Abstract

The underlying framework of the electric power grid hasn’t changed for a 100 years. The hierarchical, centrally controlled structure has been shown to be insufficient for the needs of the twenty-first century. Via automated control, high-power converters, advanced communications systems, sensing and metering technology, and modern energy management techniques, capacity, and network availability, the latest smart grid solution is developed to solve the problems of the current power grid. The smart grid is a hybrid electric power grid system that provides enhanced efficiency, reliability, and other benefits. The improvements to this power grid aim at: improving efficiency and safety, reducing the environmental impact and enabling customers to play a regulatory role in the network. There are several Smart Grids attributes associated with complex systems. We will get a deeper understanding and a holistic preview about the idea of smart grid in this chapter.
