Abstract

: This paper evaluates the performance of real-time kinematic (RTK) algorithms designed for highway environments. The experiments were performed over a number of years in a variety of environments ranging from a racetrack with a completely clear view of the sky to a busy suburban freeway with overpasses, trucks, and other obscurations. A description of a single-epoch RTK algorithm, which performs well in the freeway environment, is given. A number of the experiments used two antennas and two receivers on the vehicle for error detection. This configuration is capable of providing high confidence in correct RTK solutions. Some of the experiments used map-based altitude aiding to improve RTK performance. Possible racetrack and highway applications are discussed.
