Concerning the three fundamental first-order fuzzy logics, the set of logically valid formulae is \(\varPi _2\)-complete for Łukasiewicz logic, \(\varPi _2\)-hard for Product logic, and \(\varSigma _1\)-complete for Godel logic, as with classical first-order logic. Among these fuzzy logics, only Godel logic is recursively axiomatisable. Hence, it was necessary to provide a hyperresolution-based proof method suitable for automated deduction, as one has done for classical logic. As another step, we can incorporate a countable set of intermediate truth constants of the form \(\bar{c}\), \(c\in (0,1)\), together with the equality, Open image in new window, strict order, Open image in new window, projection, Open image in new window, operators in Godel logic; and modify the hyperresolution calculus, inferring over so-called order clauses. We shall investigate the deduction problem of a formula from a countable theory in this expansion and the so-called canonical standard completeness, where the semantics of Godel logic is given by the standard \(\varvec{G}\)-algebra as well as truth constants are interpreted by ‘themselves’. The hyperresolution calculus is refutation sound and complete for a countable order clausal theory under a certain condition for the set of truth constants occurring in the theory. We get an affirmative solution to the open problem of recursive enumerability of unsatisfiable formulae in this expansion of Godel logic.

This chapter deals with fuzzy logic in Zadeh’s ‘narrow sense’ [27], pointing to t-norm based truth functional logics, where the truth values model ‘degrees of truth’, identified with reals from the unit interval [0,1]. In particular, we are interested in Łukasiewicz logic Ł and some of its variants, but also in Godel logic G, and in Product logic P. The literature on formal deduction systems for these and related many-valued logics is vast and even more has been written about their algebraic background. We refer to the monographs [23], [22], and [10] for more information and references. Most authors take the usefulness of these logics in the context of approximate reasoning, i.e., reasoning with vague and imprecise notions for granted. However the corresponding proof systems are hardly ever explicitly related to models of correct reasoning with vague information. In other words: the challenge to derive particular fuzzy logics from first principles about approximate reasoning is not addressed explicitly. The reference to general models of reasoning and to theories of vagueness – a prolific discourse in contemporary analytic philosophy – is only implicit, if not simply missing, in most presentations of inference systems for fuzzy logics. Some notable exceptions, where an explicit semantic foundation for particular fuzzy logics is aimed at, are: Ruspini’s similarity semantics [35]; voting semantics [25]; ‘re-randomizing semantics’ [24]; measurement-theoretic justifications [7]; the Ulam-Renyi game based interpretation of D. Mundici [29]; and ‘acceptability semantics’ of J. Paris [31]. As we have argued elsewhere [12], these formal semantics for various t-norm based logics (in particular Łukasiewicz logic) should be placed in the wider discourse about adequate theories of vagueness, a prolific subfield of analytic philosophy.

Despite great effort in research and teaching as well as in raising women’s quotas in the public sector and in enterprises, a gender gap in computer science can still be observed. The reasons are manifold, including the lack of interest of girls because of existing stereotypes of male nerds, misconceptions in the field of computer science, and concrete differences in students’ self-concept and performance. Girls do not choose schools or studies in the field of computer science because working on computers or coding is unattractive to them. Research shows poorer performance, missing interest, and lower self-concept for girls in secondary computing education as well as a high dropout rate of female students in computer science courses at the bachelor’s level. Software development exams contribute to those high dropout rates, and women often choose a different subject or even stop their university education altogether. This leads to fewer female employees in the field of computer science, and this situation calls for special measures at several levels. The current paper provides an overview of the initiatives of our university that aim to address several aspects of the gender gap. The programs offered aim to (1) increase interest in computer science and recruit (highly) gifted girls for our talent programs, (2) recruit and support female bachelor’s and master’s students in computer science, and (3) redesign programming courses and teaching materials to reduce the gender gap in performance and support, especially for female students. This study also describes a cyber tutoring program in which highly gifted girls between 13 and 16 years collaborate with and are supervised by female role models in higher positions in STEM. The evaluation results gained in the first year of this case study are promising and suggest that the extension and further development of the program would be advantageous.

Optimization problems arise in various fields of science, engineering, and industry. In many occasions, such optimization problems, particularly in the present scenario, involve a variety of decision variables and complex structured objectives, and constraints. Often, the classical or traditional optimization techniques face difficulty in solving such real world optimization problems in their original form. Due to deficiencies of classical optimization algorithms in solving large-scale, highly non-linear, and often non-differentiable problems, there is a need to develop efficient and robust computational algorithms, which can solve problems, numerically irrespective of their sizes. Taking inspiration from nature to develop computationally efficient algorithms is one way to deal with real world optimization problems. Broadly, one can put these algorithms in the field of computational sciences and in particular, to computational intelligence. Formally, computational intelligence (CI) is a set of nature-inspired computational methodologies and approaches to solve complex real world problems. The major constituents of CI are Fuzzy Systems (FS), Neural Networks (NN), and Swarm Intelligence (SI) and Evolutionary Computation (EC). Computational intelligence techniques are powerful, efficient, flexible, and reliable. Swarm Intelligence and Evolutionary Computation are two very useful components of computational intelligence that are primarily used to solve optimization problems. This book primarily concerns with various swarm and evolutionary optimization algorithms. This chapter provides a brief introduction to swarm and evolutionary algorithms.

Philosophy enriches and dynamizes a science in its development. The choice of a good philosophical system becomes an unproductive debate but is essential in gaining an understanding of the importance of developing a coherent and comprehensive framework of thought to understand social phenomena. This research is a scientific reflection on the question of the best choice of philosophical systems and the belief in the existence of absolute and relativistic philosophy. This scientific reflection uses a qualitative narrative method in a literature review to answer the research question. Based on the research results, the author sees that a philosophical system has a specificity in contributing to the field of life and science independently. The author also provides a review of answers to the choice of a philosophical system that is suitable for the Doctoral program in Computer Science, namely Information Systems. The answer to the existence of a coherent philosophical system that underlies human wisdom is presented by the author in this paper. This scientific reflection is expected to contribute to the science of knowledge, especially the philosophy of science and the application of research stages in the field of Computer Science. Further research needs to be done to obtain the accuracy of a philosophical system that is suitable for the research topic and other fields of science.

When seeking solutions to current problems in the field of computer science – and other fields – we encounter situations where traditional approaches no longer bring the desired results. Our cognitive skills also limit the implementation of reliable mental simulation within the basic set of relations. The world around us is becoming more complex and mutually interdependent, and this is reflected in the demands on computer support. Thus, in today‘s education and science in the field of computer science and all other disciplines and areas of life need to address the issue of the paradigm shift, which is generally accepted by experts. The goal of the paper is to present the systems thinking that facilitates and extends the understanding of the world through relations and linkages. Moreover, the paper introduces the essence of systems thinking and the possibilities to achieve mental a shift toward systems thinking skills. At the same time, the link between systems thinking and functional literacy is presented. We adopted the “Bathtub Test” from the variety of systems thinking tests that allow people to assess the understanding of basic systemic concepts, in order to assess the level of systems thinking. University students (potential information managers) were the examined subjects of the examination of systems thinking that was conducted over a longer time period and whose aim was to determine the status of systems thinking. . The paper demonstrates that some pedagogical concepts and activities, in our case the subject

This paper presents a fuzzy logic control strategy on four-wheel steering(4WS) vehicle based on a multi-body vehicle dynamic model. The multi-body vehicle dynamic model based on ADAMS can accurately predict the dynamics performance of the vehicle. Fuzzy logic is applied to track the yaw velocity of the two degrees of freedom ideal model through the co-simulation of ADAMS and Matlab Fuzzy control unit with the optimized membership function. The fuzzy control parameters are optimized and analyzed by a combined optimization algorithm (Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Nonlinear Programming Quadratic Line search (NLPQL) method) combined with response surface model (RSM). Single lane change test is chosen to validate the fuzzy control logic strategy. Simulation result shows that four-wheel steering vehicle with the fuzzy control logic strategy can improve vehicle handling stability greatly comparing with traditional front wheel steering.

We present our process and development of a web-based system to explore the publication networks of faculty in California public universities in the fields of computer science and electrical engineering. Our project explores collaboration networks in the fields of computer science and electrical engineering with a focus on publication networks and an analysis of these collaborations with a focus on geospatial organization (which institutions are collaborating with which other institutions). We present our data gathering process, which relies on the Scopus[9] database (Scopus represents a “comprehensive overview of the world’s scientific research output across all disciplines”), and we present the development of a web-based tool using python and the Google Maps API [12] in order to allow visualizations and explorations of geospatial structures of the publications networks. These visualizations drove further network analysis, which we present here as well.

Veiled Figures: Pioneering Women Religious in the Sciences Jennifer A Head Traditionally, the term ‘Catholic Sister’ has conjured an image of either a cloistered woman in contemplative prayer or a woman in a habit, working as a nurse or teacher. Today that image has expanded to a woman wearing a cross around her neck and working in pastoral care, parish ministry or social justice movements. Rarely, if ever, does this image include a woman at the forefront of computer science, working with plutonium or providing flight instruction to future military pilots. This article explores some of the ‘hidden history’ of Catholic women religious in science.1 This hidden history of women religious includes the first female pharmacist in America, the creator of the first reasonably priced and easily constructed incubator for premature babies and one of the first women to receive a PhD in the field of computer science. Sisters were also pioneers in the fields of zoology, cytogenetics, astrophysics and the treatment of polio. In many cases, they were the first women granted advanced degrees from institutions previously only open to men. Many of these women were also strong advocates for the inclusion of women in the sciences – one even permitted her students to bring their children to class, if childcare was not available. The first two sisters I encountered were both Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVMs): Sr Mary Kenneth Keller (1913–85) and Sr Mary Therese Langerbeck (1902–93). Mary Kenneth Keller (1913–85), computer scientist Sister Mary Kenneth Keller was among the first women to receive a PhD in computer science. She received her degree from the University of WisconsinMadison in 1964 and was the first person to receive such a degree from that educational institution. Sr Kenneth first became interested in the field of computer science while studying for a Master’s degree in Mathematics at DePaul University in the early 1950s. In 1958, she applied for a six-month National Science Foundation workshop at Dartmouth University’s Computer Veiled Figures: Pioneering Women Religious in the Sciences Studies • volume 107 • number 427 293 Center. She was the first woman permitted to work in the computer centre. As part of this workshop, she assisted in the development of BASIC – the first ‘easy to learn’ computer language. After receiving her PhD, she was appointed chair of the newly created computer science department at Clarke College (now Clarke University), a position she would hold for almost twenty years. At the time, Clarke was a women’s college, though it has since gone ‘co-ed’. Under Sr Kenneth’s leadership, the programme grew to include a master’s degree programme in Computer Applications in Education. The programme was also open to students from nearby Loras College, as well as to teachers, local business owners, bankers and others for whom computer use was beginning to be a workplace requirement. Sr Kenneth was among the first to recognise the future importance of computers, noting in 1964 that students in such fields as education, psychology and the sciences were already finding uses for computers in their academic pursuits. She and other members of the computer science faculty and staff wrote programmes to assist academic departments on campus. Chemistry students ran simulated experiments while psychology students used a programme to run a hypothetical ‘stat rat’ through a learning maze, saving time ‘both ours and the rat’s!’2 She also anticipated the importance computers would have in libraries, recognising that ‘its function in information retrieval will make it the hub of tomorrow’s libraries’.3 She believed that using a computer required two virtues: humility and patience. Humility, because the computer did not make mistakes – the programmer did. Patience was required in ‘de-bugging’ the programme and determining which lines of code created the mistakes.4 In addition to her responsibilities as a Clarke faculty member, Sr Kenneth authored four books in her field. She also served as a consultant for various governmental and civic groups including the State of Illinois and the City of Dubuque, Iowa. A fixture in the early ‘IT’ world of the Upper Mississippi River Valley, she once commented that ‘around Dubuque nobody buys a computer...

It is well known that women's involvement in the field of Computer Science is very low in the USA. This is viewed as a significant problem and has become a great concern to educators and professionals in the CS field. Although the low participation rate of women is an issue in many countries around the world, the truth is that it is not a universal problem: there are countries, such as countries of the former Soviet Union, that have well represented female populations in Computer Science. The Soviet society, culture and educational system in many ways are quite different than America's. It is important and helpful to explore these differences with the intention to identify factors in the Soviet system/culture that may contribute to attracting women to Computer Science. In 2005 we started an international investigation of the issue of women in CS in two different societies/cultures - American and Soviet. Our research is intended to bring a better understanding of the social perceptions and influences that make this issue a problem in the United States, and will contribute to designing better strategies in efforts of mitigating the low participation of women in the field of Computer Science. In this paper we present the results of an extensive study in one former Soviet republic, the Republic of Armenia.

With the increasing need for flexibility and adaptivity in computerized systems, the application of fuzzy expert systems is becoming increasingly commonplace in today's industry. Fuzzy logic expert systems often improve performance by allowing knowledge to generalize without requiring the knowledge engineer to anticipate all possible situations. Thus, for many types of applications, soft such as Fuzzy logic can incur lower overhead in terms of representing and engineering task knowledge. My project investigates the application of fuzzy expert systems to motion tracking. Previous research showed that Fuzzy Logic can be used to track the motion of a brightly colored object against a dark background, with relatively low development and run-time costs. The system I am developing identifies, tracks, and predicts the motion of multiple objects using unique identification patterns against a dark background. My poster will describe the fuzzy inference systems for tracking and motion prediction of such objects. An essential step to obtaining the fuzzy inputs for the motion tracking fuzzy inference system is to use convolution correlation data to obtain the centers of mass of the objects. Image processing information from the region around the center of each object provides good fuzzy inputs for recognizing object patterns and determining orientation. I am investigating two fuzzy inference systems for motion tracking and prediction in order to identify their strengths and weaknesses. In the long run, I hope to exploit the strengths of both by dividing the task between the two approaches. The Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) is effective for pattern recognition. Fuzzy Proportional Derivative (FPD) is useful for computing errors and tuning inferences. Cascading the two fuzzy systems allows the system first to acquire generalized patterns and then fine-tune them for error tolerance. To perform this work, I am using the Matlab fuzzy logic toolkit, which is a simple and flexible tool for designing fuzzy inference systems.

Multidimensional image retrieval (MIR) views an image as a multidimensional object, where each dimension is a channel for retrieval. MIR has the potential of putting at work together the many methods and techniques for image retrieval proposed in several different fields of computer science. We have developed a model of MIR, based on a fuzzy description logic, that identifies two main dimensions in an image (form and content) and views MIR as a special form of uncertain implication. In this paper we present ARIANNA, a system that implements the model. ARIANNA allows to quickly develop a prototype of a MIR application, and use it to test the adequacy of the application to the user's functional requirements.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an increasingly important and popular topic not just within the field of Computer Science but also the world at large. One of the current challenges in the field of AI is multi-agent planning, of which Swarm Intelligence (SI) is a possible solution drawing from natural systems as an inspiration. While individual agents in a flock or swarm are mostly simplistic and similar in nature, together they can develop extremely complex and emergent behaviour. A very well-known implementation of Swarm Intelligence is “Boids”. Bird like objects first introduced by Craig Reynolds in 1987 that flock and move together based on the 3 core steering behaviours of Separation, Alignment, and Cohesion. However, even current work on boids tend to let individual agents be “reactive” in nature, giving instructions to themselves based on their current state and their observations of the environment around them. This project aims to study how adding an additional layer on top of traditional flocking behaviour, by making agents “socially aware” through actively sharing opinions with each other, will affect the dynamics of a flock.
