Sentiment analysis using fuzzy logic: A comprehensive literature review

Sentiment analysis has emerged as a powerful tool in financial markets, offering the ability to harness market participants' collective wisdom and emotions to make more informed investment decisions. This research paper presents a comprehensive literature review on sentiment analysis models in predicting stock prices, focusing on the Bank Nifty Index, a critical benchmark in the Indian financial sector. The review begins by elucidating the significance of sentiment analysis in stock price prediction, highlighting its pivotal role in capturing market sentiment, investor emotions, and their impact on asset valuations. A detailed overview of sentiment sources, encompassing financial news, social media, reports, and other relevant data streams, provides insight into the rich tapestry of information that sentiment analysis can leverage. The paper delves into various sentiment analysis approaches, from traditional lexicon-based and rule-based methods to cutting-edge machine learning and deep learning techniques. It elucidates the intricate process of integrating sentiment analysis with stock price prediction models, exploring feature concatenation, time series integration, and weighted data to incorporate sentiment insights effectively. Evaluation metrics crucial for assessing the performance of both sentiment analysis models and stock price prediction models are thoroughly discussed. It concludes by highlighting the substantial potential of sentiment analysis in augmenting stock price prediction, offering investors and traders valuable tools to navigate the complexities of financial markets.

This study explores the role of sentiment analysis as a predictive tool for understanding and forecasting product launch success in the digital market. Sentiment analysis involves the classification of consumer sentiment expressed on social media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram, and it can significantly impact businesses by predicting consumer behavior and product performance. The research highlights the relationship between social media sentiment and product success, demonstrating that positive sentiment is strongly correlated with higher sales and consumer engagement, while negative sentiment can lead to declines. Machine learning models, including Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Random Forest, were employed to classify sentiment from large volumes of social media data and correlate it with product performance indicators such as sales volume and consumer interaction. The study found that sentiment analysis models were highly effective in predicting product success, with positive sentiment generally driving product profitability and negative sentiment posing a potential threat to brand reputation. Moreover, the analysis showed that social media sentiment provides real-time insights into consumer perceptions, enabling businesses to quickly adjust marketing strategies and product development plans. These findings underscore the importance of integrating sentiment analysis into product launch evaluations and strategic decision-making. Future research should explore the integration of sentiment analysis with other predictive market models and investigate the effects of fake reviews and post-purchase consumer behaviors on product success.

BackgroundLoneliness is a global public health issue affecting a considerable number of people as well as burdening the public health system and increasing the risk of other life-threatening and life-damaging conditions. In USA an estimated 17% adults aged 18–70 report loneliness. The monetary loss as result of loneliness is estimated to be between USD 8074.80 and USD 12,0777.70 per person per year in the United Kingdom. But the dynamics of loneliness are not understood. Social media platforms have become a valuable source of data to study this phenomenon. ObjectivesThis paper aims to visualize the frequency of loneliness-related themes and topics in Twitter data. By using natural language (NLP) processing, sentiment analysis, and topic modeling, we seek to understand prevalent sentiments and concerns. Through interactive tree maps and radar plots, we present an engaging view of loneliness dimensions, allowing users to explore and gain insights into this issue on social media. We focus on comparative analysis of USA and India through analyzing tweets from both countries on loneliness. These two countries are the biggest countries population-wise where access to Twitter is legally allowed. MethodsThis study consists of two parts. In the first part, we employ NLP techniques and machine learning algorithms to extract and analyze tweets containing keywords related to loneliness. Through sentiment analysis and topic modeling, we discern linguistic patterns and contextual information to categorize the recurring themes and topics. Advanced text analytics is used to gain nuanced insights into the experiences, emotions, and challenges connected with loneliness. In the second part, interactive visualizations are developed to present the findings in an engaging and intuitive manner. Techniques such as tree maps and radar plots are utilized to transform the analyzed data into visually appealing representations. ResultsThe analysis of Twitter data yields valuable knowledge about the prevalence and nature of themes and topics associated with loneliness. The interactive visualizations present a comprehensive view of the sentiments and concerns expressed by Twitter users. These interactive plots provide a holistic view of the distribution of themes and topics associated with loneliness, allowing experts to explore and interact with the data, gaining deeper insights into the complexities surrounding this issue. ConclusionThis paper successfully explores themes and topics related to loneliness on Twitter by employing NLP, sentiment analysis, and topic modeling. The interactive visualizations enhance the accessibility and usability of the findings, providing valuable insights for various stakeholders. The study contributes to a deeper comprehension of loneliness in the context of social media.

Emotion detection (ED) and sentiment analysis (SA) play a vital role in identifying an individual’s level of interest in any given field. Humans use facial expressions, voice pitch, gestures, and words to convey their emotions. Emotion detection and sentiment analysis in English and Chinese have received much attention in the last decade. Still, poor-resource languages such as Urdu have been mostly disregarded, which is the primary focus of this research. Roman Urdu should also be investigated like other languages because social media platforms are frequently used for communication. Roman Urdu faces a significant challenge in the absence of corpus for emotion detection and sentiment analysis because linguistic resources are vital for natural language processing. In this study, we create a corpus of 1021 sentences for emotion detection and 20,251 sentences for sentiment analysis, both obtained from various areas, and annotate it with the aid of human annotators from six and three classes, respectively. In order to train large-scale unlabeled data, the bag-of-word, term frequency-inverse document frequency, and Skip-gram models are employed, and the learned word vector is then fed into the CNN-LSTM model. In addition to our proposed approach, we also use other fundamental algorithms, including a convolutional neural network, long short-term memory, artificial neural networks, and recurrent neural networks for comparison. The result indicates that the CNN-LSTM proposed method paired with Word2Vec is more effective than other approaches regarding emotion detection and evaluating sentiment analysis in Roman Urdu. Furthermore, we compare our based model with some previous work. Both emotion detection and sentiment analysis have seen significant improvements, jumping from an accuracy of 85% to 95% and from 89% to 93.3%, respectively.

As digital marketing is becoming more popular, the number of customer views on brands is increasing rapidly. This makes it harder for companies to assess their brand image or digitally market their products on the web. We present a lexicon-based approach to extracting sentiment and emotion from tweets for digital marketing purposes. We collect ten thousand tweets related to ten technology brands: Apple, Google, Microsoft, Samsung, GE, IBM, Intel, Facebook, Oracle and HP. We perform sentiment analysis using SentiWordNet while we detect emotions using the NRC Hashtag Emotion Lexicon. We compare and combine the scores obtained from the two lexicons into one result per tweet. We describe the execution process of our experiment and show that the accuracy of the combined approach of sentiment and emotion analysis is enhanced over the independent approaches of sentiment analysis or emotion analysis.

<span lang="EN-US">Online discussion forums are widely used for active textual interaction between lecturers and students, and to see how the students have progressed in a learning process. The objective of this study is to compare appropriate machine-learning models to assess sentiments and Bloom’s epistemic taxonomy based on textual comments in educational discussion forums. The proposed method is called the hierarchical approach of Bloom-Epistemic and Sentiment Analysis (BE-Sent). The research methodology consists of three main steps. The first step is the data collection from the internal discussion forum and YouTube comments of a Web Programming channel. The next step is text preprocessing to annotate the text and clear unimportant words. Furthermore, with the text dataset that has been successfully cleaned, sentiment analysis and epistemic categorization will be done in each sentence of the text. Sentiment analysis is divided into three categories: positive, negative, and neutral. Bloom’s epistemic is divided into six categories: remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating. This research has succeeded in producing a course learning subsystem that assesses opinions based on text reviews of discussion forums according to the category of sentiment and epistemic analysis.</span>

We present the technologies and host components developed to power a speech-based dialogue manager with affective capabilities. The overall goal is that the system adapts its response to the sentiment and arousal level of the user inferred by analysing the linguistic and paralinguistic information embedded in his or her interaction. A linguistic-based, dedicated sentiment analysis component determines the body of the system response. A paralinguistic-based, dedicated arousal recognition component adjusts the energy level to convey in the affective system response. The sentiment analysis model is trained using the CMU-MOSEI dataset and implements a hierarchical contextual attention fusion network, which scores an Unweighted Average Recall (UAR) of 79.04 % on the test set when tackling the task as a binary classification problem. The arousal recognition model is trained using the MSP-Podcast corpus. This model extracts the Mel-spectrogram representations of the speech signals, which are exploited with a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) trained from scratch, and scores a UAR of 61.11 % on the test set when tackling the task as a three-class classification problem. Furthermore, we highlight two sample dialogues implemented at the system back-end to detail how the sentiment and arousal inferences are coupled to determine the affective system response. These are also showcased in a proof of concept demonstrator. We publicly release the trained models to provide the research community with off-the-shelf sentiment analysis and arousal recognition tools.

This thesis examines the issue of ill-formed text (microtext) and shows its impact on sentiment analysis. The source of microtext is Twitter, WhatsApp, Facebook and other social media platforms. Words or phrases not in their standard language format like “lol” (laugh out loud), “c u 2nite” (see you tonight) and “plz” (please) are called out of vocabulary (OOV) terms. On the other hand, words or phrases in their standard forms, for example, “tonight”, “love”, or “talk to you later”, are called In Vocabulary (IV) terms. The motivation behind microtext normalization is its growing presence on both online and offline platforms. Microtext might appear to be an ill-formed text, which requires find-and-replace methods. Traditionally, in a Natural Language Processing (NLP) context, microtexts such as abbreviations and length shortening or extending are normalized, but phonemic and graphemic variation is often ignored. However, the features of microtext can be traced back to social, cognitive and geographic influences. To understand social media text, it is essential to develop a microtext normalization module for traditional and modern NLP models. The first section of this thesis focuses on combining unsupervised learning methods in 2 different chapters, 4 and 5. The first method includes lexicon creation to transform the most frequent microtexts and emoticons on social media and applies them to sentiment analysis. This method shows an accuracy increase of 4% when microtext normalization is applied before sentiment analysis. This method is extended with an application to a pre-trained chatbot to improve the chatbot’s understanding of microtext (social media slangs). This method shows a mean BLEU score of 0.8 for the SMS and Tweet dataset. The second method incorporates a phonetic based approach to transform any microtext into its phonetic equivalent before 1normalizing it. This method shows an accuracy improvement of 6% for sentiment analysis on SenticNet. The second part of the unsupervised learning is in Chapter 5, introducing the IPA-based method for microtext normalization and sentiment analysis. Epitran was used to transform a word to its International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) equivalent. The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is an alphabetic system of phonetic notation based primarily on the Latin script. There is a significant improvement in microtext normalization task and sentiment analysis over Soundex. The results also show that there is very little redundancy when words are transformed to phonetics in IPA. In addition, the accuracy of polarity detection using this method has an improvement over baseline by 5%. Chapter 6 discusses a simple sequence-to-sequence based Deep Learning method. As the language is dynamic, it is not easy to maintain the lexicon. Deep Learning alleviates the static lexicon with a probabilistic model to transform microtext into its standard form. The findings suggest that a semiotic class of microtext was easy to transform, whereas the phonetic class of microtext was not handled easily. The proposed model improves the pre-trained sentiment analysis model by 4%. We also introduce a corpus for English microtext normalization. The corpus contains microtext-containing sentences along with their correctly spelt sentences and their correct polarity. This dataset can tackle two NLP problems, i.e., microtext normalization and sentiment analysis. This corpus consists of 38% positive, 39.9% negative and 22.1% neutral. A pre-trained model shows an accuracy of 46.4 % on OOV text for sentiment analysis, showing considerable room for improvement. In summary, this thesis introduces several approaches to microtext normalization analysis and focuses on sentiment analysis application. Microtext cannot be thought of as a one-dimensional problem to NLP. It encapsulates many factors like regional (geographical), ethnic (national and racial), and social (class, age, gender, socioeconomic status and education), which cannot be ignored given the growing importance of social media in our daily life.

The rise of social media has led to an increase in toxic language, hate speech, and offensive content. While extensive research exists for widely spoken languages like English, Slovak remains underrepresented due to the lack of high-quality datasets. This gap limits the development of effective models for toxicity detection and sentiment analysis in Slovak. To address this, we introduce three new annotated Slovak datasets focused on toxic language, offensive language, hate speech detection, and sentiment analysis. These native datasets provide a more reliable foundation for automated moderation compared to machine-translated alternatives. Our research also highlights the real-world impact of online toxicity, including social polarization and psychological distress, emphasizing the need for proactive detection systems on social media platforms. This paper reviews existing Slovak datasets, presents our newly developed resources, and provides a comparative analysis. Finally, we outline key contributions and suggest future directions for improving toxic language detection in Slovak.

In natural language processing (NLP), Sentiment analysis is flourishing rapidly as it aims at finding the emotional tone behind a piece of text and helps in understanding the attitudes, opinions, and emotions expressed within an online mention. The internet is flooded with large amounts of data such as texts, photos, audio, and video. With the help of sentiment analysis, we can find useful information from this data. This paper presents various approaches in sentiment analysis used by researchers and the major challenges faced in this field. By analyzing different papers, we came to know that the most widely used techniques in machine learning are Naïve Bayes and SVM and in NLP, the lexicon-based approach is used. With the advancement in technology, sentiment analysis will be available for the public and smaller companies as well.

Nowadays, with the increasing number and use of social media platforms, people now share their experiences about a product they have bought or a place they have been to on social media platforms more frequently. Considering the volume of data on social media platforms, it is considered that there is some meaningful information for institutions or companies in the reviews and experiences shared on social media platforms. As such, it is important to improve the methods of extracting meaningful information from the reviews and experiences shared on social media and to know which method is better. In this study, the classification successes of the bag of words and the fastText word representation methods, which are among the word representation methods in sentiment analysis methods mentioned above, were compared by using Turkish reviews performed for touristic places. Besides, while performing the comparison process, it was measured whether the process of separating the words into their roots and negation of the words, which is the preliminary stage of the sentiment analysis process, contributed to the classification success. In the study, both two-class (positive, negative) sentiment analysis and three-class (positive, negative, neutral) sentiment analysis were performed. Six data sets were created to carry out the mentioned comparison operations. The data sets were first classified using the Naive Bayes (NB), Multinomial Naive Bayes (MNB), k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) and Support Vector Machines (SVM) algorithms, which are frequently used in text mining, and based on bag of words word representation method, they were classified with WEKA program. After the test results of all data sets were obtained according to the bag of words word representation method, the tests of the fastText word representation method were carried out using the fastText library of the Python programming language. Classification procedures were carried out with 10-fold cross-validation methods, and f-score values of the classification processes were obtained. Finally, it was determined that bag of words word representation method performed a more successful classification than the fastText word representation method in two-class emotion analysis, while the fastText word representation method performed a more successful classification process than bag of words word representation method in three-class emotional analysis. It was observed that the process of separating the words into their roots and negating the words, which are the preliminary processes of sentiment analysis, did not contribute positively or negatively to the classification processes performed with the fastText word representation method. However, it was determined that it had a minor contribution to sentiment analysis processes performed by using bag of words word representation method. In the two-class sentiment analysis, the most successful classification result was achieved by using the machine learning model created with the SVM algorithm with the value of 0.91 f-score employing bag of words word representation method. In the three-class sentiment analysis, the most successful classification result was achieved with the machine learning model created using the fastText word representation method with the value of 0.78 f-score.

Purpose–This comprehensive review aims to analyze sentiment analysis models, focusing on their effectiveness in managing polarity shifts (positive, neutral, and negative sentiments). The investigation delves into specific aspects, including feature selection/extraction techniques, data augmentation, input datasets, and evaluation metrics. The goal is to provide valuable insights for both theoretical understanding and practical applications, guiding advanced research. Method–Following Kitchenham’s framework, the review conducts an exhaustive literature search, emphasizing entities embedded within sentiment analysis models. This methodological approach explores intricate challenges associated with polarity shifts, revealing opportunities for future research. Results–Key findings highlight the efficacy of sentiment analysis models in handling polarity shifts. Recursive Feature Elimination emerges as the most effective wrapper-based feature selection technique, with Word2Vec standing out for word embeddings. Notably, negation is identified as a significant polarity shifter. The study also identifies common datasets, machine learning, and deep-learning models, emphasizing the effectiveness of hybrid models and ensembles. Conclusion–This systematic review offers a comprehensive analysis of sentiment analysis models, providing insights into their status and key trends. The findings contribute to advancing the field, offering valuable guidance for researchers, practitioners, and developers working on polarity shift challenges, particularly in addressing implicit negation. Recommendations–Future research should prioritize refining models addressing implicit negation, requiring empirical investigations to assess their effectiveness. Additionally, efforts should focus on developing standardized evaluation metrics to accurately capture the intricacies of polarity shifts, ensuring a comprehensive assessment of model performance. Implementing these recommendations will advance the state-of-the-art. Research Implications–The review suggests practical and theoretical implications by highlighting effective models and their embedded entities. Recognition of explicit negation underscores theneed for models capable of discerning and addressing negated sentiments. Practitioners are encouraged to adopt diverse strategies, and research opportunities lie in exploring implicit negation for ongoing innovation in sentiment analysis research. Sentiment analysis refers to the automated process of identifying the underlying emotional tone conveyed in a text. This task has become increasingly crucial today due to the exponential growth of opinion-oriented text generation on various online platforms including social media and e-commerce websites. The process of sentiment analysis has evolved through different phases like the use of handcrafted rules, sentiment-oriented dictionaries, machine learning, deep learning, transformer models, and large language models. These different phases have enriched the field of sentiment analysis and enabled it to get better insights into text for sentiment analysis. One of the most impactful developments in sentiment analysis was the creation of embedding’s for words or sentences, which are useful for representing unstructured data as structured data. These embedding are representing words or sentences as numerical vectors in a high-dimensional space and have proven effective in capturing the semantic relationships between words. By leveraging the power of embedding’s, sentiment analysis models can understand the complexities of human language and provide more precise insights into people's emotions and opinions. However, word embedding’s not inherently generated for sentiment analysis, which means that they are not inherently sentiment-oriented. Therefore, many researchers have focused on developing sentiment-oriented word embedding’s for sentiment words, but they have overlooked the importance of intensity words such as “little”, “high”, and “extremely”. These intensity words determine the level of sentiment expressed in text, which is particularly useful for fine-level sentiment analysis. To address this issue, a review proposes an intensity-aware word embedding development model and sentiment analysis with ML.

A large scale of data is posted every day on the social media platforms. Sentiment analysis classification is one of the useful techniques to extract useful information from those data. To train sentiment analysis models there is a need for labeled data, and it is one of the challenging issues. The available datasets are collected and labeled manually by humans which is a time-consuming process. The identification of machine learning classifier that provides the best performance is a second issue in sentiment analysis. A new hybrid sentiment analysis model is proposed in this paper. It relies on the use of the lexicon-based approach and majority voting. The best performance of the proposed model is when using the set of classifiers: NB, LogReg and SGD, it outperforms all the models with a single classifier in terms of accuracy, precision, recall and F-score.

The purpose of this study is to understand public awareness of cybersecurity-related issues and discussions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Employees and confidential organizational data are vulnerable to cyber-attacks as a result of the pandemic, which has raised concerns about cyber security about the new normal of working from home. The public’s main sentiments and aspects related to cyber security concerns have been mined from tweets on the microblogging social media website Twitter. Sentiment Analysis and Topic Modeling techniques have been applied to understand the perspectives, emotions, and themes discussed by people. The analysis reveals people are becoming more aware of cybercrime-related concerns and are more positive than negative in combating the challenge of cybercrime. The paper also highlights the main themes revealed by Topic Modeling.
