Research Methods for Education

Qualitative Research Methods in Education and Educational Technology was written for students and scholars interested in exploring the many qualitative methods developed over the last 50 years in the social sciences. The book does not stop, however, at the boundaries of the social sciences. Social scientists now consume and use research methods from many fields. The rich resources of research methods and theories from both the humanities and philosophy are also covered in this book. It explains why postpositivist quantitative research should not be "the only game in town" and provides solid theoretical foundations, beginning with the positions of Plato and Aristotle, for broadening our horizons about what warrants our attention. Using Aristotle's concept of phronesis the author shows why methods such as narrative research and storytelling, hermeneutic inquiry, literary theory, philosophical inquiry, and much more have important applications in education and educational technology. On those foundations, the author also builds a framework for doing many types of research ȓ from participatory action research to content analysis, to postmodern case studies, to empowerment research and philosophical inquiry. He accomplishes this through a combination of original text, summaries of exemplary research in education and educational technology, and suggested readings that are annotated and introduced at the end of each chapter. Many of these readings are available online and they extend the discussion of research methods or serve as exemplars of a particular type of educational technology research. There are open ended and conceptual questions for each reading, and developing your own answers to them is one way you can extend your depth of understanding about qualitative research methods in education and educational technology.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the possibility and significance of genealogy as an educational research method. This paper analyzed the concepts and characteristics of genealogy, and explored examples of research using genealogical methodology. Through this, the meaning and significance of genealogy as an educational research method are discussed and strategies for utilizing genealogy as an educational research tool are suggested. 
 Genealogy is the work of tracing the origins of knowledge about current concepts and of analyzing changes. It is a tool that can analyze that the knowledge we take for granted is not spontaneous but contains power relations. In particular, if genealogy is used as an educational research tool, it will be possible to be of help in conceptual reconstruction and practical development.
 The strategies for using genealogy as an educational research method are as follows. First, research starts by raising questions about the concept. Second, in order to collect data, a wide and vast amount of data is collected. Third, during the analysis, concepts are deconstructed and critically analyzed. Fourth, interpretation is done with the subjectivity of the researcher in mind. Fifth, in the writing stage, the researcher constantly reflects on themself.
 If we use genealogy when conducting educational research, we will be able to seriously reflect on the educational problems we are currently facing, and this will help us come up with new alternatives. This is expected to contribute to individual growth and to innovative changes in the education system.

ABSTRACTResearch methods education is a challenging area for lecturers and students to engage with; students regularly demonstrate negative dispositions to research methods and lecturers struggle with issues such as curriculum marginalisation. However, employers increasingly demand graduates equipped with skills as researchers. Consequently, in university-based higher education, there has been investment to support research and good practice in this area. In contrast, limited attention has been paid to research methods education in college-based higher education. We report the outcomes of a small-scale national study designed to capture contemporary insights in research methods provision in college-based higher education. Drawing on data from two national surveys, we report student attitudes to, and experiences of, research methods and strategies employed by lecturers to teach and assess research methods. Students demonstrate positive attitudes to research methods, receptive to their research methods education and can see their applicability to ‘real life’ situations. However, the data demonstrate that the breadth of their research methods education is limited, potentially having implications for the development of skills such as critical evaluation of research outcomes, and students longer-term development as researchers. We conclude by highlighting future research directions and curriculum development to promote research methods education in college-based higher education.

This study aimed to explore the boundaries and differences between art, a field that researchers have consistently explored as they transition between disciplines such as art, art therapy, art education, and child studies. This approach seeks to understand the essence of artistic experience through narrative reflection and phenomenological research. This approach aims to explore new directions for Converged in Arts & Creativity Education. To achieve this, the research method focused on “metaphorical projection,” a productive principle of literary thought. The exhibition, which featured artworks expressed through the picture book “The Dot,” and applied John Bradshaw's “Inner Child” theory, was designed as a convergence art exhibition. This study explored the exhibition's history, in which the researcher participated as a curator, artist, and docent, as well as audience interviews. Through the integrated experience of the creative arts convergence exhibition, the researcher identified the need for a medium that reflects individual experiences within the social context of art education and artistic experience. Moreover, the study suggested that art experiences mediated by picture books could be utilized as an art-based research method in everyday life and education. Moreover, it is significant in that it re-examines the creative value of literature as an artistic experience that fuses memories and emotions, which are subjective experiences of individuals, through the metaphorical relationship that exists between picture books and readers, and suggests new possibilities and directions for Converged in Arts & Creativity Education based on this.

During the past few decades, several interconnected research traditions have paid more and more attention to the process of educational design. Educational design research and other design-oriented methods seek solutions for complex educational problems through systematic, iterative, and continuing process of design, development, and evaluation of educational practices. This special issue presents six articles including research on educational design research methodology as well as research utilizing educational design research methods.

Exploring Digital Literacy in Research Methods for Postgraduate Design Education: A preliminary observation of its introduction to architectural research course

Along with the promotion and deepening of “Nine Year Joint Curriculum” in Taiwan, the trend of “student centered learning” in education has been greatly emphasized. Students are expected to take initiative roll in their study. In science and technology learning area, inquiry teaching method is the most popular and important way to achieve the curriculum goal. This research focuses on the learning effects of “Sound” unit with the adoption of an improved inquiry teaching method, also the differences caused by gender in students’ learning effect. At the end of the research, students’ feedbacks were collected and analyzed for researcher’s references and future study. One hundred and eleven students from four different classes were selected as research subjects from certain elementary school, and divided into two groups as the experimental group and the control group. Under quasi-experimental design, the teacher took inquiry teaching method to design the instructions for the experimental group, while following the traditional teaching method for the control group. The experiment lasted ten classes, and compared the learning effects from both the experimental group and the control group by quantitative research method. Moreover, the teacher collected the experimental group students’ feedback lists for “Sound” unit, and analyzed their feedbacks. The research tool included a test designed by the teacher for evaluating the students’ learning effects, and a feedback list for the experimental group students. Pre-test and Post-test were implemented to analyze the differences in learning effects from both of the groups, by using descriptive, ANCOVA, Johnson-Neyman Method to analyze the data collected from the students. And the feedback list was for researcher to analyze the students’ feedbacks and opinions about this improved inquiry teaching method. The results of the research show that with the two different teaching methods adopted in the teacher’s instruction, the experimental group students’ learning effects are obviously superior to the control group students’, who used textbooks. Also, considering the difference in learning effects caused by gender, male students’ grades in two groups indicate greater differences. Even within the experimental group, male students show better performance than female students. The experiment proves that in “Sound” unit, the improved inquiry teaching method turns out to be more effective on male students than female students. Furthermore, after analyzing the students’ feedback on inquiry teaching method adopted, the result shows that the improved inquiry teaching method can help the students clarify the concepts about “Sounds”, also induce great motivation. In this experiment, the improved inquiry teaching method was proved effective, and is worth of adopting in future instructions.

This paper describes and assesses a research curriculum for management students that uses a learning-centered course design. The curriculum was developed for a two-year master’s program in Business Administration at a mid-size university of applied sciences in Switzerland. A considerable portion of the curriculum (42 out of 90 credits) is devoted to the development of students’ research methods competencies and skills. We argue that the complexities of management practice require managerial practitioners to make wise context-driven decisions by utilizing relevant management research to inform their practice and by managing the responsible production of new knowledge in their organizations. In this paper, we briefly discuss pedagogical challenges in teaching research methods to management students. We then lay out three constructively aligned design elements of our research curriculum that address these challenges. Based on results of evaluation surveys administered to faculty and students and on our own nearly decade-long experiences as instructors in this program, we discuss students’ and instructors’ perceptions of the research curriculum design and course outcomes. Finally, we provide recommendations for educators in graduate management education based on our findings and experiences.

Research methods education in LIS master’s degree programs is facing several difficult questions: should a methods course be required, what content should be taught in that course, and what is the most effective mechanism for teaching that content. There is little consensus about what should be taught or how, but the American Library Association, LIS educators, and many practitioners seem to agree that research methods are vital skills for 21st century LIS practitioners. This paper reports on an experiential learning opportunity called the “unClassroom,” which afforded LIS master’s students the chance to complete a research project in one semester for an outside client (a statewide library consortium). The effectiveness of the unClassroom to teach research methods surpassed expectations and provides a model that may be of interest to other research methods educators in LIS master’s programs.
