 21.9 respectively) in Pitt county and slightly higher in Edgecombe county (37.3 vs. 36.7 respectively). Pitt County also has the highest breast cancer mortality rate among minority women and Edgecombe has the fifth highest in Eastern NC. Furthermore, minority women are diagnosed at later stages of the disease, with the rate of diagnosis at stage 4 being almost three times higher than white women in Pitt County and significantly higher in Edgecombe County. This community-based breast health intervention (The Pitt County Breast Wellness Initiative-Education) works to reduce these health disparities in breast cancer mortality through provision of education and navigation to early detection and access to screening for uninsured and underinsured Black and Latina women in Edgecombe and Pitt Counties in NC. Methods: The Pitt County Breast Wellness Initiative-Education provides culturally tailored breast cancer education and navigation to age-appropriate screening services for uninsured/underinsured Black and Latina women age 25 and older in Pitt and Edgecombe Counties, North Carolina. Using a lay health model (adapted from North Carolina Breast Cancer Screening Program Training Curriculum), we trained eight community members on breast health, breast cancer, and being an effective breast health educator. The education component includes a brief 10-minute presentation on breast health, breast cancer, and guidelines for age-appropriate breast cancer screening services. The navigation component includes assistance with the following: (1) Breast Health Assessment Tool and BCCCP applications, (2) scheduling appointments/accessing age-appropriate breast screening services, (3) interpretation, and (4) transportation. Since our program initiation in April 2015, we have educated 85 women and navigated 47 to age-appropriate breast cancer screening services in Pitt and Edgecombe counties. Results: Among the 47 navigated women to age-appropriate screening, 78% (n=37) were 40 years of age or older, 82% (n=39) reported being uninsured, 32% (n=15) reported no previous clinical breast exam, and 38% (n=18) reported no previous mammogram. Among those who reported a having a previous mammogram, many were 2 years or more over due for their yearly mammogram. We use pre-/post-surveys to determine an increase in knowledge and awareness regarding breast health, breast cancer, and guidelines for age-appropriate breast cancer screening services. Up-to-date results from program participants will be reported during the presentation. Conclusion: Specifically, using a LHA community-based model allows this program to serve as a cultural mediation between underserved communities in Pitt and Edgecombe counties and health care service systems and reduces structural barriers in accessing screening services and diagnostic follow-up. Strong collaborative community partnerships will streamline the process of accessing care in an effort to ensure seamless transition within the continuum of breast cancer care. Issue Educational achievement, health, and well-being among children varies greatly. Early interventions in primary education are among the most effective policy tools to reduce such gaps. A coherent and cross sectoral school approach, as well as a specialized school leadership, can promote social equality among pupils. Description of the problem A lower secondary school in Mid-Norway discovered problems related to social exclusion and well-being among the pupils. Between 2020 and 2023 the school engaged its employees, pupils, parents, and broader local community in a common dialogue and learning process about diversity and mental health. In order to understand whether and how this intervention impact on a) pupils’ well-being, sense of inclusion and social cohesion, and b) attitudes and behavior among pupils, parents, school employees and the community members, interviews with principal and pupils were conducted, as well as surveys among pupils, school employees, parents, and local community members. Results The pupils experienced that the school environment became more inclusive, positive, and supportive. They reported less bullying, bad language and social exclusion, and improved cohesion and wellbeing at school. The problems turned out to be embedded in both the school and broader local community context. A large share of the pupils, school employees, parents, and local community members reported that they had changed towards more inclusive attitudes and behavior, and that they had become more socially included in the local community. Lessons The intervention promoted a culture of inquiry within the school context, where active and critical engagement generated personal meaning and mutual understanding. The school became a ‘community active school', linking pupils, parents, school employees and the extended local community in meaningful dialogue and activities, promoting social inclusion and wellbeing in a powerful way. Key messages • A culture of inquiry in the school context can address and promote public health issues among pupils. • A ‘community active’ school can be a powerful means to promote social inclusion and well-being in school as well as within the broader local community context.

BackgroundAhead of opening Portugal’s first mobile drug consumption room (MDCR) in Lisbon, information from People Who Use Drugs (PWUD) and local community members was necessary to determine current needs and shape the intervention. A participatory and peer-led process was ensured at all stages of data gathering and planning of the intervention.MethodsProspective clients were surveyed to determine their willingness to use the service and preferences for use and to gain sociodemographic information. Persons over the age of 18 who reported injection drug use (PWID) were recruited using convenience sampling in the main open drug use scenes in Lisbon. In-person interviews were conducted by trained peer workers between November and December of 2017. The results (n = 72) of the questionnaires were analyzed, providing descriptive statistics.ResultsThere is a high level of willingness to use the MDCR, primarily for reasons of hygiene, privacy, and security. Most participants expressed a desire to use the MDCR daily. Potential clients are socially marginalized, and many suffer from unstable housing. Most are daily users and engage in unsafe injecting practices, such as public injecting and material sharing. High levels of hepatitis C, HIV, and hepatitis B were observed among the target population with low levels of healthcare access and utilization. Preferences were gauged regarding the scheduling of the MDCR’s hours and amount of time willing to travel to reach the MDCR and will be taken into account for implementation. The combination of high levels of willingness to utilize the service and high levels of need among the target population support the implementation of Lisbon’s first MDCR.ConclusionsContinual participation of PWUD and other community members will be necessary to maximize the public health and social impacts of this intervention, relative to this baseline. The plan to continue the participatory and peer-led development of the MDCR includes integrating peer workers, clients, and local community members within the operation, management, and evaluation of the service. This research adds to a growing literature about drug consumption rooms (DCRs) in Europe, which is especially limited concerning MDCRs.

Stakeholders’ perspectives on girls’ early marriage in Maneh and Samalqan, Iran

The Model Cities Program was launched as a part of President Lyndon B. Johnson's War on Poverty in 1968; its purpose was to provide increased financial resources and improve living conditions to urban communities. The Model Cities Program intended to bring city officials and local communities together to discuss unresolved issues that had been affecting city neighborhoods. Los Angeles became a participant of the program, particularly its eastern neighborhoods that contained a significant Latinx/Hispanic population. However, the efforts to improve East Los Angeles’s Latinx neighborhoods failed due to the poor organization and lack of centralization in leadership. Public projects were not completed and never received the entirety of proposed funding grants. My research intends to explore the progression of the Model Cities Program in East Los Angeles in the years 1969 to 1973. In particular, I will analyze the consequences of its flawed organization and local community members' perception of the program’s failure. I draw on media publications and city records ranging from the period. These sources reveal how the program gradually shifted away from productive planning and became ineffective; this prompted community criticism. I argue that the issues of Los Angeles’s Model City Program encouraged local Latinx communities throughout the city’s eastern neighborhoods to reconsider their relationships with institutional organizations. These communities instead chose to focus their efforts on community-established services and projects.

Although Bangladesh’s immense steps in preparing the disaster management policies following the values of good governance issue, the quantity to which these policies have productively been executing at the local level remnants mostly unknown. The objectives of this investigation were dual: firstly, to inspect the roles and efficiency of the local-level governance and disaster management organization, and lastly, to recognize the obstacles to the execution of national the policies and Disaster-Risk-Reduction guidelines at the local community level. The authors applied qualitative research and case Study approach, using techniques from the Participatory Rural Appraisal toolbox to collect data from local community members as well as government and NGO officials. From the finding of the study, it was revealed that interactive disaster governance, decentralization of disaster management, and compliance by local-level institutions with good governance principles and national policy guidelines can be extremely effective in reducing disaster-loss and damages. According to coastal community members, the local governments have generally failed to uphold good governance principles, and triangulated data confirm that the region at large suffers from rampant corruption, political favoritism, lack of transparency and accountability and minimal inclusion of local inhabitants in decision-making – all of which have severely impeded the successful implementation of national disaster-management policies. This study contributes to these research gaps, with identification of further research agenda in these areas. The paper deals with International Sendai Framework that called for enhancement of local level community resilience to disasters. Thus, it contributes to numerous policy and practice areas relating to good disaster governance. The study identified the specific manifestations of these failures in coastal communities in Bangladesh. These results underscore the vital need to address the wide gap between national DRR goals and the on-the-ground realities of policy implementation to successfully enhance the country’s resilience to climate change-induced disasters.

Canada’s growing population of international students brings ethnolinguistic diversity and socioeconomic benefits to their host communities. However, students often experience social exclusion and lack of belonging, reporting little communication with local community members for many cultural, ethnic, and religious reasons. The present study, conducted in Montreal, investigated the role of international students’ second language speech in local community members’ perception of the social roles that students can assume in a host society (e.g., friend, neighbour, colleague). Four English- and French-speaking international students’ recordings were presented to 38 francophones, all non-student residents of Montreal, who evaluated the students’ comprehensibility and accentedness and assessed how acceptable these students were in various social roles (e.g., friend, neighbour, colleague) in two languages (French vs. English) and in two situations (making a request vs. making a potentially controversial statement). The students’ ratings were greater when they spoke French than English (regardless of speech content) and when they requested help than when they expressed a controversial statement (regardless of language). Social ratings were generally associated with comprehensibility, not accentedness, where more comprehensible speech was linked to greater perceived acceptability. Findings highlight the importance of sociolinguistic context and language in local residents’ judgments of international students’ social roles.

Reparative Public Musicology: Empowering and Centering Community Knowledge Production through Counter-Storytelling Practice

An initiative has been developed by an oilfield services company to share its health, safety, and environment (HSE) knowledge and expertise with families and local communities, who in turn reinforce a HSE culture among employees, which helps make such a culture become a lifestyle habit for all. The initiative, "HSE for Youth", is a program designed to reach young people aged between 11 and 18. It focuses on seven themes: Injury Prevention, Road Safety, Personal Security, HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Water and Climate Change. Workshops are designed to be easy-to-implement and low cost, and are facilitated by volunteer employees, spouses and motivated people in the community. Participants include children of employees, clients, and members of local communities. This paper explains how the worldwide program was established, and how materials were developed based on the company's HSE expertise, as well as on external public health and educational expertise. All content is learner-centered and is flexible and adaptable to local contexts yet is framed by the company's corporate quality control system. Several hundred children have participated since the program was launched in 2008. The paper also describes a local adaptation of the program in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru called "HSE for Kids", tailored to reach a younger audience and their parents, and already implemented in seventeen offices and operational bases.

The Pakbeh Regional Economy Program centered at the ancient Maya trading center of Chunchucmil in Yucatán, México, shifted research priorities from a processual program aimed at recovering indicators of ancient ethnic identification to a more community-based program that combines processual methodologies with a local desire for community-based tourism. Initial research goals concerned the elucidation of how a trading economy affected other aspects of the social life of ancient Chunchucmil. As members of the two Yucatec Maya communities on either side of the ruins became more interested in the archaeological research, and as archaeologists grappled with the rise of tourism in Yucatán, a dialogue about who controls and benefits from the production of archaeological knowledge ensued. Currently the project is involved in collaborative development of a 'living museum' where members of local communities and archaeologists will mutually recreate an ancient Maya household on the archaeological site. Some programmatic suggestions for further collaboration between academic archaeologists and local descendant communities in the Maya area are offered.

This article aims to examine the changes in concept, development and practices of community art in the Western culture from the end of 20th century to the beginning of 21st century, and based on theory of dialogical aesthetics by Grant H. Kester as well as using methodical examples of practicing artists, such as Jeanne van Heeswijk and the cultural association “Artway of Thinking“ (Stefania Mantovani and Federica Thiene), evaluate cases of community art projects taking place in Lithuania, especially focusing on the initiatives of the creative project “Friendly Zone“. The notion of Grant H. Kester“™s dialogical aesthetics as a dialogue-based socially-engaged creative practice helps to reveal forms and directions of socially-engaged art practices which are relevant today. Examining the project “Friendly Zone“, which takes part in S anciai (district of Kaunas, Lithuania), we can see a clear example of creative practice based on dialogical aesthetics with an ethical access to local inhabitants and their concerns. By working together with well-known community and socially-engaged art experts, Vita Gelūnienė and Edmund Carroll aim to apply methods of dialogical creativity: co-creative diagram of ““Artway of Thinking“ displays four stages of activities. It starts with self-recognition and placement of each member of the team as well as naming their functions in collective practice. Later, the context (place) is explored and monitored. Then, ideas are generated and implemented, the results of which are integrated. The artists also use the principle of a “headquarter“ from Jeanne van Heeswijk“™s practice, creating a certain meeting and dialogue-based point (house or inflatable tent) in public art projects. The text points out these advantages of the project: long-term effects and artists“™ residency in the area. The long-term project “Friendly Zone“, taking place in a single district, allows to test different creative methods involving public art, creates an environment of trust between local inhabitants and art initiatives taking place in the area. The process of examining and observing becomes a permanent task and, even, a way of life for the people involved. Nonetheless, difficulties and challenges also exist: the passivity of the members of local community towards certain activities as well as communication with both the outside (the press) and the local community. In both cases, this model of activity is not seen as the end in itself. Thus, it is necessary to strengthen the role of mediators by including people with skills of public relations into the team.

Nash Black Lactation Aesthetics: Remaking the Natural in Lakisha Cohill’s Photographs In her 1992 essay “Selling Hot Pussy,” bell hooks recounts entering a “late night dessert place” with a group of colleagues who all began to laugh at a shelf of “gigantic chocolate breasts complete with nipples— huge edible tits.”1 For hooks, the chocolate Black breasts are mammy imagery, a “displaced longing for a racist past when the bodies of black women were a commodity, available to anyone white who could pay the price.”2 For her white colleagues, the chocolate breasts are simply comical . Her colleagues’ response—their willingness to consume, laugh, and ignore racial, gendered, sexual violence—constitutes the racialized visual marketplace that hooks’s essay seeks to both describe and dismantle . The chocolate breasts become a rhetorical point of entry into hooks’s critical engagement with a visual marketplace where Black female bodies are delectable and disposable objects. hooks’s analysis has become part of a canon of Black feminist work exploring how Black breasts get taken up as signs of pathology, “excess flesh,” sexual deviance, hypersexuality , and alterity.3 From histories of the so-called Hottentot Venus and the preoccupation with her breasts, buttocks, and genitalia—including 1. bell hooks, “Selling Hot Pussy,” Black Looks: Race and Representation (Boston: South End Press, 1992), 61. 2. hooks, 61–62. 3. Denean Sharpley-Whiting4 —to scholarship on the construction of black women’s imagined corporeality as “social dead weight” by Sabrina Strings, Black feminists have given critical attention to the construction of Black breasts as the location of Black women’s imagined racial and sexual difference.5 If Black breasts have been culturally and scientifically constructed as deviant, excessive, pornographic, and desirous, they have largely been uncoupled from an identification with nutrition—from the capacity to sustain and feed babies—except their connection with wet nursing and their conscription into maternal labor for white children. In this imaginary , Black breasts provide nutrition only when recruited as white property , with their nurturance capacity oriented toward white health and futurity. We might understand the cultural inability to interpret Black breasts as nurturing Black life as part of what Andrea Freeman describes as the “unmothering” of Black women, the unseeing of Black maternity except to elevate it as a symbol of brokenness or pathology.6 But in recent years, as I argue in my forthcoming book Birthing Black Mothers, Black breasts have entered the US cultural imagination anew. Black breasts are increasingly viewed as in need of support through seemingly benign state interventions to encourage Black breastfeeding. Indeed, Black breasts are recruited by an array of actors who often find themselves strangely aligned to champion Black breastfeeding —including NGOs, public health campaigns, and reproductive justice efforts spearheaded by Black feminists—precisely because Black breastfeeding is thought to perform urgent political, emotional, and 4. Black southern women’s retrospection within the works of Remember2019 is an engagement with the artistic contributions of Black women to the Remember2019 project. Remember2019 is a multi-modular performance-based memorial effort centering the stories and futures of Black Phillips County, Arkansas community members. In the wake of the 1919 Elaine Massacre, the Remember2019 project has followed the cultural strategies of Ida B. Wells-Barnett and Black women leaders in Phillips County to create spaces for self-determination, memory, and reflection. This essay follows the work of the eight-year long project to date and marks the cultural strategies and voices of its closest Black women collaborators.

Purpose:Afghanistan, as one of the world’s largest producers of narcotics, faces significant social, economic, and health challenges. This research aims to identify and analyze the successful experiences in narcotics eradication in local Afghan communities and to evaluate the factors contributing to these successes.Methodology:A qualitative methodology was employed, utilizing semi-structured interviews with local community members, experts, and government officials. The data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis.Findings:The research findings indicate that educational programs, awareness-raising initiatives, the development of alternative economic opportunities, and active community participation have played crucial roles in reducing narcotics cultivation and consumption. Nevertheless, financial constraints, administrative corruption, and cultural resistance remain significant barriers to successfully implementing these programs.Implication:The study concludes that with increased international support, administrative transparency, and strengthened educational and economic programs, the dependency of local communities on narcotics cultivation can be significantly reduced. This research provides a foundation for the development of effective national policies in the fight against narcotics in Afghanistan.
