Efficient densely connected convolutional neural networks
Character recognition and classification is considered one of the most important parts of current LPR systems. Because of low recognition quality and poor robustness of traditional character recognition techniques, those techniques were gradually replaced by powerful deep learning modules such as convolutional neural networks. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) show satisfying ability in character recognition and outperform most of other available models. Since Chinese license plates contain Chinese characters in addition to ordinary alphanumeric characters, a robust, powerful, and efficient CNN is needed to accomplish character recognition task efficiently. In this paper, we have proposed an efficient CNN model based on Darknet architecture to perform character recognition. Through convolutional and max pooling layers, features of input character images will be extracted and then sent to softmax layer for classification. To avoid overfitting problem in the training process, the dropout regularization technique is adopted. We have used a dataset of 84,000 character images for training and testing our model. The experimental result shows satisfactory outputs and eventually achieves test accuracy of 99.69%.

Cursive Text Recognition in Natural Scene Images Using Deep Convolutional Recurrent Neural Network
Text recognition in natural scene images is a challenging problem in computer vision. Different than the optical character recognition (OCR), text recognition in natural scene images is more complex due to variations in text size, colors, fonts, orientations, complex backgrounds, occlusion, illuminations and uneven lighting conditions. In this paper, we propose a segmentation-free method based on a deep convolutional recurrent neural network to solve the problem of cursive text recognition, particularly focusing on Urdu text in natural scenes. Compared to the non-cursive scripts, Urdu text recognition is more complex due to variations in the writing styles, several shapes of the same character, connected text, ligature overlapping, stretched, diagonal and condensed text. The proposed model gets a whole word image as an input without pre-segmenting into individual characters, and then transforms into the sequence of the relevant features. Our model is based on three components: a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) with shortcut connections to extract and encode the features, a recurrent neural network (RNN) to decode the convolutional features, and a connectionist temporal classification (CTC) to map the predicted sequences into the target labels. To increase the text recognition accuracy further, we explore deeper CNN architectures like VGG-16, VGG-19, ResNet-18 and ResNet-34 to extract more appropriate Urdu text features, and compare the recognition results. To conduct the experiments, a new large-scale benchmark dataset of cropped Urdu word images in natural scenes is developed. The experimental results show that the proposed deep CRNN network with shortcut connections outperform than other network architectures. In order to overcome the effects of posture, illumination, expression and other factors on face recognition, this paper proposes an algorithm which is based on local binary pattern (LBP) and convolutional neural network (CNN). LBP is a texture description method which describes the local texture features of an image. It has good robustness of illumination and posture. CNN can effectively extract the spatial features of images and reduce the dimensions of features. This paper combines the advantages of LBP and CNN to improve the accuracy of face recognition. The CNN in this algorithm has four convolution layers, two max-pooling layers, one activation layer, one fully connected layer, and one output layer. In order to optimize the network structure, batch normalization layer is added after the convolution layer. We get the local binary pattern coded images and put the images as the input of the CNN and train the network. Hence, we can use the well-trained CNN for classification and identification. The Experiments on the CMU-PIE face database show that our algorithm can effectively improve the rate of face recognition.

Most Latin word and character recognition systems have numerous classification algorithms to automate the identification of handwritten characters. However, despite extensive research on various Latin-based languages, relatively limited attention has been given to the recognition of handwritten text in Nigerian indigenous languages. Handwritten character recognition is challenging due to the variations in shape and style. In addition to that, these characters naturally vary among individuals. This work presents an offline character recognition system for Igbo handwritten alphabets using convolutional neural networks. In this study, a dataset comprising 9,000 character images was created, with 250 distinct samples for each of the 36 letters in the Igbo alphabet. Of these, 200 samples per character (a total of 7,200 images) were pre-processed, binarized, and normalized for training two Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models. The remaining 50 samples per character (1,800 images) were reserved for testing. Model 1 and Model 2 achieved recognition accuracies of 83.5% and 85.0%, respectively. The proposed approach demonstrates potential for enhancing the automation and digitization of handwritten Igbo texts into machine-readable formats. This study designed a finger-worn device-named the Chinese FingerReader-that can be practically applied by visually impaired users for recognizing traditional Chinese characters on the micro internet of things (IoT) processor. The device is portable, easy to operate, and designed to be worn on the index finger. The Chinese FingerReader on the index finger contains a small camera and buttons. The small camera captures images by identifying the relative position of the index finger to the printed text, and the buttons are applied to capture an image by visually impaired users and provide the audio output of the corresponding Chinese character by a voice prompt. To recognize Chinese characters, English letters, and numbers, a robust Chinese optical character recognition (OCR) system was developed according to the training strategy of an augmented convolution neural network algorithm. The proposed Chinese OCR system can segment a single character from the captured image, and the system can accurately recognize rotated Chinese characters. The experimental results revealed that compared with the OCR application programming interfaces of Google and Microsoft, the proposed OCR system obtains 95% accuracy rate in dealing with rotated character images where the Google and Microsoft OCR APIs only obtain 65% and 34% accuracy rates. These results illustrate that the proposed OCR system was more suitable for the needs of visually impaired people in actual use. Finally, three usage scenarios were simulated, and the accuracy and operational performance of the system were tested. Field tests of this system were conducted for visually impaired users to verify its feasibility.

Scene text detection and recognition are vital challenging tasks in computer vision, which are to detect and recognize sequences of texts in natural scenes. Recently, researchers have investigated a lot of state-of-the-art methods to improve the accuracy and efficiency of text detection and recognition. However, there has been little research on text detection and recognition in natural scenes in Vietnam. In this paper, a deep learning-based empirical investigation of Vietnamese scene text detection and recognition is presented. Firstly, four detection models including differentiable binarization network (DBN), pyramid mask text detector (PMTD), pixel aggregation network (PAN), and Fourier contour embedding network (FCEN), are employed to detect text regions from the images. Then, four text recognition models including convolutional recurrent neural network (CRNN), self-attention text recognition network (SATRN), no-recurrence sequence-to-sequence text recognizer (NRTR), and RobustScanner (RS) are also investigated to recognize the texts. Moreover, data augmentation methods are also applied to enrich data for improving the accuracy and enhancing the performance of scene text detection and recognition. To validate the effectiveness of scene text detection and recognition models, the VinText dataset is employed for evaluation. Empirical results show that PMTD and SATRN achieve the highest scores among the others for text detection and recognition, respectively. For knowledge-sharing, our implementation is publicly available at https://github.com/ThorPham/VN_scene_text_detection_recognition.

<p>Text recognition task involves recognizing the text from the natural image; it possesses various application, which aids information extraction through data mining from street view like images. Scene text recognition involves two stages i.e., text detection and text recognition, in the past several mechanisms has been proposed for accurate identification, these mechanisms are either traditional approach or deep learning-based. All the existing deep-learning methodology fails as this comprises character data and image data, further this research develops an optimal architecture fusion neural network (FNN) for text identification and recognition. FNN comprises several layers of convolutional neural network as well as recurrent neural network. Within FNN architecture convolutional layer is utilized for the feature extraction and recurrent layer is utilized for attaining the feature classification prediction. Further, an optimal training architecture is established for the enhancement of classification accuracy. Here Devanagari MLT-19 dataset is utilized for the evaluation of FNN. Three different parameters are considered during evaluation i.e., script word identification, character recognition rate (CRR) and word recognition rate (WRR). Further comparison with existing models is performed to establish the proposed model efficiency and it shows FNN methodology observes 98.67% of script identification accuracy, 84.65% of WRR and 92.93% of CRR.</p>

Chinese Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology is essential for digital transformation in Chinese regions, enabling automated document processing across various applications. However, Chinese OCR systems struggle with visually similar characters, where subtle stroke differences lead to systematic recognition errors that limit practical deployment accuracy. This study develops FLIP (Feedback Learning-based Intelligent Plugin), a lightweight post-processing plugin designed to improve Chinese OCR accuracy across different systems without external dependencies. The plugin operates through three core components as follows: UTF-8 encoding-based output parsing that converts OCR results into mathematical representations, error correction using information entropy and weighted similarity measures to identify and fix character-level errors, and adaptive feedback learning that optimizes parameters through user interactions. The approach functions entirely through mathematical calculations at the character encoding level, ensuring universal compatibility with existing OCR systems while effectively handling complex Chinese character similarities. The plugin’s modular design enables seamless integration without requiring modifications to existing OCR algorithms, while its feedback mechanism adapts to domain-specific terminology and user preferences. Experimental evaluation on 10,000 Chinese document images using four state-of-the-art OCR models demonstrates consistent improvements across all tested systems, with precision gains ranging from 1.17% to 10.37% and overall Chinese character recognition accuracy exceeding 98%. The best performing model achieved 99.42% precision, with ablation studies confirming that feedback learning contributes additional improvements from 0.45% to 4.66% across different OCR architectures.

Text recognition in the wild is a challenging task in the field of computer vision and machine learning. Existing optical character recognition engines cannot perform well in the natural scene. In this context, deep learning models have emerged as a powerful state-of-the-art technique in the classification and recognition process. This study proposes a new Convolutional Neural Network based system for scene text reading. We investigate how to combine the character recognition module followed by the word recognition module to achieve the overall system goal. The first module analyzes characters within multi-scale images by relaying on the power of the convolutional network and the fully connected network for character recognition. The second module relies on the Viterbi search to find the closest word to a given characters sequence. For the sake of more precision, a bigram based linguistic module is applied. The proposed system achieves the state-of-the-art performance on three standard scene text recognition benchmarks: chars74k, ICDAR 2003 and ICDAR 2013. In particular, this performance is proven on both of character and word recognition accuracy as well as speed aspects via a comparative study between different deep learning architectures.

Font recognition is one of the essential issues in document recognition and analysis, and is frequently a complex and time-consuming process. Many techniques of optical character recognition (OCR) have been suggested and some of them have been marketed, however, a few of these techniques considered font recognition. The issue of OCR is that it saves copies of documents to make them searchable, but the documents stop having the original appearance. To solve this problem, this paper presents a system for recognizing three and six English fonts from character images using Convolution Neural Network (CNN), and then compare the results of proposed system with the two studies. The first study used NCM features and SVM as a classification method, and the second study used DP features and SVM as classification method. The data of this study were taken from Al-Khaffaf dataset [21]. The two types of datasets have been used: the first type is about 27,620 sample for the three fonts classification and the second type is about 72,983 sample for the six fonts classification and both datasets are English character images in gray scale format with 8 bits. The results showed that CNN achieved the highest recognition rate in the proposed system compared with the two studies reached 99.75% and 98.329 % for the three and six fonts recognition, respectively. In addition, CNN got the least time required for creating model about 6 minutes and 23- 24 minutes for three and six fonts recognition, respectively. Based on the results, we can conclude that CNN technique is the best and most accurate model for recognizing fonts.
Read moreRare Chinese character recognition by Radical Extraction Network
Building a modern Optical Character Recognition (OCR) system for Chinese is hard due to the large Chinese vocabulary list. Training images for rare Chinese characters are extremely expensive to obtain. Radical-based OCR systems tackle this problem by first extracting and recognizing basic graphical components (i.e., radicals) of a Chinese character. However, how to reliably recognize radicals still remains an open challenge. In this paper, we propose a novel Radical Extraction Network (REN) to extract and recognize radicals using deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). REN is end-to-end trainable, and it needs less hand-tunning compared with previous segmentation-based approaches. Deep appearance models for radicals are learned from data in a weakly supervised fashion, and no radical-level annotations are required. We learn to recognize different radicals on commonly used Chinese characters, and transfer the learned deep appearance models to rarely used Chinese characters. Experimental results show that the proposed method helps the classifier to recognize rare Chinese characters.

Self-attention based models such as vision transformers (ViTs) have emerged as a very competitive architecture alternative to convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in computer vision. Despite increasingly stronger variants with ever higher recognition accuracies, due to the quadratic complexity of self-attention, existing ViTs are typically demanding in computation and model size. Although several successful design choices (e.g., the convolutions and hierarchical multi-stage structure) of prior CNNs have been reintroduced into recent ViTs, they are still not sufficient to meet the limited resource requirements of mobile devices. This motivates a very recent attempt to develop light ViTs based on the state-of-the-art MobileNet-v2, but still leaves a performance gap behind. In this work, pushing further along this under-studied direction we introduce EdgeViTs, a new family of light-weight ViTs that, for the first time, enable attention based vision models to compete with the best light-weight CNNs in the tradeoff between accuracy and on-device efficiency. This is realized by introducing a highly cost-effective local-global-local (LGL) information exchange bottleneck based on optimal integration of self-attention and convolutions. For device-dedicated evaluation, rather than relying on inaccurate proxies like the number of FLOPs or parameters, we adopt a practical approach of focusing directly on on-device latency and, for the first time, energy efficiency. Extensive experiments on image classification, object detection and semantic segmentation validate high efficiency of our EdgeViTs when compared to the state-of-the-art efficient CNNs and ViTs in terms of accuracy-efficiency tradeoff on mobile hardware. Specifically, we show that our models are Pareto-optimal when both accuracy-latency and accuracy-energy tradeoffs are considered, achieving strict dominance over other ViTs in almost all cases and competing with the most efficient CNNs. For the past several decades, offline handwritten character recognition is widely and deeply studied. The requirements of the identification results are constantly improving in practical applications. However, the recognition rates of the similar handwritten Chinese characters are not very high in different writing style, writing environment and writing mode. We propose a method of combining deep convolution neural network and support vector machine together. Using the deep convolution neural network to learn and extract Chinese characters features automatically, and then the extracted features are classified and identified by the support vector machine. Experiments show that the deep convolution neural network can extract the features effectively, which avoided the shortage of artificial feature extraction, then using the support vector machine to classify and identify that, the accuracy rate is further improved.

With the wide application of artificial intelligence technology in intelligent education, intelligent office and other fields, handwritten optical character recognition (OCR) as an important content of intelligent education research has been widely concerned. Traditional character recognition technology is mainly for high-quality printed images, but there are some problems in English handwriting, such as irregular handwriting, overlapping letters, word smearing, etc., which can not achieve the recognition accuracy of printed images. In particular, the lack of database construction for handwriting images with scrawl and daub increases the difficulty of model training, so handwriting recognition is a very challenging task. In view of the existing problems mentioned above and the limitations of traditional handwriting recognition methods, this paper studies the English handwriting recognition method based on deep learning technology, and realizes the English handwriting image detection and recognition system on this basis. The main tasks of this paper are as follows: 1. The database of English handwriting image is established, including neat, scrawl, neat and smeared and scrawl and smeared. Label information is assigned to each type of data, and SVM classifier is trained to classify new samples using this database. In order to reduce the interference of smear area and background information on the character recognition model, the image is preprocessed with smear block removal, gray scale and tilt correction, and the processing results are used as the input of the subsequent detection and recognition model. 2. A convolutional cyclic neural network based on cross-channel and cross-space attention mechanism is proposed. The convolutional neural network is used to extract local feature information and cross-channel and cross-space attention mechanisms are introduced to reduce the loss of key features. At the same time, bidirectional recurrent neural network is used to capture the context dependence of characters and obtain the word order information of English script. 3. An English handwritten recognition method based on Semantic Reasoning Networks (SRN) and CCSACRNN (SNCN) is proposed.
