Graphical displays were used early in geophysics and crystallography, mineralogy, petrology and structural geology by the early 1800s, but nineteenth-century geology obstinately remained mainly descriptive. Charles Lyell’s quantitative classification of the Tertiary Sub-Era in 1828 was a notable exception. Nevertheless, by 1920 the quantitative approach had become established. W. C. Krumbein, who introduced the computer into geology in 1958, encouraged use of probabilistic sampling and process-response models. Early work focused on databases, statistical data analysis and display. By the 1970s, stochastic simulation, deterministic modelling and spatial ‘geostatistics’ (pioneered by Matheron and his co-workers), were of growing importance. The introduction of the personal computer and the graphical user interface in the 1980s brought well-proven quantitative methods out of the research environment onto the workbench and into the field. Since the mid-1980s, the analysis, display and modelling of behaviour in three dimensions, underpinned by spatial statistics, computational fluid-flow, visualization technology, etc., has proved of economic benefit to mining, petroleum geology and hydrogeology. Other, computationally intensive, methods likely to be of importance in the Earth sciences are the application of ‘robust’ statistical methods, increasing use of Bayesian methods in uncertainty (risk) estimation (as a result of a renewed interest in statistical intervals and forecasting), and computational mineralogy.

AGU is deeply committed to fostering the next generation of Earth and space scientists. Union activities contribute to this effort in many ways, one of which is partnering with the National Earth Science Teacher's Association (NESTA) to hold the Annual Geophysical Information for Teachers (GIFT) workshop at AGU's annual Fall Meeting. GIFT allows K‐12 science teachers to hear about the latest geoscience research from the scientists making the discoveries, explore new classroom resources for their students, and visit exhibits and technical sessions of the AGU meeting for free. In 2011 AGU worked with NESTA to develop an improved rigorous and open application process for scientists and education professionals who wished to work as a team and present their Earth and space science work to teachers, as well as lead the educators in a hands‐on, classroom‐ ready activity. Twenty‐four applications were received for five slots, so the selected presentations (on tsunamis, clouds, field campaigns, glaciers, and volcanoes), chosen through a peer‐ review process, truly represented the best ways of getting cutting‐edge science into the classroom.

Today, earth sciences engineering education programs face with serious problems. It is often not possible to provide experience on different geographical environments or materials. Considering these problems of earth science related engineering education programs, virtual reality environment potentially can provide technology enhanced training alternatives. However, in the literature there are not many studies showing how virtual reality can enhance the earth science related engineering education programs. Accordingly, the aim of this mapping of the literature and systematic review study is to explore studies dealing with virtual reality in the earth sciences engineering education programs. Through a rigorous screening process, the first search in the Scopus database provided 150 studies, where 19 of them were selected in the course of this study and the mapping of the literature report was drawn with all these articles. Additionally, with seven of these articles a systematic review is conducted. The mapping of the literature report shows that studies on this topic have increased in recent years and have been published in a variety of journals. The number of China and USA origins studies are remarkable among the examined studies, which are predominantly in the fields of mining engineering and geological engineering. As a result of the in-depth analyses, the systematic review report indicates that virtual reality applications in the earth sciences engineering education positively contribute to the learning outcomes and experiences of students/trainees from different perspectives.

The article that required revision was sent to the author for revising as suggested by the reviewer. The revised version was re-uploaded by the author and rechecked by the editor and subject to a plagiarism check and a language and proofreading check. We are delighted to announce that Ecology has implemented a totally web-based system for manuscript submission. Authors no longer need to send hard copies or e-mail attachments to the Publications Office or the Editor-in-Chief in order to have their work considered for publication. Manuscripts may now be sent to the journal over the Internet in the original digital format (e.g., Word, WordPerfect, or LaTex), and there are several format options for figures, including JPEG, TIFF, and Excel. The new system will convert the files into a merged PDF for editors and reviewers. Please check 〈http://esapubs.org/esapubs〉 for current instructions before submitting new manuscripts. Peer review will be conducted via the same integrated system, with password-protected confidentiality for reviewers. Our hope is that the entire submission and review process will be expedited. We are confident that there will be significant savings in terms of postage and paper costs, both for ESA and for authors. Another benefit of the new system is that corresponding authors may check the status of their manuscripts on-line at any time. The look of Ecology has evolved over the past few years, and it is not just the covers of the print versions that have changed. Published papers are shorter than in previous years. Most notably, nearly every issue now contains several Reports. These are papers that the editors and reviewers have recommended as both timely and important. The research findings in Reports should be of interest to all ecologists, and their concise format and prominent position in the journal are intended to promote a wide readership. We encourage authors to make every effort to trim submitted manuscripts to a length suitable for this section (20 typescript pages, maximum). (Manuscripts of similar length but on more specialized topics are published as Notes.) Authors can often achieve more concise manuscripts by shortening and focusing the Introduction and Discussion, and by reducing the numbers of figures, tables, and citations. We especially encourage the judicious use of Ecological Archives for publication of digital appendices and supplements (e.g., for methodological detail, full tables of statistical results, etc.). Excessive length may cause delays at every stage of the review and publication process. Longer manuscripts demand more time for evaluation by editors and reviewers and very often must go through extra rounds of time-consuming revision. On the other hand, we strive to expedite the processing of papers that are submitted as Reports. First, reviewers and editors are encouraged to complete their evaluations more quickly. Once accepted for publication, Reports are moved ahead in the copy-editing queue. Finally, Reports are often pushed ahead to the next available issue upon receipt of corrected proofs. We are also striving for a new level of concision in regular articles and in Concepts and Synthesis papers. Submissions longer than 30 typescript pages must now be accompanied by a cover letter that explains and justifies the length. The new policies are intended to raise the interest of readers, increase the number and disciplinary breadth of papers we can publish, and speed the rate of publication.

The present volume of the IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Sciences participates in the 1st 2022 International Conference on Sustainable Environment, Development, and Energy (CONSER 2022) to be held in Sanur, Denpasar City, Bali, Indonesia on December 5 - 6, 2022. The conference with the theme of “Energy and Sustainable Environment” was organized by the Institut Teknologi Nasional Yogyakarta (ITNY), Indonesia and in cooperation with Naresuan University, Thailand and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Perak Branch, Malaysia as co-organizers.The CONSER 2022 is the first series of conferences that brings together researchers from all over the world to present and discuss the latest research, contribute to sustainable environment, technology and sustainable development and energy resources, and encourage more research cooperation. The will of the authorities, together with the important role of scientists in creating various opportunities is to strengthen the research culture and downstream research outputs, ultimately solving problems in industry and society.The conference technical program includes five keynote speakers, invited speakers, oral, and poster presentations. Session tracks included Urban Studies and Sustainable Environment, Climate Change and Geosciences, Technology and Development, Material Science and Energy. The conference was attended by over 100 scientists and engineers from 20 countries with diverse backgrounds from academia, government, and industry in Asia, Africa, Europe and America. Oral presentations in hybrid format (offline and online) include 84 full papers, 15 abstracts, and 9 posters. All papers presented formed the core of the conference, focusing on the conference theme and providing many opportunities for discussion, ultimately leading to a sustainable environment and energy. Distinguished plenary speakers from five leading experts presented their outstanding research achievements in various areas of Environment and Sustainable Energy. This public lecture was held on the morning of the first day after the opening ceremony. Presentations cover a wide range of conference topics, from disaster management to new materials for energy. The keynote speeches and progress reports on their research build bridges between different subject areas in energy, climate change, economics, and urban development, and provide insight into new areas for non-experts. In addition to the main conference, awards have been given for the best paper, best presenter, and best poster.Papers for this conference have been selected following a rigorous peer review process. All papers were all reviewed by international and national peer reviewers, and a minimum of three reviewers were required to review each full paper. On this occasion, we would like to thank the organizing committee, authors, reviewers, and volunteers for their professionalism, and for always working hard to make the conference a success. Contributions and presentations also make this event a very exciting forum, adding value to learning, discussion and exchange of ideas, and to all speakers and authors meeting and interacting with old and new people from different countries. We show an incompletely specified function of n(n ; 1) variables that requires at most n products in an MSOP, while 2 n;1 products are required by minimizing the component functions separately. We introduce a new class of logic functions, called orthodox functions, where the application of the law of distributivity to MSOPs for component functions of f always produces an MSOP for f . Recently, the editorial board of Medical Physics approved a new feature of the journal entitled Medical Physics Letters. This new feature permits rapid publication of short articles of overriding importance to research or clinical practice in medical physics. Preliminary studies that are scientifically sound and that yield important results are good candidates for Medical Physics Letters. A Letter is a succinct research paper; it is not a letter to the editor, which in Medical Physics is termed Correspondence. Medical Physics Letters should not exceed three (3) journal pages, and must be written clearly and in good English. They are reviewed in a few days with a recommendation of (1) Accept as is; (2) Accept with minor revisions; or (3) Reject. Only one revision is permitted for Letters that are accepted with minor revisions. Medical Physics Letters are archived and citable. Publication of a Medical Physics Letter does not preclude publication of a research article on the topic at a later time. The journal's editorial board believes that many medical physicists are engaged in research that could yield Medical Physics Letters. These physicists are encouraged to submit Medical Physics Letters as a way to gain early recognition of the significance of their research. A few potential authors of Medical Physics papers have expressed interest in submitting multimedia files as part of their manuscripts. These authors believe that the files are essential to the presentation and understanding of the science in the manuscripts. Multimedia files can accompany a manuscript submitted to Medical Physics, and will be examined as part of the review process for the manuscript. Multimedia files that can be submitted with a manuscript include QuickTime Non-Streaming, MPEG, or DV files. If the manuscript is published, the files will be archived with the manuscript in their original format. However, the archiving process places certain limitations on the types of files that can be submitted, as explained below. Digital video files can be submitted with Medical Physics articles and will be reviewed along with the articles. Acceptable file formats include QuickTime Non-Streaming (.qt or .mov), MPEG (.mpg), and DV (.dv). The preferred formats are .mov and .mpeg. Video files should be named [filename.xxx]. When saving a video file, authors should use the “Save As…” option and select .qt, .mov, .mpg, or .dv as the file type. If a digital video file is submitted, a representative “still” image from the file should be selected as a placeholder for the video file in PDFs and print. The extracted image should have reasonable clarity of fine lines and details. Acceptable file formats for still images are PS (.ps), EPS (.eps), and TIFF (.tif). Still images should be named [filename.xxx]. Supplemental video files can be submitted as AVI files, but these cannot be archived with an article since the compression algorithms used to create AVI files are proprietary and do not meet the archival policies and procedures of the American Institute of Physics (the publisher of Medical Physics). AVI files can be retained on-line for an indefinite period. Audio files may also be submitted to Medical Physics, and will be reviewed along with the article that they accompany. Acceptable file formats are PCM (.pcm), WAV (.wav), AIFF (.aif), and MP3 (.mp3) at 128 Kbs or greater. Audio files should be named [filename.xxx]. The acceptable file formats described above are playable with standard media players such as QuickTime and Windows Media Player. A media player should be used to check file properties and image/sound quality prior to submission. For video submissions, fonts, lines, and image details should be of sufficient size and weight to be visible when played at half size. File size should be limited to make download times reasonable since streaming formats are not acceptable at this time. A recommended size is 3–5 Mb for each multimedia file. Authors should use an acceptable compression codecs (compression-decompression algorithm) to reduce file sizes. Animation must be formatted into a standard video file. The nature of the media content, such as video or audio. The media file type, such as QuickTime, DV, MPEG, WAV, etc. The duration of the media object playing time (seconds) for video and audio. For video, the size of the video image (height width in pixels). The name and version of the software used to create the media object, such as ADOBE PREMIERE ELEMENTS v. 2.0.

ABSTRACTEducators seek to develop 21st century skills in the classroom by incorporating educational materials other than textbooks into their lessons, such as digitally available activities, videos, and visualizations. A problem that educators face is that no review process similar to the formal adoption processes used for K–12 textbooks or the college-textbook review process exists for these types of online educational resources. However, educators need authoritative high-quality digital teaching materials. The scientific journal peer-review system offers a well-established model to adapt to the requirements of a peer review of educational materials. In this paper, we review ten review processes developed to evaluate digital geoscience educational resources and focus in detail on a rigorous iterative peer-review process recently developed by the Climate Literacy and Energy Awareness Network (CLEAN) project. This process builds upon existing efforts and emphasizes the “curation” of a digital collection that addresses the Essential Principles of Climate Literacy and the Energy Literacy Principles. Providing educators with thoroughly reviewed educational materials is especially important for fast changing, societally important, and sensitive areas such as climate and energy science.

يهدف البحث إلى تحديد مهارات الحاسب الآلي اللازمة لنزلاء المؤسسة العقابية والإصلاحية بدولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة. ولتحقيق ذلك اعتمد الباحث على ثلاثة مصادر رئيسية، تمثلت المصادر الأولى في الدراسات والأبحاث السابقة ذات الصلة، حيث تم تحليل العديد من الدراسات العربية والأجنبية، واستخراج أهم المهارات الواردة بها مع التركيز على الدراسات المتعلقة بفئة النزلاء. أما المصدر الثاني فكان من خلال استطلاع آراء الخبراء، والمتخصصين في مجال الحاسب الآلي من خلال مقابلات معمقة شملت أسئلة مفتوحة ومغلقة. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، تم إجراء تحليل محتوى للعديد من الكتب والمراجع في مجال الحاسب الآلي لاستخلاص المهارات الواردة بها كمصدر ثالث. وقد تم تكوين قائمة أولية مكونة من 20 مهارة بناءً على نتائج المصادر الثلاثة، ثم عرضها على لجنة من الخبراء لمراجعتها وإجراء التعديلات اللازمة من حيث حذف وإضافة ودمج بعض المهارات، والتوصل إلى القائمة النهائية التي تضمنت 12 مهارة أساسية تفرع منها 125 مهارة فرعية، وتم اعتمادها، لتمثل أهم مهارات الحاسب الآلي اللازمة لنزلاء المؤسسات العقابية والإصلاحية في دولة الإمارات. The primary objective of this research is to ascertain the essential computer skills required by inmates within the penal and correctional institutions in the United Arab Emirates. To accomplish this goal, the researcher employed a tripartite methodology, drawing upon three primary sources. The initial source involved a comprehensive review of pertinent prior studies and research endeavors, encompassing both Arab and English literature. A meticulous analysis of these studies enabled the extraction of crucial skills, with particular emphasis on those relevant to the incarcerated population.The second source of data collection involved a survey conducted among experts and specialists in the field of computers. In-depth interviews were employed, featuring a combination of open-ended and closed questions to garner insights from these knowledgeable individuals. Concurrently, a third source was utilized, encompassing content analysis of various books and references within the computer science domain. This rigorous process was undertaken to identify and extract pertinent computer skills. Subsequent to synthesizing information from these three sources, an initial list comprising 20 skills was formulated. This list underwent scrutiny by a committee of experts, who engaged in a thorough review process. Amendments were made, including the deletion, addition, and merging of certain skills. The final iteration of the list comprised 12 fundamental computer skills, which further branched into 125 sub-skills. This meticulously crafted and validated list represents the paramount computer skills deemed essential for inmates of penal and correctional institutions in the UAE.

There is another, equally important, reason to improve science and engineering education: to increase citizens’ fundamental understanding of science and engineering so that they are better able to understand public policies related to science, including medical and environmental issues. These pressures have led to the evaluation of how we teach and learn science. Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are the result of these discussions. A “standard” is what a student should know (content) and be able to do (skills). When many people hear the word “standards,” they think about Common Core. The usual focus in Common Core is on Language Arts and Mathematics, but there is a science component to both of those. Scientific literacy is important...
