Hopf bifurcation of a chemostat model
In this paper, the dynamics of a spruce-budworm model with delay is investigated. We show that there exists Hopf bifurcation at the positive equilibrium as the delay increases. Some sufficient conditions for the existence of Hopf bifurcation are obtained by investigating the associated characteristic equation. By using the theory of normal form and center manifold, explicit expression for determining the direction of Hopf bifurcations and the stability of bifurcating periodic solutions are presented.

Stability analysis in a diffusional immunosuppressive infection model with delayed antiviral immune response
In this paper, the diffusion is introduced to an immunosuppressive infection model with delayed antiviral immune response. The direction and stability of Hopf bifurcation are effected by time delay, in the absence of which the positive equilibrium is locally asymptotically stable by means of analyzing eigenvalue spectrum; however, when the time delay increases beyond a threshold, the positive equilibrium loses its stability via the Hopf bifurcation. The stability and direction of the Hopf bifurcation is investigated with the norm form and the center manifold theory. The stability of the Hopf bifurcation leads to the emergence of spatial spiral patterns. Numerical calculations are performed to illustrate our theoretical results. Read moreHopf Bifurcation Analysis of a Two-Delay HIV-1 Virus Model with Delay-Dependent Parameters
In this paper, a two-delay HIV-1 virus model with delay-dependent parameters is considered. The model includes both virus-to-cell and cell-to-cell transmissions. Firstly, immune-inactivated reproduction rate R 0 and immune-activated reproduction rate R 1 are deduced. When R 1 > 1 , the system has the unique positive equilibrium E ∗ . The local stability of the positive equilibrium and the existence of Hopf bifurcation are obtained by analyzing the characteristic equation at the positive equilibrium with the time delay as the bifurcation parameter and four different cases. Besides, we obtain the direction and stability of the Hopf bifurcation by using the center manifold theorem and the normal form theory. Finally, the theoretical results are validated by numerical simulation.

A delayed computer virus model with nonlinear incidence rate
An Susceptible-Vaccinated-Exposed-Infectious-Recovered computer virus model with nonlinear incidence rate and two delays is proposed and its Hopf bifurcation is investigated. The existence of Hopf bifurcation at the viral equilibrium is established by analyzing its distribution of characteristic values. Moreover, the stability and the direction of the Hopf bifurcation are obtained by using the normal form theory and centre manifold theory. Finally, a numerical simulation is performed to validate the theoretical results obtained in the paper.
Read moreOscillations Induced by Quiescent Adult Female in a Reaction–Diffusion Model of Wild Aedes Aegypti Mosquitoes
This paper takes the reaction–diffusion approach to deal with the quiescent females phase, so as to describe the dynamics of invasion of aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which are divided into three subpopulations: eggs, pupae and female. We mainly investigate whether the time of quiescence (delay) in the females phase can induce Hopf bifurcation. By means of analyzing the eigenvalue spectrum, we show that the persistent positive equilibrium is asymptotically stable in the absence of time delay, but loses its stability via Hopf bifurcation when time delay crosses some critical value. Using normal form and center manifold theory, we investigate the stability of the bifurcating branches of periodic solutions and the direction of the Hopf bifurcation. Numerical simulations are carried out to support our theoretical results.
Read moreBifurcation analysis in a diffusive predator\u2013prey system with Michaelis\u2013Menten-type predator harvesting
In this paper, we consider a modified predator–prey model with Michaelis–Menten-type predator harvesting and diffusion term. We give sufficient conditions to ensure that the coexisting equilibrium is asymptotically stable by analyzing the distribution of characteristic roots. We also study the Turing instability of the coexisting equilibrium. In addition, we use the natural growth rate r_{1} of the prey as a parameter and carry on Hopf bifurcation analysis including the existence of Hopf bifurcation, bifurcation direction, and the stability of the bifurcating periodic solution by the theory of normal form and center manifold method. Our results suggest that the diffusion term is important for the study of the predator–prey model, since it can induce Turing instability and spatially inhomogeneous periodic solutions. The natural growth rate r_{1} of the prey can also affect the stability of positive equilibrium and induce Hopf bifurcation.
Read moreHopf bifurcation and Turing instability in a diffusive predator-prey model with hunting cooperation
In this article, we study Hopf bifurcation and Turing instability of a diffusive predator-prey model with hunting cooperation. For the local model, we analyze the stability of the equilibrium and derive conditions for determining the direction of Hopf bifurcation and the stability of the bifurcating periodic solution by the center manifold and the normal form theory. For the reaction-diffusion model, first it is shown that Turing instability occurs, then the direction and stability of the Hopf bifurcation is reached. Our results show that hunting cooperation plays a crucial role in the dynamics of the model, that is, it can be beneficial to the predator population and induce the rise of Turing instability. Finally, numerical simulations are performed to visualize the complex dynamic behavior.
Read moreOscillatory Dynamics Induced by Time Delays in the Quorum Sensing System of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa
In this work, a sufficiently simple quorum sensing model allows one to perform detailed analytic studies to gain insights into the dynamical mechanisms in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It is shown that an optimal rate of model parameters is essential to induce oscillations without considering time delays. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulation reveal that the delays can induce subcritical Hopf bifurcation and oscillation hysteresis. By using the center manifold and normal form theory, the explicit formulas for determining the stability and direction of periodic solutions bifurcating from Hopf bifurcations are derived. Numerical results show that the global periodic solutions bifurcating from the equilibrium exist when the delay is faraway from the first critical value. Moreover, the length of the delay can determine the amplitudes and the periods of the oscillations. A two-parameter diagram of delays is given to illustrate their crucial roles in coordinating and regulating oscillatory dynamics of the system. These results may help to further understand the dynamics of quorum sensing system in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and provide beneficial guidelines in the process of bacterial delivery of drugs.
Read moreDynamics of a malaria infection model with time delay.
In this paper, a new mathematical model (a system of delay differential equation) is proposed to describe dynamical behaviors of malaria in an infected host with red blood cells (RBCs), infected red blood cells (iRBCs) and immune factors. The basic reproduction number R0 of the malaria infection is derived. If R0≤1, the uninfected equilibrium E0 is globally asymptotically stable. If R0>1, there exists two kinds of infection equilibria. The conditions of these equilibria with respect to the existence, stability and uniform persistence are given. Furthermore, fluctuations occur when the model undergoes Hopf bifurcation, and periodic solution appears near the positive equilibrium. The direction and stability of Hopf bifurcation are also obtained by applying the center manifold method and the normal form theory. Numerical simulations are provided to demonstrate the theoretical results.

Stability and Hopf bifurcation of a delayed ratio-dependent predator-prey system
Since the ratio-dependent theory reflects the fact that predators must share and compete for food, it is suitable for describing the relationship between predators and their preys and has recently become a very important theory put forward by biologists. In order to investigate the dynamical relationship between predators and their preys, a so-called Michaelis-Menten ratio-dependent predator-prey model is studied in this paper with gestation time delays of predators and preys taken into consideration. The stability of the positive equilibrium is investigated by the Nyquist criteria, and the existence of the local Hopf bifurcation is analyzed by employing the theory of Hopf bifurcation. By means of the center manifold and the normal form theories, explicit formulae are derived to determine the stability, direction and other properties of bifurcating periodic solutions. The above theoretical results are validated by numerical simulations with the help of dynamical software WinPP. The results show that if both the gestation delays are small enough, their sizes will keep stable in the long run, but if the gestation delays of predators are big enough, their sizes will periodically fluctuate in the long term. In order to reveal the effects of time delays on the ratio-dependent predator-prey model, a ratio-dependent predator-prey model without time delays is considered. By Hurwitz criteria, the local stability of positive equilibrium of this model is investigated. The conditions under which the positive equilibrium is locally asymptotically stable are obtained. By comparing the results with those of the model with time delays, it shows that the dynamical behaviors of ratio-dependent predator-prey model with time delays are more complicated. Under the same conditions, namely, with the same parameters, the stability of positive equilibrium of ratio-dependent predator-prey model would change due to the introduction of gestation time delays for predators and preys. Moreover, with the variation of time delays, the positive equilibrium of the ratio-dependent predator-prey model subjects to Hopf bifurcation.
Read moreHybrid control of Hopf bifurcation in a Lotka-Volterra predator-prey model with two delays
In this paper, the Hopf bifurcation control for a Lotka-Volterra predator-prey model with two delays is studied by using a hybrid control strategy. By analyzing the associated characteristic equation, its local stability and the existence of Hopf bifurcation with respect to both delays are established. In addition, the onset of an inherent bifurcation is delayed. Based on the normal form theory and the center manifold theorem, explicit formulas are derived to determine the direction of Hopf bifurcation and stability of the bifurcating periodic solution. Numerical simulation results confirm that the hybrid controller is efficient in controlling Hopf bifurcation.
Read moreTuring–Hopf Bifurcation Analysis for a Diffusive Prey–Predator Model with a Chemotactic Term
Classical reaction–diffusion systems exhibit diverse dynamical behaviors, which become more complex particularly in the context of bifurcation analysis and normal form theory when chemotactic terms are incorporated. This paper investigates the stability of a positive constant equilibrium and the Turing–Hopf (TH) bifurcation in a diffusive predator–prey model with searching, handling predators, and chemotaxis. A computational method is developed for deriving the normal form of the TH bifurcation on the center manifold in general three-dimensional chemotactic reaction–diffusion systems with Neumann boundary conditions. The method enables an explicit dynamical classification near the bifurcation point. Combined theoretical and numerical analyses reveal that TH interactions significantly enrich spatiotemporal dynamics.
Read moreOscillatory behavior of p53-Mdm2 system driven by transcriptional and translational time delays
Biological experiments clarify that p53-Mdm2 module is the core of tumor network and p53 oscillation plays an important role in determining the tumor cell fate. In this paper, we investigate the effect of time delay on the oscillatory behavior induced by Hopf bifurcation in p53-Mdm2 system. First, the stability of the unique positive equilibrium point and the existence of Hopf bifurcation are investigated by using the time delay as the bifurcation parameter and by applying the bifurcation theory. Second, the explicit criteria determining the direction of Hopf bifurcation and the stability of bifurcating periodic solutions are developed based on the normal form theory and the center manifold theorem. In addition, the combination of numerical simulation results and theoretical calculation results indicates that time delays in p53-Mdm2 system are critical for p53 oscillations. The results may help us to better understand the biological functions of p53 pathway and provide clues for treatment of cancer.
