Recent developments on machining fixture layout design, analysis, and optimization using finite element method and evolutionary techniques

Fixture layout for machining thin-walled structures plays an important role in fixture performance. This work focuses on the optimization design of machining fixture layout including clamp layout and the layout of support heads. A universal optimization methodology that can automatically generate the optimal machining fixture layout is proposed. The optimization of fixture layout is implemented based on the criteria of minimizing maximum deflection of the thin-walled workpiece while remain relatively small torque caused by the clamping tables. An evolutionary algorithm is employed to solve the fixture layout optimization for the optimal solution. The optimal position of the support heads and the layout of clamping tables obtained from this work vary along with the change of cutting force. To validate the proposed optimization methodology, a fixture layout design for a typical thin-walled structure is optimized as an example. The case study demonstrates the application of the proposed approach in the fixture layout design for thin-walled structures, which is beneficial to design an optimal fixture layout.

This article proposes a general fixture layout design framework that directly integrates the system equation with the convex relaxation method. Note that the optimal fixture design problem is a large-scale combinatorial optimization problem; we relax it to a convex Semi-Definite Programming (SDP) problem by adopting sparse learning and SDP relaxation techniques. It can be solved efficiently by existing convex optimization algorithms and thus generates a near-optimal fixture layout. A real case study in the half-to-half fuselage assembly process indicates the superiority of our proposed algorithm compared to the current industry practice and state-of-art methods.

Fixtures are the work-holding devices, widely used in manufacturing, to completely immobilize the workpiece during machining. The position of fixture elements around the workpiece strongly influences the workpiece deformation which in-turn affects the machining accuracy. The workpiece deformation can be minimized by finding the appropriate position for the locators and clamps. Thus, it is necessary to model the complex behavioral relationship that exists in the fixture–workpiece system. In this research paper, response surface methodology is used to model the relationship between position of locators and clamps and maximum deformation of the workpiece during end-milling, and then the developed model has been optimized by genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization. As the predictive model is being developed by response surface methodology, a huge reduction in computational complexity and time is achieved during the optimization of machining fixture layout. Also, it is evident that the approach which integrates response surface methodology and particle swam optimization produces better results.

Fixture Layout Design (FLD) determines the specific position of locators and clamps to orient and holds the workpiece with respect to a machine tool. The FLD approaches that use Finite Element Analysis (FEA) have been widely used in previous works and have become computationally expensive and specific to a particular problem. Further, the FLD and clamping force optimization were often performed separately by ignoring their interdependence. In the present work, the locators' contact forces are uniformly distributed by suitably varying the fixture layout and clamping force to maximize the part dimensional and form quality. The parametric rigid body model is used to depict the behaviour of the workpiece-fixture system, and it is incorporated with the genetic algorithm to optimize the design variables. A prismatic workpiece with pocket milling operation is considered to validate the proposed methodology. Stability criterion and tool-fixture interference are considered constraints. Subsequently, FEA is used to verify the integrity of the proposed approach. The results infer that the uniform distribution of maximum elastic deformation is achieved due to the uniform distribution of contact forces. The suggested approach is proven effective for designing a milling fixture to manufacture components with high dimensional and form precision.

Appropriate fixture design could lower process time, lower cost, and improve the quality of products. This paper proposes a case-based reasoning (CBR) method, with improved indexing and retrieving approaches which are critical issues in machining fixture design systems. A case storage for fixture design case indexing approach is developed so that the database is constructed into two levels—to manage and categorize numerous related fixture designs. The data includes existing workpieces and associated fixture planning and unit depository as solutions. Based on this approach, a CBR method with a two-step case retrieval is presented. The objective is to improve searching results in database for machining fixture design. In this CBR-based fixture design method, the appropriate workpiece in the first level of database by using design requirement is found. Then, the proper conceptual fixture design can be achieved by retrieving related fixture case from the second level. This method facilitates the fixture designing by means of referencing past design cases to generate a conceptual fixture design quickly and easily. It also helps in the finishing design by suggesting some alternative fixture cases. Finally, several case studies are used to validate and present the applicability and usability of the proposed approach.

Optimisation of fixture layout is critical to reduce geometric and form error of the workpiece during the machining process. In this paper the optimal placement of fixture elements (locator and clamp locations) under dynamic conditions is investigated using evolutionary techniques. The application of the newly developed particle swarm optimisation (PSO) algorithm and widely used genetic algorithm (GA) is presented to minimise elastic deformation of the workpiece considering its dynamic response. To improve the performances of GA and PSO, an improved GA (IGA) obtained by basic GA (GA) with sharing and adaptive mutation and an improved PSO (IPSO) obtained by basic PSO (PSO) incorporated into adaptive mutation are developed. ANSYS parametric design language (APDL) of finite element analysis is employed to compute the objective function for a given fixture layout. Three layout optimisation cases derived from the high speed slot milling case are used to test the effectiveness of the GA, IGA, PSO and IPSO based approaches. The comparisons of computational results show that IPSO seems superior to GA, IGA and PSO approaches with respect to the trade-off between global optimisation capability and convergence speed for the presented type problems.

Here we present a short review of recently developed low-cost microfluidic devices aimed towards medical diagnostic applications. This review specifically focuses on three inexpensive devices, namely lab-on-a-compact-disc, paper-based, and thread-based devices. Here, we present a concise summary of all the recently developed protocols for simple bioassays to complex diagnostics. We also provide a new outlook on how the present practice of pathological diagnostics can be improved with the usage of such recent developments.

Fixture layout is the fundamental task of fixture design, to determine the number, type, and location of the basic fixturing elements of locators, supports, and clamps, as opposed to the detailed design of the fixture assembly. This paper describes an approach based on a novel technique of optimal pursuit to the layout problem. The focus of the paper is on effective fixture modeling and efficient numerical techniques for automatically generating, analyzing, and optimizing fixture layout designs for any complex-shaped 3D workpieces.

A crucial factor in the success of developing integrated manufacturing systems lies in the ability to exchange information among the various computer-aided systems. Although a vast amount of research has been conducted on computer-aided fixture design systems, the need for information exchange between a fixture design system and other manufacturing systems has not been dealt with thoroughly. Models for the exchange of information within an enterprise or within an extended enterprise depend on the functionality and behaviour of individual enterprises. One means of developing an information model for an enterprise is to determine the information requirements by modelling the enterprise. However, this results in a monolithic model that is only applicable to that enterprise. As a solution to this drawback, we describe the development of a reference model for fixture design information support, which can be instantiated to be applied to different types of enterprises. We concentrate on machining fixtures and information form the fixture design domain to other domains.

Fixture design is a critical step in machining. An important aspect of fixture design is the optimization of the fixture, the primary objective being the minimization of workpiece deflection by suitably varying the layout of fixture elements and the clamping forces. Previous methods for fixture design optimization have treated fixture layout and clamping force optimization independently and/or used nonlinear programming methods that yield sub-optimal solutions. This paper deals with application of the genetic algorithm (GA) for fixture layout and clamping force optimization for a compliant workpiece. An iterative algorithm that minimizes the workpiece elastic deformation for the entire cutting process by alternatively varying the fixture layout and clamping force is proposed. It is shown via an example of milling fixture design that this algorithm yields a design that is superior to the result obtained from either fixture layout or clamping force optimization alone.
