Spatial visualization and sex differences in quantitative ability

Sex Differences in Mathematical Abilities: Commentary on the Math-Fact Retrieval Hypothesis

Geary's is the traditional view of the sexes. Yet each part of his argument – the move from sex differences in spatial ability and social preferences to a sex difference in mathematical ability, the claim that the former are biologically primary, and the sociobiological explanation of these differences – requires considerable further work. The notion of a biologically secondary ability is itself problematic.

Abstract. Sex differences in mathematical ability were examined in a nation-wide sample of 32,346 Jordanian 4th graders (age 9–10 year) on a 40-item mathematics test. Overall, boys were found to perform slightly worse ( d = −0.12) but had slightly more variation in scores ( SD = 1.02 and SD = 0.98 for boys and girls, respectively). However, when results were disaggregated by school type, single-sex versus coed (i.e., coeducational), boys were found to perform better than girls in coed schools ( d = 0.27) but worse across single-sex schools ( d = −0.37). Two-parameter item response theory analysis showed that item difficulty was similar across sexes in the full sample. Item loadings exhibited substantial departure from measurement invariance with respect to boys and girls at single-sex schools, though. For boys and girls at coed schools, both the item difficulty and item loading correlations were highly similar, evincing that measurement invariance largely held in this case. Partially consistent with findings from other countries, a correlation between item difficulty and male advantage was observed, r = .57, such that the relative male advantage increased with increased item difficulty. Complicating interpretation, this association did not replicate within coed schools. Item content, Bloom’s cognitive taxonomy category, and item position showed no relation to sex differences.

Sex differences in cognitive ability have been documented in psychological research for over a century, and the research area has seen considerable changes in theoretical perspectives and methodology. While males and females do not differ in general intelligence, an extensive body of literature documents sex differences in more specific cognitive tasks (for reviews see Halpern, 2000; Kimura, 2000; Maccoby & Jacklin, 1974). Males on average perform at a higher level on tasks that rely on visualspatial ability, and this has been linked to later gender gaps in quantitative abilities such as mathematics and science and to the underrepresentation of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)-related fields. Females as a group do better at tasks involving verbal and language abilities which have been linked to wide gender gaps in reading and writing, as well as the underrepresentation of men in postsecondary education. Some researchers have argued that sex differences in cognitive ability are declining in response to social changes in the roles and status of women, but methodological limitations and use of convenience samples have limited previous enquiries seeking to test that hypothesis. The aim of this course of research was twofold. Firstly, using the statistical technique of meta-analysis to examine the evidence for sex differences in visual-spatial, verbal and quantitative abilities, and - given the passage of time - whether they were declining in response to changes in the roles of men and women in society. This was addressed through a series of studies that examined: i) nationally representative samples of student testing data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in the United States, ii) cross-cultural samples of student testing data from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). Secondly, to determine the contribution of sex-typed personality traits and behaviours (collectively referred to as sex-role identity) to the development of individual differences in visual-spatial and verbal ability. This goal was addressed through a sequence of three experimental studies. Empirical study 1 sought to provide the most comprehensive assessment of the sex-role mediation hypothesis conducted to-date, by examining performance across a range of visual-spatial and verbal ability tasks. Subjects high in masculinity performed better on visual-spatial tasks, while subjects high in femininity performed better on verbal SEX AND SEX-ROLE DIFFERENCES IN COGNITIVE ABILITIES iii language tasks. Mediation analysis showed that sex-role identification acted as a mediator of the sex difference in cognitive tasks. Having found evidence for sex-role differences, Empirical Study 2 sought to test whether the observed sex-role differences reflected latent ability, or alternately the role of stereotype threat and task labelling on performance. The way in which a person appraises the testing situation (and the types of skills a task may require) can work hand in hand with sex-role conformity pressures to increase or to decrease task performance. Finally, Empirical Study 3 sought to address a limitation in the existing theoretical models for sex differences in cognitive ability, namely that males and females show different patterns of self-estimation of intellectual ability (termed the male-hubris female-humility problem). Study 3 examined the contribution of sex-role identity to self-estimated intelligence, as well as the accuracy of personal judgements of ability by administering the Cattel’s Culture Fair Test of Intelligence. Results showed that the degree of masculine identification predicted self-estimated intelligence scores. A large body of research has shown that self-appraisal of intellectual abilities and selfefficacy beliefs guide the selection of coursework in secondary and tertiary education and form an important component of career decision-making. This may explain to some degree gender-specific differences in certain fields of STEM. Collectively, the results of these studies are used to refine existing psychobiosocial models of sex differences in cognitive abilities, to explain both the differences between males and females but also within-sex variability. It suggests masculine and feminine sex-role identification is an important individual differences factor to consider, and that these shape intellectual self-image and self-efficacy beliefs.

Students’ spatial visualization ability is a key component in understanding geometry, yet many students exhibit suboptimal performance in this area. This study aimed to (1) evaluate the quality of the Geogebra-assisted 6E-IM learning model, (2) examine its effect on students' spatial visualization ability, and (3) describe students' ability levels after receiving the intervention. A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was used. The independent variable was the Geogebra-assisted 6E-IM model, while the dependent variable was students’ spatial visualization ability. A total of 60 students participated, with 30 assigned to the experimental group and 30 to the control group. Data were collected through tests, interviews, and questionnaires. Quantitative results showed that students in the experimental group significantly outperformed the control group (p < 0.05), indicating a positive effect of the Geogebra-assisted 6E-IM model on spatial visualization ability. Qualitative analysis revealed that students with high ability met all spatial visualization indicators; those with moderate ability met two indicators, while those with low ability met only one. These findings demonstrate that the integration of Geogebra in the 6E-IM learning model can effectively enhance students’ spatial visualization skills in geometry. This study contributes to the development of innovative, technology-integrated instructional strategies in mathematics education.

This study investigated prospective social studies teachers’ spatial abilities. It was conducted with 234 prospective teachers attending Social Studies Teaching departments at Education Faculties of two universities in Central and Southern Anatolia. This study, designed according to the explanatory-sequential design, is a mixed research method, involving two stages. The first stage was conducted in the causal-comparative research design. The data were collected using “Mental Rotation Test” and “Surface Development Test”. Descriptive statistics, MANOVA and ANOVA were used to analyze the data. The second stage was designed as a case study. “Opinion Form for Spatial Ability Tests” was used to elicit the views of 37 prospective teachers (F:20, M:17) identified via the purposive sampling method. The qualitative data obtained were analyzed using the content analysis technique. The study results showed that spatial visualization and mental rotation abilities of the prospective teachers were low; male prospective teachers were betterqualified than female ones in mental rotation but spatial visualization ability did not vary by gender. Moreover, prospective teachers with higher academic averages had better spatial abilities. Integrating virtual environment applications such as Google Earth etc. into social studies courses and using them in these courses can help to improve prospective teachers’ spatial abilities.

Brain organization theory posits a cascade of physiological and behavioral changes initiated and shaped by prenatal hormones. Recently, this theory has been associated with outcomes including gendered toy preference, 2D/4D digit ratio, personality characteristics, sexual orientation, and cognitive profile (spatial, verbal, and mathematical abilities). We examine the evidence for this claim, focusing on 2D/4D and its putative role as a biomarker for organizational features that influence cognitive abilities/interests predisposing males toward mathematically and spatially intensive careers. Although massive support exists for early brain organization theory overall, there are myriad inconsistencies, alternative explanations, and outright contradictions that must be addressed while still taking the entire theory into account. Like a fractal within the larger theory, the 2D/4D hypothesis mirrors this overall support on a smaller scale while likewise suffering from inconsistencies (positive, negative, and sex-dependent correlations), alternative explanations (2D/4D related to spatial preferences rather than abilities per se), and contradictions (feminine 2D/4D in men associated with higher spatial ability). Using the debate over brain organization theory as the theoretical stage, we focus on 2D/4D evidence as an increasingly important player on this stage, a demonstrative case in point of the evidential complexities of the broader debate, and an increasingly important topic in its own right.

Spatial ability is discussed in terms of psychometric factors and information processing research. Reanalysis of major psychometric studies suggests two major spatial factors — spatial relations and spatial visualization ability. Apparent differences between these factors in speed versus power and cognitive complexity are verified by process analyses of individual differences in spatial relations and visualization ability. Information processing studies suggest multiple sources of individual differences such as process execution speed, quality and capacity of representation, process coordination and strategies for problem solution. Consideration is also given to additional issues for research as well as implications for testing.

In the past two decades researchers have shown considerable interest in the relationship between the sex and the mathematics achievement of children in the upper grades of elementary school. Some researchers have examined sex differences by comparing total test scores (Backman, 1972; Benbow & Stanley, 1980, 1983; Maccoby & Jacklin, 1974), whereas others have focused on the proportion of students who answered a particular item correctly (Armstrong, 1980; Fennema, 1978; Raphael, Wahlstrom, & McLean, 1984). In a recent study by Marshall (1983) the analysis is based on a comparison of the kinds of errors made by male and female students. Some of the studies done to date purport to have established that by age 13 there is a significant difference in mathematical ability between the sexes and that it is especially pronounced among high-scoring exceptionally gifted students, with boys outnumbering girls 13 to 1 (Benbow & Stanley, 1983), whereas others have argued the opposite: that very little difference exists, if any, and that when a difference is detected it favors boys only slightly (Fennema & Carpenter, 1981). According to Schildkamp-Kiindiger (1982), reporting on research carried out in nine countries, sex-related differences in achievement have been found to vary considerably both within and among countries.

The present study explored the problem-solving strategies of high- and low-spatial visualization ability learners on a novel spatial anatomy task to determine whether differences in strategies contribute to differences in task performance. The results of this study provide further insights into the processing commonalities and differences among learners beyond the classification of spatial visualization ability alone, and help elucidate what, if anything, high- and low-spatial visualization ability learners do differently while solving spatial anatomy task problems. Forty-two students completed a standardized measure of spatial visualization ability, a novel spatial anatomy task, and a questionnaire involving personal self-analysis of the processes and strategies used while performing the spatial anatomy task. Strategy reports revealed that there were different ways students approached answering the spatial anatomy task problems. However, chi-square test analyses established that differences in problem-solving strategies did not contribute to differences in task performance. Therefore, underlying spatial visualization ability is the main source of variation in spatial anatomy task performance, irrespective of strategy. In addition to scoring higher and spending less time on the anatomy task, participants with high spatial visualization ability were also more accurate when solving the task problems.

In three experiments we tested the effects of spatial visualization ability on performance of a motion-verification task, in which subjects were shown a diagram of a mechanical system and were asked to verify a sentence stating the motion of one of the system components. We propose that this task involves component processes of (1) sentence comprehension, (2) diagram comprehension, (3) text-diagram integration, and (4) mental animation. Subjects with low spatial ability made more errors than did subjects with high spatial ability on this task, and they made more errors on items in which more system components had to be animated to solve the problem. In contrast, the high-spatial subjects were relatively accurate on all trials. These results indicate that spatial visualization is correlated with accuracy on the motion-verification task and suggest that this correlation is primarily due to the mental animation component of the task. Reaction time and eye-fixation data revealed no differences in how the high- and low-spatial subjects decomposed the task. The data of the two groups of subjects were equally consistent with a piecemeal model of mental animation, in which components are animated one by one in order of the causal chain of events in the system.

This research investigated the predictive relationship between Creative self-efficacy and Spatial visualization ability among gifted high school students in Saudi Arabia, in light of the knowledge transformation required to achieve the Kingdom's Vision 2030. The study utilized Bandura's social-cognitive theory framework to address a notable gap in Arabic literature regarding the interplay between cognitive experience and affective belief. The study used a descriptive correlational approach, applying the Revised PSVT:R and the Creative Self-Efficacy Scale to a sample of gifted high school students. The descriptive results showed that the sample had very high levels of both creative self-efficacy and spatial visualization ability, confirming the superior affective and cognitive characteristics of this group. The results of the correlation analysis showed a positive and statistically significant correlation between creative self-efficacy and spatial visualization ability. (r = 0.48, p < 0.001). More importantly, linear regression analysis revealed that spatial visualization ability statistically significantly predicts creative self-efficacy (B= 0.49, p < 0.001), with spatial visualization explaining approximately 23% of the variance in creative self-efficacy among gifted students. The study concludes that cognitive superiority in spatial ability acts as a cognitive lever that enhances students' affective confidence in their ability to innovate, supporting the hypothesis of reciprocal interaction between creative self-efficacy and spatial visualization ability. The study recommends the integration of intensive and systematic spatial visualization training programs into gifted education curricula, not only to improve technical skills, but also to enhance their creative self-efficacy and support the development of creative human capital to achieve national development goals.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of an instruction using geologic planar figures on high school students` ability of spatial visualization and geologic spatial ability and also to explore its applicability as an instructional strategy through the investigation of students` perception about the instruction using mixed methodology. For this purpose, we developed 10 planar figures of geologic structures (2 horizontal layers, 2 vertical layers, 4 angular layers, 1 fault, and 1 fold), and tested students` spatial visualization ability and geologic spatial ability before and after the implementation in class. In addition, in order to investigate students` perception on the instruction, we conducted quantitative research using questionnaires comprised of the cognitive and the affective domain, and followed by focus group interview that was conducted to obtain deeper understanding of their perception. Findings revealed that the instruction using geologic planar figures was effective to enhance spatial visualization ability and geologic spatial ability. It was also helpful for students to enhance their ability to perceive the spatial configuration of the geologic structures as well as the ability to penetrate visually into the images of the structures. The results of the students` perception on the instruction showed that the students recognized the instruction using geologic planar figures as a strongly positive teaching method both in the cognitive and affective domain. We concluded that geologic planar figures could be used as an effective tool for the lesson of `mapping and interpreting of geological map`, and be highly applicable for the advanced class in high schools.

Spatial thinking skills, which encompass the ability to mentally perceive, manipulate, and find meaning in spatial information, are essential to student success across science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, including meteorology. Atmospheric data are inherently spatial, with meteorology coursework requiring students to comprehend, interpret, and predict meteorological data across spatial scales. Spatial skills are known to improve over time in response to instruction, but the rate and nature of that progression in meteorology students as they move through the curriculum have yet to be characterized. In this study, the Spatial Thinking Abilities Test (STAT) was used to quantify spatial thinking skills in undergraduate students in 10 courses required for the meteorology major at a single institution. The STAT was administered twice a semester over a three-semester period at the start and end of each course. Gains in spatial reasoning skills were typically modest for a single semester, though overall levels of spatial skills were sensitive to declared major; meteorology and STEM majors scored significantly higher than nonmeteorology and non-STEM majors. Additionally, meteorology majors regularly exhibited improved performance on questions evaluating the skill of disembedding, which is particularly important for interpreting meteorological maps. Even so, disembedding was the weakest spatial thinking skill for all cohorts of meteorology majors. Longitudinal analysis of meteorology majors revealed that novice students progressed the least in their spatial skills, while students in the middle of curriculum exhibited the strongest gains, likely tied to an increased number of required meteorology courses and their specific content.

Sex differences in mathematical achievement and spatial visualization skill were examined in a sample of 724 Norwegian sixth-grade students. Boys had significantly higher mean mathematics scores than girls. Significant sex differences favouring boys were found in the subsamples of most difficult tasks, but not in the subsamples of easiest tasks. No significant sex difference in spatial visualization was found. The hypothesis that boys' superior achievement in mathematics is due to a superior ability in spatial visualization was not supported. Although the effect of spatial visualization on mathematical achievement increased significantly up to a certain level of mathematics task difficulty, the hypothesis that the effect of spatial visualization on mathematical achievement increases with increasing task difficulty was not fully supported. With increasing mathematics task difficulty, it is hypothesized that boys, more than girls, will benefit from spatial visualization. This hypothesis was not supported by the present elementary school data.
