SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production

UNESCO believed that college students play an important role in sustainable development, and service learning in higher education is an important stage in establishing students’ social responsibility, sustainable community development and sustainable awareness. The purpose of this study was to design a performing arts service-learning course so that participants could truly understand the actions of social responsibility, devote themselves to the action of sustainable development in the community, cultivate awareness sustainable in action, and predict the achievement of sustainable development goals. This study implemented a 3-month “Performing Arts Service-Learning Course”. A total of 90 performing arts college students (57 females and 33 males) voluntarily participated in this research. Reflection activities and questionnaire survey will be carried out immediately after the course ends. The results of the study showed that after the course ended, the participants reflected on the activities and believed that service learning can establish a good partnership between the school and the community. Gain first-hand experience from serving others, serve social justice, serve the less privileged, and spread love and joy to more people. Questionnaires: Both males and females were satisfied with the topics of “social responsibility” and “sustainable community development”. All participants agreed with the topics of “sustainability awareness” and “sustainable development goals”. Males and females were highly correlated with social responsibility, sustainable community development, sustainable awareness, and sustainable development goals (4, 5, 11, 16, 17). Finally, the social responsibility, sustainable community development, and sustainable awareness of males and females could effectively predict the sustainable development goals (4, 5, 11, 16, 17). The conclusion of this study showed that service learning can help college students learn to solve problems from practice and understand the value of sustainable development through community service and caring for environmental changes. From now on, the 17 goals of sustainable development goals should be planned into courses in various fields. It is helpful to broaden students’ horizons and move towards the era of global sustainable development goals.

Purpose: Kenya's strategic position on Africa's eastern coast makes its blue economy essential for national development. This study analyzes the relationship between sustainable maritime logistics and the potential of the blue economy to promote social equity, environmental sustainability, and economic growth. Methodology: A systematic literature review was conducted, synthesizing scholarly research, industry reports, and policy documents on maritime logistics and its contribution to Kenya's blue economy. The analysis focuses on key dimensions such as port infrastructure, regulatory frameworks, and technological innovation. Results: The study finds that efficient maritime logistics enhance trade efficiency, reduce transportation costs, and support sustainable practices, thus maximizing the blue economy's potential. However, challenges remain, including limited port capacity, inefficient customs processes, insufficient cold chain infrastructure, and gaps in workforce training. Addressing these issues requires policy reforms and investments in modern infrastructure. Theoretical Contribution: This research contributes to the sustainable development theory by positioning maritime logistics as a central element of blue economic resilience and environmental stewardship. It introduces a conceptual model viewing maritime logistics as an enabler of sustainable blue economy growth in Kenya. Practical Implications: The study recommends targeted investments in green technologies, improved maritime training, and the formation of multi-stakeholder partnerships to foster collaborative and resilient maritime logistics systems. It also highlights the need for more comprehensive data and encourages future research to include primary data for deeper insights. This study offers a comparative analysis of Singapore and Lebanon’s progress towards the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Singapore, a high-income island city-state, has demonstrated significant advancement due to its stable political environment, strong institutions, long-term strategic planning, and sustained economic prosperity. Ranking 65th globally in the 2024 Sustainable Development Report, Singapore has made good or fair progress in over half of the SDG targets, particularly in Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Quality Education (SDG 4), Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7), and Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11). However, it still faces challenges in areas such as Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9), and Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), along with data gaps. In stark contrast, Lebanon, a middle-income nation, faces immense challenges that have significantly hindered its SDG progress. Ranking 110th globally in the 2024 Sustainable Development Report, Lebanon grapples with poverty (SDG 1), hunger (SDG 2), a strained healthcare system (SDG 3), a severe energy crisis (SDG 7), high unemployment (SDG 8), and damaged infrastructure (SDG 9). Persistent political instability, weak governance, recurring economic crises, and the enduring impact of internal and external conflicts, including the Syrian refugee crisis, have severely impeded Lebanon’s ability to achieve the SDGs. To make substantial progress, Lebanon requires fundamental legal and political reforms to address deep-rooted systemic issues hindering its development.

Global decline in capacity of coral reefs to provide ecosystem services

This review examines the potential role of urban agriculture – the practice of farming within and around cities and densely populated areas – in addressing the pressing challenge of sustainable development, correlated to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As a set of 17 interconnected goals designed to guide action towards a sustainable and equitable future, the SDGs represent a call to action for all countries and highlight the most pressing challenges and opportunities of today. In recognising that the function and impacts of sustainably and equitably feeding the world’s population are inherent to many of the goals, an interrogation of literature about food supply from within the urban environment (where most people live) has been conducted to support the research aim of considering urban agriculture as a strategy to help achieve urban sustainability and resilience goals. Through a narrative review approach this novel investigation extends beyond the constraints of narrow SDG-centric literature to sustainable development more broadly, finding that urban agriculture is highly valued for its ability to strengthen local food systems and its ecosystem service contributions to urban sustainability, along with socio-cultural attributes. This review depicts practices, highlights multifarious benefits, and features potential perverse outcomes and considerations; in the process identifying that the strongest and deepest connections between urban agriculture and sustainable development are with three specific goals: SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). Accordingly, the insights gleaned from this narrative review have been structured to reflect the connections with these three SDGs and related to the human- and systems-centric themes of People and Planet . Introduction. The subject of sustainable development of the territory is the territorial community. It is at the level of territorial communities that sustainable development should be ensured through management and regulatory influences. Therefore, the regulation of sustainable development of territorial communities should be carried out on the basis of strategic and project approaches in the context of the requirements of the European Union. Methods. The theoretical and methodological basis of the article was formed by the fundamental provisions of modern economic science, scientific works of domestic and foreign theorists and practitioners. The following methods were used in the research: system, structural and functional analysis; statistical method. Results. From the standpoint of the targeted approach, the theoretical provisions on the use of strategic and project approaches to regulate the sustainable development of territorial communities in the context of the European Green Deal and the requirements of the European Union were substantiated. The importance of the state regulation of sustainable development of territorial communities (TCs) on the basis of strategic and project approaches was substantiated. The fundamental definitions of scientific research were presented: state regulation of sustainable development of territorial communities, state regional policy, strategic approach to managing the sustainable development of TCs, project approach to the strategic development of TCs. It was installed that the management entities of the Polianska TCs and the functions they perform form the organizational and functional support for the management and regulation of the TCs sustainable development and the application of strategic and project approaches for this purpose. It was stated that the state regulation of sustainable development of TCs should be combined and strengthened by public regulation. It was emphasized that in order to improve the system of regulation of sustainable development of the community, it was necessary to: improve the professional level of local government officials as subjects of management and regulation of the community development; strengthen the subsystem of public regulation of sustainable development of the community; scientific and methodological substantiation of improvement of information and communication aspects of the activities of all participants of regulatory influence on sustainable development of the community (the State, the public, business entities, market infrastructure institutions). Discussion. The article identifies relevant promising areas for further theoretical and practical research that will contribute to improving the system of regulation of sustainable development of territorial communities on the basis of strategic and project approaches. As urbanization has increased rapidly, the issue of sustainability has become more prominent, and urban sustainability should be the key to achieving the sustainable agenda raised by the UN. This study combines bibliometrics and text mining to analyze the research progress of urban sustainability. A total of 1,031 keywords from 240 documents screened by the PRISMA method are coded to draw heat maps in accordance with the sustainable triple bottom line principle and its cross-scope (Environment, Society, Economics, Environment & Society, Environment & Economics, Society & Economics, Environment, and Society & Economics) with its emphasis on 17 SDGs. The innovation of this study is manifested as the use of heat maps. The results indicate that the existing relevant research still focuses on environmental protection. Besides the general “sustainability” topics, “land use,” “decision-making,” “green city,” and “eco-city” have been more discussed than others. For the SDGs, the SDG 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, and 15 represent clean water, affordable and clean energy, industry, innovation and infrastructure, sustainable cities and communities, and responsible consumption and production and life on land, respectively. Only a small part of the research has begun to focus on the sustainable development of the community. More comprehensive and complete insights should be gained into sustainable development. This study suggests that the research on urban sustainability will be further deepened, and it should be significantly integrated with SGDs and place a focus on the coupling of urban sustainability and economic growth.

The article provides a comprehensive study of sustainable finance in the context of urban development projects in Ukraine. Research of this topic is important, because modern cities are rapidly growing, and innovative solutions are needed to manage this expansion while addressing environmental challenges. The authors emphasize the importance of sustainable finance in achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 11 "Sustainable cities and communities". Post-war reconstruction gives Ukraine the opportunity to rebuild its cities based on green principles, in line with the European Green Deal and aiming for climate neutrality by 2050. This transformation requires innovative financial strategies, including sustainable finance, which integrates environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations into investment decisions. The article highlights the key principles of sustainable finance framework and the main categories of financial instruments used in sustainable finance transactions. The authors studied the progress of sustainable finance in Ukraine, namely the formation and development of the legislative framework, strategic planning, financial instruments and the integration of ESG considerations into financial decision-making. Furthermore, the article discusses the funding sources and mechanisms for sustainable development in Ukrainian cities, including public and private financing, international technical assistance projects, and state programs. The authors also emphasize the importance of strategic planning and donor coordination in achieving sustainable urban development goals. Key tasks include improving financial mechanisms, stimulating private capital, and developing realistic post-war urban plans. Overall, the article concludes that while Ukraine has made progress in developing sustainable finance, there is still work to be done to fully integrate sustainable finance principles into the country's financial sector. The authors emphasize for continued efforts to improve the legislative framework, raise awareness, attract of private investors, enhanced risk management, develop digital technologies, and expand concessional funding to support sustainable urban development in Ukraine. Addressing these challenges will be important for achieving sustainable urban development and aligning Ukraine’s financial system with global sustainability trends.

The integration of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into education has become a global priority, yet empirical research on their implementation within arts education remains scarce. While both international and Lithuanian policy documents emphasize the role of culture and the arts in promoting sustainable development, less is known about how arts educators perceive and apply SDG-related themes in their daily practice. This study addresses this gap by examining the attitudes, practices, and perceived competences of arts educators, drawing on a quantitative survey of 164 respondents representing music, visual arts, and other artistic disciplines. The theoretical framework highlights the intersection of sustainable development, cultural policy, and art education. Global strategies such as the European Green Deal and UNESCO’s Framework for Culture and Arts Education underscore the transformative potential of artistic practices for sustainability, while Lithuanian national documents emphasize the integration of sustainability competences across educational sectors. Pedagogical paradigms such as ecopedagogy, art-based environmental education, and the STREAM/STEAM concept provide a rationale for linking creative practices with ecological, social, and ethical dimensions of sustainability. Empirical findings reveal that sustainable development themes are integrated across artistic fields, though with varying emphases. The most frequently cited goals were SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation). Music educators tend to associate their practice with health, well-being, and social engagement, reflecting the affective and community-building nature of music. Visual arts and ceramics educators emphasize ecological awareness, responsible use of materials, and environmental concerns, while educators in other fields such as theatre, dance, and media arts combine both approaches through interdisciplinary projects. When asked about artistic means used to integrate sustainability themes, educators most frequently mentioned movement, dynamics, symbols, metaphors, and rhythm. These artistic tools illustrate the potential of the arts to communicate abstract ideas and evoke emotional engagement. Visual and compositional means such as space, structure, and color were also widely employed, particularly among visual arts educators. These findings underline that the integration of sustainability through the arts is closely linked to the specific expressive logic of each discipline. Educators’ self-assessment of their knowledge related to sustainable development was mostly moderate to high, with the majority rating themselves between three and four on a five-point scale. Only a small group (6.8%) considered themselves experts, while a notable minority felt insufficiently prepared. This indicates a broad base of awareness but also a clear need to strengthen practical competences. The main professional development priorities identified were enhancing media and artistic skills, expanding project-based and interdisciplinary teaching, and improving pedagogical methods for sustainability-related themes. At the same time, educators face significant challenges. The most frequently reported obstacles include a lack of knowledge and practical competences and limited funding for sustainability-oriented projects. These challenges are directly related to educators’ requests for methodological assistance, institutional collaboration, and financial resources, identified as the most urgent needs. Such findings demonstrate that systemic support—methodological, institutional, and financial—is crucial for sustainable integration in arts education. Qualitative responses further emphasize educators’ awareness of their unique role in fostering values, critical thinking, empathy, and social responsibility. Many participants highlighted the capacity of the arts to make sustainability themes accessible, experiential, and personally meaningful through creative exploration. However, they also stressed that without systematic support, such initiatives risk remaining fragmented and short-term. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that arts educators in Lithuania perceive themselves as active agents of sustainability education, already engaging with sustainable development themes through diverse artistic means. Their practices reflect the logic of their disciplines, yet they share common needs for professional development, resources, and institutional support. Bridging the gap between policy aspirations and classroom realities requires targeted training, stable funding mechanisms, and stronger partnerships with cultural and civil society organizations. The findings mark an initial stage of a broader research agenda, providing a foundation for future longitudinal studies on the intersection of arts education and sustainability.

The Community Convergence Framework for Solid Waste Management is a sound management plan to address the solid waste problem for the Tangkas Organic Fertilizer Facility in Bali, Indonesia and for private and government institutions worldwide. The framework’s components are based on the principle that solid waste management should be a collective effort between local governments, communities, and organic waste processing centres. The management plan is structured so that there is a convergence between these three components. In this way, communities can strive to create a cleaner and healthier environment for current and future generations. This research will guide understanding of waste management's importance and community convergence's role in achieving sustainable solutions. Purpose. This paper synthesizes empirical evidence on how to strengthen warehouse-centred supply chains in post-conflict economies facing damaged infrastructure, intermittent access, and volatile demand. Methodology. A systematic review of 15 protocol-verified empirical and simulation studies is conducted, coding contexts, warehouse interventions, and outcomes such as response time, service level/OTIF, inventory stability, delivery days, and unit logistics costs, with limited random-effects aggregation when comparable metrics are available. Results. Robust effects are identified for warehouse prepositioning, temporary or modular depots, lateral transshipment policies, and multi-echelon inventory control, which collectively reduce response times, increase service levels, and stabilise supply with moderate cost impacts. Digital enablers such as offline-capable warehouse management systems and energy‑autonomous facilities further enhance performance under grid and connectivity failures, though quantitative evidence remains sparse. Theoretical contribution. The review integrates the four-R flexibility perspective with the resilience capacities of absorption, adaptation, and recovery, showing how specific warehouse design and control levers operationalise resilience in the recovery phase of humanitarian and essential goods supply chains. Practical implications. The paper proposes a phased implementation roadmap for practitioners in post‑conflict settings, distinguishing quick wins in the first 0–3 months, network reconfiguration over 3–12 months, and longer‑term investments beyond 12 months to embed digital and energy autonomy in warehouse networks. On influencing factors for Sustainable Development goal prioritisation in the automotive industry

In the last 30 years, Self-Help Groups (SHGs) have emerged as a powerful tool in the promotion of the well-being of women and sustainable development. This article conducts a systematic bibliometric review of 387 peer-reviewed articles between 1994 and 2024 to track trends, influential contributions, and thematic evolutions in SHG research. With reference to the Scopus database, utilising Bibliometrics and TCCM (Theory–Context–Characteristics–Methodology) frameworks, the paper presents a map of the intellectual structure and conceptual patterns of the literature. Results reveal SHGs’ influence on various dimensions of well-being such as economic empowerment, social cohesion, access to health services, leadership, and psychosocial resilience. Research on SHG has increasingly been associated with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 1 (No Poverty); SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being); SDG 5 (Gender Equality); SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). Four major themes emerged from this study:’ financial inclusion and empowerment’, ‘maternal and child health’, ‘social support and good health, and gendered leadership and collective agency’. The structured TCCM analysis of 91 high-quality ABDC-listed articles was performed to obtain qualitative insights into the SHG–SDG-development nexus. The results uncover a theoretical fragmentation, geographic concentration of research, insufficient methodological diversity, and under-explored themes such as digital inclusion and multi-dimensional development impacts. This review highlights the potential of SHGs as a bottom-up approach to achieving the SDGs, gender-inclusive development, and the increased agency of women in sustainable and context-specific ways.

Sleep is a topic of scientific and technological relevance, as it is closely related to cognition, emotional well-being, and human health. In addition, health-related geopolitical and social changes have significant implications for sleep research, which in turn is linked to the sustainable development goals (SDGs). An integrative review is conducted to analyze multidisciplinary studies in the field of sleep, considering the socioecological model of sleep health and the SDGs. Sleep was found to play a key role in promoting several SDG: (1) Social and economic inclusion: sleep is linked to poverty eradication, food security, reducing inequalities, and promoting peace and justice; (2) Promoting well-being and quality of life: sleep quality directly affects health, education, gender equality, environmental protection, and combating climate change; (3) Economic and environmental sustainability: Adequate sleep contributes to decent work, innovation, infrastructure, responsible consumption, sustainable communities and collaboration through partnerships. This thematic organization provides an overview of the different aspects of the intersection between sleep health disparities and the SDG.

The article presents a comprehensive analysis of the global consequences caused by the development of light industry for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The ecological context allows us to focus on how light industry affects climate change, resource depletion, waste generation and water pollution. It is emphasized that the impact of light industry can create significant challenges for sustainable development related to SDG 13 (Climate action), SDG 6 (Clean water and sanitation), SDG 12 (Responsible consumption and production), SDG 14 (Life below water) and SDG 15 (Life on land). The article also examines the socio-economic context, discusses how light industry leads to persistent inequality, loss of traditional skills and cultural heritage, as well as trade imbalance. In terms of social responsibility, light industries have a history of violations of working conditions and labour rights. The socio-economic impacts considered may hinder the achievement of SDGs such as SDG 5 (Gender equality), SDG 8 (Decent work and economic growth), SDG 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure), SDG 10 (Reduced inequalities), SDG 11 (Sustainable cities and communities) and SDG 12 (Responsible consumption and production), SDG 17 (Partnerships for the goals). The theory of rational expectations is used to predict the development of light industry and its subsequent impact on sustainable development in the post-pandemic period. The prospects of applying the theory in the training of specialists for light industry are substantiated. The impact of the consequences of the pandemic and the war in Ukraine on the decision-making processes in light industry and their alignment with the sustainable development goals, taking into account civilizational challenges, is considered. In the process of research, an econometric model has been developed to determine the desired balance of interests between education and production based on rational expectations in a sustainable development environment. It advocates harmony between these two aspects, based on rational expectations, to promote sustainable development. This balance is crucial for achieving SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the goals). The properties of the model provide a wide range of applications, allowing to estimate the impact of a variety of factors on sustainable development in light industry. The developed model can be applied to estimate the values of the dependent variable for individual countries or regions, as well as to analyse the influence of independent and control variables on changes in its value. As a planning tool, the model can be adapted to develop context-sensitive sustainability strategies in light industries. The article offers ideas and practical solutions for using the potential of light industry in the pursuit of sustainable development in conditions of rational expectations.
