Rethinking the SDN Abstraction

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is a networking approach that separates the network's control plane and data plane to provide better network control. The nature of SDN requires an essential focus on its reliability and availability, which includes failure detection aspects. Several techniques have been proposed to enhance SDN failure detection, including passive and active approaches. However, the Route Inspection (RI) algorithm, an example of the active probing method in active detection, has scalability issues when deployed in large-scale networks as it generates inefficient and lengthy probe paths. To address this, we propose using community detection (CD) algorithms to improve the probe path generation of the RI algorithm, resulting in the 'Failure Detection using Community Detection and probing (FDCD)' framework. With the aim to reduce travel paths, the proposed framework minimizes the network topology using CD algorithms to reduce the topology size into smaller communities. Then, the RI algorithm calculates the probe path in the communities instead of the single large topology, thus improving the efficiency of the failure detection mechanism. This paper adopts three community detection algorithms: Louvain, Label Propagation, and Girvan-Newman. We evaluate the framework using three well-known network topologies, COST266, PIORO40, and GERMANY50, in Mininet to observe the framework's performance. The results indicate that the proposed approach improves the algorithm's scalability against its baseline approach, improving the average probe round trip time by 66.87% and the average path installation time by 2.67%.

Software-defined network (SDN) radically changes the network architecture by decoupling the network logic from the underlying forwarding devices. This architectural change rejuvenates the network-layer granting centralized management and reprogrammability of the networks. From a security perspective, SDN separates security concerns into control and data plane, and this architectural recomposition brings up exciting opportunities and challenges. The overall perception is that SDN capabilities will ultimately result in improved security. However, in its raw form, SDN could potentially make networks more vulnerable to attacks and harder to protect. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of SDN security domain while focusing on its data plane, which is one of the least explored but most critical aspects in securing this technology. We review the most recent enhancements in SDNs, identify the main vulnerabilities of SDNs, and provide a novel attack taxonomy for SDNs. Thereafter, we provide a comprehensive analysis of challenges involved in protecting SDN data plane and control plane and provide an in-depth look into available solutions with respect to the identified threats and identify their limitations. To highlight the importance of securing the SDN platform, we also review the numerous security services built on top of this technology. We conclude the paper by offering future research directions.

Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a new networking paradigm, with a great potential to increase network efficiency, ease the complexity of network control and management, and accelerate the rate of technology innovation. One of the core concepts of SDN is the separation of the network's control and data plane. The intelligence and the control of the network operation and management, such as routing, is removed from the forwarding elements (switches) and is concentrated in a logically centralised component, i.e. the SDN controller. In order for the controller to configure and manage the network, it needs to have up-to-date information about the state of the network, in particular its topology. Consequently, topology discovery is a critical component of any Software Defined Network architecture. In this paper, we evaluate the cost and overhead of the de facto standard approach to topology discovery currently implemented by the major SDN controller frameworks, and propose simple and practical modifications which achieve a significantly improved efficiency and reduced control overhead. We have implemented our new topology discovery approach on the widely used POX controller platform, and have evaluated it for a range of network topologies via experiments using the Mininet network emulator. Our results show that our proposed modifications achieve an up to 45% reduction in controller load compared to the current state-of-the-art approach, while delivering identical discovery functionality.

The exponential growth in the number of devices connected via the internet has led to the need to achieve granular programmability for increased performance, resilience, reduced latency, and jitter. Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Programming Protocol independent Packet Processing (P4) are designed to introduce programmability into the control and data plane of networks, respectively. Despite their individual potential and capabilities, the performance of combining SDN and P4 remains underexplored. This study presents a comprehensive evaluation of SDN with data plane programmability using P4 (SDN+P4) against traditional SDN with Open vSwitch (SDN+OvS), aimed at answering the hypothesis that combining SDN and P4 strengthens the control and data plane programmability and offers improved management and adaptability, which would provide a platform with faster packet processing with reduced jitter, loss, and processing overhead. Mininet was employed to emulate three distinct topologies: multi-path, grid, and transit-stub. Various traffic types were transmitted to assess performance metrics across the three topologies. Our results demonstrate that SDN+P4 outperform SDN+OvS significantly due to parallel processing, flexible parsing, and reduced overhead. The evaluation demonstrates the potential of SDN+P4 to provide a more resilient and stringent service with improved network performance for the future internet and its heterogeneity of applications.

Software-defined networking (SDN) scheme decouples network control plane and data plane, which can improve the flexibility of traffic management in networks. OpenFlow is a promising implementation instance of SDN scheme and has been applied to enterprise networks and data center networks in practice. However, it has less effort to spread SDN control scheme over the Internet to conquer the ossification of inter-domain routing. In this paper, we further innovate to the SDN inter-domain routing inspired by the OpenFlow protocol. We apply SDN flow-based routing control to inter-domain routing and propose a fine-granularity inter-domain routing mechanism, named SDI (Software Defined Inter-domain routing). It enables inter-domain routing to support the flexible routing policy by matching multiple fields of IP packet header. We also propose a method to reduce redundant flow entries for inter-domain settings. And, we implement a prototype and deploy it on a multi-domain testbed.

Software defined network (SDN) decouples the network control and data planes. Despite various advantages of SDNs, they are vulnerable to various security attacks such anomalies, intrusions, and Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks and so on. On the other hand, any anomaly and intrusion in SDNs can affect many important domains such as banking system and national security. Therefore, the anomaly detection topic is a broad research domain, and to mitigate these security problems, a great deal of research has been conducted in the literature. In this paper, the state-of-the-art schemes applied in detecting and mitigating anomalies in SDNs are explained, categorized, and compared. This paper categorizes the SDN anomaly detection mechanisms into five categories: (1) flow counting scheme, (2) information-based scheme, (3) entropy-based scheme, (4) deep learning, and (5) hybrid scheme. The research gaps and major existing research issues regarding SDN anomaly detection are highlighted. We hope that the analyses, comparisons, and classifications might provide directions for further research.

Software‐defined networking (SDN) is a relatively new approach in network management that proposes to separate the network control (Control plane) and the forwarding process (Data plane) to optimize the network infrastructure and improve network performance, controllability, manageability and flexibility. However, like every technology, SDN has brought its own new challenges in terms of security and scalability which are very important aspects that should be considered to design and build a resilient architecture in order to meet carrier grade network requirements. In this paper, we propose a secure SDN architecture with IEEE 802.1X port‐based authentication where we also consider the controller's scalability issue by devolving the access control capability to the data plane. In this way, we reduce the high demand and the workload on the SDN controller. Our proposed model presents a novel SDN network architecture and logical network segmentation which provides an optimal and secure network access with low latency. The evolution and advancements in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have enabled large scale distributed computing with a huge chunk of applications for massive number of users. This has obviously generated large volumes of data, thus severely burdening the processing capacity of computers as well as the inflexible traditional networks. State-of-the-art methods for addressing datacenter level performance fixes are yet found wanting for sufficiently addressing this huge processing, storage, and network movement with proprietary protocols for this voluminous data. In this chapter the works have focused on addressing the backend server performance through effective reducer placement, intelligent compression policy, handling slower tasks and in-network performance boosting techniques through effective traffic engineering, traffic classification, topology discovery, energy minimization and load balancing in datacenter-oriented applications. Hadoop, the defacto standard in distributed big data storage and processing, has been designed to store data with its Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) and processing engine MapReduce large datasets reliably. However, the processing performance of Hadoop is critically dependent on the time taken to transfer data during the shuffle generated during MapReduce. Also, during concurrent execution of tasks, slower tasks need to be properly identified and efficiently handled to improve the completion time of jobs. To overcome these limitations, three contributions have been made; (i) Compression of generated map outputs at a suitable time when all the map tasks are yet to be completed to shift the load of network onto the CPU; (ii) Placing the reducer onto the nodes where the computation done is highest based on a couple of counters, one maintained at the rack level and another at node level, to minimize the run-time data copying; and (iii) Placing the slower map tasks onto the nodes where the computation done is highest and network is handled by prioritizing. Software defined networking (SDN) has been a boon for next generation networking owing to the separation of control plane from the data plane. It has the capability to address the network requirements in a timely manner by setting flows for every to and fro data movement and gathering large network statistics at the controller to make informed decisions about the network. A core issue in the network for the controller is traffic classification, which can substantially assist SDN controllers towards efficient routing and traffic engineering decisions. This chapter presents a traffic classification scheme utilizing three classifiers namely Feed-forward Neural Network (FFNN), Logistic Regression (LR), Naïve Bayes and employing Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) for improved traffic classification with less overhead and without overlooking the key Quality of Service (QoS) criterion. Also lowering energy minimization and link utilization has been an important criterion for lowering the operating cost of the network and effectively utilizing the network. This issue has been addressed in the chapter by formulating a multi-objective problem while simultaneously addressing the QoS constraints by proposing a metaheuristic, since no polynomial solution exists and hence an evolutionary based metaheuristic (Clonal Selection) based energy optimization scheme, namely, Clonal Selection Based Energy Minimization (CSEM) has been devised. The obtained results show the efficacy of the proposed traffic classification scheme and CSEM based solution as compared with the state-of-the-art techniques. SDN has been a promising newer network paradigm but security issues and expensive capital procurement of SDN limit its full deployment hence moving to a hybrid SDN (h-SDN) deployment is only logical moving forward. The usage of both centralized and decentralized paradigms in h-SDN with intrinsic issues of interoperability poses challenges to key issues of topology gathering by the controller for proper allocation of network resources and traffic engineering for optimum network performance. State-of-the-art protocols for topology gathering, such as Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) and Broadcast Domain Discovery Protocol (BDDP) require a huge number of messages and such schemes only gather link information of SDN devices leaving out legacy switches’ (LS) links which results in sub-optimal performance. This chapter provides novel schemes which unearth topology discovery by requiring fewer messages and gathering link information of all the devices in both single and multi-controller environments (might be used when scalability issue is prevalent in h-SDN). Traffic engineering problems in h-SDN are addressed by proper placement of SDN nodes in h-SDN by utilizing the analyzing key criterion of traffic details and the degree of a node while lowering the link utilization in real-time topologies. The results of the proposed schemes for topology discovery and SDN node placement demonstrate the merits as compared with the state-of-the-art protocols.

In recent years, SDN has evolved as a promising alternative to the traditional networking paradigm. This is because the traditional network is decentralized, making it difficult to manage and provide trouble-shooting. SDN is an approach to network management whereby the forwarding process of the data plane (DP) is disassociated from the control plane (CP). The CP is responsible for decision-making. SDN centrally control the network infrastructure and make it programmable. Communication between the two planes (data and control) is carried out by the OpenFlow (OF) protocol. The deployment of SDN was initiated by Mr. Matrin Casado and his research team in 2008. The original projects developed at Stanford University were SANE and ETHANE. Security reports and web articles suggest that SDN (Software Defined Network) has the caliber to defend DDoS attacks. The year 2017 has been declared as the year of SDN adaption and DDoS mitigation. The initial effort in the direction of compiling the detection and mitigation approaches has been done in (Dayal et al., 2016). Recently a similar effort has been done in (Rochak et al., 2019). The CP of SDN has a complete visibility of the network which makes traffic monitoring feasible. Moreover, SDN open flow switches contain forwarding logic only; decision-making capability is softwarized at 58controller. This helps the controller to instruct and configure the switches with new flow rules which the switches follow. This facilitates the network admins to detect and mitigate these attacks easily. SDN have gained momentum among the possible solutions of DDoS attacks due to its decentralized nature of network management, but solutions come with its repercussions. The centralization and open architecture framework makes SDN difficult for widespread adaptation. The chapter begins with an introduction to DDoS attacks and its classification such as volumetric attack, protocol exploitation attack and application attack. In the next section, we discuss the possible DDoS attacks over SDN framework. We have categorized the vulnerability into three classes: DDoS attack on data, control, and application planes (APs). The DDoS attack on DP can further be classified into TCAM exhaustion, switch DDoS, ICMP flood, TCP flood, TCP_SYN flood, etc. We would discuss Resource depletion, OF bandwidth exhaustion, amplification attacks in DDoS attack over CP. HTTP flooding and Slowloris attack has been discussed in DDoS attack over AP. The next section highlights the working of attack tools used in performing DDoS attacks. Various DDoS tools have been widely exploited to render DDoS attacks and facilitate attackers to carry out dangerous attack on target; here target may be network resources, server resources, or applications. The fourth section focuses on the state-of-the-art for detection and mitigation approaches of DDoS attacks. Detection approaches are classified into statistical, policy, and machine learning-based approaches. DDoS mitigation OF switches, including Alcatel Lucent’s OmniSwitch, Brocade’s MLXe series routers, and applications such as DefensePro by Radware that are available in market; also depend on the statistical threshold to detect the DDoS attack. In addition, this section also incorporates a brief analysis of the previous defense mechanism of the last 10 years and analyzes and compares the products of different security vendors like Cloudflare, Radware, Akamai, Arbor, Nexusguard, etc.

Intrusion detection system (IDS) and deep packet inspection (DPI) are widely used to detect network attacks and anomalies, thereby enhancing cyber-security. Conventional traffic analyzers such as IDS have fixed locations and a limited capacity to perform DPI on large volumes of network traffic. Nowadays, software-defined networking (SDN) technology, which provides flexibility, elasticity, and programmability by decoupling the network control and data planes, makes it possible to capture entire or a certain portion of data traffic flows on SDN-capable switches and steer the captured network traffic to one of the traffic analyzers on the network. Therefore, how to sample network traffic and where to steer the sampled traffic among multiple traffic analyzers are critical problems facing cyber-security. Since there is a possibility that potentially useful information will be lost in not-captured traffic, deciding the sampling points and sampling rates of network traffic remains important. Additionally, after determining the sampling points and rates, sampled traffic must be sent to one of the multiple traffic analyzers for traffic inspection, which may incur additional network delivery overheads. We propose a less-intrusive traffic sampling mechanism for multiple traffic analyzers on an SDN-capable network using a deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG), which is a representative deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm for continuous action control. The proposed system learns sampling resource allocation policy under the uncertainty of flow distribution according to sampled traffic inspection results obtained from multiple traffic analyzers. Through extensive simulations and the SDN-based testbed experiments, we demonstrate that the proposed approach has a high probability of capturing malicious flows while maintaining a balanced load of multiple traffic analyzers and reducing flow monitoring overheads.

Software defined networks (SDN) has gained a lot of attention from both academia and industry recently. SDN is a new networking paradigm that decouples the control plane from the data plane. In this paradigm, control functions are centralized in an SDN controller. The migration from traditional networks to SDN is highly challenging for network operators. Sudden migration may not be possible due to the cost and operational issues. Therefore, incremental deployment of SDN is considered as a viable solution, resulting in the formation of hybrid SDN networks. An important task in hybrid SDN networks is bandwidth allocation and routing considering the coexistence of both conventional and SDN-enabled routers. In this paper, we first formulate this problem as a multi-objective integer program with delay and capacity constraints. Then, a heuristic approach is proposed to combat the computational complexity of the model. Our proposed method is extensively analyzed through simulations, and the evaluation results confirm the effectiveness of our approach.

Through network programmability, we may simplify network management and bring innovation, cloud computing introduced some of its network concepts. One of the most prominent cloud models for minimizing maintenance obligations and simplifying network infrastructure administration is the SDN (Software Defined Network) architecture. SDN stands out because it provides separation of the control plane and programmability for developing network applications. As a result, SDN is expected to enable more efficient configuration, higher performance, and increased flexibility to support new network architectures. This article is aimed to demonstrates the importance of the SDN and the major role it plays in the organization and how SDNs can be profitable to many organizations that remain in the archaic or a traditional cloud environment and how SDN can restructure the cloud architecture with more security enhancement and also to investigate SDN related issues and challenges to provide insight into the obstacles that this revolutionary network paradigm will face in the future, from both a protocol and architecture standpoint. In this study, systematic literature was conducted and descriptive was used to analyze data. When it comes to SDN, the following challenges and issues stand out: All of these phrases are used to characterize the properties of a system: scalability, high availability, reliability, elasticity, security, performance, resilience, and dependability.

An Approach for Supervising the Security Threats using Software Defined Networks

In this era wireless technology gaining more popularity, people prefer wireless communication over wired communication due to mobility, scalability and ease of access. However, the traditional wireless network is complex, vendor dependent and inadequate feasibility to incorporate new services, protocols, and APIs. The rapid growth in wireless network raises many thoughtful challenges for network and telecom operators. On such grounds, Innovation of Software Defined Network (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) for mobile network opens a new arena of research. This research article presents future mobile Internet architecture (FMIA) with the integration of twin technologies, SDN and NFV that enable rapid access to Internet services. Moreover, the network manager can control services provided by ISPs through proposed architecture.
