Seismic design and analysis of underground structures
Base on the underground central business district project in the south economic development zone of Changchun, this research studied seismic performance of a large-scale complex underground commercial space structure under the severe earthquake action. A three-dimensio nal dynamic model was established with the finite element program MIDAS/GTS. The response of the main structure was obtained using time history analysis method, including the storey relative displacement and storey drift angle between adjacent structures. The numerical results show that the structure can satisfy the requirements of the seismic performance under the severe earthquake action. The results could be regarded as a valuable reference in design practice.

Practical seismic analysis of large underground structures: Theory and application
Due to the conceptual clarity and calculational simplicity, practical methods for seismic analysis have been widely used in seismic design and calculation of underground structures. All of the commonly adopted practical methods assume that the earthquake inertia force of the analysis model equals that of free-field. However, this assumption neglects the influence of underground structures on their surrounding soil layers, and may lead to significant errors in both conceptual and computational terms when the size of a structure increases. This article focuses on the practical seismic analysis of large underground structures. Theoretical derivation is demonstrated on the basis of the establishment of mechanical models of the soil-structure system and free-field, and consequently, the quantitative relation between the seismic acceleration response of the soil-structure system and that of free-field is obtained. This relation can be used to revise the earthquake inertia force applied to the analysis model so that the calculation accuracy is effectively improved. By doing so, a revised pushover analysis method, which combines the traditional pushover analysis and theoretical derivation, is proposed in order to be appropriate to seismic analysis of large underground structures. Moreover, an example of application of the proposed method is given, in which a selected large underground structure is analyzed. The results show that this revised method has higher efficiency than the traditional method thanks to the revision of the earthquake inertia force.

As is known, underground facilities are an integral part of the infrastructure of modern society. These objects have some specific characteristics such as complex construction, high cost, long life cycle, etc. Once it is destroyed, the direct and indirect losses are more seriousness than the general structure in the ground. Under-ground facilities built in areas subject to earthquake activity must withstand both seismic and static loading. Therefore, it is very important to carry on the seismic design of the underground structure in a safe and economi-cal way. The distinctive paper presents a summary of the current state of seismic analysis for underground struc-tures. Classification and brief overview of methods of seismic analysis of underground structures (force-based methods, displacement-based methods, numerical methods of seismic analysis of coupled system “soil – under-ground structure”) are presented, problems of soil-structure interaction are under consideration as well. So-called static finite element method with substructure technique for seismic analysis of underground structures is de-scribed.

With the soil constitutive model developed for the dynamic large deformation of soft soil, a finite element model was constructed to simulate the soil–underground structure static and dynamic coupling interaction system, in which the dynamic contact between soil and underground structure and the dynamic damage of reinforced concrete were considered. The seismic performance and damage mechanism of the large underground subway station in different soil foundations were investigated and evaluated in detail. It was proven that the interaction mechanism between the soil and underground structure would change with the type of soil foundation and the peak acceleration of input ground motion, which can be evaluated by the interaction coefficient between the soils and underground structure. At the same time, some regulations on the seismic performance of underground structure in China code are already unsuitable for evaluating the seismic performance of a large underground subway station in the soft soil foundation or subjected to a strong earthquake, which should be investigate by the specialized time–history analysis method instead. In this study, five seismic performance levels were firstly defined by the inter-storey drift angle of underground structure and corresponding earthquake damage states.
Read moreA three-stage damage detection method for large-scale space structures using forward substructuring approach and enhanced bat optimization algorithm
In this study, an efficient three-stage method is proposed for damage detection of large-scale space structures by employing forward substructuring approach, modal strain energy and enhanced bat algorithm (EBA) optimization. EBA is a modified version of BA that is proposed in this paper and used a passive congregation operator to improve the performance of standard BA. In the first stage, the global structure is divided into manageable substructures. The stiffness matrices of independent substructures are obtained based on Kron’s substructuring method. Then a modal strain energy-based index is employed to precisely locate the eventual damages of the structure. In the third stage, damage severities are estimated via EBA using the second-stage results. To demonstrate the ability of the proposed method for detection of multiple structural damages, large-scale space structures with different types of damage scenarios are considered. The results show that the proposed method can detect the exact locations and severity of damages highly accurate in space structures.

Read moreA BOUNDARY FORCED RESPONSE DISPLACEMENT METHOD FOR SEISMIC ANALYSIS OF SYMMETRICAL UNDERGROUND STRUCTURES
A boundary forced response displacement method is proposed for the seismic analysis of symmetrical underground structures based on the requirement of quasi-static pushover test of soil-underground structure systems. The implementation procedure and special features of the method are introduced in detail. We took the Daikai subway station which was damaged during the Kobe earthquake in Japan as an example for the analysis, and compared the results of boundary forced response displacement method, the FEM seismic deformation method and the dynamic time-history analysis method. The results show that the accuracy of the new method was much higher than the FEM seismic deformation method when the width of the model was reasonable. The errors of the internal forces and the story drift were less than 15%. The new method is an effective simplified method for seismic response analysis of symmetrical underground structures. The attenuation law of lateral boundary forced displacement was analyzed. It provides references for the quasi-static pushover test of soil-underground structure system.

Effect of earthquake on stability of subway station and ground motions of surrounding rock masses
The effect of earthquakes on the stability of the subway station and ground motions of surrounding rock masses, plays a key role in the seismic design of the subway station to avoid severe damage to subway station itself and adjacent structures. Most of the reported cases in the literatures on the effect of earthquake on ground motions focused on the ground motions without considering underground structures. In this study, the effect of earthquakes on the stability of the subway station, and ground motions of surrounding rock masses were investigated by using the Flac3d. The ground acceleration and safety factor of tunnel lining were highlighted. The results of the numerical analysis indicated the presence of a subway station has a great influence on ground motions, especially for the vertical ground acceleration. The ground acceleration increases with the decrease of buried depth. The amplification factor of ground acceleration is about 1.42. It exists an amplification region above the subway station with the width of 15 m. The safety factor of tunnel lining in subway station has a significant decrease in the maximum decrease rate of 67 %. The safety factor of tunnel lining except for tunnel crown and bottom changes periodic. Ground acceleration will induce extrusion or detach between surrounding rock masses and tunnel lining, and the direction of ground acceleration has a great influence on distribution of safety factor. The side wall and arch feet of tunnel lining is the most unfavorable part. Special attention should be paid to the side wall and arch feet of the subway station during seismic design.
