Security in RFID and Sensor Networks

Radio frequency identification (RFID) and wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been popular in the industrial field, and both have undergone dramatic development. RFID and WSNs are well known for their abilities in identity identification and data transmission, respectively, and hence widely used in applications for environmental and health monitoring. Though the integration of a sensor and an RFID tag was proposed to gather both RFID tag and sensed information, few previous research efforts explore the integration of data transmission modes in the RFID and WSN systems to enhance the performance of the applications. In this paper, we propose a hybrid RFID and WSN system (HRW) that synergistically integrates the traditional RFID system and WSN system for efficient data collection. HRW has hybrid smart nodes that combine the function of RFID tags, the reduced function of RFID readers, and wireless sensors. Therefore, nodes can read each other's sensed data in tags, and all data can be quickly transmitted to an RFID reader through the node that first reaches it. The RFID readers transmit the collected data to the back-end servers for data processing and management. We also propose methods to improve data transmission efficiency and to protect data privacy and avoid malicious data selective forwarding in data transmission. Comprehensive simulation and trace-driven experimental results show the high performance of HRW in terms of the cost of deployment, transmission delay and capability, and tag capacity requirement.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) are two important wireless technologies that have wide variety of applications and provide limitless future potentials. However, RFID and sensor networks almost are under development in parallel way. Integration of RFID and wireless sensor networ ks attracts little attention from research community. This paper first presents a brief introduction on RFID, and then investigates recent research works, new products/pa tents and applications that integrate RFID with sensor networks. Four types of integration are discussed. They are integrating tags with sensors, integrating tags with wireless sensor nodes, integrating readers with wir eless sensor nodes and wireless devices, and mix of RFID and sensors. New challenges and future works are discus sed in the end.

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 3rd ACM Workshop on Security of Ad Hoc and Sensor Networks (SASN'05), held in conjunction with the 12th ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security (CCS'05), November 7, 2005, in Alexandria, Virginia. This year we received a total of 39 submissions on various aspects of ad-hoc and sensor network security. The program committee selected 6 as regular papers that cover a variety of topics, including trust establishment in Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks (MANETs), security of vehicular ad-hoc networks, secure group communication, key pre-distribution for sensor networks, jamming attacks against sensor network MAC protocols, and defense against Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks. This year we continue the tradition of SASN'03 and SASN'04 to encourage the presentation and discussion of work-in-progress on ad-hoc and sensor network security. Among the 39 submissions, the program committee selected 7 papers to present in work-in-progress sessions, covering topics on anonymous routing for MANETs, key distribution for inter-group multicast in ad-hoc networks, improved topology assumptions for threshold cryptography in MANETs, RFID security, tracing in mobile wireless sensor networks, time synchronization attacks in sensor networks, and coordinated deployment for improving secure communications and sensing coverage in wireless sensor networks. In addition, the program includes a panel on Advances in Sensor and Ad-hoc Network Security and an invited keynote talk by Radha Poovandran (University of Washington) on Information Assurance in MANETs and Wireless Sensor Networks. We hope that these proceedings will serve as a valuable reference for security researchers and developers.

The Management software is also implemented. This flexible prototype is applied in warehouse to verify the feasibility.

Academicians and industry professionals have demonstrated the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Tags in construction applications in the past few years. Recently building information modelling (BIM) technology is emerging as the industry standard in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) sector. This paper combines the two technologies to monitor the movement of RFID tags in a BIM environment. Real-time monitoring of RFID tags in a building information model is an improvement over other methods of tracking construction workers, equipment and materials on the jobsite. Strategies for combining the two technologies are explored. This method of monitoring can be used to improve the safety and productivity of construction workers on a construction jobsite. This technique of monitoring RFID tags can also be used to track equipment and construction materials on a job-site. Autodesk Revit BIM software environment was used for tracking RFID tags. The paper includes discussion about the choice of RFID tags available for this method of tracking.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) and wireless sensors networks (WSNs) are two fundamental pillars that enable the Internet of Things (IoT). RFID systems are able to identify and track devices, whilst WSNs cooperate to gather and provide information from interconnected sensors. This involves challenges, for example, in transforming RFID systems with identification capabilities into sensing and computational platforms, as well as considering them as architectures of wirelessly connected sensing tags. This, together with the latest advances in WSNs and with the integration of both technologies, has resulted in the opportunity to develop novel IoT applications. This paper presents a review of these two technologies and the obstacles and challenges that need to be overcome. Some of these challenges are the efficiency of the energy harvesting, communication interference, fault tolerance, higher capacities to handling data processing, cost feasibility, and an appropriate integration of these factors. Additionally, two emerging trends in IoT are reviewed: the combination of RFID and WSNs in order to exploit their advantages and complement their limitations, and wearable sensors, which enable new promising IoT applications.

Multi-factor identity authentication protocol and indoor physical exercise identity recognition in wireless sensor network

Recent research in mobile computing envisions a future of "smart environments", where user and computing merge to realize the so called "ubiquitous society". As an exponent of mobile information units, RFID (radio frequency identification) and wireless sensor networks (WSN) play a key roll in this future. In every real-world object, RFID tag information is combined with sensor data to embody "smart" entities. These entities move freely, providing their sensor values and identity and getting in return personalized services anywhere, anytime. Entities interact, creating grouped objects that provide unified and meaningful information, widely extending the available services. But how to control this ubiquitous flow of information? How will users really benefit from it? In this paper we introduced WISSE, a framework that defines the interaction between mobile RFID/WSN entities and the services they receive.

Oilfield tubulars (typically metallic pipes) and other types of oilfield equipment are typically stored in outdoor areas and may be scattered around the field. Managing these types of inventory is challenging and costly, as it requires significant labor resources. Therefore, inventory inaccuracy is common, and data-driven decisions may not be possible in a timely manner. We propose the use of radio frequency identification (RFID) for tracking oilfield tubulars and similar, outdoor-stored, equipment. Our proposed application utilizes passive ultra-high frequency (UHF) RFID technology that enables capturing unique serial identification numbers that are attached to inventory items from a distance of several meters. Passive UHF RFID tags require no batteries to operate. Typical tag cost is low. Each tag is placed on an inventory item and corresponds to a database entry containing specific information about this item. The tag communicates its serial number using power provided by an RFID reader radio transmission. The RFID reader is securely mounted to the underside of a UAV flown over the field. Captured RFID tags are either stored locally and retrieved once the UAV lands, or are wirelessly transmitted to a constantly updating inventory database. In addition to tag ID, the captured data typically includes time and date stamp, as well as location data. This research project included the design and manufacturing of an enclosure to house a RFID reader system which includes a host computer, embedded reader, antenna, power source, and necessary components for user interface. Specialized mounts were designed and manufactured to attach the enclosure and antenna to the UAV. The project incorporated the development of "middleware", specialized software installed on the host computer to communicate with the reader. The reader handles low-level communication with the antenna. To reduce network traffic, event management and data filtering are efficiently performed. The results of several UAV flights in experimental areas are presented and discussed. Various brands of passive RFID tags for oilfield applications were tested. Particular attention was given to population density of the items, stacking configuration, vertical altitude distance between reader and tags, and time to collect inventory data for a given area of surveillance. As RFID applications are increasing in the oil, gas, solar, and other sectors of the energy production industries, UAVs can effectively be used to get important operational and inventory data. UAV use is particularly appealing in inaccessible and remote locations.

Value stream mapping (VSM) significantly monitored by integrating radio frequency identification (RFID), wireless sensor network (WSN), ZigBee wireless technologies and Labview Graphical user interface (GUI). These technologies are used for identifying, sensing, positioning, multi-hop communication and real time locating system (RTLS). Combined effect of above technologies will optimize labor and operations cost, minimize human error; improve environmental performance and information accuracy. ZigBee protocol IEEE 802.15.4 standard has been used as wireless network in variety of commercial and industrial applications. The range of tracking of RFID reader enhanced with ZigBee coordinator through ZigBee router, which overcomes the range of radio areas that do not reach signals from the RFID reader. The proposed system provides richer information of objects location, identification and their environmental status like temperature and moisture.

Wireless sensor network is an area in wireless computing research which has been receiving a lot of attention recently. This can be mainly attributed to the huge number of potential applications of a wireless sensor network. As wireless sensor networks are primarily employed for sensing tasks, the architecture of the node in the network is fairly simple making them more energy efficient. This is where the main shortcoming of a wireless sensor network is. Due to the simple architecture it is difficult to ensure security in a wireless sensor network, as security protocols need to be lightweight enough to meet the energy constraints of the nodes. This is where this paper comes up with a proposal to enhance an already existing protocol to improve both the security and efficiency of the wireless sensor network. Globalization of economy has broken trade barriers and improvements in information technology (IT) have given good greasing to the global trade by easing the flow of information between trading partners. The ability to utilize IT to ease trade has become an important issue. The current scenario of competition is not among companies, but among companies’ supply chain partners. Connective technologies have a great potential to integrate customers, information, and products across conventional supply chain boundaries, including management of manufacturing operations. Introducing Radio Frequency Identification (RFId) in supply chain has reflected a major technological advancement towards future gains by top business companies, hi this study, we examine the use of RFId technology in a supply chain (SC) and investigate its effectiveness and efficiency. The redesigned business process by implementing RFId technology to the members of a SC is investigated. The various factors affecting the SC, the challenges, and the solutions after applying RFId technology to a supply chain are also outlined. Practical applications related to tracking the movement of goods in diverse industrial sectors reflect the effectiveness of this technology. The analysis shows how pioneer implementers of RFId technology have improved the efficiency of SC and gained an edge over their competitors because of the reduced inventories. The initial pain of RFId implementation is outweighed by gains in long-term.

There are many protocols proposed for protecting Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system privacy and security. A number of these protocols are designed for protecting long-term security of RFID system using symmetric key or public key cryptosystem. Others are designed for protecting user anonymity and privacy. In practice, the use of RFID technology often has a short lifespan, such as commodity check out, supply chain management and so on. Furthermore, we know that designing a long-term security architecture to protect the security and privacy of RFID tags information requires a thorough consideration from many different aspects. However, any security enhancement on RFID technology will jack up its cost which may be detrimental to its widespread deployment. Due to the severe constraints of RFID tag resources (e.g., power source, computing power, communication bandwidth) and open air communication nature of RFID usage, it is a great challenge to secure a typical RFID system. For example, computational heavy public key and symmetric key cryptography algorithms (e.g., RSA and AES) may not be suitable or over-killed to protect RFID security or privacy. These factors motivate us to research an efficient and cost effective solution for RFID security and privacy protection. In this paper, we propose a new effective generic binary tree based key agreement protocol (called BKAP) and its variations, and show how it can be applied to secure the low cost and resource constraint RFID system. This BKAP is not a general purpose key agreement protocol rather it is a special purpose protocol to protect privacy, un-traceability and anonymity in a single RFID closed system domain.
