Smart street lighting systems: performance, energy consumption and availability assessment

A Smart Street light (SSL) is a public lighting that incorporates technology to introduce a real time monitoring functionalities. SSL is known to be a cost-effective and sustainable choice for cities and utilities today. In enabling cities to provide proper amount of street light for local conditions, installing SSL will improve citizen satisfaction regarding security and safety, while bringing municipalities significant savings in power consumption and lighting system maintenance. Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) through its research arm, TNB Research (TNBR) has recently carried out a pilot study on the feasibility of SSL system by using energy efficient light-emitting diode (LED) lighting technology. In the study, two (2) SSL technologies have been selected and evaluated through field trial which are Securemesh 2.4 GHz Neighborhood Area Network (NAN) and Ultra Narrowband (UNB). Both SSL systems have been pilot tested at selected areas in Melaka state. This paper shall discuss their technical performance such as functionality, reliability and compatibility that have been evaluated in the study.

Street lighting systems are considered one of the most important pillars necessary for the infrastructure that must be provided in urban cities due to their positive impact on the lives of citizens. Street lighting provides comfort to citizens and makes them feel safe at night. Despite all these advantages, it brings a heavy burden on the energy consumption bill and has negative consequences for the environment. Modern technologies, such as wireless communications and the internet of things (IoT), have enabled the creation of smart street lighting systems that contribute to improving energy saving and preserving the environment compared to traditional systems. In this research, the performance and feasibility of a prototype smart street lighting system based on IoT and wireless communications were studied. This system was implemented and tested at a pilot site with the aim of enhancing energy performance and creating a smart infrastructure on the university campus. Street user data, captured by the passive infrared (PIR) sensor, is exchanged between lighting poles using the ESP-NOW protocol to create adaptive lighting. This ensures that the level of illumination by the LED luminaires around the user is greater than that behind them. The cloud server ThingSpeak was also utilized to collect and store the electrical variable data measured by this system. Additionally, images are captured and stored for street users. From the data obtained from the cloud server and energy measurements, the system has demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing energy consumption.

Streetlights are among the essential public infrastructure components for both urban and rural areas. It allows people to provide a clear vision at night and brings convenience to society. A Smart Street Lighting System uses IoT sensors and can interact with software to improve its effectiveness and utility. Since streetlights must be turned on for the entire duration of the night, it is essential to find ways of reducing energy consumption to actualize a greener society. It can be done by integrating sensors that can detect movements and control the way streetlights behave through the gathered data. This research aims to reduce the energy consumption needed for the operation of streetlights by applying appropriate IoT based techniques. An extensive discussion on the existing literature and similar systems reviews the current developments critically. The research gathered public insights through a quantitative research approach and applied this information in recommending a solution. With the help of a prototyping model, the authors demonstrated how a Smart Street Lighting System could achieve optimal performance.

Today's modern world people preferred to live the sophisticated life with all facilities. The science and technological developments are growing rapidly to meet the above requirements. With advanced innovations, Internet of Things (IoT) plays a major role to automate different areas like health monitoring, traffic management, agricultural irrigation, street lights, class rooms, etc., Currently we use manual system to operate the street lights, this leads to the enormous energy waste in all over the world and it should be changed. In this survey we studied about, how IoT is used to develop the street lights in the smart way for our modern era.It is an important fact to solve the energy crises and also to develop the street lights to the entire world. In addition, with the study on smart street lighting systems we analyzed and described different sensors and components which are used in IoT environment. All the components of this survey are frequently used and very modest but effective to make the unswerving intelligence systems.

The paper discusses a modern concept of smart street lighting that for illuminating city streets implies the use of special street lamps controlled via intelligent platforms. These platforms can regulate the intensity of lighting according to environmental conditions. At daybreak or when there is no people around, lamps’ brightness automatically decreases (or the lights entirely go down), which helps save electrical energy. As the result, expenditures from public funds on street lighting are reduced and the impact of electric power stations on the environment decreases. Street lighting is an essential part of the city infrastructure, since it performs several functions at ones. Firstly, it provides a sufficient level of illumination for traffic networks and pedestrian areas at night time, which not only enables reducing the number of traffic collisions and injuries, but also makes life of car drivers more convenient. Moreover, properly designed street lighting including street lamps on avenues, boulevards and in yards reduces the level of urban crime. Street lightning in Russia annually consumes approximately 7 billion kW/h of electric power, which is equivalent to 16 billion rubles. While producing such an amount of electric energy, millions of tons of various exhausts pollute the atmosphere. Smart street lighting systems help reduce the demand in electrical energy for outdoor illumination. The most important indicator of a civilized city is a well-lit roadway for transport – motorways. For transport on roads, various street lighting fixtures are used, but the most popular are energy-saving gas-discharge lamps, which effectively achieve full compliance with the standards and requirements for road lighting.

The amount of greenhouse gas emissions from streetlights is equivalent to 2.6 million cars with as many as 26 million streetlights in the United States. The proposed IoT controller integrates sensors to make these streetlights as hubs for smart environment monitoring with effective energy usage. Conservation of energy is one of the main concerns in the modern era, and energy coming from the sun can be utilized efficiently alongside a smart streetlight management system instead of conventional streetlight management techniques. Additionally, with streetlights being present throughout a city, the opportunity to collect city-wide weather data is proposed. To this end, a solar-powered IoT-based smart street lighting and environmental monitoring system is proposed. The proposed energy-efficient IoT-based system uses a microcontroller to control light-emitting diode (LED) streetlights depending on lighting conditions and vehicle detection, ensuring that the streetlights can be turned on when needed.

Conventional street lighting systems in most of the areas are Online at regular intervals of time irrespective of the seasonal variations. The street lights are simply switched on at afternoon and turned off in the morning. The consequence is that a large amount of Power is wasted meaninglessly. As energy consumption is an issue of increasing interest, possible energy savings in public street lighting systems are recently discussed from different viewpoints. The purpose of this work is to describe the Smart Street Lighting system, an approach to accomplish the demand for flexible public lighting systems using a Programmable Logic controller (PLC). The main difference from other computers is that PLCs are armoured for severe conditions such as dust, moisture, heat, cold etc., and have the facility for extensive input/output (I/O) arrangements. In the proposed paper, street lights are controlled using millennium 3 PLC taking the seasonal variations into consideration.

Energy monitoring and controlling systems of smart street lighting system were highly dependent on the gateway in order to perform the communication between sensors and actuators to the users. M2M technology allows the process of device control more effectively because it is not centered on the Gateway but on the devices to device related. Congestion, delays and communication errors to be a challenge in the development of M2M technology. This research proposed M2M technology to make direct communication between devices and users with less congestion, delays and communication errors. The design of embedded zigbee using M2M technology was developed as dimmer control for LED lights and communication between devices. Furthermore, zigbee communication performance have been evaluated using received signal strength (RSSI) and network throughput. The ideal distance between zigbee in barrier area is approximately 30m and −83 dBm of RSSI. In loss area is approximately 65m and −80 dBm of RSSI. Performance of zigbee device communications shows the use of direct configuration is better than using a router. So that, on configuration via router, the number of transmitting nodes should be minimized.

Due to rapid urbanization, the pollution and global warming are increasing at very higher rate. The greenery must maintain to minimize the effect of pollution and global warming. The management of waste should done in an efficient manner. Water level of the nearby rivers should monitor frequently to ameliorate the effect of floods. Smart street light systems are required to reduce the wastage of electricity. This research work proposes a development of novel IOT based application called twilio, which implemented using ROS. It facilitates the central processing unit to monitor and control the various sensor modules and send appropriate alerts to the mobile phone through SMS service. In this research work, we are automating watering greeneries, minimizing the wastage of water, monitoring the waste in dustbins, sending alerts during the emergencies like floods and fire accidents and implementing the smart street light system using SMS service.

Streetlight is an important utility which consumes large amount of energy, and a big part of energy is wasted due to improper usage. In this paper, a streetlight system has been proposed which controls the illuminance of street lamp according to traffic flow. It will illuminate the street lamp when user is present; otherwise, it will dim the lamp to its 20% illuminance. Smart streetlight system uses IoT platform with motion sensor and light sensor. The system is installed in testbed, and power consumption is observed for single day. The energy-saving for different control strategies are 96.20, 97.34, 97.34% and 95.86 have been observed.

The world population has grown exponentially in the last few decades. In the most of the world’s big cities, it is very difficult to provide the resources like energy, water, transportation and other essential services to the public due to the increase in the demands on resources and infrastructure. Internet of Things (IoT) is a technology that makes possible to keep the cities green and safe by interconnecting the devices, vehicles and infrastructure so that the energy and water consumption can be reduced and quality of the people can be improved. The objective of the smart cities could be to increase the economic growth, to construct a clean and sustainable environment, to enhance the income of the people and to make the transparent governance of the city. This chapter provides the need for Smart Street Lighting in smart cities and the suggestions for the implementation. Smart Street Lighting Framework which reduces the cost and the energy consumption is proposed. The present implementations of Intelligent street lighting around the world are also discussed.

Modernizing street lighting is a logical reaction to dynamic economic changes and energy prices. The idea for intelligent street lighting is simple, complete control over the street lights depending on the conditions. At the same time, the main objective of this system is to lower energy consumption and, consequently, less CO2 emission. The number of cities which have established new lighting systems is growing fast because it is environment-friendly and economical. Modern lighting systems have different levels of intelligence and apply different strategies for changing energy consumption patterns. The impact of changing the lighting logic is much less than using intelligent street lighting or switching from conventional lights to LEDs. However, the total energy consumption for public lighting is too high that it is worth investigating any possible way for energy efficiency improvement, even for a fraction of one percent. This research explains a simulation-based approach in three real-world implementations for energy efficiency improvement using Street Lighting Simulation. In our studies, smart street lighting provides %25 to %60 energy savings, and optimizing the lighting strategy brings up to %5 more energy efficiency.

Street lighting is an important part of the energy consumption of cities. With suitable smart lighting systems that increase energy efficiency, it is possible to save on lighting costs substantially. Intelligent street lighting systems generally consist of lamps, ballast and dimming devices located in the area to be illuminated, control units placed in different lighting zones, and central management systems that can manage and monitor these regional controls. With smart lighting systems suitable for energy efficiency, it is possible to save a great deal of lighting costs while protecting the environment. When current projects are examined, it is seen that up to 80% energy savings can be achieved when automation systems are used in street lighting. There is a need for an approach that controls the luminous flux without reducing the driver's safety and comfort, and that performs dimming studies using machine learning methods. In this paper, the smart street lighting system developed jointly by ISBAK and Panasonic is explained.
