Abstract

Stems have become an essential feature of revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) components and serve several valuable functions (1, 2). Stems distribute load away from the femoral condyles and tibial plateau (3), thereby protecting damaged bone in these areas from mechanical overload and failure and also thereby reducing the forces on critical implant interfaces in these locations (4). Stems allow the surgeon to bypass bone defects of the distal femur and proximal tibia, thereby reducing the risk of catastrophic bone collapse or periprosthetic fracture. Stems often help the surgeon optimize implant alignment and the mechanical axis of the limb. And finally, stems can provide an expanded interface for cemented or uncemented implant fixation to bone.
