Generalized quasi-cyclic codes over Galois rings: structural properties and enumeration
For R a Galois ring and m 1, . . . , m l positive integers, a generalized quasi-cyclic (GQC) code over R of block lengths (m 1, m 2, . . . , m l ) and length $${\sum_{i=1}^lm_i}$$ is an R[x]-submodule of $${R[x]/(x^{m_1}-1)\times\cdots \times R[x]/(x^{m_l}-1)}$$. Suppose m 1, . . . , m l are all coprime to the characteristic of R and let {g 1, . . . , g t } be the set of all monic basic irreducible polynomials in the factorizations of $${x^{m_i}-1}$$ (1 ≤ i ≤ l). Then the GQC codes over R of block lengths (m 1, m 2, . . . , m l ) and length $${\sum_{i=1}^lm_i}$$ are identified with $${{\mathcal G}_1\times\cdots\times {\mathcal G}_t}$$, where $${{\mathcal G}_j}$$ is an R[x]/(g j )-submodule of $${(R[x]/(g_j))^{n_j}}$$, where n j is the number of i for which g j appears in the factorization of $${x^{m_i}-1}$$ into monic basic irreducible polynomials. This identification then leads to an enumeration of such GQC codes. An analogous result is also obtained for the 1-generator GQC codes. A notion of a parity-check polynomial is given when R is a finite field, and the number of GQC codes with a given parity-check polynomial is determined. Finally, an algorithm is given to compute the number of GQC codes of given block lengths.

Generalized quasi-cyclic (GQC) codes form a wide and useful class of linear codes that includes thoroughly quasi-cyclic codes, finite geometry (FG) low density parity check (LDPC) codes, and Hermitian codes. Although it is known that the systematic encoding of GQC codes is equivalent to the division algorithm in the theory of Grobner basis of modules, there has been no algorithm that computes Grobner basis for all types of GQC codes. In this paper, we propose two algorithms to compute Grobner basis for GQC codes from their parity check matrices: echelon canonical form algorithm and transpose algorithm. Both algorithms require sufficiently small number of finite-field operations with the order of the third power of code-length. Each algorithm has its own characteristic; the first algorithm is composed of elementary methods, and the second algorithm is based on a novel formula and is faster than the first one for high-rate codes. Moreover, we show that a serial-in serial-out encoder architecture for FG LDPC codes is composed of linear feedback shift registers with the size of the linear order of code-length; to encode a binary codeword of length n, it takes less than 2n adder and 2n memory elements. Keywords: automorphism group, Buchberger's algorithm, division algorithm, circulant matrix, finite geometry low density parity check (LDPC) codes.

In this paper, we study no 4-cycle, high-rate LDPC codes based on finite geometries for use in data storage devices and prove that these codes cannot be classified as quasi-cyclic (QC) codes but should be considered as broader generalized quasi-cyclic (GQC) codes. Because of the GQC structure of such codes, they can be systematically encoded using Groebner bases and their encoder can be implemented using simple feedback-shift registers. In order to demonstrate the efficiency of the encoder, we show that the hardware complexity of the serial-in serial-out encoder architecture of these codes is of linear order O(n). To encode a binary codeword of length n, less than 2n adders and 3n memory elements are required. Furthermore, we evaluated the error performances of these codes with sum product algorithm (SPA) decoding over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. At a bit error rate (BER) of 10^-5, they perform 1-dB away from the Shannon limit after 10 decoding iterations.

An [$$n, k, d$$n,k,d] code is a binary linear code of block length $$n$$n, dimension $$k$$k and minimum Hamming distance $$d$$d. Since the minimum distance determines the error detection or correction capability, it is desired that $$d$$d is as large as possible for the given block length $$n$$n and dimension $$k$$k. One of the most fundamental problems in coding theory is to construct codes with best possible minimum distances. This problem is very difficult in both theory and practice. During the last decades, it has proved that the class of quasi-cyclic (QC) codes contain many such codes. In this paper, augmentation of binary QC codes is studied. A new augmentation algorithm is presented, and 10 new $$h$$h-generator QC codes that are better than previously known code have been constructed. Furthermore, Construction X has been applied to obtain another 18 new improved binary linear codes. With the standard construction techniques, a total of 124 new binary linear codes that improve the lower bound on the minimum distance have been obtained.

The replicate-and-mask (R&M) construction of finite-length spatially-coupled (SC) LDPC codes is proposed in this paper. The proposed R&M construction generalizes the conventional matrix unwrapping construction and contains it as a special case. The R&M construction of a class of algebraic spatially coupled (SC) quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes over arbitrary finite fields is demonstrated. The girth, rank, and time-varying periodicity of the proposed R&M SC QC LDPC codes are analyzed. The error rate performance of finite-length nonbinary algebraic SC QC LDPC codes is investigated with window decoding. Compared to the conventional unwrapping construction, it is found through numerical simulations that the R&M construction resulted in SC QC LDPC codes with better block error rate performance and lower error floors. With a flooding schedule decoder, it is shown that the proposed R&M algebraic SC QC LDPC codes have better error performance than the corresponding LDPC block codes and random SC codes. The R&M construction of irregular SC QC LDPC codes is demonstrated. It is shown that low-complexity regular puncturing schemes can be deployed on these codes to construct families of rate-compatible irregular SC QC LDPC codes with good performance.

For an odd prime p, we obtain algebraic structure of cyclic codes of length n over a finite commutative non-chain semi-local ring \(\mathfrak {R}=\mathbb {F}_{p}[u,v,w]/\langle u^{2}-u,v^{2}-1,w^2-1,uv-vu,vw-wv,wu-uw\rangle \). These codes of length n can be viewed as principal ideals of the quotient ring \(\mathfrak {R}[x]/\langle x^n-1\rangle \). Here, a Gray map is defined to obtain p-ary quasi-cyclic codes of length 8n with index 8 as \(\mathbb {F}_p\)-images of cyclic codes of length n over \(\mathfrak {R}\). Also, we present necessary and sufficient conditions for a cyclic code to be an LCD (linear complementary dual) code over \(\mathfrak {R}\). Moreover, it is shown that the Gray image of an LCD code of length n over \(\mathfrak {R}\) is an LCD code of length 8n over \(\mathbb {F}_{p}\). Finally, a few non-trivial examples are given in support of our derived results.KeywordsCyclic codeNon-chain ringSemi-local ringGray mapLCD code
Read more(3, L) quasi-cyclic LDPC codes: Simplified exhaustive search and designs
There exist lots of (3, L)-regular quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes constructed from finite fields, protographs, array codes, and computer search under some design rules. For a given code length and rate, how to select the best one from these codes is considerable. In this paper, we study (3, L)-regular QC LDPC codes from the perspective of graph isomorphism, and non-isomorphic (3, L)-regular QC LDPC codes are determined. By analyzing the cycle structures of the resulting non-isomorphic codes, an efficient algorithm for counting cycles is presented. Also proposed is a simplified exhaustive search of non-isomorphic (3, L)-regular QC LDPC codes free of cycles of length less than g 0 , where g 0 is the estimated optimal girth value for a given code length. Based on these two algorithms, we can easily construct a (3, L)-regular QC LDPC code with optimized cycle distribution for a given L and code length. Numerical results show that the constructed codes have better performance under the iterative decoding algorithms.

Linking Reversed and Dual Codes of Quasi-Cyclic Codes
It is known that quasi-cyclic (QC) codes over the finite field 𝔽q correspond to certain 𝔽q[x]-modules. A QC code C is specified by a generator polynomial matrix G whose rows generate C as an 𝔽q[x]-module. The reversed code of C, denoted by R, is the code obtained by reversing all codewords of C while the dual code of C is denoted by C⊥. We call C reversible, self-orthogonal, and self-dual if R = C, C⊥ ⊇ C, and C⊥ = C, respectively. In this study, for a given C, we find an explicit formula for a generator polynomial matrix of R. A necessary and sufficient condition for C to be reversible is derived from this formula. In addition, we reveal the relations among C, R, and C⊥. Specifically, we give conditions on G corresponding to C⊥ ⊇ R, C⊥ ⊆ R, and C = R = C⊥. As an application, we employ these theoretical results to the construction of QC codes with best parameters. Computer search is used to show that there exist various binary reversible self-orthogonal QC codes that achieve the upper bounds on the minimum distance of linear codes.

The short paper proposes a method for constructing regular quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes based on circulant permutation matrices via simple prime field operations. The main advantage is that regular QC LDPC codes with a variety of block lengths and rates can be easily constructed which have no cycles of length four or less. Simulation results show that within only a maximum of ten decoding iterations of sum-product algorithm(SPA) the constructed regular codes of high rates have no error floor down to the bit-error rate of $10^{-7}$.

DOI: 10.1049/cp:20061337 ISBN: 0 86341 644 6 Location: Hangzhou, China Conference date: 6-9 Nov. 2006 Format: PDF The BER performance of presented quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes is not good as that of randomly constructed LDPC codes, while the lack of structure of randomly constructed LDPC codes implies serious disadvantages in terms of storing and accessing a large parity-check matrix. To solve the problems, this paper proposes a design of good quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, the obtained algebraically structured codes have large minimum distances and good BER performance. The proposed design is based on index matrices, which determines the shifts of the circulant matrices of the sparse parity-check matrices. Compared with the presented design of QC LDPC codes, the designed QC LDPC codes are free from girth 4, sometimes free from girth 6, and have much larger minimum distances. Based on the algebraic code structure, the conditions of the girth and minimum distance of the codes are found. The BER performance of the designed QC LDPC block codes compares with that of randomly constructed LDPC codes for any block lengths. Better BER performance is obtained by increasing the circulant size of the base QC code. Simulations verify the construction of the QC LDPC codes to be valid. Read moreEncoding of QC-LDPC Codes of Rank Deficient Parity Matrix
The encoding of long low density parity check (LDPC) codes presents a challenge compared to its decoding. The Quasi Cyclic (QC) LDPC codes offer the advantage for reducing the complexity for both encoding and decoding due to its QC structure. Most QC-LDPC codes have rank deficient parity matrix and this introduces extra complexity over the codes with full rank parity matrix. In this paper an encoding scheme of QC-LDPC codes is presented that is suitable for codes with full rank parity matrix and rank deficient parity matrx. The extra effort required by the codes with rank deficient parity matrix over the codes of full rank parity matrix is investigated.
